Panel and Fold
Elevation
In this subject I will be working with the material system of Panel and Fold. This system was explored using an artichoke.
Section
Changes in Geometry of Leaves
92mm
Plan
84mm In order to measure an artichoke a combination of photography, computer scaling and ruler was used. The material system of panel and fold in this object is evident in a pattern of overlapping leaves, similar in shapes, but various in sizes in order to enclose the middle of the plant. The split in the middle of leaves allows them to stay on the stem when new leaves are growing from the inside. The pattern of growth is repeating throughout the object's structure. Almost ideally symmetrical placement of leaves of an artichoke makes it an outstanding example of naturally occurring panel and fold material system.
