Trustee Profiles Tina Chambers, Chair Trustee since 2012 Tina Chambers has a BSc (hons) in Specialist Nursing Practice (Tissue Viability) and became a Trustee in 2012. Tina has been a member of the Tissue Viability Society for 20 years and was co-opted to the Council of Trustees in April 2011 in order to act as co-chair on the Pressure Ulcer reporting consensus working group. She has been a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Tissue Viability for 15 years and during this time she has worked in both primary and secondary care. her current role is within an acute hospital trust. She has a keen interest in sharing and developing best practice in order to improve patient safety. Tina believes in keeping things simple and practical. She has sought to find answers as to the who and the why decisions are made and this has led to an interest in the politics of wound care. She has worked with commissioner groups, strategic health authorities and the Department of Health in order to raise awareness of Tissue Viability and to improve communications between these organisations and Tissue Viability practitioners. Maureen Benbow Trustee since 2011 Maureen is a senior lecturer at the University of Chester teaching a range of courses including Tissue Viability to pre-registration, post-registration nurses and other healthcare professionals. Her clinical background is in trauma, orthopaedics and Tissue Viability and she has published widely on aspects of Tissue Viability including Evidence Based Wound Management, in 2005. Maureen’s special interests are in pressure ulcer prevention, wound assessment and management, law and ethics. She is keen to help develop post-registration nurses to reach their academic potential and so improve patient care. Maureen runs the TVS’s Regional Study Days. Trustee Profiles Ria Betteridge Trustee since 2014 Ria currently works as Consultant Nurse in Tissue Viability at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. Having completed a BSc in Tissue Viability, she is currently undertaking a Master’s Degree in Advanced Clinical Practice and Higher Professional Education. Her Tissue Viability experience spans the past 15 years and four different sectors (community, acute, industry and education). She is passionate about the relationship between nursing practice and patient experience. She believes the TVS is committed to its members and the care they provide for their patients. She offers current clinical experience as well as operational and strategic planning. She would like the opportunity to support the TVS in the coming years. Elizabeth McGinnis (nee Scanlon) Trustee since 2012 Elizabeth works as a Nurse Consultant in Tissue Viability at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. She has worked in Tissue Viability for 20 years with the first 10 years in the community services in Leeds. Her special interest is pressure ulcer prevention, particularly heel pressure ulcers. The healing of heel pressure ulcers was the subject of her PhD which she completed in 2011. She also works in Tissue Viability research and is a co-applicant or principle investigator of several large NIHR funded and other studies. She has published widely in all aspects of TV including pressure ulcer prevention and management, VAC therapy for pressure ulcers, wound infection prevention and management and Cochrane systematic reviews. Trustee Profiles Clare Morris Trustee since 2012 Clare is Clinical Support Manager at Activa Healthcare. Before working for Activa, Clare worked for nearly 20 years as a Tissue Viability Nurse both in the acute and community settings in North Wales. She has published widely on the subject including a book, chapters within books and over 100 journal publications. During her time as a Tissue Viability Nurse, Clare had a particular interest in pressure ulcer risk assessment scores and developed the Medley score which, more recently, became the Maelor score. She also developed an award winning pressure ulcer documentation ‘performance Indicator’ audit tool with her colleague. Andrea Nelson Trustee since 2011 Andrea Nelson, PhD RGN, is Professor of Wound Healing and Head of School of Healthcare, University of Leeds. She leads research into the prevention and management of chronic wounds and, in collaboration with colleagues across the University, her department conducts primary research in the assessment of risk, prevention, diagnosis, management and experience of chronic wounds and their complications. Andrea is deputy chair of the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) External Devices and Physical Therapies Panel, a member of the HTA commissioning board, a Cochrane editor and author and on the editorial board of a number of nursing and Tissue Viabilty/wound care journals. Additionally she reviews for several clinical journals and funding bodies, and referees the grant proposals and final reports of national and International research funders. Trustee Profiles Jane Nixon Trustee since 2006 Professor Jane Nixon is Deputy Director of the Clinical Trials Research Unit, University of Leeds. The unit conducts large national and international clinical trials in cancer, stroke, cardiology, mental health and skin. Jane has developed a research career in the fields of pressure ulcer prevention and Tissue Viability. She has worked on an international level for the past decade, including collaborative systematic reviews and publications, guideline development and pressure ulcer prevention research projects. In 2008 she led the successful collaborative ÂŁ2 million, five year NIHR Programme Grant application entitled Pressure Ulcer PRogranne of ReSEarch (PURPOSE). Jane has also worked on the EPUAP/NPUAP Risk Assessment and Skin Assessment prevention guidelines, is current Treasurer of the TVS and became an EPUAP Trustee in 2008. Linda Primmer Trustee since 2014 Linda Primmer is Tissue Viability Nurse Specialist for NHS Lothian Edinburgh, East & Midlothian Community Health Partnerships. Her nursing career, spanning 30 years, has been focused on Tissue Viability for the past 20 years and wound healing, burns and plastics nursing