As tailoring moves into the mainstream, and the line between smart and casual clothes is increasingly blurred, workwear is more versatile than ever. Which is excellent news – because shopping is way more fun when it’s for clothes you’ll be wearing for weekend fun-times, and not just the daily grind. Once considered office-only attire, blazers, blouses and Savile Row-inspired checks are breaking into off-duty territory, so you can invest in these on-trend pieces and mix them into your existing wardrobe with ease.

If there’s one colour in one key item to think about this spring, it’s the daffodil yellow dress. Worn to bring cheer – it’s the colour that captures our attention more than any other. Yellow represents youth, fun, joy, sunshine and other happy feelings. But if you’re not brave enough to wear it head-to-toe opt for a splash. The right combo will make your outfit shine. Like art, jewellery is extremely personal and sentimental. So a big welcome this month to Northern Star Jewellery in Mumbles and its bespoke design service. Its designers and craftsmen work with gold, silver and precious gems using a computer aided design system with some breath taking results! Need convincing? Then check this out... last December the company was approached to design and produce rings for two sisters who had recently lost their mother and asked if they could make two pieces instead using their mother’s gold. A catwalk feel for a high street steal? Yes please... Hobbs are well known for their florals of course. And we normally expect a riot of colour from them. But they do toned-down too! This dreamily romantic look really is an occasion no-brainer!

We all have that friend who prefers the company of their cat to the conversation of a fellow human being. And who are we to judge?! Yes they may have cat hairs on their jumper and spend a fortune on cat treats but if it makes little Whiskers happy than that’s all that matters! And when they’ve splashed out on fancy cat food and perfumed litter, carrying it home in a plain old carrier bag just doesn’t do it justice, does it? This personalised tote bag is perfect for their feline food shopping! £14.99. gettingpersonal.co.uk

BEAUTY NEWS From lip savers to bath oil, here are some winning pampering products

retreat & relax Lisa Walsh takes a pampering break from shopping at John Lewis’ Beauty Retreat

Instead of shopping ’til you drop, take a pit-stop facial and shoulder massage at John Lewis’ Beauty Retreat. The 45-minute treatment certainly helped refresh my body and tired, stressed complexion. The treatment rooms in Cardiff, close to the beauty department on the ground floor, are far enough away from shoppers to allow you to truly relax with some indulgent pampering. I was invited along to discover one of the world’s most luxurious skincare ranges, La Prairie, and I was keen to try its new super-extravagant Caviar Pearl Infusion Serum. My friendly therapist Kate showed me to my room complete with spa table, soft music and thick, fluffy white towels. She asked me about my skin type, prepared me for my treatment and told me about the range. Kate began by thoroughly removing my makeup and cleansing my skin with La Prairie Purifying Cream Cleanser (£60). The consistency was smooth and my skin felt fresh and clean after it was removed using hot towels. Next, up came Cellular Mineral Face Exfoliator (£99) with beads containing finely granulated diamond dust particles (yes, real diamonds!) to scrub away skin cells. A refining toner (£77) was followed by a delightful shoulder and hand massage before Kate applied some of the new White Caviar Pearl Infusion Serum (£378) which targets dark spots, redness and greyness and was locked in with a Luxe Caviar Sleep Mask (£252) to replenish moisture. The serum felt light in both fragrance and texture and my skin felt cold and wet as

the liquids were left to melt in. From diamonds to caviar, the precious La Prairie ingredients felt like something really special was landing on my skin. Before I could examine its results, Skin Caviar eye cream (£249) was followed by the outrageously expensive La Prairie Skin Caviar Absolute Filler (£410). It is the richest, silkiest, moisturiser I have ever felt, which may be one reason why this anti-aging cream commands one of the most expensive price tags on the market. Finishing with some lip balm A Porter (£119), I hit peak relaxation and could easily have stayed for a snooze. However, it was time to grab my belongings and head back to the high street. I did feel a little bare shopping without any make-up, but fresh-faced and refreshed. Glowing skin replaced the lacklustre complexion I’d walked into John Lewis with. The Beauty Retreat, without doubt, is the retailer’s best-kept secret. What’s not to love about intense relaxation while trying out some fantastic creams and potions, with the £50 cost of the Art of Beauty facial fully redeemable on products? Plan your next shopping trip. Contact Katie or Krystle on 029 2053 6007 (ext 4290) to book.

SOOTHE YOUR SOUL Looking for a serious pick-me-up to wave goodbye to winter? There’s nothing more relaxing after a busy day – especially on a cold winter night – than a soothing soak in the tub. Choose Aromatherapy Associates’ deep relax bath and shower oil, Space NK, £45, to soothe and relax your muscles for a better night’s sleep.

ADD SOME candleLIGHT The much-loved signature fragrance of Elemis Pro-Collagen cleansing balm, is now in candle form. Create an ambience and fill the air with lavender, eucalyptus and geranium, £27.50, available at Beauty Within, Medi Spa, Cowbridge.

LIP SAVER

When it comes to lips, gloss is out of favour this season – it’s all about lipsticks that deliver superb colour and erase every last trace of shine from your pout. Here are two products that fit the bill. 1. Clinique Pop lip shadow cushion matte lip powder is inspired by backstage make-up artists who press powder over lipstick to soak up any shine and give a truly matte finish. This new lippy is available in eight shades. Clinique Pop lip shadow cushion matte lip powder, £16.50, House of Fraser

2. Chanel’s Rouge Allure Ink tints your lips with a bold, matte and luminous shade. It glides on and stays all day, keeping your lips looking kissably smooth and comes in nine smouldering shades. Rouge Allure ink matte liquid lip colour, £28, John Lewis

Stylist & salon owner Lara Johnson shares her tips in her monthly column.

Colour statement Model: Sophia Shallai Occupation: Model and student

SOPHIA SAYS... My hair has been short for a long time and i have been growing it. The problem has been I haven’t really known what I want to grow it to. The thing that I love about short hair is that it can be really directional, I love retro looks but wanted a style that was a modern version. The team at Lara Johnson Lifestyle really listened to me and came up with a look that had direction with both the cut and colour. The condition feels so much better and it is really easy to style. So Happy!

LARA JOHNSON LIFESTYLE SAYS... Sophia has been growing her hair from a short style for a few months and hasn’t had it trimmed. It is important to trim the hair even if you are growing it to keep it healthy and to stop it splitting. We decided to work Sophia’s grown out shape into a retro look that had a bit more direction, this coming season will see some sixties shapes returning, plenty of ‘the Purdey’, Page Boy and Pixie cuts. Prior to the makeover Sophia’s hair has been bleached with a dark panel, it was in need of moisture as well as a completely updated colour. We created shine and texture with some ‘on trend’ muted colours that looked much softer but still had as much of an impact

MEET THEA... This month’s model is Thea, a buyer and has recently gone onto maternity leave. Being 8.5 months pregnant she asked if she could have a makeover to make her feel glamorous again before the birth. Thea has great skin but suffers with a little pigmentation; I prepared the Before... skin with Leonor Greyl Natural Beautifying Oil, and some Touch in Sol No Pore-blem Primer. Using Power-Play by Cover FX, Powerplay is a brand new revolutionary foundation that is superlightweight, really long-wear, Matte not flat and comes in an incredible 40 shades. I applied this lightly with a sponge and gently built it up on anywhere that needed it. Under the eyes I used Hourglass Hidden Corrective Concealer setting it lightly with Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder. To shape the face I used Cover FX Cream Contour Palette applying lightly with a brush and softening the edges with the sponge, Setting the skin with Cover FX Perfect Setting Powder applied with a powder puff in agentle press and roll motion. On the eyes I applied Cover FX’s brand new Shimmer Veil in Magic all over the movable part of the lid, blending the edges for a great finish. Using the Urban Decay Naked Palette I used a mid-brown to gently sculpt the socket and a slightly deeper tone to accentuate the outer lash line. Using my favourite “Tight-line” technique I lined the lash line using a flat liner brush and a black gel liner. Curling the lash using my Kevyn Aucoin lash curler and finishing with his volumising mascara it left the eyes superbly defined. On the cheek I used Nars Orgasm powder Blush and my favourite Victoria Beckham Modern Mercury Highlight which I also took it to the cheekbones, cupids bow, brow bone and tip of the nose. On the lip I used Estee Lauder Pure Colour lip gloss. To complete the look I used NYX brow shaper in Ash Blonde and Brunette to recreate the fullness and shape to Thea’s brows. As you can see, Thea Looks incredible and great news, Baby Joseph Samuel Peters was born on 22-01-2018.

stop Why we need to

calling food ‘bad

detox the way we talk about eating

The conversations we have with ourselves and others about food can be deeply damaging, says Cardiff clinical psychologist, Dr Helen McCarthy, The Appetite Doctor. Here’s how to fight the temptation to bad-mouth meal-times and trash-talk treats, and form healthy eating habits for good... How often do you hear someone in the office say they’ve been ‘naughty’ after having another chocolate? Or see someone you follow on Instagram hashtag a dessert with #guiltypleasure? According to clinical psychologist, Dr Helen McCarthy, talking negatively about food not only has a huge impact on our self-esteem, but it can actually get in the way of our progress if we’re trying to lose weight healthily. Helen, who runs The Appetite Doctor, helping people to lose weight by changing their attitudes and behaviours around eating, says adapting the language we use around food is crucial if we’re trying to change habits such as over-eating and stress and boredom snacking. “It starts with the way we talk to ourselves about food,” says Helen, who spent 13 years in the NHS and now works from private practices in Cardiff, Bristol and London. Part of her therapy involves taking clients to high-end restaurants for three-course meals in an approach that’s designed to celebrate, rather than demonise, food. Helen believes our moment-to-moment thoughts are generated by the underlying beliefs we hold about ourselves, based on early experiences. “So you can start secondary school feeling OK about yourself but if you’re on the receiving end of a bunch of bullies, the put-downs will affect how you see yourself. You’ll feel inferior and unworthy,” she says. So why does this matter in relation to food and eating? “When we tell ourselves we’re greedy, or weak or that we’re unworthy, we act as though we are,” adds Helen. “Which means we eat as though we are. But by making small changes to how we think and talk about food, we can make long-term changes to how we eat.”

Seven ways to Cure an Unhealthy Relationship With Food

1

Treat your food as a blessing.

Don’t make lovely food into the enemy. See it as the blessing it is. Rather than enjoying something that could be really pleasurable, we often spoil the enjoyment. And far from this making us eat less, we turn to eating in secret, or apologising for eating.

2

Remember who’s listening.

When children and teenagers hear us, or see a social media post where we’ve said we’ve ‘let ourselves go’, we’re giving them the message that eating is shameful or sinful. So resist the temptation and encourage a healthy positivity around food.

3

Don’t ‘ban’ foods.

4

Stop fighting with yourself.

5

Gently challenge negative thoughts.

6

Imagine your two selves at a table.

It’s a common reply when someone offers a piece of cake. “No thanks, I’m being good.” One, this creates negative food associations and two, it has a counter-productive effect if we’re trying to lose weight. Research shows when people who view certain foods as ‘bad’ are given a disallowed food (the laboratory experiments used milkshakes), they eat more ice cream in the second part of the experiment. This creates a “what the hell” effect because of thinking, “What the hell, I’ve already blown my diet by having that milkshake; I might as well keep going with the ice cream”.

Change the words you use to describe eating, to noticing and accepting what you’re doing. For example, “I notice that I’m eating when I didn’t mean to, but that’s OK”. Use calmer language to talk yourself in a way that actually helps, like you’d talk to a friend.

