Denmark – the Viking DESTINATION

Discover the Danish spirit of the legendary Beowulf ST KATHARINE DOCKS 6TH TO 8TH OF AUGUST 2012

6TH TO 8TH OF AUGUST

Welcome to Denmark - the Viking destination Are you interested in cultural history? In having fun with your family? And what about spending time with friendly people? Then Denmark, the Viking destination of Scandinavia, is the answer! Our Viking past is as alive today as it was between AD 750 and AD 1050, when the Vikings really ruled the world and the waters. Vikings still suffer from a reputation of being cruel and barbaric, but rest assured that the Vikings you’ll meet today will greet you in peace. Denmark truly has a lot to offer with a Viking touch for both families and hardcore enthusiasts: in Lejre, a mythical aura hangs in the air and it’s likely that you’ll see the hero Beowulf in battle with Grendel in the distance. In Roskilde and Ladby you can get up close and personal with the magnificent Viking ships - the very reason why the Vikings became such an important power at the time. However, internal power was hard to hold on to and this is clear when visiting the impressive ring fortresses Trelleborg and Fyrkat. Yet most Vikings lived quite ordinary lives in well-organised towns, where they made a living from farming the land, trading their goods and socialising with family and friends. Get a glimpse of what this was like in Ribe and Lindholm Høje, Roskilde and Lejre Museums; see it dramatically performed in Frederikssund and play friendly Viking games in Gerlev. The final stop should be in Jelling to enjoy the beautiful rune stone known to all Danes as the birth certificate of our nation, which also marks the end of an era The Viking Era. In Denmark many Viking adventures await you, but this summer we have brought some of them to you! We bid you welcome in St. Katharine Docks from the 6th to the 8th of August 2012, 11am to 10pm. Read more on the back of this brochure about what to expect. The Vikings are coming back - but this time we come in peace. Please join us.

A glimpse of the daily life of a Viking Jelling – a royal town of world heritage The year was AD 965. The Viking king, Harald Bluetooth, renounced the Norse gods and embraced Christianity. He recorded this event on a rune stone. The rune stone also hails his achievements in uniting Denmark and Norway and bringing Christianity to the Danes, which is why the stone is often referred to as “Denmark’s birth certificate”. King Harald also created two mighty royal barrows and a church on the site. The Jelling Monuments are considered the most important monuments from the Viking Age in Europe and are therefore listed as UNESCO World Heritage. www.visitvejle.com

How did they actually live in the Iron Age and Viking Age in Northern Jutland? What did they eat and drink? How did they work and celebrate and what did they believe in? You can get a fascinating insight into the daily life of the Vikings by visiting the burial site and museum, Lindholm Høje, close to Aalborg. Or stop off at the Viking fortress Fyrkat in Hobro. www.nordmus.dk
