When the sun shines, when the sea is smooth as a mirror and you cannot tell where the sea ends and the sky begins - it can be difficult to imagine that the Wadden Sea is one of the most challenging waters for kayak paddling in Denmark. In fact, there are many days with calm weather where the biggest challenge is how to read the tide table correctly so that you are certain to have the current with you and enough water beneath the keel. On calm days, paddling around in the Wadden Sea is balm for the soul. The tide does most of the work. If you have timed it correctly, you will feel as though you are not on the ocean, but paddling downstream in a river - and that is an incredible experience. Of course, you can also do the opposite, paddle upstream coming and going, for the sake of training. Janderup Ladeplads Ho Ladeplads

On some trips it happens, albeit rarely, that seals are nowhere in evidence. The Wadden Sea is a nature reserve, the largest in Denmark and it is full of life; seals are plentiful and almost everywhere. If you are a bird enthusiast, the Wadden Sea is a paradise. It should be said that, as a rule, paddling around in the Wadden Sea is not for beginners. Some areas are safe enough, but if you are the least bit insecure, it is better to leave off. You can contact some of the local clubs in the area for further information. The route suggestions on these pages are all at the EPP2 level of difficulty, or higher. Once you have experienced the Wadden Sea in calm and quiet weather it is very difficult to even imagine how challenging it can be. The current can be incredibly strong and fierce. Should you turn turtle - you had better keep a good grip on the kayak. If the current goes one way and the wind the other, you can forget all about catching up to a kayak while swimming. If you paddle out into Tyske Bugt, you will have a chance to play in the waves. The breakers are just fine for surfing in an ocean kayak. Starting from, for example, Fanø, it is reasonably safe - that is to say with an onshore wind! The water is shallow a fair way out and with almost no stones to hurt you if you fall in. Should you be so unlucky as to turn upside down, sooner or later the wind and the current will bring you and your gear on shore. The all-pervading view in the Wadden Sea is sand and ocean. If you get south of Fanø, you will see colossal piles of sand. The area west of Mandø is 25 m² and pure sand - all of it - when it is not flooded, of course! So, if you have an inner Robinson Crusoe; then this is the place to play it out. Here is so much to see and often you have it all to yourself. When first you get a little out on the water, it is rare to meet other seafarers. For me, the biggest attraction in the Wadden Sea is the SEA. There is a lot of current; you have to time your trip just right so you manage to catch the current coming and going - or - to be at the right place just when the current is at its strongest so you can get into some serious playtime. Put the kayak in the water an evening when all is calm and you can almost glimpse the coast of English, the next point on the map. Or, do the same on a chilly autumn day with fierce winds and strong waves; the water is never the same. And that factor, together with the wind, is what decides and informs everything and everyone in this part of the world. The tide changes the landscape and it can be a surprise just how much it changes - everything. Peter Holland, Kayak Instructor The project is sponsored by:

Esbjerg: Esbjerg – Marbæk ca. 13 km. Route no. 1A

Kayak tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 61 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

Ho Bugt constitutes the northern part of the Wadden Sea. The natural environment is varying and follows the tide. Here, you will find Skallingen and the small island Langli both protected environments that are of great importance to the waterfowl in the Wadden Sea.

Put the kayak in the water by the landing stage in the yachting harbor. Start the trip at the rising tide and you will have the current with you out towards Ho Ladeplads.

At low tide, the birds congregate on the dry waddens that abounds with food.

You follow the quay and then the coast out towards Ho Ladeplads. Stay a little distance away from the coast. The water is very shallow in certain places and the mussel and oyster beds are not kind to the bottom of your kayak.

Skallingen is a protected environment and on Langli you can put up only from July 16 - Sep. 15.

You pass Hjerting beach, which is a good place to enjoy a little break.

The coast is marked by the tide. At low tide, the water is very shallow and from Esbjerg to Hjerting, the seabed is dominated by mussel and oyster beds. From Hjerting to around Marbæk, the seabed is sandy and you can launch your kayak regardless of the tide.

The trip continues along the coast to Marbæk, where there is a parking area, an open hearth, a restroom and even a shower where you can rinse off the salty sea.