And dispute the beliefs driving them. Get a notebook, make two vertical columns and title them “Negative thought” and “Alternative realistic thought”. Practise focusing on the alternative thoughts.

Here are ways to stop the toxic chat and start developing a healthier relationship with eating...

Visualise two parts of yourself – the one who’s critical about how you eat, and the one who does the eating. Imagine the two parts sitting together, talking about changing how you eat. Get each to say what they think and get the other to “listen”. Then vice versa to discover what’s going on beneath an internal battle.

Dr Helen McCarthy is based at Cyncoed Consulting Rooms in Cardiff and runs one-on-one therapy and group sessions.

7

Dr Helen McCarthy is running an eight-week, group weightloss course at Litfield House Medical Centre, Bristol from April 17. See Eventbrite or Facebook for details.

Unfollow ‘slim spam’.

I saw one celebrity post a meme that said “I’ve gone from eating pigs in blankets to being the pig in a blanket”. Friends on a quest to lose weight can constantly post bikini emojis and photos of skinny models with the hashtag #bodygoals. While that’s their prerogative, and there’s no shame in wanting to lose weight, it can interfere with your own goals and put unnecessary pressure on you. www.theappetitedoctor.co.uk.

What sitting at a desk all day is doing to your health... As new research finds that standing could help you lose weight, Lauren Taylor looks into just how bad excessive sitting is for our health Millions of us have sedentary jobs, often spending nine or 10 hours a day sitting hunched over a keyboard. New research has found that substituting time spent sitting for standing six hours a day could help people lose 2.5kg over a year. The study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, found that standing burned 0.15 kcal per minute more than sitting, and the effects were more pronounced in men than women. Standing desks are popular in offices in Sweden, Denmark and Germany, and it’s slowly catching on here. But is sitting down for long periods of time really that bad? Here’s how experts say it can affect different areas of the body and our overall health. Sitting doesn’t use many muscles A different number and volume of muscles are involved in sitting compared to standing. GP Dr Clare Morrison from MedExpress says: “Sitting down for too long can lead to muscle atrophy in the leg and gluteal areas. Essentially, the body is ‘shutting down’ while sitting, and there is little muscle activity. This means muscles become weaker and weaker. Sitting down can also cause hip flexor muscles to shorten, leading to hip problems.” It could make you eat more than your body needs It’s thought that excessive sitting causes the metabolism to slow down. Which Dr Morrison says “can affect the ability to regulate blood sugar and blood pressure. But sitting could also mean you take in more food than you need as well. Dr Dimitrios Paschos, consultant psychiatrist at Re:Cognition Health, says: “You’re more likely to eat unhealthy food when you stay at your desk, which can not only affect health

40 swansealife.co.uk

in the long term, but also impair your concentration later on in the afternoon. We also tend to eat faster when at our desks, which means the stomach doesn’t have enough time to send signals of fullness to the brain.” Your posture is probably poor whenever you sit This won’t come as a surprise, but we were designed to move and sit up straight. “Not many people will have their desk set up correctly. Sitting in an awkward position for extended periods will contribute to back pain,” says chiropractor Rishi Loatey, from the British Chiropractic Association. “Ideally, you shouldn’t sit at your computer for more than 40 minutes, and sitting correctly at your desk is important – feet flat on the ground, with bent knees and a downward slope from your hips to your knees’.” John Kiely, senior lecturer in elite performance at the University of Central Lancashire, adds: “Long periods of sitting in the same position is also bad for your heart, as it prevents proper circulation.” Some organ functions are reduced When we sit down, it’s probably not long before most people unintentionally find themselves in a slouch, hunched over the keyboard. “Did you know that leaning or hunching too much can affect your lung capacity by as much as 30%?” says Dr Morrison. “This means your heart and brain don’t receive as

much oxygenated blood, and can lead to shortness of breath, clouded thinking and even heart and vascular disease. “When we’re sat down our bowel functions are less efficient than when we stand. This is why people who are bedridden for a long period of time, tend to suffer from bowel issues,” she says. Eyesight can be affected in the long-term Long days staring at a computer screen followed by evenings and weekends staring at a TV or other devices like smartphones, means modern lives can involve a lot of screen time. Dr Morrison says: “The tiny muscles inside your eyeball can grow tired from focusing on a single point. In some cases you can no longer focus. Issues are typically short-lived, however, there’s some evidence that bright light can damage your retinas irreversibly.” While Kiely says: “Too much screen time can lead to a loss of peripheral vision later in life. We are evolved to be able to notice things on either side of us, but the more we focus on a screen, the less able we are to do this as we age.” The longer you sit... “In a recent review of scientific studies, it was found that the more hours people sat, the higher the number of negative health outcomes. ‘Heavy sitters’, defined as those who sat down for seven to nine hours per day, showed a 90% greater risk of developing diabetes and an 18% higher chance of dying of heart disease or cancer than those who sat less, “ says Richard Holmes, director of wellbeing at Westfield Health.

Eggs, Eggs and more Eggs

With all the supermarket shelves all full of Easter eggs and Mother’s Day approaching too my, thoughts turned to eggs of the natural variety this month... Making babies

This month Sketty GP and Swansea Life doctor Charlotte Jones looks at fertility assessment and treatment pathways...

You are born with a few million eggs but only one is released at a time. Unfortunately, as we get older, the number and quality of eggs available diminishes which means that it can be trickier to get pregnant and there is also an increased risk of having genetic abnormalities. If you are planning a baby or want to talk through your worries about conceiving then there is a wealth of advice on line or you can of course talk to your GP. Things that will optimise your likelihood of falling pregnancy include adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle and taking folic acid and vitamin D. When you do fall pregnant your midwife and / or GP will give you more specific advice on diet foods to avoid, exercise, actions if you have pets at home and check your rubella status to ensure you are covered. You should also have the flu and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccinations to protect your baby. Sadly, not everyone finds it easy to conceive so if you have been trying to conceive for more than a year then do speak to your GP who will probably advise you have some blood tests and your partner have a sperm sample analysed. Referrals to specialists are usually done when you have been trying to conceive for two years (unless you are aged over 35 or have other specific medical conditions meaning an earlier referral would be helpful).

Ovarian Cysts These are fluid filled sacs that develop on an ovary. They are common and patients often don’t have any symptoms. However, if they become very big OR burst OR interrupt the blood flow to the ovaries then you may get: heavy periods, irregular periods, pain during intercourse, pain or frequency when going to the toilet, bloating of the stomach and sometimes difficulty falling pregnant (although they don’t prevent you getting pregnant usually). Most are harmless but some can be sinister. Cysts can sometimes be felt as lumps during an internal examination OR found on 42 swansealife.co.uk

an ultrasound scan. When a cyst is found, the most common course of action is to repeat it in a few months to see if it is still there. If it is very big and causing significant symptoms, your GP will usually refer you to see a gynaecologist. If a cyst looks suspicious, your GP will recommend some bloods tests and urgently refer you to see a gynaecologist.

Ovarian Cancer Patients often present late to their GP because the symptoms are quite vague and can include: fatigue, feeling full all the time, bloating, pain in the lower stomach, back pain, change in bowel or urinary habit, lump in stomach, pain during intercourse, post menopausal bleeding. You are more at risk of ovarian cancer if you are menopausal, infertile, using HRT, overweight, tall and have a family history of ovarian cancer. Many people ask is there a screening test for ovarian cancer? Developing an accurate screening test is not quite as simple as it sounds. This is being looked at, but currently your GP will examine you if they think ovarian cancer could account for your symptoms and will often offer you a blood test, scan and urgent referral as appropriate. For more information take a look at: www. macmillan.org.uk

Polycystic Ovarian Disease Polycystic ovaries is a condition where the body produces “many cysts” (follicles) which affects the normal hormonal profile leading to an excess of irregular periods due to the follicles (cysts) not maturing and an excess of testosterone which can cause: acne, excess hair production and obesity. Not everyone has symptoms though. There are treatments available for the symptoms usually involving hormonal preparations but losing weight, eating healthily etc can definitely help too. Back to enjoying the chocolate egg variety now...Enjoy Easter all.

SUBTLE SIGNS OF CANCER YOU SHOULD NEVER IGNORE

It’s not just lumps and bumps that need to be checked out. Liz Connor asks the experts about the less obvious warning sings to look out for. Irregular periods and bleeding between cycles, or after sex, can also be a cause for concern in younger women, but this could also be indicative of other health problems or hormonal fluctuations. As before, it’s always best to go and see your doctor as soon as possible, and let them decide if further investigations are needed. Additionally, rectal bleeding shouldn’t be ignored. “While it’s most commonly linked to a haemorrhoid, rectal bleeding with dark blood should be enough of a concern to make a trip to the GP,” adds Dr Schaefer.

There are over 200 different types of cancer in total, and more than one in three people will develop some form of the condition during their lifetime, so it’s important to be clued-up on the potential warning signs that something isn’t quite right. Where it gets tricky though, is when those warning signs aren’t exactly obvious. Most of us know to get any unusual lumps checked out by a doctor, but there are several other more subtle, or less talked-about, symptoms that are just as important to know about - many of which we often easily brush aside and ignore. Treatments work best when cancer is caught early, so noticing any unusual changes - and getting them checked out - sooner rather than later can make all the difference to your health. Remember, most of the time, these ‘symptoms’ will turn out to be entirely harmless and don’t automatically mean you have cancer, but it’s always best to get them seen by a doctor and talk through your concerns.

Here, medical experts explain more about some of the red flags that many people overlook...

1

Unexplained weight loss

Dropping a dress size might seem like good news at first, but if you haven’t made any significant changes to your diet or exercise routine, it could be a sign that something is wrong. “Many different cancers cause weight loss,” says Dr Clare Morrison, speaking on behalf of MedExpress (medexpress.co.uk). “This is because tumours use up a lot of energy and nutrition as they grow.” Small fluctuations in weight are normal, and it’s not uncommon for a noticeable change in your size to happen after a stressful event - but unexplained significant weight loss should never be ignored. “Many people with cancer experience weight loss at some point, but it occurs most often with cancers of the stomach, oesophagus, pancreas or lung,” says Dr Tim Woodman, medical director at 44 swansealife.co.uk

Bupa UK (bupa.co.uk). If you’re struggling to put any lost weight back on, speak to your GP, as they will be able to rule out any serious illnesses.

2

Ongoing tiredness

We all have those days where we can’t seem to keep our eyes open at our desk, and if your lifestyle is particularly demanding and you’re not getting enough sleep, then it stands to reason that you’re going to feel tired. But unusual exhaustion that’s been going on for a while, could be due to something else going on beneath the surface. “Fatigue can be an early sign of cancer; a continuous feeling of exhaustion that doesn’t get better even after you rest,” says Dr Jan Schaefer, chief medical officer at Medigo (medigo.com). “This a symptom that is relatively easy to miss, especially if you lead a busy lifestyle.” Often, fatigue occurs in the early stages of cancer because of blood loss in the body. “Cancers of the digestive tract tend to cause internal bleeding,” says Dr Morrison. “While the blood loss may be too subtle to notice in one’s faeces, it may gradually lead to anaemia. The first sign of this may be fatigue and exhaustion, as well as shortness of breath, palpitations and ankle swelling.”

3

Unexplained or irregular bleeding

Both women and men can experience this, explains Dr Schaefer. “If a woman bleeds 12 months after menopause, it’s a worrying sign - no matter if the bleeding is light or not - as it could signify cervical or endometrial cancer.”

