TREND OVERVIEWS Engineering Robot

Gorillaz Hologram

Second Life addict and virtual companion

Original 3D Camera

Robotics are slowly creeping into our lives more and more without us really realising.

Holograms offers a 3D experience that gives an illusion of an image. The hologram can now be commercialized to the point of it being used in everyday life. Having been round since the 1960’s the idea of holograms are not new, however 3D holograms are starting to appear in mainstream catwalk shows and shopping experiences.

Second life is the new addiction that is targeted at middle aged people.

Over the past couple of years 3D films have become extremely successful, however the inconvience of glasses having to be worn when viewing these motion films has been a set back.

The idea have robot’s has been around since the 1960’s in the first series of Dr.Who with the Cyber men. However last year HRP-4C was brought out, and walked down the catwalk at Tokyo’s fashion week. The design of the robot has hardly altered. However last year HRP-4C was brought out, and walked down the catwalk at Tokyo’s fashion week. The design of the robot has hardly altered. 6

Its a reality based simulation game that has many people hooked. This game is an escape from normality of real life. This online experience is aimed towards middle aged people that are possibly in a midlife crisis. Do we shy away from real life expeditions in favour of being in a virtual land?

The various types of 3D glasses offer different, however not perfected effects. 2013 have predicted that these glasses will be no more.

Botics Overview Robotics has become a prominent part of the technology industry with constant developments it looks to dominate the future trends. The HRP-4C, a singing and dancing robotic from Japan, is a possible entertainment feature for the 2012 London Olympics, making it an international phenomenon. This will develop more so into 2013, leading to technology awareness.

Technology is a constant in every day life, from the alarm clock in the morning, to switching the television on when you get home. With progressive development to ease human activity robots are being introduced into our lives. HRP 4C, a prototype robot originally made for entertainment purposes has learnt to sing, dance and when swung at, can prevent an attack on herself. Although exclusively in Japan, her worldwide presence is known and by 2013 we predict she will come as far as London, with developments making her more human-like. Films reference the idealistic uses of robot forms, in the beginning of i-robot they are used for chores, a slave to the human race. Surrogates demonstrate how these high-tech robots are remotely controlled to live out a person’s fantasy life.

‘One machine can do the work of FIFTY ordinary men.’ ~Elbert Hubbard

However not all films highlight the usefulness of these mechanical creatures; in Terminator artificially intelligent machines seek to exterminate what is left of the human race. In transformers a war between autobots puts the human race at risk. The prototype robots in films have a great influence on the development of these machines in real life. Botics are also used in advertising campaigns to help promote the innovative technology of the company. Citron, Currys, Skoda, Hitachi, Honda, and Sony are just a few recent examples.

‘Fear is like a hologram. It seems real, filled with substance. And then, when you go beyond it, you realize there is nothing there. It’s all an illusion.’

Holograms Overview Holograms were a dream from Star Trek, something we never thought would integrate into our daily lives. However it has already arrived, with CNN featuring a presenter live via hologram from Chicago, this could be the future of the news. Holograms now appearing out of i-phones and i-pads, maybe by 2013 we’ll be able to talk via hologram. This technology could be used in advertising, as part of billboards and on television to make a more interactive experience with the audience.

The first 2D hologram was created by Nobel Prize Winner Dennis Gabor in 1947, the concept of 3D has been around since the 60s showing in films such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Red Dwarf and Lost in Space. Bringing science fiction into the laboratory is what scientists from the university of Arizona have recently achieved. Most of us will remember the famous scene in Star Wars in which a hologram of Princess Leia appealed for help from Obi-wan Kenobi, it has taken over 30 years but the concept of a real time 3-D hologram has now become a reality. The illusion of an image has also been used on stage by the band Gorillaz, as well as on the catwalk by Diesel and Alexander McQueen, today it is so commercialised to the point of being used in everyday life, with Cadbury using it in their flake advert, and apple using it for their flagship store.