As with many other places in the Wadden Sea, it is highly likely that seals and many different species of birds will be on view. It would be a good idea to bring a pair of binoculars. Before Esbjerg harbor was built, staple-rights were very important for the regional trade. Larger ships would dock and load their goods unto smaller barges or wagons that would then bring the goods further inland. There are several staple-rights in the Wadden Sea, but they are no longer active and Ho Ladeplads has moved a little in relation to its earlier placement.

Kayak tips Paddle using nautical chart no. 61 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

What can you experience on this trip?

Put the kayak in the water by Marbæk on the rising tide. Follow the brush buoys out towards Varde River.

Ho Bugt constitutes the northern part of the Wadden Sea. The natural environment is varying and follows the tide. Here, you will find Skallingen and the small island Langli both protected environments that are of great importance to the waterfowl in the Wadden Sea. At low tide, the birds congregate on the dry waddens that abounds with food.

The water is very shallow so, preferably, you should be at the estuary around the high tide. On your way back, preferably before the high tide, the tide will provide a little advantage when going up towards Janderup Ladeplads.

Skallingen is a protected environment and on Langli you can put up only from July 16 - Sep. 15.

The current does not turn in the river, but you will know the difference between paddling in the rising or the falling tide.

The coast is marked by the tide. At low tide, the water is very shallow and from Esbjerg to Hjerting the seabed is dominated by mussel and oyster beds. From Hjerting to around Marbæk, the seabed is sandy and you can launch your kayak regardless of the tide.

As with many other places in the Wadden Sea, it is highly likely that seals and many different species of birds will be on view. It would be a good idea to bring a pair of binoculars. From Varde River, you come from the ocean to the river and, now, the dominant sound images are the soft whistling of the reeds and the visibility is somewhat limited. If it is windy it can feel really good to get in the lee of the reeds by Janderup Ladeplads.

At low tide, the birds congregate on the dry waddens that abounds with food.

Put the kayak in the water by Ho Ladeplads and on the rising tide. You should be at the estuary around the high tide. Follow the brush buoys in towards the river. When you get to the river, you follow it to Janderup Ladeplads.

Skallingen is a protected environment and on Langli you can put up only from July 16 - Sep. 15. The trip goes from the ocean to the river, from large expanses, from wind and waves whistling in the reeds and to the lee with its somewhat limited visibility.

Kayak tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 61 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

This trip is not that long but you get the pleasure of paddling from mainland to island.

Put the kayak in the water by the landing stage in the yachting harbor.

As with all places throughout the Wadden Sea, you are likely to come across seals.

It is an advantage to do this trip on the rising tide since you will then be in the wake of the current coming in to Fanø.

When you leave Esbjerg, you are paddling between two worlds. On one side the dominant feature is the beach and nature and on the other it is the city and industry.

Once out of the yachting harbor, you must cross the channel. You must cross cleanly and quickly since the channel is heavily trafficked.

You have to cross the heavily trafficked channel between Esbjerg and Fanø. This is your biggest challenge. Once, on the other side of the channel, the sea is relatively calm. You are in the lee of Fanø and can follow the old channel towards Fanø.

When you are on the other side, just follow the coast towards Nordby. When you get to the old channel, you simply follow the brush buoys.

This trip is so short that you can do it if all you want is to cross over for a little bit of cozy country life.

At one point, you have to cross the channel used by the Fanø ferry. Again, you must do it as cleanly and quickly as possible. If the ferry is at the wharf, then wait till you are certain that an ambulance is not coming on board. In such a case, the ferry does not keep to the timetable, but leaves immediately. When you have crossed the channel, you follow the wharf further in to the yachting harbor.

What can you experience on this trip?

As with many other places in the Wadden Sea, you are likely to see and experience seals close up.

Put the kayak in by the landing stage at the yachting harbor. This way, you avoid covering yourself and your kayak in the black sludge found at the old landing stage and by the ferry landing. Standing on Fanø and looking towards Esbjerg, the yachting harbor is situated in basin no. 3, while basin no. 1 is where the ferry comes in.

When you paddle from Esbjerg, you paddle between two worlds. The dominant features on one side are beach and nature and on the other side, city and industry.