4

Swelling in the neck

Medical advice says that we should regularly check our breasts and testicles for any errant lumps or bumps, but your neck could also be a key indicator of cancerous cells. “Many patients don’t realise the significance of a persistent neck lump, and leave it too long before seeing a doctor,” warns Dr Morrison. “It is a worrying symptom, as it can signify a tumour anywhere in the head or neck, including cancer of the mouth, throat, ear, sinuses, larynx [voice box] or thyroid.” She explains that neck growths can also be a sign of blood cancer and lymphoma: “Neck swellings are common with viral infections, but these usually settle down within a couple of weeks. If a swelling persists for six weeks or more, they should be examined by a specialist.”

5

Changes to bowel habits

Our bowel patterns can tend to vary from day to day, depending on what we’ve eaten or how stressed we are. However, any ongoing usual pattern changes, particularly if you are producing more frequent, smaller stools, like pellets or pencil-thin motions, could indicate bowel cancer. Dr Morrison explains that other symptoms may include rectal bleeding, weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain and/or swelling, or a feeling that the bowels aren’t emptying fully: “Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, yet it often causes no symptoms until it has progressed to a large tumour. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better the prognosis, so these symptoms should always be taken seriously.”

Emily Kate Mason & Greg James Mander Boutique owner Emily Kate Mason marries aircraft engineer Greg James Mander after a romantic proposal in America’s most popular city

Where did you get married?

How did you choose the venue?

Our service was at the beautiful parish church in Llantrisant, followed by a reception at Hensol Castle, in the Vale Resort. Laura Smith was our wedding planner. We met so many times before the wedding that we ended up becoming friends and she came to our wedding! We couldn’t have wished for a better wedding planner – I can’t recommend her enough.

Greg was having a shoulder operation in the Vale Hospital and his room overlooked Hensol Castle. We took a walk and Greg asked me if I wanted to book our wedding there and then. I fell in love with the castle immediately. We put a date on a two-week hold to tell family and friends, then secured it two weeks later.

Tell us about your engagement? It was a few years ago on a Christmas-time trip to New York. I’m a trained dancer and we were on our way to see a group of dancers performing a Christmas show in Radio City, near the famous Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree. Greg had a photographer to take a picture of him proposing to me in front of the tree, where he gave me a Vera Wang ring. How long did the day take to plan? We booked the venue two and a half years ahead of the date and I pretty much started planning then. I am extremely close to my mother and she was incredibly helpful. I run my own business and Greg works shifts, so it wasn’t always easy for us to meet suppliers together. My mother came everywhere and anywhere with me. My maid of honour, Jessica Griffiths, helped organise the best hen weekend in Marbella, too.

How did you choose your outfits? Greg was so easy going, bless him – he let me choose what I wanted, including the colour scheme. I’m not into bright colours, patterns and bold things – I prefer neutral and I wanted to keep the theme looking classy. I found a piece of ribbon that was a champagne colour and placed it next to some white roses in my house. It looked perfect and I decided on the colour for our bridesmaids – I just needed to find dresses! I was in a bridal shop looking for a dress for myself when I come across them. I tried one on and it hung beautifully. My heart was set and the seven bridesmaids looked simply stunning. Greg wanted a black suit with a dickie bow and black tie, which suited a castle wedding perfectly. All the men looked so smart. My Vera Wang dress was one of the first few I tried on. They say you know when you

find the perfect dress. I think I just expected the dress to speak to me. It felt like I went to every wedding dress shop in the UK and took my poor mother and mother-in-law with me. Most dresses felt too big and flouncy and then the plainer ones that I liked on the hanger didn’t do much for me when I tried them on. I stopped shopping for a few months as I was getting confused. Eventually, I booked an appointment in Vera Wang three times to try the same dress on. They were absolutely amazing – the kindest, warmest, welcoming people. I was scared to commit, but something kept

pulling me back and I eventually said yes to the dress! It was a massive relief. I absolutely love my dress. I can’t thank my parents enough for buying it for me. My dressmaker, Maria, was Alexandra McQueen’s dressmaker. She is the kindest lady I have ever met and made me an extra-long Vera Wang veil for the aisle. My mother wore a Ronald Joyce champagne dress and my mother-in-law wore a dusty pale pink one. They both looked absolutely beautiful and I loved the way the colours all blended.

Your favourite moments... During the ceremony the vicar asked us to step back and take a look at each other, to take in the moment, as we wouldn’t get another chance during the day – I will never forget that feeling. It was a special moment neither of us will ever forget. It still gives me a lump in my throat thinking about it. What were some of your favourite special touches? I made lots of things myself for the wedding and I really enjoyed it. We choose to have everything white and ivory, with a mirror theme. We bought large

mirrors for the table plans, hired mirror table tops and bought lots of mirror boxes for the flowers. Our favours for the girls were earrings presented in beautiful mirrored trinket keepsake boxes with white bowed ribbons and the men had Penderyn liqueur. Our guest book table was an ivory Louis dressing table with fresh flowers and a cream vinyl record player playing some old classics. Our table names were different places in New York on glass plaques. We had fresh strawberries dipped in chocolate for our arrival, along with a beautiful cake cart

by Zoe of Vale Cakes. One of my bridesmaids, Rosie, also made some fantastic Welsh cakes. Our flowers were amazing and the way Hilary’s Floral Design dressed the room was breathtaking. I walked down the aisle to James Williams singing The Prayer in Italian. He then hosted the speeches and sang through the wedding breakfast. He was simply wonderful. I found our photographer, Justin Harris, at a wedding fayre. He is so easy going and I fell in love with his passion for dance photography. Greg was nervous about having a photographer (he

doesn’t like having pictures taken of himself) but Justin made him feel relaxed and took such amazing natural shots. We couldn’t have chosen a better photographer for our wedding day. He even managed to capture my passion for ballet. How did you spend your honeymoon? We went to Dubai for the first five nights before flying to the Maldives, where we had a beautiful sea hut. It was so relaxing. Last Christmas, we also flew back to New York as husband and wife for our engagement anniversary and, of course, we visited the Rockefeller tree. swansealife.co.uk 51

FOOD & DRINK

The Greyhound Bar & Grill The Greyhound is one of Gower’s best known and best-loved pubs. Swansea Life’s Paul Turner went along to find out just what all the fuss is about.

Take the South Gower road and you pass all the familiar places. Three Cliffs, Oxwich, Port Eynon, Rhossili, they line up one after the other. It’s the most popular route with visitors to the country’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for that reason. But why follow the crowd? Why not take the northern road? What’s there might surprise you. There are beaches there too - the Llangennith end of Rhossili Bay for a start and, just around the corner - Whiteford sands, a stunning expanse of golden beach lined with important breeding grounds for birds, and beautiful walks through a pine plantation. There are some gorgeous villages here too, among them, Llanrhidian and nearby Oldwalls. That’s where you will find the Greyhound Bar and Grill. There are many pubs on Gower. But the Greyhound is one you will hear spoken of a lot, and for good reason. Situated on the B4295, just past Llanrhidian, the pub is already a welcome sight for the traveller as you pull into the large car park. A family pub where pets are also welcome, the Greyhound has plenty of space to welcome the hungry and the thirsty, including a large outdoor seating area for sunny days.

with sprigs of rosemary, a red onion chutney and chunks of ciabatta bread, with a salad, it was perfection. The camembert was baked to a fondue consistency. Breaking through the crust with your ciabatta, you dived in to a pool of gorgeous creamy cheese with the chutney to add some mouthwatering sweetness to the lush savoury. Alternatively we could have tried dishes such as cheese and chive topped potato skins, garlic mushrooms or sticky BBQ chicken wings. For mains, we both fancied a pub classic, although with a twist on the part of my wife. While I ordered the Beer Battered Fish of the Day, she chose the Beer Battered Halloumi. Wow! The batter was literally melt in the mouth gorgeous, the fish straight out of the sea, and the chips just how we like them - soft in the middle with a crisp outer. Other temptations on the menu included six different types of burgers, fajitas, steaks, lamb chops, and chicken breast, along with chargrilled swordfish steak, cajun salmon fillet and whole trout. Every possible taste is catered for at the Greyhound - no-one will leave disappointed, especially when they see the dessert menu! It includes favourites such as hot chocolate fudge cake, sticky toffee pudding and cheese cake.

The restaurant has a beamed ceiling and a very cosy feel, helped especially by the warming open fire.

If you can’t make your mind up, I can certainly vouch for the hot chocolate fudge cake, with all that yummy gooey sauce!

Once settled, and having admired the bar’s impressive menu of different gins, we chose the baked camembert to share for starter. Served

We left the Greyhound replenished and warmed by the fire on a chilly winter evening. When can we go back?!

HAPPY 6-MONTH BIRTHDAY TO GOWER GIN T started with a gin blending course a few years ago when Andrew and Siân Brooks, over a G&T, hatched a plan to create a gin that captured the essence of the place they love; and Andrew’s interest in botany had meant that they had often stopped to breath in the aroma of wild fennel on their Gower coastal walks. Siân had been researching the perfect G&T for her gin blog and wanted a product that reflected her love of languages and so from the striped bottle design inspired by a Breton jumper to a passion for supporting the Welsh language GŴYR and the Gower Gin Company were born.

I

It’s hard to believe that GŴYR - Gower Gin has only been going for 6 months. Launched in October 2017 – after many taste tests - this delicious new gin has become a firm favourite on Gower, across Wales and the South of England. The distinctive deep-blue and white striped bottle, with embossed copper writing, stands out on the shelf whether in bars, restaurants or in retail establishments. In just these few months you can now taste and buy GŴYR - Gower Gin in over 60 establishments throughout Wales. Gower Gin has been supporting community causes and local charities

ˆ GWYR GOWER GIN

right from the start; supporting the appeal for a new First Responders vehicle on Gower, donating to various charity raffles and sponsoring the Swansea Life Women in Business Awards event. Owners Andrew and Siân Brooks want to increase this support, building on the charitable work Andrew does through the Gower Chilli Festival. For those in the know, Gower Gin is made with 8 specially selected botanicals including the fresh zest of lemon and pink-grapefruit. However, the secret to its distinctive taste comes from foraged bronze and green fennel found on the sand-dunes

of the South Gower coast. Gathered in a sustainable manner, the aromatic fennel fronds are steeped in a pure grain spirit, along with juniper, angelica and other botanicals before being slowly distilled to develop the distinctive aroma. There are three sizes of Gower Gin bottles, the ‘standard’ at 70cl, the ‘midi’ at a cute 20cl and the ‘miniature’ 5cl, perfect

for a taste of Gower. If you are planning a wedding the Gower Gin Company can even personalise the miniatures to be used as wedding favours. The future for the Gower Gin Company certainly looks bright and if you would like to buy Gower Gin check their website for details of local stockists! Iechyd da!

A sparkling new start

It’s all change at The Bluebell Hotel in Neath – and things couldn’t be looking or tasting better, writes Jenny White.

