Message from Directors
It is our pleasure to share with you highlighted in- formation about the Integrated Innovation Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. The Institute is an unprecedented market-focused center designed to speed the pace of innovation in four areas: • producing professional masters’ graduates with the skills and know-how to accelerate new product and service creation; • conducting applied research that is valuable to industry; • providing executive education to industry; • and by consortium opportunities. It is the first such initiative to cross-train students and industry participants in the values, principles, thinking and methods of engineering, design and business – the three disciplines considered the core of innovation. Our model directly tackles the global need to “innovate or die” and has no limita- tions to how integrated innovation can be applied whether for industry or to resolve pressing societal issues.
We at Carnegie Mellon University and the Integrated Innovation Institute have demonstrated over many decades that Innovation can be studied, formalized and taught – and continuously improved upon with new knowledge. Global business challenges demand a new breed of executive talent. The Institute’s tenets force students outside their previous training and com- fort zones, creating hybrid thinkers and doers. Our graduates re-enter the workforce a market-level above others, with the agility to step into any range of scenarios in industry and immediately apply their knowledge. The Integrated Innovation Institute comes amid much global debate on the need to “fix” innovation. A recent study by Accenture found two dominant obstacles: a conservative approach focusing on line-extension renovation rather than a broad portfolio of bold ideas; and a lack of systematic, enterprise-wide processes capable of timely commercialization of inventions into products or services at scale.

Collaboration is the working alongside others to share ideas and approaches. The majority of innovation programs or companies today just strive for collaboration in teams to enhance project outcomes and miss the greater opportunity.
Our approach is to cross train individuals to produce elite innovators and leaders generating higher value project outcomes. We achieve this by building integrated innovation thinking skills through negotiating and understanding the perspectives of different disciplines through hands-on work in challenging product and service areas. Our goal is to produce the future generation of team leaders who operate above collaboration through cross-discipline knowledge that is integrated and leveraged.

The Master of Integrated Innovation degree focuses on the creation of products, services and interactive experiences that define new product opportunities that exceed user value expectations. Formerly called the Master of Product Develop- ment, the name of the degree has changed with the launch of the Integrated Innovation Institute, to reflect the unique positioning of the institute. The program excels at providing engineers, designers, business students and those in related fields, the skills and knowledge to become elite innovators. Students graduate to become accomplished practitioners and leaders of the product development process.
The Master of Science in Software Management (MS SM) program presents students with a management perspective of the rapidly changing software industry. “Management� refers not only to managing people and projects, but also to the strategic management of issues that arise in a software business.
The Integrative Media Program will be the first Applied Sciences program to provide training in creative industries that integrate technology and the arts, focusing on research and education across technology, arts and design, sciences and humanities as well as applications in film, gaming, social media, interactive computing, performance arts, visual arts, design and architecture. It also is the first Applied Sciences project to integrate rigor- ous academics seamlessly into a specialized com- mercial working environment, offering students the opportunity to work alongside professionals in the field.

Through a one-year intensive program (or two-year part-time program) focused on software innovation and entrepreneurship, this program emphasizes key skills in management, metrics, product definition, and strategy, giving students the entrepreneurial perspective that has been so successful in the rapidly changing software industry, specifically in the Silicon Valley.