It is an advantage to put the kayak in on the falling tide since you will be in the wake of the current coming out from Fanø.

Follow the quay out to the ferry landing. You will have to cross the channel in order to get over to the old channel towards Esbjerg, but please wait until the ferry has left, or you can see that it is far away. Should the ferry take an ambulance onboard, it will leave as soon as the ambulance is onboard and not as the timetable indicates.

This trip is so short that it is perfect if you want is to paddle across for a bit of cozy country life.

When you have crossed the channel, you then follow the brush buoys going out of the old channel towards Esbjerg until you are out in the channel between Fanø and Esbjerg. You must cross the channel as quickly and directly as possible since there is a lot of traffic. Follow the quay till you can get all the way in to the yachting harbor.

Kayak Tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

This is one of my favorite routes in this area. Considering the area, this trip is a calm and quiet one in sheltered waters. If you time the trip to coincide with the tide, it is also an easy to paddle trip As with many other places in the Wadden Sea, you are likely to see seals on this trip. The trip will also take you close to two bird sanctuaries on Trinden and Keld Sand. There are many lively mullets jumping around in the waters. Landscape-wise, this trip is also one of the most varied. First, you pass fields, where cows graze all the way down to the water’s edge, then Fanø dune plantation and forest stands. The first part from Børsen to Nordby takes you through marshland via a small canal. During the summer, there is a small pontoon bridge right by Børsen, making it easy to put your kayak in or up.

You must time the trip such that Halen can be crossed +2 hours before or after the high tide and when the water level is min. +44 at Esbjerg when you get to Sønderho. Paddle from Nordby on the rising tide ca. 2 hours before the high tide since this is the only period during which you can navigate around Halen. Cross straight over Næs Søjord and follow the coastline from Halen to Hansodde. At Hansodde you will find the tidal line. So, if you have timed it correctly, you have got this far on the rising tide and can paddle the rest of the way on the falling tide. From Hansodde the trip goes south. You are not allowed to disembark on the bottom part of Albuebugten, so you simply cross the bay without following the brush buoys out to “Ludvig Løb”. Continue the trip going south along the coast until you have passed the camping grounds in Sønderho and am on the level with the mill in Sønderho. Here, you turn towards land and into a canal that will take you to Børsen. The canal is not especially wide and the water level must be minimum +44 at Esbjerg if you are to get through to Børsen.

Kayak tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

This trip takes you from harbor and city to busy waters between mainland and island, and then out to the open sea. This trip goes from calm waters along the harbor in Nordby, into rougher more rushing waters and to waves and strong currents.

This trip can be done no matter the water level, but doing it on the falling tide is an advantage since the tide gives you a helping hand. Put in by the Navigation School’s old landing stage, by the ferry landing or by the yachting harbor.

On one side you have Esbjerg with lots of shipping traffic and Fanø with WWII bunkers close to the sea, but as you round the northern point of Fanø, nature takes over. Here, the horizon is endless - on the water and on the sand.

When you put in by the ferry landing, you must be aware of the ferries that while going forward, can produce very high bow waves that can throw your kayak far up on land.

There are birds aplenty on the waddens and inquisitive seals checking what is happening. The seals will often keep you company a long way, sometimes very close by and, as a rule, behind you, so look back once in a while.

When you put in by the yachting harbor, you must be aware of the ferries that cross the channel. When an ambulance is coming onboard, the ferry will leave as soon as the ambulance is on board. In this case, you cannot depend on the timetable. To be safe, it is a good idea to wait and not cross the channel till after the ferry has left.

On the last leg of the trip, you will have the open sea on one side and Fanø’s wide and sandy beaches on the other

Follow the brush buoys in the old channel and out to buoy no. 16 and you are almost certain to be on deep enough water. You have to go further out than you immediately think, for the water is shallow across Fanø Sandende. From buoy no.16, you follow Fanø’s coastline. On the other side of the channel, you can see Langli Sand, where there is a seal colony, as well as Skallingen. On a clear day, you can sometimes see Horns Rev Windmill Park. In the channel between Skallingen and Fanø, you must be aware of several things. The channel is trafficked with hefty vessels that can pull quite large waves. One such can hit you in the back and pull all water away from under you.