The Bluebell Hotel in Neath has undergone a dramatic transformation, with everything from the food offering to the interior décor refreshed and reimagined. Whether you are looking for a relaxing overnight stay in luxurious surroundings, a memorable meal or a truly exceptional afternoon tea, The Bluebell has the answer. When new owner Aasif Iqbal took over the hotel, he immediately saw its potential to offer something very special. “I felt it was the perfect setting for a fine dining approach, and I’ve made it my mission to achieve an AA Rosette rating,” he says. With that in mind he has recruited food and beverage manager Razvan Chiticaru, previously the River House in Swansea and Sosban in Llanelli, plus excellent local chef Chris Mitchell, formerly of the Dragon Hotel. He has given Chris free rein to create a menu that combines Mediterranean flavours and British fine dining. The hotel’s new restaurant, La Mancha, offers a relaxed but stylish environment in which to enjoy dishes ranging from Spanish meatballs or fillet of seabass with a Catalonia dressing through to top quality steak and chips or duck breast with Port and orange sauce. There’s also a great selection of meat free dishes – maybe

aubergine stuffed with ratatouille with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese or tagliatelle with pesto, cherry tomato and toasted pine nuts. For dessert, you could try homemade cheesecake or homemade vanilla panna cotta with fresh berries and fruits of the forest coulis.

Aasif has also introduced indulgent afternoon teas, with all cakes, scones and sandwiches made in-house. The teas, detailed on a menu complete with tasting notes, are sourced from a specialist importer. They include the world’s most expensive tea – Da Hong Pa, from China – but the prices are very reasonable, making a top-class London hotelstyle afternoon tea into an easily accessible treat.

Bluebell Hotel

The hotel’s 23 bedrooms and restaurant have undergone extensive refurbishment, and are now a fine example of what can be achieved by Aasif’s hotel management company, Axel Hospitality, which is in the process of seeking new hotels to run internationally. Further proof of the company’s success comes from the hotel’s excellent online reviews. It is Tripadvisor’s top rated hotel in Neath, with reviewers praising everything from the smart rooms and comfy beds through to the food and service. “Delicious food, nice atmosphere,” writes one reviewer, while another says: “Lunch in the restaurant was excellent and well-priced.” “We’ve been delighted with the feedback we’ve received so far,” says Aasif. “It’s a very special hotel in an excellent location and I’m proud to be able to offer a luxury, boutique experience in Neath.”

U

Uplands is having a bit of a moment restaurant wise, isn’t it? They seem to be springing up here at a rate of knots. But, and here’s an admission, most have largely passed me by. I used to live in The Uplands back in the day when Mr D’s was just about the only place to go on a Saturday night, Yes, really!

But hey, time moves on and things have changed just a tad. These days, you can hardly queeze a cigarette paper between the avalanche of eateries that have set up shop here. It’s a postcode which is chock-full of choice, One of the newest arrivals to this foodie mecca is The Optimist bar and kitchen. Different, a little quirky? Yes and Yes! Great food and drink? Yes to that too! We pull up on a cold February evening for a catch up with friends to find a cosy kind-of-a-place. Slightly crowded, convivial with lots of wood, mood lighting and industrial-chic fittings. The brains behind the operation is the Oldwalls Group. Here though, , they’ve come up with something very different to their other offerings. It’s an all-day, seven-day-a-week operation serving up everything from a breakfast brioche, to crispy squid and slider burgers or brunch. After 5, try the likes of feta and spinach parcels, mini fish and chips, belly pork brochette, halloumi fries or slider burgers. We began with an orgy of jiggery-pokery with our table of four launching into a first round of cockle popcorn, halloumi fries with a cucumber and mint rata and pomegranate seeds and some artisan breads all at the £4 mark. We tried to be polite, but soon abandoned all restraint and shared trying everything in sight. Then, one of their aptly named and very pretty ‘ bowls’, recommended to me by a pal on the strength of a visit just a few days before.

Food makers here have taken inspiration from the poke bowls of Hawaii and devised four signature flavour combinations. At £8-a-pop, a surprisingly delicious harmony they are too. For me, the americano: spiced shredded chicken with boston beans, avacodo succatash, sweet potato and pickle. Across the table, the nordic: cured salmon, beetroot, poached egg and a dill creme fraiche, all of it, again, sitting on a generous serving of tricolore quinoa. Its these, I would argue, which are the hard hitters of the menu; a beautiful, satisfying mix of unctuous flavour combos we both instantly fell in love with. It’s the sort of dish you crave at home but can never ever get as good as this. Slippery, tasty and oh-so comforting with shards of flavourful meat and rich juices marrying into one very moreish dish. We ordered our dinner in staggered sections, which I’d advise as the kitchen works quickly and we had nowhere particular to be. Only a madman would have eaten anything else after this feast. But, as a connoisseur of pancakes, I ploughed through some made with sweet potato and served up with bacon, peanut butter and banana. Ho-hum, I thought, how boring this will be – but the dish was stunning, They were the best I have ever tasted. ...really! Waiting staff were prompt, informed and smiley. Given the handsome solicitous service and notable value for original food, we gave the place a big 10/10. Don’t head here expecting your everyday burger and chips or a gammon steak with fried egg on top. It’s not what this place is about. Instead, think fresh and lively, think vegan, veggie or meat and, I’d strongly suggest, one of The Optimist’s poke bowl offerings. “It’s the next generation of sushi,” said one of our happy group as we left, “ only it’s easier to eat.” Push the door of this place open. Surrender. Enjoy. You absolutely will!

bananabenefits Whether eaten raw or mixed into a healthy smoothie, these potent fruits should be your go-to healthy snack, says Liz Connor

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor at bay, but whoever coined this pithy phrase had clearly never encountered a banana. They’re one of the most widely consumed fruits – more than 100 billion bananas are eaten every year worldwide – yet few of us know about the incredible health benefits that are loaded in each bunch. Packed with antioxidants and disease-fighting vitamins, they are Mother Nature’s greatest snack foods and since they come packed in their own wrapper, they’re easy to grab on-the-go. The best thing about these tubular fruits? They’re available to buy all year round, and they make a great pick-me-up during the winter months when many berries and fruits are out of season.

Here, we’ve found a handful of amazing health benefits of the humble fruit...

They can help with digestion Struggling with a bloated belly and stomach pains after a hearty meal? Studies have shown that bananas can help. Their high-fibre content helps to promote a harmonious gut function, easing the symptoms of bowel conditions like IBS. In Ayurveda, the balance between sweet and sour tastes in the fleshy fruit is said to bring about a sense of heaviness, while also stimulating the important flow of agni – or the digestive juices. They’re also a brilliant hangover cure, as they help to restore normal bowel function after a night of sugary, alcoholic drinks, as well as important electrolytes and potassium.

They’re an instant energy boost Forget sugary sports drinks and caffeine-filled coffees: bananas are secretly the healthiest way to get an energy hit first thing on a gloomy Monday morning. That’s because they contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose – giving you a fat and cholesterol-free source of fuel. Whizz them up in a shake for a morning treat or pack one in your sports bag for a delicious postworkout pick-me-up.

They keep your heart healthy Peel away your banana and you’ll find that the starchy flesh inside is loaded with potassium – an important mineral that is essential for heart health. A potassium-rich diet can help lower blood pressure, and studies have shown that people who load up on the mineral have up to a 27% lower risk of heart disease. Amazingly, the average banana contains a whopping 425 mgs of potassium, about 11% of the recommended dietary allowance.

They’re good for your eyes The good news for short-sighted fans of the yellow fruit? Bananas, like carrots and pumpkins, are packed with antioxidant compounds and carotenoids, as well as a potent mix of minerals that can have seriously positive effects on the health of your eyes. Macular degeneration, cataracts, night blindness and glaucoma have all been shown to decrease by regularly eating bananas.

They can help with weight loss Planning to shed a few pounds before summer? You may very well want to stock up on a few bunches of bananas. This weight-loss friendly food contains very few calories (about 100 per banana), yet they’re super filling and very nutritious. Bunches that are on the unripened end of the spectrum are filled with resistant starch, which has been shown to have appetite-reducing effects and increase the feeling of fullness after meals.

SOMETHINGFISHY If you’ve ever fancied presenting a slab of fish with a puree, to rival those smooth concoctions served in Michelin-starred restaurants, here’s your chance. Three cod recipes to try by celebrity chef Michel Roux Jr

STEWED SKREI WITH CANNELLINI BEANS AND CHORIZO This is ultimate bowl food. For a hearty but light supper, Michel Roux Jnr has come up with stewed skrei cod on a bed of well seasoned cannellini beans. There’s the punch of chorizo and the greenness of cavolo nero involved to boot.

(Serves 3) Ingredients:

■■

■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■

3 Norwegian skrei fillets (deboned and skinned) - or any cod available 175g cooking chorizo 2 small white onions, sliced 2 garlic cloves, sliced 70g cavolo nero, roughly chopped 125g cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 sprig thyme 200ml fish stock For the cannellini beans (best prepared the day before): 240g dried cannellini beans 1 carrot, peeled 1/2 shallot 1tsp sea salt Salt and pepper

Method:

1. Soak the beans in cold water for at least five hours. Once doubled in size, drain and rinse. Place in a large pan with the carrot and shallot, season and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil, scoop off any foam and reduce heat to a gentle simmer. Cover pan and cook for approximately one hour, adding more water if it gets too low. Once tender, strain and discard the cooked carrot and shallot. 2. Slice the chorizo into bitesize morsels. Sear in a frying pan over med-high heat for three minutes on each side (no fat needed). Remove the chorizo from pan and set aside on kitchen paper. Use the fat left in pan to sear the onions, garlic and cavolo nero. Cook for about four minutes until tender. Then add the tomatoes and cook for a further five minutes until softened. Finally, add the cooked beans, chorizo, thyme and stock together with the Skrei. Reduce heat to a gentle simmer and cook for approximately eight minutes. 3. Season to taste and discard the sprig of thyme before serving. Plate simply with the skrei placed over a good bed of the stew.

Recipes from Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr, courtesy of the Norwegian Seafood Council. Skrei is available during the January-April season from Harrods, Selfridges, Booths, Whole Foods Market, quality fishmongers and top restaurants (season timings according to the migratory progress of the Skrei).

POACHED SKREI COD WITH CAULIFLOWER PUREE AND PICKLED RADISHES A delicate poached fish supper. This elegant fish dish from Michel Roux Jnr uses Norwegian skrei cod fillets, which are poached and then paired with earthy cauliflower. You can make the curry oil and pickled radishes a day ahead, if needs be.

(Serves 4) Ingredients: ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■

4 Norwegian skrei fillets (deboned and skinned) or any available cod fillets 1ltr milk 1tbsp salt For the curry infused oil: 100ml rapeseed oil 1tsp curry powder For the pickled radishes (fills a 1/2 litre jar): 1 bunch radishes Pinch of mustard seeds 2 crushed black peppercorns 200ml water 200ml white wine vinegar 2tsp fine salt

■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■

3tbsp honey For the roasted cauliflower: 150g large cauliflower florets Drizzle of olive oil Pinch of chilli powder For the cauliflower puree: Drizzle of olive oil 400g cauliflower florets 1tbsp curry powder 1tbsp chopped garlic 300ml milk 1tbsp salted butter 1tbsp extra thick double cream Zest of half a lemon Coriander cress for dressing Salt and pepper

■■ ■■ ■■

Method:

baking tray and roast for 25-30 minutes until charred.

2. To make the pickled radishes, rinse and trim the radishes. Slice finely or for extra crunch, quarter. Place in a half-litre jar with the mustard seeds and peppercorns.

4. For the puree, put the olive oil in a pan over a medium heat. Sweat the cauliflower for two minutes. Add the curry powder and garlic and sear for a further two minutes. Add the milk and simmer for 10 minutes until tender and three-quarters of the liquid has evaporated. Transfer to a blender and puree with the butter and cream. Once silky smooth, season with salt, pepper and lemon zest.

