OUR LEARNING JOURNEY CELEBRATION
P
eople have different way to celebrate particular events'. Celebration may refer to a party or festival. As part of social development, the students learn about themselves, families and community. They learn about 'different' festival, people celebrate particular events differently, as they are from different religion and cultures. Everything is created from moment to moment. The children explored those moments by experiencing the events. We had: 'Deepavali Celebration' lead by Ms Sunita. The children were introduced to how Indians celebrate their new year known as the festival of lights. They really enjoyed the moment especially when they had their first try to eat chapati (traditional Indian bread). 'Birthday celebration'. Birthday is just another way for us to celebrate who we are and where we came from. 'Wedding Celebration'. Every member of the class had a role to play in the big day which was took place in the cafeteria. We had the groom and bride, there was a flower girl and the couple's parents. The project was to educate the children in the practices and customs of a marriage celebration. 'Chinese New Year Celebration'. We had this event supported by our Parents Mrs Rita Setiawan (Jerico's mom from EY 1 seahorse class). The children experienced the real Chinese New Year celebration by visiting her house in Grand Wisata. Valentine's Day Celebration. The children shared their love and care by visiting classes at SVP and giving a surprise gift by singing 'I love you' song and leaving a 'love card' for them. Many more events will be explored to support and provide the children information and experiences about different celebration. (Written by Ms. Mamik - EY1 Year Leader)
How We Organize Ourselves EY 2 students are learning about 'How We Organize Ourselves'. In this unit we see and experience various occupations from many kinds of resources. We invite parents and professionals to share their stories about their jobs with us. We learn a lot about how people work and what tools or materials they need to work. In fact, we also find out new professions we did not know before. It is a really fun and precious experience for us. Thank you to Mr. Handoko, Mr. Julius (Theo's father), Mrs. Evi (Nael's mother), and Mrs. Siti Nurlela (Akiko's mother) for sharing your knowledge with us! (Ms. Dian - EY2 Year Leader)
How The World Works Grade 5 had learnt about HOW THE WORLD WORKS. It is about how humans use their understanding of scientific principles and the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment. We did some research, built circuits and went for an excursion to gain more knowledge. 1st February 2011 we visited Museum Electricity and IPTEK in TMII. We learnt and explored how electricity is being produced and how generator helps in producing electricity. Students saw and touched the sample of generator and they played on many electricity games. Students watched movie of the process of distributing electricity to our homes and how to use electricity wisely. We came back to school with a lot of new information that help us in becoming more knowledgeable person. Thank you for SVP, the teachers and all the parents for all the supports in making this activity ran smoothly. (Ms. Wiwin - Gr. 5 Year Leader)
Yayasan Penabur Visit On January 9th 2011, our school received a visit from Yayasan Penabur, Jakarta. There were 16 people altogether, consisting of principals, teachers, a coordinator. The purpose of their visit was to conduct a comparative study, to learn about a school's curriculum in general, and how to apply international-mindedness in an international standardized school such as Victory Plus. The visitors were enthusiastic and eager to learn from us. They conducted an interview with Ms Dewi and Ms Yustina, and took a school tour. Our school provided them as a good example of where students are given exposure to different cultures, traditions and values. The visitors were impressed by our students' hospitality and fluency in English. Also, they were truly inspired to learn and implement their evaluations into their school. All in all it was a successful visit. (Ms. Dewi , Primary School Principal)
SMP 2 Temanggung Visit “We want to see if any is different, but everything is.” On February 9, 2011, with an angklung music accompaniment presented by High School students the International Standard School of Victory Plus warmly welcomed visitors from SMP Temanggung, Central Java. This school visit was led by the Principal as well as one of the Dikdas team members in the national Educational Sustainable Development design, Mr. Indrotomo. During the school visit, the visitors toured the campus, which involved a stop to see the Primary, Middle, and High School classes, along with other facilities. While observing students in class, the visitors expressed their satisfaction of the high standard and quality of education being provided to the students. The campus tour was followed by a presentation on the school management, International Baccalaureate Programmes, and students learning activities at the Arjuna room. To attain a fruitful visit Ms Yustin invited the visitors to use the strategy of three N's, namely Nengo (observing), Niru (duplicating), and Nambahin (adding) as she also did the same things when having a visit to particular schools. In line with Ms Yustin's strategy of three N's Mr. Indrotomo uttered, “From the beginning one of our goals coming here is to find the difference, if any, to be adapted later at SMP Temanggung. In fact, everything we have seen, from the entrance gate to the hall on the fifth floor, so far is different.” Most of the guests also used this precious opportunity to pose questions and discuss the educational approach being put into action at SVP. While the presentation at the Arjuna room was in progress the
eight students joined an English class with grade 9 Andes. They were so pleased to get to know each other. They were particularly impressed that the students at SVP were studying English with a native speaker of English. They felt as if they had been studying in an English speaking country. It was really fun and creative. Shortly after the presentation at Arjuna room was concluded, the visitors proceeded to the cafeteria to have lunch. Preceded by a song performance by the 8th graders, Marco, the national champion of Yoyo contest amused the visitors by skillfully playing yoyo. Equally interesting the students from SMP 2 Temanggung took this opportunity to show their hidden talents by singing English songs as well. Before leaving, the visitors thanked the SVP administration, teachers, and staff for having made this visit an important milestone. Potential would be high for future cooperation between SVP and SMP 2 Tumanggung as Ms. Evelyn and Mr. Indrotomo signed an MOU together at once. This school visit was so beautiful to recall as it provided an excellent opportunity for both SMP 2 Temanggung and SMP Victory Plus to learn from each other. We are looking forward to another visit. (M. Hotman Simbolon, Middle School Vice Principal.)