This trip takes you from the open sea to the busy waters between mainland and island, to harbor and city. The horizon is endless - on the water and on the sand, but as you round the northern point on Fanø, you will be paddling in fairly crowded waters with very heavy shipping traffic. The current becomes stronger and the waters more unpredictable as you get into Grådyb between Fanø and Skallingen. On the last leg of the trip you paddle between Esbjerg and Fanø with distinct industry and bustling city on one side and beautiful nature on the other. Finally, you come in alongside the quay and the harbor promenade in Nordby, where there are often many cars waiting for the ferry. If you have a yen for showing off your unequalled kayak skills, this is where to give a demonstration - there is usually an attentive audience.

If you cross the channel to take up the kayak by the yachting harbor, you must be aware of the ferries that cross the channel. When an ambulance is coming onboard, the ferry will leave as soon as the ambulance is on board, and you cannot depend on the timetable. To be safe, it is a good idea to wait and not cross the channel till after the ferry has left.

Kayak tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

You will have the open sea, wide horizons, great beaches, seals, current, surf and finally, a calm and quiet journey into Sønderho. The first part of this trip takes place in the open sea with the many attendant consequences such as wind, waves and weather. When you get close to Feriekolonien, you will get to Galgerevet with its dramatically rough sea. The reason why it looks so fierce is that the water is very shallow; actually so shallow that you can step out of the kayak. It looks fierce and dramatic but is in fact quite safe.

This trip must be timed so you can enter the channel by Sønderho (ca. 14km). You must be by the channel when the water level is min. +44 in Esbjerg. Put in just below Rindby. If you follow the wastewater pipe going out, the sand is usually reasonably hard packed and your car can get quite close to the water. From Rindby, you paddle south while following the coast. By Feriekolonien, you must paddle outward so you get past Galgerevet.

On your right hand, ca. 300 meters further in, there is a seal colony, so there is 99% seal guaranty.

After Galgerevet, you get to the marked channel in towards Hønen and Sønderho.

You are now in waters with a heavy current, so depending on how you have timed the trip, you will be able to either relax while enjoying the flow of the wake or you will have to work hard through the back draught coming in towards Hønen, after which you will enter the canal going in to the old harbor in Sønderho.

On your right hand, ca. 300 meters further in, there is a huge seal colony. Here you must bear left in order to avoid scaring the seals into the water. If you have timed the trip correctly, you now follow the channel on the rising tide coming in to Sønderho. At eye level with Hønen, you follow the brush buoys to the left and into the small channel towards Sønderho and Børsen, where you can put up the kayak.

Kayak tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

You go from calm and sheltered waters to current, surf, the open sea, endless horizons and great beaches.

The trip must be timed so you can get out of the channel at Sønderho, and you can do this when the water level is +44 at Esbjerg.

Coming out in the channel towards the open sea, you will be in waters with a strong current, but here you can calmly follow the current out towards the open sea. On your left, about 300 meters before you get out of the channel there is a huge seal colony and almost always a lot of seals.

Put in on the falling tide so you are in the wake of the current coming out from Sønderho. Keep to the right in the first part of the channel. After the first turn, you may want to stay closer to the edges, for here the water is deepest.

Well out of the channel, you must get past Galgerevet, which always looks very dramatic. The reason why it looks so fierce is that the water is very shallow with many sandbanks; actually so shallow that you can step out of the kayak. It looks fierce and dramatic but is in fact quite safe.

Follow the brush buoys out to the channel, Feriekolonien and the open sea.

Once past Galgerevet, you can sit back and enjoy the trip with the open sea and gorgeous beaches all the way to Rindby.

You are now in the wake of the current towards the open sea. On your left, ca. 300 meters further in, there is a huge seal colony. Here you must bear right in order to avoid scaring the seals in to the water. When out in the open sea, you must get around Galgerevet. You must paddle out and around in order to get free of Galgerevet. You can see where it is, for the water is quite rough right there. When past Galgerevet, you just follow the coast going north until you get to Rindby. From the sea, it can be difficult to see Rindby, but if you keep an eye out for where the cars drive up and down on the beach, you are in clover and have hit the right spot.