1. For the curry infused oil, place the oil in a saucepan and gently heat to 60°C. Stir in the curry powder and cover the pan with cling film. Set aside to infuse for two hours.

3. Bring the water, vinegar, salt and honey to the boil in a pan. Once at a rolling boil, pour into the jar of radishes. Cool to room temperature before using. 3. Preheat oven to 200°C. Place the cauliflower florets in a bowl. Combine with the oil, chilli powder and a pinch of salt. Spread onto a

5. For the fish, pour the milk into a pan and season with salt. Place over a gentle heat. Once simmering, delicately add the skrei and cook for six to eight minutes. Remove the fish from the milk and serve immediately with the puree and cauliflower. Garnish with pickled radishes and herbs.

MISO-GLAZED SKREI COD WITH CARROT AND GINGER PUREE AND CRISPY KALE This fish dish will certainly impress your dinner guests. Michel Roux Jnr’s skrei cod with Asian flavourings is just the ticket to impress family and friends, and it’s actually quite simple to make...

(Serves 6) Ingredients: ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■

6 thick Norwegian skrei cod fillets (deboned & skinned) or any available cod 1tbsp rapeseed oil For the glaze: 3tbsp mirin 1tbsp light soy sauce 3tbsp sake 50g brown caster sugar 150g white miso paste 1tsp sesame oil For the puree: 1tbsp butter 6 carrots, roughly chopped 1tbsp freshly grated ginger 400ml vegetable stock (or water) For the crispy kale: 175g kale, roughly chopped Drizzle of oil Salt and pepper For the fried chickpeas: 1 x 400g can chickpeas Drizzle of rapeseed oil 1tsp fine salt 1tsp paprika

Method: 1. Place the mirin, soy sauce, sake and sugar in a small saucepan. Heat gently and mix until all the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and whisk in the miso paste together with sesame oil until combined. Leave to cool to room temperature. Coat the cod with the marinade, cover with cling film and infuse overnight. 2. The next day, melt the butter in a pan over a medium heat. Add the carrots and ginger and cook for three to four minutes. Pour in the stock, reduce the heat and simmer for a further eight to 10 minutes. Once the carrots are cooked and the liquid has reduced by two-thirds, transfer the veggies and cooking liquor to a blender and puree. Once silky smooth, season to taste. 3. Season the kale with oil, salt and pepper, coating all the leaves. Spread onto a baking tray and roast for eight minutes at 160°C until crisp. Leave to cool. 4. Heat the oven to 200°C. Drain the chickpeas and rinse. Transfer to a kitchen towel and pat dry. Spread out onto a baking tray, season with a drizzle of oil, salt and paprika and roast for 25 minutes until crisp. 5. Ten minutes prior to the chickpeas being cooked, turn your attention to the Skrei. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan over a high heat. Sear the skrei for two minutes on each side, caramelising its exterior. Transfer to a baking tray and place in the oven for eight to 10 minutes until golden brown. 6. Serve on a drizzle of puree, delicately sprinkle the chickpeas and garnish with the crispy kale. swansealife.co.uk 69

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE

PERFECT HOME IN WHICH TO ENJOY VILLAGE LIFE A 19th century home in Gower has been given a complementary modern touch to give it the best of both worlds, as CHRIS PEREGRINE reports. chris.peregrine@walesonline.co.uk

V

Gower does throw up these stories from its nautical past, and there is a permanent reminder of one nestling in Overton.

A cloak of dense fog on the evening of January 13, 1888, did for Hull cargo ship Milan. It ran aground on the rocks of Slade’s Foot and a rescue operation successfully got the crew to safety. The cargo was removed and the vessel towed away. All the Milan left behind was her name and it was adopted by the local lifeboat secretary as a fitting tribute to the new house which he was building. That was then. And today it is a six bedroom home, full of character and also supplemented by an adjoining two bedroom cottage, which could continue that use or even be used as a business base. Owners Ken and Marie Jones just love its original features, like the fire places, open beams and sash windows, which have been renovated. 76 swansealife.co.uk

“We met well over 25 years ago and were living in terraced houses in Swansea at the time,” says Ken. “We have been here now for 21 years and absolutely love the village life. The reason we are selling is that we want to downsize, but we are hoping to be able to buy another property here. “There is so much going on in the village that we are a part of. Marie has been in the art group for 20 years and I have been there for two years. I am part of the ukulele group and we are both in the theatrical group.” But the couple also enjoy home comforts and have done their bit to update the property, marrying the old and the new. The reception/dining room has a slate slab floor and a feature hearth with a wood burner. There is a similar floor in the kitchen and the base units have a granite work surface. Other features include a porcelain sink and drainer unit with mixer tap and a range cooker. There is space for a fridge/freezer, washing machine and dishwasher.

Having a breakfast room always sounds good and this one has a feature hearth with open fire. There is more of the same in the living room, which also has a picture rail. Three of the main bedrooms are on the first floor, all of them having a radiator, while one has a recurring theme of the house, a feature hearth with open fire. Fitted wardrobes can be found in the dressing room, while the floor also houses a single bedroom, which could also be used as a study. Both bedrooms on the second floor have a radiator, and a bathroom on that level has a shower cubicle, a wash hand basin, a toilet and a radiator. The bedrooms keep on coming, though, with two in the attached cottage, both with a double glazed window and a radiator. There are two of them in the reception room, which has a beamed ceiling and a feature stone hearth with wood burner. “We have a couple of favourite rooms and one of them is the living room in the cottage,” says Ken. “It is very cosy there. It is heated 24 hours a day. We relax there in the winter, so we don’t have to heat all of the house. I never let the coal go down.”

The kitchen has wall and base units with worktop over, a single bowl stainless steel sink and drainer with mixer tap, an integral cooker and space for a washing machine and fridge/freezer. There is a cloakroom and another toilet, while there is also a walk-in shower room. The garage has a workshop and coal store, with the lawned garden, taking in three sides of the property and enclosed by stone walls with mature shrubs, planting and mature trees. There is enough space to park at least four cars. “We have continually upgraded it, kept it updated,” adds Ken. “But we have also got the original features like the beams.”

MARCH OF TIME Spring is here, and for interior designer lesley taylor, diy season has officially arrived

March is one of my favourite months. It’s a perfect opportunity to revamp our two Taylors Etc showrooms with beautiful spring/summer trend pieces. What’s more, this year the month is bookended by two fabulous events; St David’s Day and the start of DIY season (or Easter as it’s more commonly known). For years keen DIYers have heralded the four-day break as the end of tool hibernation and the start of ‘Big Job’ season. For me, however, Easter should be about the medium jobs – the ones that make a real impact but still leave you with some time to enjoy the four-day break with your loved ones. Maybe start by sorting out your garden. Should the weather be in your favour, Easter is a brilliant weekend to get stuck in to your outside space. Get all the basics out of the way: mowing the lawn, power washing the patio and de-weeding your flower beds. This leaves you with a fantastic blank canvas to start planning what exactly it is you want out of your outside area during the summer months, as well as plenty of time to achieve it. One of the big outdoor trends of 2018 is going to be continuous flooring, that is flooring that leads from your home’s living area to its outside space.

continuous illusion. Tiles are perfect for this task and there are plenty on the market which are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Porcelain tiles are more durable and unlike ceramic, won’t absorb water – which means they are less likely to crack in cold temperatures. Plus, they are pretty easy to clean too so they will stay sparkling all year round. Indoors, a trend that is going to be everywhere in the coming seasons, is statement ceilings. In years gone by, ceilings were mostly painted white to give the impression they are loftier than they actually are; however, more recently we have seen more experimentation with ceilings painted in the same shade as the walls for continuous colour. This year we are going to see more and more ceiling art, from statement lighting fixtures to ornate, textured tiles covering the entire surface. One of the easiest ways to create a striking ceiling is by using a bold wallpaper. Opt for chunky stripes or on-trend florals. Hanging patterned wallpaper always takes longer than plain paper, but be prepared for this task to take some considerable time – after all, lining up patterned paper above your head is no mean feat.

It’s all thanks to the rise of bi-fold doors and open plan living spaces. Keen to make use of every inch of the home, people are integrating their living areas and expanding more and more into the garden.

For a quick fix, ceiling medallions are a popular choice. Once considered a thing of the past, these medallions are fast making a comeback. They will instantly glam up any light fixture – just make sure you choose a design that complements existing fixtures, otherwise it will turn in to a mammoth task.

The key to this seamless integration is flooring that creates a

it is still hip to be square These classic tiles can add a stylish twist to any space, as these diverse schemes show, says Amanda Pollard

Showcase other objects

Square tiles work in much the same way as metro tiles, in that they can be a great neutral backdrop for other elements. For instance, if you’d like a patterned floor and vintage furniture to take centre stage, as in this bathroom, consider using some low-key squares on the walls. A simple design like this is subtle and timeless, and will allow you to showcase more elaborate pieces. Picture: Stephen Karlisch, photographer

quare tiles are appearing on many a well-designed wall at the moment, and their sheer simplicity makes them a trend worth sticking with. Their even shape means it’s easy to be creative with them, and they work well with a number of different interior styles. Take a look at these rooms for inspiration.

Why not give your square tiles star billing? These beautiful grey numbers are a key element in this calm, tranquil bathroom. Their mottled texture reflects the light and gives them a soft look that adds to the cosy feel of the room. Picture: The Winchester Tile Company

Provide some shimmer

Here’s another show-stopping look – a wall of glossy tiles in a deep emerald tone takes this plain kitchen up a level. The tiles here are made from a rich-hued terracotta and have a shiny pitted glaze that plays with the light beautifully. Picture: Clé tile

Contrast the grout

A plain square white tile might not seem like the most adventurous choice for your walls, but in fact its simplicity allows you to be quite creative. Experiment with colour, grout and layout to design different looks to suit your style. Here, the brickwork pattern has been enhanced by dark grey grout to make the tiles stand out. The bold design works well here, as it contrasts with the soft grain in the wooden worktop and shelf.

Be bold with colour

Picture: Sustainable Kitchens

You don’t have to stick to white, of course – a simple square tile can look stunning in a vivid colour. The green units and shelves in this kitchen have been finished off with a panel of tiles in a similar shade. It’s a brave choice, but it’s paid off and resulted in an original kitchen with bags of personality. Picture: deVOL Kitchens

Home grown Cut Flowers Cut flowers are so much fun to grow, and much easier than you may think! From dahlias to daisies, sweet peas to sunflowers. In even a small space you could be picking bucket loads of fresh blooms all summer long. Here are five beautiful and easy to grow cut flowers that will be happy in any sunny Swansea garden.

Cosmos Cosmos are my absolute favourite cut flower, from the crazy bright pinks, vibrant oranges or delicate pastel pinks and white, there is one for every garden. Taller varieties will need staking, but they are well worth the little bit of effort that is required to grow them. They are extremely prolific flowerers, and the more you pick, the more you will get, so you can fill your vases from June right through to November! Bees and hoverflies love them too- a must have for any garden in my opinion.

Sunflowers

Nigella

Great fun to grow with kids, and great for wildlife too. The bees will enjoy the nectar, the birds will enjoy the seeds and you can enjoy picking the gorgeous blooms, which look spectacular when arranged in a tall vase. Why not have a family competition to see who can grow the tallest sunflower!

