Education for a better world School Director Message

The SVP Pledge

It has been almost seven weeks now since the school year 20112012 commenced. It feels great to write again for the SVP newsletter.

I pledge to be a CHAMPION Treating ourselves, each other and the environment with respect. I will be Courageous, Honest, Active, Moral, Positive, Innovative, Optimistic and Noble. Ibu Yustina Ries

As we open this year, let me inform everyone in the community again that Ibu Evelyn Siburian has moved to Jakarta to search for more challenges in her career. We are always in gratitude to her for all her contributions, efforts and everything that she has done for the SMP Victory Plus. We all wish her the best in all her future undertakings. As we all know, Ibu M.M. Isti Handayani is now our new Middle School Principal.

Ibu Esti Mangesti P.

Ibu Evelyn Siburian

This year, we will still be focusing on our theme, “Build Your Character, Build Your Future.” We realize that shaping a good character is a process that needs to be done with the collaboration of the community around you. This means that the involvement of the parents, staff, teachers and students themselves is very essential to the process. This will assure us that the virtues we teach our students are implemented and reinforced in their daily lives especially when they are at home or outside the SVP compound.

Ibu Isti Handayani

This school year we have also assigned Ibu Sri Mangesti Pangastuti to be our Head of Service whose main responsibility is to supervise all the leaders of Service Departments and their team, i.e. The Administration, Admission, Finance, Marketing, GA and HR, Library and the Clinic. This is aim to improve our services and assist you effectively.

It is always a struggle in any institutions, companies or other organizations to adapt to new habits or routines. This is now the challenge we are posing to the SVP community and we are inspired by the quotes from Plato, “The first and the best victory is to conquer self.” With this as our guiding principle I am very positive when we introduce this new routine in the classroom this year. Everyone will recite the SVP Pledge by heart everyday, as we believe in the power of words and that anything that is done repeatedly become part of our system and soon become us. We are in good hopes that by this new routine we will become people with good deeds who possess the character of a real CHAMPION.

An International Standard School

In addition to our theme, we have introduced a new routine entitled Morning Character Building (MCB) Headed by yours truly, Mr. Adam Huntly and Ibu Rosa Furey. We are also involving all parents who are willing to participate in this program. This is the rationale behind the shorten period every Monday, to give way to a 35-minute session for Middle School, High School and Primary Students. The program consists of sharing stories of successful people where we all can learn, related video clips and singing together to create a positive atmosphere. The activity varies according to the character traits that we need to discuss and emphasize to our students. So far we have covered 3 MCB and it started with RESPECT. We first defined Respect as showing high regard for self, others, property and environment. During the first session, we taught them how to respect themselves by doing positive things to ourselves including to see, to say and to hear no evil. It means that we have the control to always get positive exposure. Here, we learnt how to do a self-positive affirmation (positive self talk) as from the research done by Sandy Mc. Gregor he mentioned: - Negative self talk influences us negatively - Scientists have proven that we talk to ourselves 65.000 times a day. We encourage all of you to always choose positive words whatever happens, wherever the place is and whenever the time is. So Listen to your self talk & be aware of that.

On the 2nd MCB we learnt the Golden Rule of Respect: Treating others the way you would want to be treated. Show respect for others even when they are different from you. Our discussion in the 3rd MCB was the Power of Words. We discussed that words can give hope to people or to kill people, words can also change the emotion from sad into happy feeling. It can also be the reason for love or hatred. So change your words and you will change your world. In order to make sure that during the holiday you can also encourage your children to always demonstrate RESPECT. Below is the list of things that you can encourage your children to do: RESPECT LOOKS LIKE: - A Smiling Face - A Nodding Head - Taking Turns - Queue Up - Waiting Patiently - Not interrupting - Paying Attention - Listening attentively - Showing Courtesy - Putting away things you use. - Holding the door open for someone

All SVP Management, Teachers and Staff Wish you a very Happy Eid al Fitr.

‘Eid is a Thanksgiving Day 'Eid is a day of remembrance 'Eid is a Day of victory 'Eid is a Harvest Day 'Eid is a Day of forgiveness 'Eid is a Day of peace May you have a Joyous and Blessed Eid al-Fitr day with all your dear ones, including people of all faiths and humanity, filled with Love, Peace, and Happiness .... Ameen Congratulations to Pak I. Aditya Yoga W. (SVP Accounting Staff & Budget Controller) who got married last 16th July 2011 to Bu Diah Merinda C.S. We wish them all the best in their new life.

Primary PREFECTS!