Kayak Tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

This trip is one long crossing. Coming out from Sønderho, you will have 14 km of water in front of you. You will not be able to see the mainland. You may catch a glimpse of tall buildings such as windmills and Ribe Cathedral far away, plus Mandø and, of course, Fanø. So, this is a trip where you experience the feeling of being on the open sea. The water is deep and there is current in the channel, but if you paddle along the edges, you will find many places where you can touch bottom. As with many other places in the Wadden Sea, you are likely to see seals on this trip. The trip will also take you close to two bird sanctuaries on Trinden and Keld Sand. No trespassing, but rich possibilities for bird enthusiasts.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

A small pair of binoculars is a good idea. When you have entered Knudedyb, the brush buoys become more regular and easier to follow. In Knudedyb, you will have Mandø and Mandø Flak on the right. Although the water depth is not especially great you will now have 14 km of continuous water surface in front of you, for even at high tide, you will be unable to see the waddens. Start this trip on the rising tide so you are paddling in the back draught coming out from Sønderho, but in the flow of the wake when coming in to Kammerslusen. In any case, be aware of the current which can quite strong in Knudedyb. Follow the brush buoys in Knudedyb to when the current divides and you can follow the brush buoys into Ribe Strøm towards Kammerslusen. The brush buoys stand evenly distributed and can be followed all the way in towards the lock. The lock roster is available at the website for Esbjerg County. It changes from one month to the next, so it is necessary to check before your trip. Please see: http://www.esbjergkommune.dk/borger/natur,-park,-vandl%C3%B8b/vandl%C3%B8b-og-s%C3%B8er/ kammers¬lusen.aspx The current roster is posted by the lock. The phone number for Kammerslusen: +45 7542 0795. There is a small landing stage on the port side of Kammerslusen, where you can moor when the lock is closed. There is a stairwell going over the dyke, but it is quite steep. While it is possible to carry your kayak across the dyke, it is difficult since the stairwell is so steep. On the other side of the dyke there is a parking area so it is quite easy to drive to and from Kammerslusen.

Tide tables for the Wadden Sea are available here: DMI http://www.dmi.dk/dmi/index/danmark/vandstand. htm?pres=Vadehavet From Børsen and as you enter the channel, stay to the right where the water is the deepest. At the first turn, bear left and follow the brush buoys out towards and past Hønen. Kayak tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency. Put the kayak in by Børsen at Sønderho. There is a small pontoon bridge where you can put the kayak in or up. There is also a parking area nearby. In order to paddle out of the channel by Børsen, the water level at Esbjerg must be +44 or more. Put in just before the high tide and you are paddling in the back draught to begin with, but in the flow of the wake when coming in to Kaneslunden by Mandø. Stay to the right in the first part of the channel where there is ample water. After the first turn, you should stay to either side since the water is the shallowest in the middle. Follow the brush buoys from Børsen to Sønderkeldsand Løb. Please be aware that some of the buoys have been removed and those you can see, are not located as shown on nautical chart no. 60. Follow the brush buoys in Sønderkeldsand Løb till you get out in Knudedyb. The permanent buoys in Knudedyb have mostly been removed, so you cannot depend on nautical chart no. 60 as far as their location. Here you can follow Pater Meyers Sand and cross over towards the marked Mandø Gyde that you follow towards Mandø and on to the beach, where you can leave the kayak The brush buoys marking Mandø Gyde can be quite difficult to locate from far away. Alternatively, you can paddle over towards Mandø as soon as you come out from Sønderkeldsand Løb. Follow Mandø till you get to Mandø Gyde. Just behind the dyke, you will find B & B’s, camping grounds and a Holiday Center where you can rent rooms, so there are many opportunities for overnight accommodation if you don’t want to sleep on the beach. At the Holiday Center, there are public restrooms with drinking water. If you want to take up the kayak here, you will have to carry it over to the other side of the dyke where there is a road and a parking area. Mandø is well worth a visit. Mandø is an island totally at the mercy of the tide. The road to Mandø is only passable at the low tide and there are no ferries. This trip is difficult to manage in one day since everything depends on the tide, both to get out from Sønderho by Børsen and to get in to Mandø.