Also known as ‘love-in-a-mist’, these frothy flowers are perfect for arranging a pretty posy in a jam jar or small vase. They will self-seed prolifically, so don’t be surprised if they pop up year after year. They come in many gorgeous shades of blues, pinks, purples and whites, and are great for filling a gap in a border. They only flower for about 8 weeks, but the dried seed pods are beautiful too, both left in the garden and in a flower arrangement.

Sweet peas There are few things lovelier than picking a posy of sweet peas on a summer’s day, the scent of even a few blooms will fill your house! You can grow them easily from seed (choose the highly scented varieties) or you can buy plug plants in the spring. Give them something to climb up in a sunny spot and as long as you keep picking the flowers and removing any seed pods, they will reward you with beautiful blooms for several months.

108 swansealife.co.uk

Dahlias

Available in a huge variety of colours and styles- there will be a Dahlia to suit every garden! Plant tubers after the frosts have passed. They provide a cheerful display of blooms from late summer, right through to the start of winter. They are seriously hard working cut flowers that will give you a gorgeous display in the garden as well as keeping you in cut flowers for months on end.

Early Spring Essentials With Joseph Atkin, Head Gardener at Aberglasney Gardens in Carmarthenshire

Hydrangea aspera

For a gardener, spring is possibly the most eagerly anticipated season as it heralds all the good things to come. With some careful choice even in early spring, which is essentially March, you can put together a magnificent display. From experience, at Aberglasney, we know there is a much bigger selection of plants to choose from than you may expect. There are early flowering Magnolia which are unbelievably eye catching, Pasque flowers with a statuesque elegance, while favourites like Pulmonaria and Narcissus are both beautiful and practical. Conveniently they will all work well together to give a very sophisticate start to spring.

Magnolia ‘Wakehurst’

Narcissus W.P. Milner and Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’

Early flowering Magnolia have a very mixed reputation. This is mainly down to peoples experience of them being frost damaged. At Aberglasney we are certainly no stranger to frost and do suffer the odd disappointment, generally though we get some good displays. There are some sensible choices but for a real spring treat ‘Wakehurst’ is hard to beat. It forms a large tree with the most unbelievably rich dark pink flowers. These stand out in all weather due to the intensity of their colour and are a real favourite with our visitors. A change in propagation methods also means younger plants will now flower which is a massive bonus. ■  Height = 10m ■  Spread = 5m ■  Position/Aspect = Any sheltered ■  Soil = Any fertile ■  Pest and diseases = No real problems ■  Style = Specimen tree, border centre piece, back of border or street tree

Sometimes you cannot think about one plant without the other and the combination of Narcissus and Pulmonaria is one of the best at Aberglasney. Narcissus ‘W.P. Milner’ and Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’ are particular favourites, but you will find it hard to combine any varieties from these two groups of plants without a wonderful result. This Pulmonaria has vivid blue flowers and the Narcissus is a pale yellow with a slightly weeping form. They are both long standing stalwarts in the garden, but you just can’t beat them for elegance and colour quality. From a more pragmatic view this combination also gives a long season of interest with the Pulmonaria foliage making it an excellent choice for any situation. This combination planted in a little drift is most effective. ■  Height = 30cm ■  Spread = 30cm ■  Position/Aspect = Any except deep shade ■  Soil = any except waterlogged ■  Pest and diseases = No problems in the ground ■  Style = Cottage, herbaceous, woodland edge mixed border

Pulsatilla vulgaris These wonderful alpine plants are vastly under represented in gardens. They are easy and long lived and are a wonderful accompaniment to small bulbs. They flower for a good few weeks and have a wonderfully delicate foliage. They look best planted in mini drifts of five or seven with bulbs between them. They die down over the summer leaving room for other plants that flower later in the season which makes them ideal for succession planting and a long season of interest. ■  Height = 30cm ■  Spread = 30cm ■  Position/Aspect = Sunny ■  Soil = Any free draining ■  Pest and diseases = No problems in the ground ■  Style = Alpine, rock garden, planter, small border or Mediterranean

SOFTWASH CLEANING SERVICES IN SWANSEA Soft Washing is a safe and effective way to clean exterior surfaces like K-rend, render, buildings, block paved driveways, decking, tarmac, fences, patios, roof… in fact any external surface. Due to its amazing results Soft Wash is becoming the UK’s fastest growing cleaning sector, as well as cleaning surfaces like roof slates and roofing tiles back as if they were new, it also protects BEFORE

Call us today for a free no obligation quote, don’t delay, if your roof is covered in moss, then this is the worst time of year for breakages as the wet moss freezes, expanding and cracking your roof tiles and concrete. FASCIAS & GUTTERING Some people don’t realise how important it is to keep their plastic (fascias and gutters) clean. The dirtier it gets and the longer it stays dirty, the more likely it is to stain, and stay stained. It is important to clean leaves, moss and general debris out of gutters AFTER because if allowed to accumulate, downpipes become blocked, damaging the gutters and

D.SULLIVAN WINDOW CLEANING SERVICES

downpipes and causing overflow damage to walls. An unfortunate number of gutters are mounted at incorrect angles so silt and debris builds up rather than going down downpipes, which if left can cause untold damage: • Bring the gutters down • Water overflows • Rots nails holding fixings up • Rots wooden fascia boards (most plastic boards over wooden originals) • Rust marks down walls /plastic. These are unsightly and impossible to clean • If cleared out properly you may only need it done every 2or 3 years We will clear out your gutters - more important to clear than clean, to avoid expensive replacing…

SWANSEA BAY WALK Join ANDREW MORGAN as he leads us on a Swansea Bay walk.

Start/Finish location ........ RSPB Cwm Clydach Nature Reserve Distance .................................... 3-3 miles (3 hour) Level ............................................ Moderate Parking ....................................... As above

118 swansealife.co.uk

Cwm Clydach and Mynydd Gelliwastad Swansea Ramblers will once more explore the countryside to the north of the city where we have worked with Swansea Council to open up and improve paths. A leaflet, The Cwm Clydach Walk is available from the council but we’ll just do a three mile section of this today, after first visiting the other side of the valley for another three mile walk onto Mynydd Gelliwastad. So you have the opportunity to do this walk in stages or come with a friendly group of walkers on Saturday 31 March to do both of the two halves of this walk. The first half begins by heading about 400 yards north on the main road, so be aware of traffic. On the left, a footpath sign sends you along a rising track that almost doubles back. Ignore the footpath on the right, we will descend this later. Instead continue straight on to follow the track onto Access Land. Climb steeply at first, passing a house to your right and crossing over a larger track. Continue upwards to a T-junction and ascend left. Pass a mast on your right then ascend straight ahead at a junction. Take the next left and left again at a T-junction. Enjoy the panoramic views from the Trig Point then passing it, bear right to a narrow path which crosses to a wider path. Turn right here to a footpath sign and begin a descent along an enclosed track that drops down to Rhyddwen Place. Turn right onto Golwg y Mynydd and straight across the junction to a path that brings you back down to the main road. Turn right downhill back to the start, watching for traffic. The second part of this walk crosses the road bridge and immediately turns left where a blue sign says ‘unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles’. This narrow road curves left and uphill to a kissing gate on the right. This is part of the trail on the Cwm Clydach leaflet. Ascend the path into fields which may be a bit wet in places. The path is more or less a straight route through five fields but you do need to watch for the path signs. Eventually you come to a junction of paths where you ignore the first left and take the second left above the farm. If you are lucky, the Alpacas may still be in the field. Entering another field, the path turns right below the farm to reach a tarmacadam road. Follow this road Below: Andrew Morgan and not the path on the left. This road bends left to the highway where you then go left to the bridge known as Pont Llechart. A path by the bridge takes you south by the River Clydach for about a mile and a half back to the start. OUT & ABOUT

THE WOOD NORTON

The Wood Norton in Evesham in The Cotswolds is one of the region’s most historic hotels. A hunting lodge turned French royal retreat, it served as a Second World War broadcasting and monitoring centre before becoming a country house hotel. Its wood-panelled interior is remarkable and shouts ‘style’ as you walk. Its grounds and recently re-vamped gardens , the doorstep to beautiful walks. Peter Slee has been off to explore... peter.slee@trinitymirror.com

LOCATION 10 / 10 The hotel is set in the Vale of Evesham, and lies between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty – the Cotswolds and the Malvern Hills. It is surrounded by gorgeous, unspoiled landscape. Through it’s doors, the elegant garden views are terrific too. Picturesque Broadway is 15 minutes’ drive west; Stratford-upon-Avon 25 minutes’ drive north. Evesham station is a six-minute taxi ride away.

STYLE & CHARACTER 9 / 10 In the 1890s the Duc d’Orleans inherited a hunting lodge here and turned it into this elaborate mansion. He was a proud pretender to the French crown and made lavish use of the fleur-de-lis emblem, which still decorates fireplaces and even drainpipes. The exterior is a hotchpotch of styles; the interior is all Arts & Crafts oak panelling. During the Second World War, The Wood Norton became an important monitoring base for the BBC which then turned it into a training and filming centre ‒ most famously for several Seventies Dr Who episodes. Today contemporary furnishings add dashes of colour to the public rooms and the walls are hung with works by local artists that jar just a little with its general style. It has been soothingly restored in recent times

and today exudes cosy-chic appeal. This is a place to sink into once you walk through its huge doors. There are numerous lounges and snugs and several fireplaces; furnishings range from the old to the very new as well as plenty of squishy sofas. This fabulously glamorous property with its extensive grounds, spacious rooms and fabulous views very much feels the part and is all the better for it. The vibe is one of easy-going informality.

SERVICE & FACILITIES 8 / 10 The young staff at this supremely comfy hotel exude enthusiasm. There are lots of personnel, too; on hand to guide you through the labyrinth of sitting rooms and advise on local attractions of which there are plenty. We covered most of the Cotswolds during our weekend here making it an ideal touring base. It rained when we visited, otherwise we would have made moere use of its stunning gardens.

ROOMS 10/10 All 50 of its bedrooms are stylishly comfy, all spruce with big bedheads, acres of wooded panelling and warm colours. Many are up creaky stairs and wonkly floors in the main building which is where we stayed. Additionally there are more rooms in an adjoining block not quite at the same level as the main house itself but even so, still welcoming.

Everywhere you turn there’s something extraordinary to catch your eye. Our choice of room 105 was a good one with a bathroom and roll top bath the size of a tennis court and with stunning views out over ts gardens. Our only quibble, a slightly difficult-to-use lighting system which saw us scramble around in a darkened room for 10 minuites or so until help arrived.

AN OVERNIGHT STAY AT... HOTEL MARITIM , DUSSELDORF

FOOD & DRINK 8 / 10 The main restaurant is a large, handsome room with a brasserie feel. In such a setting you want to be wowed by the food and other than perhaps one rather bland starter - we generally were. The Wood Norton’s talented team of chefs offer up short menus of beautifully devised dishes which are a treat of modern flavour combinations as well as three-tiered afternoon tea and cocktails. Though it was its welcoming team of mostly European waiting staff that really wowed. Breakfast, which includes the likes of a full English or advocado on sough dough bread, could maybe have done with being a little more imaginative.

VALUE FOR MONEY 8 / 10 Double rooms from £109 in low season; and from £159 in high. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi. Expect to pay closer to £180 for one of its more stylsh offerings. For what you get, it is money well spent.

ACCESS FOR GUESTS WITH DISABILITIES? With wide doorways and lifts in both areas of accommodation, there’s exceptionally good access for guests with limited mobility.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY? Children are welcome and several rooms have sofa beds (two in the main house, two in the Pear Tree Mews alongside it). Child beds can also be added in the larger rooms (£20 per night).