Excursion to Kampoeng Maen In the past six weeks, Grade 1 students have been learning about “Who We Are” in their POI lesson. This topic discusses about the balance between factors such as nutrition, exercise and recreation that contribute to human health. To be healthy, we need to eat healthy food, do exercise and recreation to relax and refresh our body from daily routines. And to show their understanding about having a healthy body and mind, grade 1 students went on a picnic to Kampoeng Maen in Buperta Cibubur to have some fun activities. At the beginning, we had an ice-breaker that involved all of the students and teachers. Then, the students were divided into 5 groups and started with different activities. The students had fun with flying fox, spider web, balancing beam, wall climbing and many more. Without realizing, they were doing exercise. They understood that exercise is a physical activity to keep a person fit and healthy. After trying all of the activities, the student had their lunch that had been prepared from home. Their lunch consisted of healthy food chosen by themselves. Finally, the students understood that they can combine the three factors (nutrition, exercise and recreation) into a fun activity. So, let's have a healthy body and mind. Eat healthy food, move your body and take a break to relax your body and mind. (Ms. Airine – Gr. 1 Teacher))

SVP's Students Toward International Qualification Only 4 countries with the highest literacy rates are among the world's 20 richest nations, according to World Bank figures (The Economist, February 2011). Those countries are United Kingdom, Australia, United States and Canada. It is not coincidence that they are among the English speaking countries in the world. In fact, as the Economist continued its explanation, that in a globalised world, the choice of language is increasingly important. Countries such as Estonia and Tajikistan are among the countries with the highest literacy in the world, but with a language that only few people outside their border understand make it hard for them to compete globally. National wealth depends on the ability to participate in a global market, which demands a population literate in one of the few languages spoken by hundred of millions of people. SVP has made an excellent choice with English as its main medium of instructions which also makes SVP an international standard school. The founder of the school has seen this opportunity long before Indonesian government came up with the idea (and later on institutionalized this with the program) to internationalize some of their public schools. Even so, few nationalists recently feel uneasy with the use of English in this kind of schools. They are craving to promote the notion that the use of English in schools is a counterproductive act toward the nation constitution. However, it seems the government is still interested to experiment with this idea and for a few years now, it is likely that the government will stick with this program. As in our school, we will undoubtedly continue to use English as our main instruction and enrich our students with the implementation of international curricula. Furthermore, the use of English and other international recognized curriculum needs proper recognition. That is why SVP implements two international curricula; they are International Baccalaureate as well as the University of Cambridge International Examination (CIE). The latter is one of the world's largest provider of international qualifications that SVP has been officially approved as a centre since last January. Around 1.5 million students from 150 countries take

Cambridge examinations every year. Cambridge qualification is internationally recognized examination by schools, universities and employers around the globe and is equivalent to UK GCSE and Advance/Advance Subsidiary Level. Initially for this academic year, SVP is offering the International General Certificate for Secondary Education (IGCSE) for high school students. IGCSE is one of the qualifications offered by CIE for students at the age of 14 – 16 years old. This examination is an excellent preparation for A/AS Level, the Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), US Advanced Placement Program and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB-DP). Two subjects are offered for our Grade 10 and 11 students namely Mathematics and English as Second Language while Physics is only offered for Grade 10 students. The two former subjects are the basic ones and very useful for any choice of streaming that students intend to pursue for their higher level in Senior High School or their choice of study in the university. Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language is recognized by schools universities and companies as a certificate of the English Language proficiency. It is aimed at students whose first language is not English, but who use it as a lingua franca or language of study. Successful English as a Second Language candidates have better educational or employment advantage internationally as well as gaining lifelong skills. On the other hand, Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is accepted as proof of mathematical knowledge and understanding. Successful IGCSE Mathematics candidates gain lifelong skills, including: the development of their mathematical knowledge; confidence by developing a feel for numbers, patterns and relationships; an ability to consider and solve problems as well as presenting and interpreting the results. With these qualifications, we are equipping our students to stand out from the crowd in the international arena and become active global citizens. Hopefully, this effort will contribute to the nation's wealth and prosperity in the future, whatever their nationalities are.(Mr. Hendriadi, High School Principal)
