Hello, dear students and teachers! Look, you have got a new textbook, Key to English, in front of you. At first sight it doesn’t look very different from other English textbooks used in most Lithuanian schools. However, it is different because it is written by Lithuanian authors who are teachers of English. What is more, we have put much of our experience and knowledge to help you achieve good standards of English. We also looked into your new ŠOK series textbooks and tried to integrate them by using your knowledge of other subjects. We hope that Key to English will make your learning easy and interesting. Enjoy teaching and learning English! What can be more beautiful? Only our native language. It is worth learning English so that you can tell the rest of the world about it. Besides, English will help you to find new friends in the world, read books and magazines, write letters, find new information, travel and meet interesting people. Authors

Gediminas was the Grand Duke of Lithuania about seven hundred years ago. He lived in his castle in Trakai. The castle was on the island in the middle of a big lake. Trakai was the capital of Lithuania then. There were huge forests full of wild animals and birds around Trakai. One day Gediminas hunted in the forest. He saw a very big aurochs and followed it. They crossed the green hills and blue rivers. Gediminas’ horse was fast, the aurochs was faster but Gediminas’ spear was the fastest. The aurochs fell down under a huge green oak. Evening was near and it was too late to go back to Trakai. Gediminas decided to camp in the forest near a big hill. At midnight he had a strange dream. An iron wolf was standing on the hill. He was howling so loud that the people around the country could hear its howling. Gediminas went to see the wise man Lizdeika and told him about his strange dream. Lizdeika said, “Oh, Grand Duke Gediminas, you have to build a castle on the hill. It will be strong and famous.” So Gediminas built a castle where the iron wolf was standing. The castle was the strongest and the most famous in the country. People built a city around the castle. Gediminas made this city the capital of Lithuania and called it Vilnius.