When you choose this trip, you can expect to see a great deal of bird-life. There are large bird colonies nearby and that can be both seen and heard. As with everywhere else in the Wadden Sea, you will often see seals. Around Mandø, you may also experience a sudden, but repeated roar in the water. That will be the mullets racing to get out of the way as you get near. This is a real Wadden Sea trip, so it must be planned according to the tide and to make it possible to experience some of what the Wadden Sea is known for - the current. Between Fanø and Mandø lies ”Knudedyb” where you can experience a fair bit of rough waters. Here, you will also experience the sensation of endless ocean and wide horizons because you are so far out to sea that you can almost not see the mainland. Towards the west, the next stop is England and at the high tide you cannot the sandbars.

Kayak tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

When you chose this trip, you can expect to see a great deal of bird-life. There are large bird colonies nearby and that can be both seen and heard.

Put the kayak in the water via the path going from behind Mandø Center to behind the dyke.

As with everywhere else in the Wadden Sea, you will often see seals.

Start the trip a couple of hours before the high tide. It varies a little when the water level is high enough to get out, but for coming in by Børsen in Sønderho, the water level in Esbjerg must be +44 or more. This is the gauge to use when you time your trip.

Around Mandø, you may also experience a sudden, but repeated roar in the water. That will be the mullets racing to get out of the way as you get near. Mandø is a wonderful place where it seems as though time slows down. You can sit by the dyke and follow the progress of the tide or you can explore the island with or without a guide.

Follow the brush buoys out to Knudedyb. Please be aware that most of the permanent buoys formerly situated in Knudedyb have been removed, so you cannot depend on nautical chart no. 60 for the location of buoys. In Knudedyb, you can either paddle straight towards Peter Meyers Sand or paddle along Mandø, but not cross Knudedyb until you can see the brush buoys marking Sønderkeldsand Løb.

Kore Sand is a sight worth experiencing. Approximately 20 square kilometers of sand is difficult to imagine - it must be experienced.

To paddle along Mandø is the shortest crossing, but a slightly longer distance.

This trip is a real Wadden Sea trip, so it must be planned according to the tide, and to make it possible to experience some of what the Wadden Sea is known for - the current.

Sønderkeldsand Løb is well marked. The same is true for the channel going in to Børsen in Sønderho, so you simply follow the brush buoys when approaching Sønderho. During the approach to Sønderho, you must initially stay somewhat to the right and, after the turn when you can see Børsen, you must stay to the left, since this is where the water is the deepest.

Between Fanø and Mandø lies Knudedyb where you can experience a fair bit of rough waters. Here, you will also experience the sensation of endless ocean and wide horizons because you are so far out to sea that you can almost not see the mainland. Kayak tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

This is a trip that can only be done in a kayak. You slip along Mandø in a channel not shown on any nautical chart.

In order to come along the inside from Mandø towards Rømø, the water level must be +40 by Kammerslusen. The buoys in Østerdyb have been removed, so set your sights on the eastern part of Rømø going in towards Juvre.

Most of the way, you paddle in fairly calm waters with rich possibilities for seeing seals and mullets. The mainland is far off so you will experience a sense of endless horizons, but the water is fairly shallow and you are well protected by Kore Sand as well as Juvre Sand. As with many other places in the Wadden Sea, you are likely to see seals on this trip. The trip will also take you close to two bird sanctuaries on Trinden and Keld Sand. Kayak Tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency. Put in on the rising tide so you are paddling through the back draught when you start out, but are in the flow of the wake in Østerdyb and in towards Mandø.

This trip can only be made in a kayak. You sneak along Mandø, but in a channel not found on the nautical chart. Most of the trip takes place in fairly quiet waters with rich opportunity for seeing seals and mullets. You are far from the mainland, so you get a sense of endless horizons, but the water is fairly shallow and you are protected by Kore Sand and Juvre Sand. There is sand on the main part of this trip, so if the weather is good it is a relatively safe trip.

