E D I TO R’ S L E T TE R

Welcome... It’s official - summer is here! And as you can probably tell from our super-sunny cover, we are getting very excited here at Swansea Life. It’s almost like that “school’s out for summer” feeling, when as kids we looked forward to the end of term in anticipation of an action-packed holiday ahead, full of fun-filled activities with friends, trips aways and long sunny days and evenings spent down the beach. Apart from the six week summer holiday, I guess not much has changed. Every July, I still get that “school’s out” feeling! Living in Swansea Bay we are fortunate to be able to take advantage of everything the the area has to offer - from picnics in the park, to sunbathing or swimming at Gower’s glorious beaches as well as being spoilt for choice with all the fantastic restaurants and drinking venues the city has to offer. Our Holiday Edition magazine is packed with everything you need to get into the holiday spirit. If you are not lying supine on the beach, or planning your next break, we hope you can find some well-deserved “me time” on a patio chair/lounger and enjoy the warm weather. But don’t forget the SPF! Inside, we feature sunscreens to suit all skin types as well as rounding up the top aftersun lotions, and offering beauty tips - all with sunny weather in mind. We also have a bumper holiday fashion guide, packed with swimwear, cover ups, beach bags and shades. And as sun sets, we have dresses to take you from pool to party. Yes, summer, ALWAYS calls for a new wardrobe! Our shoot this month, offers pages of occasion looks whether you are attending a wedding or going to a trip to the races. I am sure you will agree, our local model, Holly, looks fantastic! We also have a 10-page Mumbles special which is packed full of all the things we love about the picture postcard seaside village. Can you love Swansea any more? As well as all our usual features and contributors, how can we forget about one of the biggest social event in Swansea - yes, our very own Swansea Life Awards. Nominations have been flying so make sure you vote for your favourite businesses by July 15. There are a number of great events going on in the Bay this summer so don’t forget to check out our calendar of activities and send us your sunny snaps. Have a great month and stay safe in the sun. Enjoy the read!

BUILD THE TENSION We love Molton Brown’s newest addition - the Vetiver & Grapefruit Collection. The scent is an innovative reconstruction of a classic cologne, building tension with nuanced vetiver and unexpected, piercing grapefruit. Enriched by the juiciness of lychee, floral accents of neroli and rose and livened up by the spice of white pepper and cardamom, the fragrance is highly addictive. The collection is available in a Bath and Shower Oil, £20, Body Lotion, £25, and Deodorant, £20, Molton Brown, Cardiff

jet set beauty tips Avoiding plane food, drinking half a litre of water every hour and spritzing a dewy skin mist over your face are just some of the best beauty tips for surviving a long-haul flight. LAURA DAVIES looks at the top ways you can keep your skin hydrated, dewy and glowing even whilst being up in the air. laura.davies@mediawales.co.uk

Pack some face and eye masks Your skin will get very little oxygen during flight time. To keep your skin hydrated, moisturised and brightened, wear a face or eye mask. Make yourself comfy and apply it whilst on-board to help keep your skin looking and feeling Refreshed.

Keep skin hydrated Long-haul flights are the ultimate skin dehydrators, so it’s important to keep drinking plenty of water. Aim to drink at least half a litre every hour of the flight. Coconut water is also great to drink onboard, as it’s rich in vitamins and contains electrolytes, which are very hydrating.

Don’t wear makeup Always try to avoid wearing makeup on flights. But if you want to look gorgeous when you take off and land, remove your makeup during take-off and re-apply 40 minutes before you land.

Wear a face cream If you have dry skin already, chances are that the aeroplane will dry out your skin even more. This can end up making your skin extra flaky or can cause spots. To avoid this, make sure you apply a lot of face cream. Face cream is a better choice to use over moisturiser, as it’s thicker and more hydrating when applied to the skin.

Spritz a dewy skin mist over your face The plane can get very stuffy at times, so bring a refreshing facial mist to spritz yourself with. This will keep your skin feeling hydrated and will maintain the moisture balance.

32 swansealife.co.uk

@LawsDx

Avoid waterproof makeup If you are going to wear makeup on the plane, always avoid using waterproof products. These can be really drying when you’re in the air. Waterproof mascara will leave your lashes feeling extra dry.

Get some sleep The best way to survive that long-haul flight and feel fresh when you land, is to get plenty of beauty sleep. Make sure you pack the essentials to help you feel comfortable, such as a pillow, comfy flight socks, a blanket and a sleeping mask.

Tame static hair Two good tricks to tame humid and static hair whilst flying is to either add hair oil or serum to the tips of your hair or rub a drop of water through the roots.

Avoid plane food Processed foods, microwaved airline food and things like crisps and pretzels should always be avoided on aeroplanes. These contain high amounts of sodium which can cause bloating. Try and eat some water based fruits and vegetables (like carrot sticks, cucumber or celery). These will help maintain hydration.

