It was originally used to catch wild ducks for food. Today the duck decoy is used for the ringing of birds. Fanø was the only place in Denmark where four duck decoys were erected. Two of these were in use until 1931, when the use of duck decoys for catching ducks for human consumption was banned. From 1960 to 1990 Sønderho Old Duck Decoy was used by the Wildlife Institute of Biology for the ringing of ducks. This work has now been resumed by the Association for the Preservation of Sønderho Old Duck Decoy. Ribe VikingeCenter, Lustrupvej 4, Ribe. Ribe VikingeCenter buzzes with life and activity during the autumn half-term! At the manor, they're killing cockerels, geese and sheep, in the town's inn pots are bubbling away while the smell of bread fills the air, and the traders at the market place are giving excellent discounts so as to get all their wares sold before winter sets in. Whinnying and the sound of horseshoes ring through the air as the Vikings and their herd of Icelandic horses give a breathtaking riding display. At the archery range you can try your own hand with the bow and arrows, and the falconer's large saker falcon will allow itself to be tempted by a tasty hunk of meat and send a chill through the watching crowd as it dives down among them. Try-for-yourself activity Throw on a Viking cloak and slip through the time portal into the Vikings' world, where you will become a part of the Viking chieftain's family. Here you will help with the tasks that were allotted to children in the Viking Age: fetching water from the well, gathering firewood, grinding flour, tending the cooking pots, etc. Drop in at the woodcarver's workshop, where you can try working astride a shave horse. The Vikings can show you how to make your own felt ball, or maybe you'd like to cast a lucky coin? Organizer Ribe VikingeCenter (Entrance fee: 90,- 45,-) Borrow a Viking cloak Mon 9 May 2011 to Fri 21 October 2011, 10 am - 3.30 pm & 11 am - 5 pm. Ribe VikingeCenter, Lustrupvej 4, Ribe. How would you like to be a child in the Viking Age? If only for 20 minutes? In the Thing House of Ribe Town, 825 AD, you may borrow a Viking cloak and felted cap, and imagine you are a Viking child. For as long as you choose to wear the clothes, you will be a foster child in the town chieftain's family, carrying out the tasks that were allotted to children in the Viking Age. Perhaps you will be asked to fetch water from the well, or to catch a fish, grind flour or cook, or perhaps the chieftain will need someone to shine up his dirty leather shoes! You never know in advance what the day will be like, but unlike the children of 1200 years ago you are in the fortunate position of being able to take off your Viking clothes when you no longer feel like taking part in the game. Organizer Ribe VikingeCenter (Entrance fee: 90,- 45,-)

Here you can have a chat with the landowner about agriculture and his many animals. The blacksmith, glass bead maker, silversmith, wood turner and potter work here side by side with the traders, who are happy to sell their wares when they spot a likely taker. Taste, smell, listen and play Ribe town, 825 AD, has been reconstructed by the most skilled Viking carpenters in Denmark.