Reality Life Overview Virtual reality is taking over. It is now a leader in online games, a virtual world to socialize and explore. Second Life, a hit with many adults has become an addiction to many, this makes it clear it shall continue into the future. People prefer to live in a virtual world, where they can modify their lives easily, unlike the real world. Games and graphics are being developed everyday, reality life is used as an advertising tool providing more experiences for users, by 2013 people could live the perfect virtual life.

‘Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents.’ quoted by Second Life

Virtual reality has become a huge factor in people’s lives, simulating an environment that is both imaginary and real. Most current reality environments are visual experiences displayed either through a TV screen or a stereoscopic display. Virtual reality started off as an MIT creation, with inventions such as the Aspen Movie Map in 1977. The use of such technology in military situations goes towards the survival training with scenario simulations. The concept of virtual reality was popularized in mass media by films such as Brainstorm and The Lawnmower Man. Since then the 1997 film, The Matrix has become the definition of Virtual reality, the perception of reality is actually a simulation. Games are now the leaders of virtual reality technology in daily life. With many people members of Second Life, a 3D virtual world where users can socialize, connect and explore.

24

Second Life is used as an advertising tool, with companies joining and then building a store or brand experience. American Apparel created a virtual store, where users can dress their avatars in the brand. Peugeot have made an Island where members can view and drive new models.

Speckies No More Overview 3D technology is part of science, medical, film and gaming industries, which has made it a household name. Televisions and cameras have developed to take on 3D works, many people owning the new electronics. 3D is about the experience, an experience that has dominated the box office and gaming world, something that will definitely continue into the future. People are fascinated with the idea that images can jump out at you, with developments in 3D technology this is sure to be a huge feature in advertising in the near future, using 3D imagery to draw the viewers in.

3D technology is used in a variety of industries, medical, motion picture, science and video game. This technology gives the chance to see various real-world entities such as people and cars. The use of it in science and medicine offer 3D models of the human anatomy for enhanced visualization, helping develop medical research and knowledge. The 3D film industry can be traced back as far as 1915 and has gone on to dominate the current motion picture scene with a variety of films, from children’s to horror to action. Alice in Wonderland, Saw and Jackass are a few of the popular 3D motion pictures. After the development of 3D, there are now many 3D computer games available, Call of Duty: Black Ops, World of War craft and Assassins Creed. Many 3D films have been adapted into 3D computer games. Avatar and Resident Evil are two examples. With Films and games turning 3D, the technology to play it on has been converted to accommodate. The Electronics companies have launched 3D HD Televisions and digital cameras, which are becoming the must have in new technology. Everything has gone 3D.

As you see 3D today, you overcome this objection from the 3D you say back in the seventies and eighties. That’s why today’s fundamentally different that before. Mr. Wertheimer CO of entertainment of technology center

Conclusion 32

Botics, Holoverse, Realistic crisis and Speckies no more, will all have a strong bearing on the advertising and marketing industries in the following years, but could also infiltrate the Fashion,Music and Art businesses. A possible scenario would be fashion shows featuring no human models, using robotics like the Japanese HRP-4C robot that featured in a runway show. Models used via Holograms, so presence would not be needed on the day. 3D could be incorporated, by creating a new experience for fashion shows with the audience watching through designer 3D speckies. The same ideas would work for the music industry, using hologram versions of the musicians and 3D videos to make the music come to life for the audience. The Gorillaz have already made a mark with using virtual reality characters of them, this can only progress through to other artists. All of the mentioned trends could be used in art, creating memorable and living pieces of artwork; this could be the new definition of ‘modern art’. Holoverse as a trend has the potential to be used not just as a marketing tool but also as a business tool. In the hectic world of business and finance many people can’t afford to take time out to attend meetings, so have speakerphone conference calls. Holograms could change this; representatives appearing in offices via hologram could create a more personal meeting and re-establish conference calls. To finish off, technology has become a huge part of our everyday lives, new inventions that we thought could only exist in Star Wars have become available in stores. The future is clear; technology is the way forward for many businesses, making everything a unique experience so nothing can be forgotten.

