Week Three: Construction Workshop

Our group design incorporated the strength of all the materials provided( such as new zealand timber, australian timber, plasterboard nail and joist hangar nails. We combined them all into one structure by firstly creating two of the same pieces of australian timber nailed together with new zealand timber by using a mixture of nails available. Then we nailed two pieces together to give the structure even more strength. Outcone was expected. Our design didn’t break. Althouht the noises of breaking wood could be heard it wasn’t visible on the surface. Span_is the extent or measure of space between two points or extremities, as of a bridge or roof; the breadth. Cross Section_is a section formed by a plane cutting through an object, usually at right angles to an axis. Strength_is the quality or state of being strong. Compression_ is a force applied to the outside of an object that pushes inward or toward the object’s center. Tension_is a pulling or stretching force. Flexion_is the condition of being flexed or bent. Shear_is an applied force or system of forces that tends to produce a shearing strain. Also called shearing stress, shear stress. Deflection_is the act of deflecting or the state of being deflected Buckling_ is characterized by a sudden failure of a structural member subjected to high compressive stress, where the actual compressive stress at the point of failure is less than the ultimate compressive stresses that the material is capable of withstanding.
