01 Engineering – Inspired Innovation
OUR PROMISE The School of Engineering believes in building better for the future. The more things change, the grander the challenges we face. We would be required to solve issues and improve systems that are related to energy, the environment and of course, society – which ultimately improves the living experience. We welcome a wide range of knowledge, experience and expertise, all housed under a single roof for our staff and students, with one mission - to make things better, by solving problems, without making a fuss. We aim at influencing and inspiring the world through our expertise and innovative talent, taking into consideration the demands of the industry for high-calibre graduates who are smart, skilled and highly-competent in their fields. As such, our spearheading initiatives which are Project-Based and Problem-Based Learning aim to engage our students in the designing, building and testing of products and devices, ensuring Innovation in engineering design. These initiatives ultimately leading to Outcome Based Education (OBE) which also aims at developing a ‘learning by doing’ pedagogy, where students are exposed to solving cases and problems adopted from the industry. Together with the support of our staff, our ultimate goal would be to enhance the overall student learning experience via student-centred learning and putting theory into practice.

“KDU provided me with the right environment to practice my skills. While I was in KDU, I was also the President of the Engineering Society which gave me a lot of exposure in organising events for engineering students. I also had the opportunity to work with a lot of other people from different schools, thus developing my social skills and this has prepared me well in the working world. At the work place, it is no longer about what you studied, but how you learn what you studied that makes all the difference. And I can say that KDU made all the difference for me.”
KDU is an ideal University which is able to provide it’s students a high standard learning environment. I had further pursued my Degree in KDU and am truly proud of the outcome - Not just because I did it by myself to reach the possible excellent outcome, but it is also by the help of the supporting team of encouraging lecturers. They helped me along the way and pushed my limits to the peak, striving for excellence. Here goes my five cents, “Succeed is not a necessary, attempts are.”
// Fatin Nur Husnain Binti Zakaria First Class Honours Graduate of 2010 Failure Analysis Engineer, Western Digital “Through my 4 years of studies here at KDU, I built up my confidence level and sharpened my leadership skills, and the environment here helped nurture me to be the person I am today. KDU has also given me the opportunity to represent the School of Engineering for the ENIGMA Competition, of which I obtained first place in the individual category. In KDU, we were always trained to be analytical and critical in our thinking, and I find that these traits are most essential in my present occupation. ”
However, learning does not just stop here for me. A further journey awaits as I will pursue my post graduate studies abroad. From there, I would get a greater exposure and learning towards my chosen field of studiesWireless communication.

OUTCOME BASED EDUCATION SoE KDU UC is committed to Outcome Based Education (OBE). To assist the teaching faculty in achieving its programme objectives, we adhere to the guidelines prescribed by the Engineering Accreditation Council, Malaysia in implementing OBE. The School is gearing itself up to ensure that our students are able to achieve certain milestones – a commitment we make up front by defining our degrees “Programme Objectives (PEOs)” summarized as follows.
We aim to have Graduate Engineers who can: • formulate, analyze and solve engineering problems through analytical and/or experimental means using varied techniques and computer-based solution tools, • articulate ideas and communicate in a clear and effective manner in both written and oral forms, • commit to the importance of life long learning, • become ethical, moral and socially responsible, and, • become techno-preneurs. Our course content reflects the above and our commitment in ensuring that a significant proportion of our graduates achieve these objectives is our promise.
ENGINEERING RESEARCH CENTRE The objective of the KDU UC Engineering Research Centre (ERC) is to develop, conduct, produce and excel in innovation in engineering technology and education research. Research activity within the ERC is focused into three key research areas: • Advanced Electronics and Computing’ led by Dr. Matthew Teow has been set up to spearhead research and innovation in electronic engineering and advanced computing. The groups expertise covers a wide area of research and innovation in electronics and advanced computing applications, including but not limited to microelectronics, medical electronics, biomechanics, signal and image processing, embedded systems and software engineering. • ‘Power and Energy’ led by Dr. Satesh Namasivayam, which aims to investigate into the areas of Electrical Power, Energy Efficiency and Conservation, Green Technology and Sustainable Construction, • ‘Engineering Education’ led by Dr. Satesh Namasivayam, which aims to examine the viability and the success of Project and Problem-based Learning in Engineering programmes.
The ERC provides a forum for discussion of research activities, sharing expertise and gaining international reputation through quality publication.