Airport hotels can be the most depressing places to stay in the world, with staff who wish they were working at The Ritz, and customers who are only there because they’ve got a dawn flight to Rio. This one’s a notch up, with bright, airy décor, good facilities and friendly, helpful staff ... ■ WHO GOES?

Built in the nineties, this large, luxury, 533-bedroomed hotel attracts both business and leisure travellers including groups. ■ LOCATION • 10/10

A hop, skip and a jump from the main airport terminal, it couldn’t have been any easier. We had actually assumed this was a city centre location when originally booking and it only dawned on us much later where it was. Yes, perfect if you’re flying into or out of Dusseldorf, but actually, not half bad either if you are a visitor to the city. It was a 30 minute underground train ride into the heart of the action at a cost of just a couple of Euros. If ever we were to return, this is absolutely where we would check into again. It makes checking in for your return journey an absolute, hassle-free breeze. ■ STYLE/CHARACTER • 8/10

Contemporary and stylish, but without the designed-to-death fussiness of the sort of trendy boutique hotel which has gone out of fashion between the time it takes you to check in and get to your room. The huge airy lobby reaches up through the first few floors to a domed, glass ceiling with restaurants and bars leading from it. Its stylish rooms are large and spacious and come with big comfortable bed and heavy wooden furniture. ■ SERVICE •10/10

Service was outstanding. Staff at reception and in its restaurants are friendly, efficient and go out of their way to be helpful transforming the place from just another airport hotel. Most staff we spoke to were also pretty fluent in English. Its pool, sauna and steam room will also help you recharge your batteries and get you off to a fresh start. ■ ROOMS • 9/10

Even the standard rooms are big, airy and tasteful, with pale walls, huge windows, simple wooden furniture, nicely understated use of colour in the fabrics and fittings, and large contemporary bathrooms. The suites are big enough to live in permanently. ■ FOOD AND DRINK •10/10

This place boasts six restaurants and bars including a Sushi bar and a bistro. We tried out the traditional food in the very authenticlooking and very good Rheinische Stov with a menu packed with pork and sausage and a good selection of lagers and wine. It was all reasonably priced at under 20 Euros a head including drinks and, above all, was delicious. Despite being in an airport hotel, it felt more like being in a local eaterie somewhere on the banks of the Rhein itself. The sumptuous buffet breakfast in its main restaurant is also a good bet . ■ VALUE FOR MONEY • 9/10

Classic rooms from 99 Euros a night make it a good option. Add to that that free fitness centre, with well-equipped gym , sauna, steam bath and indoor pool and free wi-fi, and it all adds up to a pretty decent deal. *For the best prices, including a 5% saving book directly online at www.maritim.com • E-Mail: info.dus@maritim.de swansealife.co.uk 121

OUT & ABOUT

48 HOURS IN THE LAKE DISTRICT

PAUL TURNER spends a relaxing weekend enjoying the stunning delights of England’s Lake District......

I have always had an affinity with the Lake District, although my first visit as a child was a bit of a disappointment. We were living in Yorkshire, but my parents had London accents and when they said we were going to the Lake District, I thought they said Light District. I had this image in my child’s brain of a land literally dotted with lights, some kind of magical electrical world. Instead, I found mountains, lakes, and pretty little villages. Suffice to say, I soon forgot about the land of light, and embraced the district of lakes in all its glory. Since those childhood visits, I have been back and forth as a teenager and then as an adult, cycling, walking, kayaking, and just soaking up the place. Every corner you turn in the Lakes, you breathe in a different view, another vista begging to be explored. Now, living in Wales, beautiful as it is, opportunities to enjoy my first love are fewer and further between. But the Lakes are actually closer than you think. Five and a half hours in the car, and you are there. It may seem a long time, but you could be amongst beautiful scenery in the same time it takes you to binge watch a handful of episodes of your favourite series on Netflix. So when the opportunity arrived to stay at the Waterhead Boutique Hotel in Ambleside came up, I jumped at the chance. Ambleside was always one of my favourite Lake District towns. At the 122 swansealife.co.uk

top of Lake Windermere, you are close to all the watersports, and you have some of the best known mountains within easy reach, such as Helvellyn, Fairfield and Great Gable. The Waterhead Hotel is perfectly positioned within walking distance of the town centre, but also on the lakeside, with views over the water and of the mountain ranges beyond. There is plenty of parking, and a warm, professional welcome, making you feel that all your needs will be catered for. Our room for our two nights stay was one of the hotel’s upgraded luxury suites, and we were welcomed with complimentary snacks and a welcome gin and tonic, just what the doctor ordered. There was also a Nespresso coffee machine, luxury toiletries, silk bedding, and artworks by internationally renowned artists Sarah Pye and Catherine Stephenson. Space was definitely not a premium here, with a hallway, separate seating area, and plenty of floor space around the bed, enough for lots of furniture including a very comfy sofa at the foot of the giant and inviting mattress. Out the window, we looked straight onto the lake and mountains, although we arrived in the dark, so it was a wonderful surprise when we opened the curtains in the morning and saw what awaited us! Before that, of course, was dinner on the first night of our stay. The Bar and Grill at the Waterhead is the last word in luxury. It invites with

its large, comfy chairs and views of the lake all around. More inviting still is the vast range of gins, a speciality at the Waterhead. Every gin in the world must surely be served there, each accompanied by little aromatic treats to add extra flavour - how could we not partake! The restaurant is more inviting still, the picture of sophistication with its choice of wall and ceiling lighting, and highbacked chairs. In the daytime, you’ll find views from pretty much every table towards a window and the stunning scenery beyond. As for the food, it’s top class. I had whole baked Camembert for starter, a delicious route to my main course which was grilled fillet of seabass served with heritage potatoes, blood orange segments, fennel salad, beetroot gel and sauce vierge. It was a veritable taste sensation, but best of all had to be my dessert. I hadn’t had parkin since I was a child, so when I saw it on the menu, I opted for a bit of nostalgia, to add to my feeling of being in the Lakes. It was sensational! Served with stem ginger butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream, well, I’d return for that alone. The next day we opted for a walk direct from the hotel through Skelghyll Wood over the edge of the fell to the village of Troutbeck where we enjoyed a lovely lunch in the old Post Office, next to a warming open fire. Then it was back via Wansfell Pike, one of the peaks surrounding Ambleside,

with stunning views over the town, Lake Windermere and all the mountains around absolutely awesome! Back in Ambleside, the call of a hot chocolate and a slice of homemade cake was too strong to resist, and Daisy’s Cafe provided both splendidly well in a very pleasant setting. After a very restful second night’s sleep in our super-comfortable bed, it was off to my favourite Lake District town, Keswick. The are some lovely shops to look around, cafes to partake of - try the fantastically huge cakes in the Little Chamonix Cafe - and a wonderful walk alongside the beautiful Derwent Water. We left the Lakes unfulfilled in some respects, there is just so much to see, so much beauty to take in, you wish you had been able to spend longer there. But what we were filled with, was a desire to return...and soon! ■ FOOD: The Waterhead offers an

extensive all day menu featuring meals such as hot and cold sandwiches, burgers, beer-battered haddock and chicken caesar salad. On the dinner menu you will find starters such as Game Terrine of Partridge, Rabbit and Venison and Beetroot Carpaccio, and mains including Corn Fed Chicken Breast and Char-grilled Halloumi. Prices in the evening range from around £6-£9 for a starter and £14-£29 for a main course. Vegan and vegetarian options are available.

■ WHAT ELSE IS ON THE MENU: You can enjoy afternoon tea at the Waterhead, even on the lawns overlooking the lake on a pleasant day. It’s served on a 3 tier stand with homemade fruit scones, a selection of freshly made seasonal cakes, and delicate finger sandwiches. ■ THE SPA: Guests at the Waterhead

get complimentary use of the nearby Low Wood Bay health club, including its pool, sauna and steam room.

■ OTHER SERVICES: If you’re planning a walk, the hotel can provide you with detailed information, and they can also tell you about river cruises. ■ HOW MUCH IS IT TO STAY THERE?: A House Room is available for

from £142 to £256 a night, based on two people sharing and inclusive of full English breakfast. Classic Lake View rooms range in price from £178-£317, and Luxury Lake View Rooms, from £228-£350. There are also special offers, for which you need to visit the website - englishlakes.co.uk - for details, but one advertised at the time of writing was a winter bed and breakfast offer ranging in price from £99-£189 depending on the type of room, and for SundayThursday stays only.

■ ANYTHING ELSE?: There’s free guest

parking and free Wifi.

MOTORING

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross a stellar SUV The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a small crossover that will rival the new Skoda Karoq and the recently facelifted Nissan Qashqai. Chris Russon gets behind the wheel... THE boom in SUVs shows no sign of slowing and the latest to pitch in is Mitsubishi with the new Eclipse Cross.

Automatic versions, which use a CVT transmission, cost from £23,850 and can be had with all-wheel-drive from £25,350.

either powertrain the Eclipse Cross drives well, is lively enough and has plenty of feel through the steering.

It’s a medium-sized crossover that slots into the Mitsubishi range between the ASX and the larger Shogun and Outlander models and it’s out to make a mark.

The automatics have a slight edge in terms of acceleration at 9.3 seconds 0 to 60 for the two-wheel-drive models and 9.8 for the 4x4 while the manual comes in at 10.3 seconds although it has a top end of 127mph compared to 124 for the auto.

It’s also nicely balanced when it comes to handling. If anything, the auto is smoother to drive and has the bonus of an electronic parking brake which not only frees up space in the interior but comes with an auto-hold function that’s very useful in traffic and the added attraction of adaptive cruise control.

Impressively styled and with an upmarket interior, the Eclipse Cross has enough presence to make it a fine alternative to the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, the Kia Sportage and Peugeot’s 3008. Priced from £21,275 the Eclipse Cross is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine boosted to 163bhp and in base form it’s mated to a six speed manual transmission and is front-wheel-drive.

126 swansealife.co.uk

Fuel economy is also marginally better with the manual, rated at 42.8mpg with emissions of 151g/km although the auto is almost as efficient at 42.2mpg (154g/km) and 40.4 to the gallon for the all-wheel-drive with a CO2 figure of 159g/km. In reality, we found little difference with the manual averaging 34 to the gallon and the auto 4x4 31 over similar routes and with

The 4x4s use Mitsubishi’s automatic drive set up which varies power to each wheel given the traction and also offers specific settings for poor conditions with snow and gravel modes available. At the moment, four specifications are on offer with a limited run of 250 First Edition models priced from £26,825 for a manual

and £29,750 for an auto and these come with bright red metallic paint set off with silver and carbon styling at the front and side. When those are gone the range will comprise of three trims, topping out at £24,795 and £27,900 for the auto 4x4 and that places the Eclipse Cross is a very competitive position. Mitsubishi interiors have never been lacking and the Eclipse Cross is kitted out smartly and practically with a seven-inch display screen at the top of the dash which can be operated via a touchpad in the centre console. The car has a five star safety rating and all models come with forward collision avoidance, lane departure warning and a reversing camera. Mid-range models, which cost from £22,575, see some upmarket features as standard including a head up display, dual zone climate control and keyless operation as well as heated front seats, additional soundproofing, parking sensors and smart silver side sill covers. That’s high specification and the extra £2,400 for the top grade car adds a premium sound system, leather trim, LED headlamps and a surround-view camera. There’s also some extra safety kit including rear cross traffic and blind spot alerts. Pound for pound the Eclipse Cross represents very good value for money although if there is a downside there is no factory-fitted sat nav available. That either comes from the likes of a TomTom or Garmin device or from a smartphone – and all versions are compatible with Apple and Android handsets. From a practical perspective the Eclipse Cross is a proper family-sized SUV with a sliding rear seat offering plenty of leg room in the back. Boot space ranges from a minimum of 341 to 448 litres depending on the rear seat position while there are other handy features such as a split shelf glove box to a sliding oddments tray in the centre console. Even the distinctive tailgate design, which incorporates a double rear window separated by a spoiler, does not impinge on vision through the mirror unlike other models which have featured similar designs. Mitsubishi is now part of the Nissan Renault Alliance making it the largest car maker in the world. The Eclipse Cross was signed off before the expansion and is wholly Mitsubishi. Not only does it show what it brings to the party but it also gives the three a commanding presence in the crossover market alongside the Nissan Qashqai and the Renault Kadjar. swansealife.co.uk 127

Awesome dad’ Ed’s cutting edge comedy Funnyman Ed Byrne returns to Swansea this March with his latest stand-up show, Spoiler Alert

E

d Byrne has been a stand-up comedian for more than 20 years.