FUTURE RECOMMENDATIONS

34

Holoverse Digital media and the way we perceive people on the television is something that is set to change. With new advances in 3D technology, and the launch of 3D televisions, cameras and camcorders, viewing media in 2D is a thing of the past.

Botics In the next decade robotics will take over our lives. In an amazing way. Robots are already in our households and lifestyles, robotic vacuum cleaners and self hair washing basins. In the near future that is all set to maximise. Robot’s in the household will become domesticated, you will be able to set robotic options to most electronic appliances. On things like coffee makers with timers and washing machine settings. The average household will become allot more sophisticated. Robotic’s in entertainment. HRP-4C will be one of many in the next decade. A whole ballet made of robots? Robotic Olympics? The possibilities really are endless with the rate that technology is advancing. Robotic’s in industry. Making people’s lives easier with taking on your workload. Robot’s don’t need rest. Will it be that the army takes charge and has robot’s fighting for our country’s rather than humans. Robotic power would be stronger, more agile and if hit know one would get hurt. Films have already predicted this such as Gamer and Avatar.

With holograms and the three dimensional life- like effect that they give becoming more and more advanced we will see live interviews in which the interviewer ‘looks’ to be sitting opposite the interviewee when in actual fact they are the other side of the world. News correspondents reporting from exotic places will look as though they are in the studio- a simple example of this was used by CNN during the Barack Obama elections, with reporter Jessica Yellin’s hologram in the studio- the process was filmed hours before and was considerably lifelike however details were not precise and a blue outline shows the technology was not yet perfected. Cinematic experiences will leave you feeling as though you are involved in the film a similar experience to being at the theatre with characters moving through the gangway. Advertising campaigns will pop out at you as you walk down the street and resemble their true form. The experience that a true to life hologram will give will be so unbelievably representative of its true form we shall not know the difference between an actual object and a hologram. Scary.

RECOMMENDATIONS 2

FUTURE

Speckies No More

Realistic Crisis Virtual reality life has already invaded, so it seems prudent that in the future it shall continue to do so. People are attracted to this lifestyle because of the feeling of escapism and it has been proven as a form of therapy for anxiety and stress.

Since the beginning of 2009 3D has changed our cinema experience, with movies such as Avatar, Toy Story and Alice In Wonderland featuring in 3D. The publicity from these films has created such a buzz, that it is clear 3D will continue into the future as a popular trend. Skype has millions of users around the world, its use is to connect people, with 3D imagery viewing friends and family would be a more exciting experience. It could be used in all day-to-day actions, such as telephone calls and emails.

A possibility for the future could involve a variety of other modern technologies, such as holograms and 3D, as the current reality life graphics are still average, developing this would be the next step forward. The characters could look more realistic, but still have the application of creating a new and modified you.

The Harry Potter films feature moving imagery in newspapers, taking this idea the future of the media could involve 3D images integrated into newspapers. 3D will be used in advertising to really expand past traditions campaigns; companies would have a more innovative effect through the interactive media such as magazines, newspapers and billboards.

We already have images materializing via holograms so the next step would be for our virtual friends to come to life. Companies are already using Second Life as an advertising tool, so next we could converse with company representatives. As virtual life is such a popular trend it seems that if the characters could appear via hologram, touch sensitive technology is being developed currently, people could really interact with their virtual reality companions. Is this the next step to online dating?

There is also the possibility that music videos may be the next target for 3D usage, creating a new approach to visually exploring music, and taking the often-generic music video to a new level. Furthermore, it is possible that improving 3D technology could change the fashion industry, with adapted 3D material; Fashion week could be in 3D. Consequently, in the future we wont need glasses to view 3D, it will be part of our daily lives.
