01 Knowledge is Power
OUR PROMISE Veni. Vidi. Vici. I came. I saw. I conquered. This is my favourite quote taken from the quintessential “Julius Caesar” by William Shakespeare, and at KDU School of Law, our vision is to metamorphose students to come, see and conquer their dreams and goals. With core values of integrity, ethics and pastoral care at the epicenter of that vision, our impressive faculty line up of highly-qualified legalists and active practitioners all share a common objective of producing and shaping the future lawyers of our nation. What good is a law graduate who ventures into the world with all the knowledge that he/she can glean, but lack the skills that would make him/her stand out among his/her peers? Join us in your journey. Push your personal boundaries and grow in your advocacy skills and practical legal skills. Learn to think with the analytical mind of a philosopher. Hone precision with a fine-tooth comb. It’s a jungle out there in the legal profession and here, we prepare you for that arduous but rewarding profession. Meet our ever-dynamic Law Society and Invictus (our moot club), both of whom, together with the School of Law, plan exciting and industry-relevant activities for the year, all guaranteed to challenge the mind, refresh views and lift the heart! Parlay with a judge. Have a friendly spar with a member of the Bar. Challenge the views of your peers in moot competitions and debates. Take a walk on the wild side and have first-hand experience with our justice system by volunteering in our Justice Clinic. Be a socially-responsible individual by working on our charitable and human rights activities. Do you want to make a difference in society? Become extraordinary? Have fun while you’re at it? Then step into my parlour, into KDU’s School of Law. I am proud and honoured to welcome you on your journey to greatness.

The common route for law graduates is to undertake the Certificate of Legal Practice examinations in Malaysia or the English Bar examinations, and be on their way to becoming afull-fledged lawyer. However, there are a wide range of other careers that are open to the law graduates. The possibilities are endless. The graduate is armed with the most versatile university qualification available. A law degree is not just for those who want to practice law, as most employers value the communication, problem-solving and research skills that law graduates possess.

Many ask me why I chose KDU instead of the more traditional or popular colleges which offer the UOL programmes and all I can say is this: the syllabus can be memorized and understood. But to learn that law can be fun, and to know that those who are there to guide you actually love to teach and want us to personally be the best that we can? It is irreplaceable and I was lucky to find that in KDU.
Hannah Yeoh is a member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly in the Malaysian Parliament. She started her education with UTAS-KDU twinning (2+2) and graduated from UTAS with a Bachelor of Laws in 2001. Upon returning to Malaysia, Hannah practiced as a lawyer in Petaling Jaya. In 2007, she joined the Malaysia’s Democratic Action Party. In 2008, Hannah contested and won the Subang Jaya, Selangor state seat in the Malaysian general election.
Today I am practicing as a criminal lawyer. I have only gratitude and respect for my lecturers in KDU. I can only thank them for their guidance and their support throughout my “formative” years. And while I sit here writing this article, in my office, surrounded by piles of files and plenty of law books, sometimes overwhelmed but mostly honoured to be able to do the job that I have always dreamt of, I realise that KDU is indeed the college which has stuck true to its slogan “People Inspire People”.
05 Knowledge is Power
My father once said that he’d be proud to have his daughter as a lawyer, for the glamour that the job entails. He was joking, of course. I guess back then he had already seen the traits befitting a lawyer in me – rebellious and argumentative. The years of my studies in KDU and in UTAS were challenging and at the same time, enriching. As clichéd as it may sound, it’s true that there’s never an easy option in life but by bracing challenges with diligence and determination, the rewards will be fulfilling. With this, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to my dear lecturers in KDU and my learned professors in UTAS for helping me to take me where I am today. Awards received: 1) Lifetime membership with the Golden Key International Honour Society, UTAS 2) Tasmania International Scholarship, UTAS 3) Special Recognition Award, SHELL Malaysia
Regardless of academia or life in general, KDU believes that people should learn more from people and not just from books. Here at KDU, the lessons are learnt but the people are celebrated for the inspiration they bring to each other.

Graduate of 2007, Oxford Brookes University Legal Assistant at a law firm in Kuala Lumpur.
Weng Yew Wong started his journey of law here at KDU University College pursuing the distinguish degree under the University of Tasmania LLB twinning degree programme. In 2005, he graduated with an honours in UTAS and in 2007, he was admitted as advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya. He is now a practicing lawyer in Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill. He is currently in the firm’s dispute resolution practice group which focuses on areas of banking litigation involving company’s insolvencies, enforcement of debt instruments, land law and recovery of banking facilities.
Excellent teaching and guidance from the tutors and lecturers at KDU and also Oxford Brookes University provided a strong foundation for me to build my career. Both offered support and assistance to ensure that our university life is an enjoyable and memorable one. Awards received: 1) Principal’s Scholarship (2003), KDU Unversity College 2) Book Prize Award (2004), KDU University College
The knowledge, exposure and various skills I obtained whilst studying in KDU enabled me to understand and appreciate law as a subject. I am very grateful for the way KDU had specifically catered for Law students, from its caring, dedicated and highly qualified lecturers and tutors to the studying environment which included an excellent law library. Also, studying in KDU was not just a journey in academia. I caught a glimpse of what the practice of law was like through its court room where we were encouraged to participate in mooting competitions and where mock court room dramas were conducted so that we could get a taste of the practice of law. All this provided an excellent background, introduction and foundation to the legal world.