And as he prepares to launch himself upon the nation with another touring show which stops in Swansea this month, the Irish comic is firmly of a belief that the current breed of parents spoil their kids rotten, whether it’s to do with the everincreasing size of garden trampolines, or his own kids’ demand for elderflower cordial. “My dad wasn’t a bad dad, he was just a 1970s dad,” says Ed. “I’ve already done more parenting then he did in my entire life. “Of course, I made a conscious decision that I was going to be an awesome dad. My wife will come back with tales from her friends of how awful their husbands are and she’ll see me smiling and say ‘all right, stop congratulating yourself just because such and such can’t be left alone with their children for two minutes’.” The success of Ed’s early shows, such as the Roaring Forties, Different Class and the 1998 Perrier-nominated A Night At The Opera, led to him appearing on the box in the longrunning panel show Mock The Week. His love of hillwalking resulted in him writing a regular column for The Great Outdoors magazine, and his love of natural history crossed into television with appearances on The One Show, where he abseiled in Snowdonia, as well as Countryfile and presenting items on BBC’s Volcano Live. In his new touring show Spoiler Alert, the funnyman compares and contrasts the old-school child-rearing days with 21st Century methods and suggests that there are different ways to learn how to be a mum or dad.

134 swansealife.co.uk

“I grew up in what I would call an aspirational household in that my parents bettered themselves over the course of my childhood,” he says. “My mother was a radiographer and ended up a lecturer in radiography, while my dad was a sheet metal worker and went up to a supervisory role. I’d still say that you are expected to do a lot more parenting than our parents did, and that’s a weird thing because you tend to think that your parents are where you learned parenting from. But you don’t, really, it’s more that you look around you to see what’s going on with other parents.” For the show Ed extends his analysis on the culture of entitlement to look at areas where we could perhaps do with being spoiled a little bit more. “Where I think we’re not acting spoiled enough is in the political arena. We have a tendency to accept what’s happening and that’s where we should be acting more entitled: we are literally entitled to the Government we want. We’re spoiled in all these little ways, but not spoiled enough.” As well as stories about his two young sons, Ed weaves in routines about running out of petrol in the most awkward place imaginable, helping rescue an injured man in the Cairngorms, and the nationdividing campaign and result of the EU referendum. His way of tackling Brexit is to draw an analogy with the time his son was determined to touch an electric

“I was telling the story of the electric fence for a while, and then suddenly it struck me that it was Brexit in microcosm. I don’t want to alienate half of the population or maybe a third of my audience, but it works as an analogy whichever side you’re on. The government told you not to do this and that it would be a terrible idea, but you said ‘no, we want to do it anyway’. So now we’re doing it and it’s proving a terrible idea. “I do think it’s a fair analogy, but no doubt for some it will come across as me being a typical liberal elite remoaner.” Spoiler Alert also continues a theme that he’s tackled in previous shows, that of his gradual shift from being a working-class Dubliner to a fully paid-up rural-residing member of the middle classes. Where once he would do routines slating 4x4 owners, he is now the proud(ish) owner of such a vehicle. And in the poster for his tour, he brandishes other signifiers of social mobility: a bowtie and chainsaw. “It’s one of two I own: that one is the smaller of the two,” Ed remarks of his chainsaw rather than his neckwear. “I use it for firewood, both for my wood-burning stove and also for the barbecue. The first time I used one I was fine, though I think it worried my parents that I had bought a chainsaw.” Having premiered Spoiler Alert at the Edinburgh Fringe before honing the show, it is now fully ready to go. “Being on stage is enjoyable and this part of the writing process is enjoyable. The empty page though is a scary thing. On the first leg of the tour l’ll do about an hour and 15 minutes, plus I’ll have a support act. I keep a tour diary now of places where the curries are disappointing and where they are good and where audiences have been good before.”

Big Screen Theatre brings live screenings of the world’s best stage performances to your local theatre. JENNY WHITE discovered what’s in store at the Gwyn Hall in Neath. The Gwyn Hall’s thrilling Event Cinema programme enables you to experience live and recorded productions from the National Theatre and The Royal Opera House, and music from stadiums around the world, in thrilling detail on the big screen. Projected into a real theatre, the sharper-than-sharp digital picture and breath-taking Dolby surround sound make this an immersive and unforgettable, larger-than-life experience.

This is not just cinema – this is the world's greatest stage. It’s a front row seat, complete with the rustling of programmes and thunderous applause on opening night.

instance, the Gwyn Hall encouraged everyone to come dressed as their favourite characters and gave out “goody bags” containing props such as water pistols and rubber gloves.

The Gwyn Hall shows two types of Big Screen Theatre: live showings (which are captured and broadcast as they happen) and encore showings (live broadcasts that have been rerecorded).

The best live theatre – brought to you from around the UK

In the past, they have welcomed such sensational shows as Warhorse and Peter Pan from the National Theatre and ballets and opera from the Royal Opera House. The Gwyn Hall also screened a one-night-only event, ‘David Gilmour Live at Pompeii’ and regularly screens performances by the universally known and respected musician Andre Rieu to sell out audiences. There’s a thrill in knowing that with live-streamed productions, as actor Damien Molony said, "There’ll be standing ovations all over the world, all at the same time."

André Rieu

Audiences are encouraged to be fully immersed in the performances: for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, for

National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre with Helen Mirren. National Theatre Live have since broadcast more than forty productions live, from both the National Theatre and from other theatres in the UK. These broadcasts have been experienced by over 5.5 million people in over 2,000 venues around the world, including over 650 venues in the UK alone. Broadcasts from other UK theatres have included A View from the Bridge from the Young Vic; Macbeth from the Manchester International Festival; and Hangmen and The Audience from London’s West End. The biggest single broadcast to date was Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch at the Barbican, which has been seen by over 550,000 people.

Swansea businessman Eddie Whitney keeps us up to date with his charity work and social diary... elighted to support Maggie’s

D

I have long been a passionate supporter of cancer centre Maggie’s Swansea and I was delighted when I learned that my dear friend Blanche Sainsbury, the former managing director of the Evening Post now executive chair of Bluestone Wales, had agreed to join the charity as its new chair.

I have known Blanche for long enough to understand that her energy and drive would make a big difference to the charity – and the first event she ran since taking the reins proved me correct. I was lucky enough to receive an exclusive invitation to The River House restaurant in SA1 to attend a fundraising effort that was like no other I have ever attended. Rather than overtly make the event about raising money for the charity – although this is very much needed – the event focused on the very personal stories of those who have used the centre. Swans legend Alan Curtis, an ambassador for Maggie’s, spoke from the heart about his cancer scare just a few years back and why he feels a connection with Maggie’s as a result. But it was hearing the very personal stories of three ordinary (or I should I say extraordinary after hearing their stories) individuals that really moved all those who attended. Rachel Loye, Jai Eastwood and Ken Bowden all spoke from the heart about their scares, battles, highs and lows due to being diagnosed with cancer – and how Maggie’s had supported them. Trust me, it worked; it was moving; it showed why Maggie’s is important and why its fundraising matters.

All also praised the very personal work of Sarah Hughes, the centre manager and Lucia Osmond, the centre’s fundraising manager. We also heard from Michelle Collins who has played key roles in EastEnders, and Coronation Street, who also praised the work of Maggie’s in Swansea. At the heart of the evening was Blanche, organising, introducing and generally being inspiring. I know she will do great things for Maggie’s. She described how nervous she was about accepting the position but how after talking to a number of people about the charity and perceptions, she felt she could make a difference. She acknowledged that sometimes the messaging around the charity had been a little confusing but realised that is was easily put right: by focusing not on the amazing building it now has but on the beautiful Maggie’s stories from within that building. She also noted that it is no easy task to keep Maggie’s going. It facilitates more than 13,000 visits a year serving people from South Wales and receives no financial help from the NHS. Every penny has to be raised to provide the resources. Which is why such occasions that raise awareness are so important. She stressed that the purpose of the event was to encourage businesses to have Maggie’s in mind should they think of choosing any charity for local donations, fund raising, becoming a friend of Maggie’s, or even booking a table at an exclusive ball scheduled for the Brangwyn Hall in July. Finally, a word on the River House and owner Andy Richards: well done, the food and service were amazing. We will definitely be going back

ASK S A R A

Sara Plant, Partner and Head of Family Law at Peter Lynn Solicitors talks this month about divorce

Why a DIY Divorce Is Not a Good Idea Q: I’ve heard the divorce forms are now more “user friendly”, so why should I use a solicitor instead of doing the divorce myself? A: Although the court forms have recently changed there are still many pitfalls and easy mistakes that can be made by those inexperienced in completing divorce petitions Q: Such as? A: For example, there are five facts you can rely on to get your divorce. No solicitor would ever advise you to use desertion, unless there were really exceptional circumstances, as it is very difficult to establish, but the number of people using desertion as grounds for the breakdown of the marriage has increased by a third. Q: Why is that a problem?

Q: What is the court fee for a Divorce Petition? A: It is £550, which makes it even more important to complete the Divorce Petition accurately and fully. Q: Will the court then deal with the financial aspects of my divorce, such as who keeps the house? A: No that requires a separate application. What you state in your divorce petition can have an impact in some cases on the financial side of the divorce. Dealing with the finances is substantially more complex and complicated especially where there is property and pensions involved. It is easy to overlook parts of the divorce petition which may not become apparent until later.

A: What most people don’t realise is that after preparing a divorce petition, when it comes to applying for your decree nisi – the interim stage of divorce – you must confirm the facts in your petition in a statement in support of your application. The court requires you to confirm specific evidence and information. If you have used the wrong fact in your divorce petition and cannot provide this evidence it will be rejected by the court.

A: Yes, we have a dedicated and very experienced team of family solicitors based at our SA1 offices, and throughout our offices in Morriston, Mumbles, Walters Road, Pontardawe and Ystrdgynlais, who can answer all your matrimonial queries.

Q: What happens then?

Q: What do I do next?

A: You will need to amend your petition and pay a further court fee. The current fee for any amendment £95

A: CALL US ON 01792 450010 to speak to an experienced solicitor and request a free initial meeting to discuss your options.

Q: So a solicitor can advise me on all of this at the same time?

To arrange a meeting with Sara Plant or one of her team, call 01792 450010 or email advice@plandp.co.uk 158 swansealife.co.uk