To get on the inside by Mandø towards Rømø, the water level must be +40 by Kammerslusen, so it is imperative to time the trip by that precise reading. According to the locals, the channel going in to Juvre can be navigated no matter the tide, but if the tide is low, you can end up wading through the channel knee-deep in mud. All the brush buoys in Østerdyb have been removed, but from the most north-eastern point on Rømø, you can set your sight towards the most southern point on Mandø and more or less have the right direction.

Kayak tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

This trip will take you from the rough and somewhat arduous waters in the North Sea to the calm and shallow waters with grass and sheep grazing all the way down to the water’s edge.

Paddle on the falling tide so you are in the wake out of Juvre and further out in toJuvre deep. All marking have been removed, so you follow the coast line, but without getting too close since the water is shallower than it looks.

From vast expanses, wide beaches, lyme grass and dunes to a greener and milder landscape. Along the way, you paddle in waters where seals are frequent guests.

As already mentioned, you are not allowed to trespass on the northern part of Juvre since it is a military training area. So, take care of what needs taking care of before you start your trip. It is highly unlikely that a toilet visit is considered valid grounds for a port of refuge.

The southern part of Kore Sand is a protected environment due to a large colony of seals and a seal bank. Seals often lie close up to the markers by Juvre Sand.

When the black “balloons” are up, it means that there is target practice and that sailing in Juvre deep between Kore Sand and Rømø is forbidden.

It is a special experience paddling around Juvre Sand. On land, there are several targets used for shooting. They can be tanks or other vehicles.

Check whether there is target practice before you leave: http://www.flv.dk/milais/Navwarframe.html

You can see sheep grazing, but otherwise it is a very large area, more or less desolate - you are not allowed to trespass.

Rømø: Lakolk beach – Havneby ca. 18 km. Route no. 13A What can you experience on this trip? On this stretch there are places where the water can be quite deep close to the shore. This can produce strong waves. On this trip you will also see seals. You will be paddling along what is officially known as Denmark’s widest beach. That alone is an experience. During the summer, the beach hums with activity and you will notice a great deal of life. In fact, this is one of those trips, where you will have a fine audience should you feel like dazzling the landlubbers. At the high tide, there are several large channels that go far unto the beach. They are perfect, if you want to go ashore to enjoy your picnic lunch. You will get close to Sylt and you can paddle across, but if you do, remember your passport.

Kayak tips Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency. Put in the kayak by Lakolk beach. On the falling tide, the current is south westerly at Rømø, while in the opposite direction, the current is north easterly on the rising tide. If you put in the kayak in the last hours before the falling tide, you will be in the wake going south, and if you have timed it correctly, you will be at the southernmost point of Rømø when the tide is rising and thus, you will also have the current with you going in towards Havneby. You follow the coast line. It is shallow in some places but you can usually see it in the waves. Close to ”Hundehullet” the current can be extremely strong and, to the south, where the map is marked “forbidden area” the current can also be strong. You follow the coastline in to Havneby. Here you may run into quite a bit of traffic, and if nothing else, then the ferry to Sylt. Be aware that the waters opposite the harbor can be quite rough. According to the locals this is often the way it is no matter the weather. Follow the rules of the road at sea when entering the harbor. Rømø yacht club is on the left when you have passed the ferry landing.

Kayak tips

What can you experience on this trip?

Paddle using nautical chart no. 60 and the folder “Sejlads i Vadehavet” from the Danish Nature Agency.

This is one of those trips that are only possible when done in a kayak or a similar craft designed for shallow water. This trip goes from Havneby out into Isenhage towards Koldby Leje. So, the crossing will be ca. 3.5 km before you veer towards land, where you are protected by the coast. Here are many oyster banks and mullets. Also, there is quite a bit of fishing yarn that you must steer clear of. Since the trip runs close to the coast, there will be many green landscapes to look at. Cattle craze near the water’s edge and in some places people have small landing stages where their own boats are moored. It looks a little strange at the low tide when there is no water at all. On this trip, too, you will see seals and a lot of birds since there is a bird sanctuary on Jordsand but no trespassing. It would be a good idea to bring a pair of binoculars. It is an interesting experience to paddle through Vidå Lock. The lock is controlled by the tide, so you cannot get in at high tide or even close to the high tide.