W

ow...and Double Wow! I am so amazed with the grade 4 and 5 students. This is the 1st time for them to be Primary PREFECTS. Yes, starting this academic year Primary school has assigned some students as the Primary PREFECT to help teachers enforce discipline throughout the school. They really put their hearts and efforts in doing their parts as the Primary PREFECTS; they carried out their duties so well! It is not easy because Primary PREFECTS task is making sure that the students follow the school rules. Not only that they are dedicated, but they are also proactive! Some of them put their names as the 'Flag Raising Prefects' at HariKemerdekaan flag raising ceremony; they wereShafa, Marwah, Lintang, Jojo, Feifei, Santa, Marco, Stefanny. They consistently supervised the students (grade 1-4) before and until the flag raising ceremony finished. They have set good examples to their friends and been good partners for the teachers too. Keep up the Great work to all Primary PREFECTS! Prefect in education is student assisting with discipline: a student who is given some authority over other pupils in matters of discipline in a private school (microsoft® encarta® 2009. © 1993-2008 microsoft corporation) -Esterlita-

Independence Flag Raising and Competition Day 2011

C

elebration of “INDEPENDENCE DAY can be a wonderful opportunity for all Indonesian people to learn about values of independence and respect Indonesian heroes that give their lives to the independence of Indonesia. As part of our appreciation of this historical event, SVP held a flag raising ceremony and competition that took place atAmartaHall on the 2ndfloor. All students from primary to high school, staff, teachers, and principals also took part in this event. The flag raising started at 08.00 a.m. Everybody in AmartaHall was waiting for the main event, when the team of PASKIBRA (Gr.10) started to walk, all with their movement, especially when they started to hoist the flag up to the top of the pole. At the same time Gr. 11-12 students sang the national anthem of Indonesia Raya. After the flag raising ceremony students had their competition from 09.00 a.m to 01.00 p.m. Almost every student was involved in cleaning up and decoratingtheir classrooms, speech contest, and yell-yell competition. At the end of the competition, the committee announced the winnersof the 3 competitions. The students thenwent back to the class to continue their lessons as soon as the ceremony had finished. What is New in Middle School

E

ntering the new academic year 2011-2012, the Middle School has some new things that we have been implementing and plan to do:

1. Discipline Matters We are now executing our new procedures of tardiness and as a result students are getting more punctual. 2. Extra Curricular Activities The extra curricular activities have started. Apart from what we have had like soccer and basketball, we some new extra curricular activities, such as: cooking, fashion design, photography, woodcraft, web design, boy/girl scout, and badminton. This way we hope that we can maximize students' potentials and life skills. 3. Gr. 7 Leadership Camp The leadership camp for grade 7 students will be held on 21-23 September 2011. We really hope that parents will support this program and encourage their children to join the program as this will play an important role in building their character. 4. Gr. 8 & 9 Home-Stay Programme A home-stay programis designed for Gr. 8-9 students. The program is scheduled abroad as we want the students to broaden their international mindedness perspectives. 5. Community Service After having it done for several years, we are planning to implement new procedures of community service. This new procedures is aimed athaving better arrangement among the students and getting better impact on the society. A structured teacher professional development is consistently held as we all believe that the quality of a teacher will have significant impact on students' achievements. We are looking forward to parents' support and involvement to work collaboratively with teachers for a better learning condition of all students. MM. Isti Handayani (Middle School Principal)

IGCSE EXAMINATION RESULTS The first IGCSE examination at Sekolah Victory Plus has been conducted successfully and the results have been announced. From 41 entries that the school has made, 20 of them achieved B or above. This is a huge achievement especially for first timer like our school. Adding to that excitement, one of our students from Grade 11 Science, namely Nadia WahikaPutri can get all As from the 3 examinations that she joined in. 2 of them even scored A* which is the highest achievement one can possibly get for the IGCSE examination. For this achievement, school has handed the registration refund as a form of appreciation to those who get B and above. Although, we believe that it is not only money in which our students aimed for. Beyond than that, the result marks their achievement toward international standard. We do hope that the next examination which will be held in this October-November, our students can achieve even higher results. This can only be achieved by a hardwork both from students and teachers and a support from Parents with their prayer and loving care for their children. Hendriadi – High School Principal

HIGH SCHOOL ACCREDITATION At the end of 2010/2011 academic year, Sekolah Victory Plus, the high school had been awarded as A Model School by the Municipal Ministry of National Education Department. This status is awarded after assessing the school facilities, teachers' competences, curriculum and the school management. For this status, Victory Plus High School is entitled to register for an early accreditation from the National Education Department. Normally, accreditation can only be done after a school has its first batch of graduates. The accreditation process will be conducted on the 14 and 15 September 2011. We do hope that the High School can follow the Primary and Middle School gaining the highest status for this process. Both Primary and Middle School were accredited 'A' by the Minister of National Education Department. With accredited status, the Victory Plus High School students are eligible for applying to the national universities both through the regular written selection and invitation scheme starting from this academic year. We do hope that this process can run smoothly and therefore our effort in providing the best education for our students can be realized into a more advance level. Hendriadi – High School Principal
