Introduction .

KEY TO ENGLISH

Dear students and teachers, Nice to meet you again! This autumn another Key to English has arrived at your school. You already know that this textbook is written by a group of Lithuanian authors who are teachers of English. What is more, it belongs to ŠOK series of textbooks, that uses relations between all the textbooks in the same form. We hope that Key to English 6 will help you to learn the English language and make your learning easy, interesting and enjoyable. But don’t forget that you can learn English outside your classroom. Reading books and watching films in English, writing letters to your penfriends, chatting with teenagers from all over the world, listening to music and travelling abroad can make you a successful language learner. We wish you luck in using and developing the knowledge you have got in the English lessons.

It tells you what you are going to learn this lesson.

88

Why did the knights have a competition? Why could nobody pull the sword from the stone? Why did Arthur have to go back home? How did Arthur become the King of England? What was Arthur like when he was the King?

Long long ago there was a great stone with a sword in it. The stone stood near the greatest cathedral of London. There were words on the sword “Who pulls out the sword is the King of England”. All the knights wanted to become the King of England. They travelled to London and had a competition. The winner tried to pull the sword but nobody could move it. One day Sir Ector with his two sons Kay and Arthur went to the competition in London. When they arrived Kay noticed that he had forgotten his sword. Sir Ector asked Arthur to go back home and bring Kay’s sword. Arthur wasn’t very happy but he had to listen to his father. On his way home he saw a sword in the stone. “I can borrow this sword for my brother,” thought Arthur and pulled it out. Sir Ector was very surprised to see Arthur back so soon. When he saw the sword he was even more surprised, “Where did you get this sword, Arthur?” “I can show you,” answered Arthur. Sir Ector and Kay followed him. “The sword was in this stone,” and with these words Arthur put the sword back into the stone. “Kay, try to pull out the sword,” said Sir Ector. Kay took the sword with two hands and tried as hard as he could, but the sword didn’t move. “I can’t, father,” said Kay. “Now you, Arthur.” Arthur took the sword with one hand and pulled it out easily. Sir Ector knelt in front of Arthur and said, “Arthur, you are not my son. You are King Pendragon’s son and now you are the King of England.” King Arthur was the great King of England. He was an honest and brave king and people respected and loved him. There are a lot of legends about King Arthur, his magic sword and the adventures of his friends – the Knights of the Round Table.

A complete set of cards is called a deck. The deck has got four suits: spades , hearts , diamonds , and clubs . They originated in France in 1480.

The king of Hearts Called for the tarts, And beat the Knave full sore; The Knave of Hearts Brought back the tarts, And vowed he’d steal no more. Study the rule. Then practise reading the sentences.

Sentence stress is the music of spoken English. The important words that carry the meaning are always stressed. Other words are not very important and they are not stressed.

So, merry Christmas, uncle.” “Good afternoon!” said Scrooge. “And a happy New Year!” “Good afternoon!” said Scrooge. It was Christmas Eve, the twenty-fourth of December, the evening before Christmas Day. Old Scrooge was busy in his office. It was very cold. The door of Scrooge’s office was open so he could watch his clerk. The clerk worked in a tiny cold room. Scrooge had a small fire but the clerk’s fire was even smaller. He could not add coal because Scrooge kept it in his room. “Merry Christmas, uncle!” cried a happy voice. It was the voice of Scrooge’s nephew Fred. “Bah!” said Scrooge. “Humbug!” “Do you say that Christmas is a humbug, uncle? You don’t mean that, do you?” “Yes, I do! Merry Christmas! Bah! You are too poor to be merry!” “Oh,” said nephew, “I am poor but you are rich. So why aren’t you merry?” Scrooge didn’t have a better answer than, “Humbug!” “Don’t be angry!” said Fred. “I can only feel angry when I live in the world of fools. What is Christmas time for you? It’s only spending more money than you have! Every Christmas you become a year older but not richer! I think,” said Scrooge angrily, “that everyone who goes about saying ‘Merry Christmas!’ is a fool!” “Uncle!” said the nephew. “Nephew!” said the uncle. “Celebrate your Christmas in the way you like and I will celebrate it the way I like!”