for the remainder of that time. Her experience has been gained within regional centres throughout the UK and Saudi Arabia. Whilst in Saudi she developed and implemented the role of Clinical Resource Nurse for Skin and Wound Care in a major trauma hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. During this time, she was a member of the TVS and attended the conference in Blackpool. On returning to the UK she became a Tissue Viability Lecturer Practitioner for East Anglia University and Kings Lynn/Wisbech Hospital NHS Trust. Since 2004 she has been Tissue Viability Nurse Specialist and sole service provider for the Community Health Partnerships of Edinburgh, East and Midlothian. Trustee Profiles Kumal Rajpaul Trustee since 2014 Kumal qualified as a RN in 2001 with a Diploma in Nursing Studies. He completed a BSc (Hons) in Professional Practice in 2008 and obtained an MSc in Skin Integrity, Skills and Treatment in 2011 from the University of Hertfordshire. He has worked in general, vascular and colorectal surgical wards and burns and plastics before taking up the post of Tissue Viability. He is a visiting tutor at Kings College, London, where he supports modules in Tissue Viability and leg ulcer management. He also supports teaching for pre-registration nursing and midwifery students. He is currently the chair of the Tissue Viability Nurse Forum South whereby he facilitates four meetings a year. He has consulted on a NICE Delphi Consensus document on pressure ulcer prevention in child health as well as the NICE guidelines for pressure ulcers in primary and secondary care. Ray Samuriwo Trustee since 2014 Dr Ray Samuriwo is a Lecturer in Adult Nursing at the School of Healthcare Sciences, Cardiff University. He is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Healthcare, University of Leeds. Prior to these appointments, he worked as a clinical academic in critical care and conducted original primary research into pressure ulcers. He teaches evidence based practice and research methods to students from a diverse range of professions at undergraduate, masters and doctoral level. He has an interest in supporting clinicians to improve the quality of care that they deliver to patients at the bedside or in the community, especially with regards to wound healing. He has an emerging national and international profile as a research academic. He has conducted primary research and systematic reviews into wound healing, decision making and quality improvement with colleagues from different professions. Trustee Profiles Heidi Sandoz (formerly Heidi Guy), Vice Chair Trustee since 2011 Heidi is Lead Nurse for Wound Care at Accelerate CIC. Previous to this, she was Tissue Viability Clinical Nurse Specialist at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and, since July 2010, has been an Honorary Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire. Her passion for Tissue Viability began in 1987 when she first became interested in pressure ulcers. She has been a member of the Tissue Viability Society since 1988. Heidi has a particular interest in pressure ulcers and topical negative pressure therapy and has published several articles in nursing journals. Fran Spratt Trustee since 2014 Having been nursing for 20 years, working within the specialty for seven and obtaining an MSC in Tissue Viability, Fran now leads a small, dynamic team within a large acute hospital. Her primary focus is to ensure that any patient with a wound has both the best possible management but also experience, which in a hospital setting can be a challenge. Being relatively new to Tissue Viability, she has found the TVS an invaluable source of information and support and wants to give something back and help continue this excellent work providing an accessible forum to share good practice. She has an appreciation of current issues and a passion to improve the profile of the specialty and the overall management of wounds to ultimately improve the quality of care provided to patients. Trustee Profiles Nikki Stubbs Trustee since 2013 Nikki Stubbs qualified as a registered general nurse in 1986 in Leeds. In 1991 she became a District Nursing Sister following completion of the District Nursing Certificate. It was during this time that she developed an interest in wound care and became a Tissue Viability Nurse in 2000. In 2003, Nikki became the clinical team leader for the Tissue Viability Service and has been actively developing the research portfolio within the service since completing her MSc in Evidence based Practice at York University. Nikki is the chair of the regional Tissue Viability group for Yorkshire and Humber. The service has recently received national recognition by being short listed for an HSJ Efficiency award. Julie Sturges Trustee since 2014 Julie currently works as the Lead Tissue Viability Nurse at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, which is an integrated trust. She has spent most of her nursing career working in the field of burns and plastic surgery and moved into Tissue Viability nine years ago. Having completed her BSc in Tissue Viability she is currently undertaking the NHS Post Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership. Julie has a special interest in the prevention of pressure ulcers and has worked on this with both the No Needless Skin Breakdown Group and with NHS England. Trustee Profiles Gill Sykes Trustee since 2009 Gill has 25 years of experience as a specialist podiatrist, working to develop close links with the multidisciplinary team, Ion Wound Management. Her main role is with vascular and critically high-risk patients, taking part in joint clinics where she works alongside a vascular consultant with a particular interest in Tissue Viability, an orthotist and an amputee team. Gill also undertakes the measurement and fitting of prescription orthopaedic footwear in order to address the long-term prevention of re-ulceration. Much of her work is in co-ordinating care for patients with foot wounds, working closely with district nursing teams in order to provide a seamless journey for the patient between secondary and primary care.