Pack the essentials It’s always important to pack the essentials like a travel-sized hand sanitizer, some facial wipes and a mini bottle of toner. Clean hands are a must so make sure you are regularly sanitizing. Facial wipes are also great if you’re planning on removing your makeup just after take-off, or if you just want to give your face a little refresh. After taking off your makeup with a wipe, always apply the toner. A mini toner is great to apply to your skin with a cotton pad to keep spots at bay whilst on the flight. Toner helps to take off any chemical irritants like fragrance which have been left over from the face wipe.

JOHNSON

Stylist & salon owner Lara Johnson shares her tips in her monthly column.

Colour statement Model: Emily Occupation: Student and model

EMILY SAYS... I fancied something different but didn’t want to necessarily cut any length from my hair. Sian came up with a great suggestion - Sunrise Curls - an inspirational idea for a hairdressing award. I was delighted with the look which went on to win the Trend Vision Award!

SIAN FROM LARA JOHNSON LIFESTYLE SAYS... Emily wanted to try something a little different with her hair. As a hairdresser it’s great to have this sort of challenge. When we are looking for inspiration at Lara Johnson Lifestyle, we like to look for different avenues. For this look I was inspired by the fantastic colours that are created by the sun rising over a sea mist. The beautiful pinky tones that softly fade and strengthen. After we had created the colour, I wanted to enhance with styling. We set on a small wand and brushed out creating the soft, almost candy floss texture that compliments the colour.

Wrap the twist around the base of the ponytail. Repeat with the higher section Wrap the rope twist around the ponytail base and secure with a grip Repeat on the right hand side of the head. If want to make more of the twists gently spread with your fingers and fix with some hairspray

Following Sian’s success in the Regional Heat, in which she is one of only 20 UK hairdressers to reach this year’s UK & Ireland Final for the Colour Vision Category, it makes her one of the country’s most sought-after and in-demand professional hair stylists. “I’m so proud to have reached the UK & Ireland Final of such a prestigious competition, “ Sian says. “I’ve always had a huge passion for hair and I am very excited about taking part and competing against the best hairdressers in the country at the Wella Professionals TrendVision Award UK & Ireland Final in October.

REAL WOMEN, WINNING LOOKS W ITH

C H R I S

H O W E L LS

Swansea based International Make Up Artist and winner of the National Federation of Hairdressing’s Welsh Make Up Artist of the Year award, Chris Howells, gives a Swansea woman a wedding look. Hannah is a college student from Swansea. I have had the pleasure of working with her on several occasions, most recently her high school prom. This was a little advertising shot we did together. The mood we wanted to convey was timeless, elegant beauty with a hint of modernity. To prepare the skin, I applied Nuxe Huille Prodigieuse to Hannah’s damp skin and massaged it gently in, following with Rodial Rose Gold Day cream. We wanted a really glowing complexion and a barely there foundation so applied Cover FX Illuminating Primer which gives a beautiful natural glow suitable for all skin tones and really keeps your makeup on. Next I applied Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser with a beauty blender sponge to really work the product into the skin, creating a perfect canvas. Any imperfections were removed by lightly applying Hourglass Hidden Concealer and blending it again with the beauty blender for a seamless finish. I then applied my trusty favourite, Illamasqua Gel Sculpt to the temples, under the cheekbones and under the bottom lip to enhance depth and dimension, blending again. The smallest amount of Becca Liquid Blush in Watermelon was buffed onto the apples of Hannah’s cheeks and the whole thing was set with Cover FX Perfect Setting Powder in Light. This powder has no talc and because it is coated with amino acids, it adheres beautifully to the skin, setting and perfecting without a trace and no flashback. On Hannah’s décolleté I buffed MAC Face and Body Foundation leaving light, dewy skin that is waterproof and transfer-proof. Hannah’s eyes are a dream to work on. I used a light wash of Urban Decay Eye Primer, then using Makeup Forever Cream Liner in Black, I “tight-lined” Hannah’s lash line and washed By Terry Ombre Blackstar eye crayon in Bronze Moon from lash to the crease and then blended it out. I curled the lashes and applied two coats of mascara before adding Eylure’s Luxe Lashes for extra life. I finished the look by using a black kohl in the inner rim. Illumination is always my favourite part, and this time was no exception - I used Ofra Highlighter in Rodeo Drive. This is a dreamy, super-bling highlighting powder that blends beautifully. The real pop though was the Hourglass Confessions Lip Stylo which gives Hannah a super stylish finish. 36 swansealife.co.uk

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Interested in keeping fit, having fun and raising money for charity. Then sign up for this year’s Gower Bike Ride on July 15. LAURA DAVIES takes a look at the event and the benefits of cycling laura.davies@mediawales.co.uk

From feeling happier to protecting your heart, we look at the health and fitness benefits of cycling

1. It may help you to live longer It should come as no big surprise that low levels of physical activity have been linked to a myriad of serious and life-threatening health conditions, and a cycle a day can be one of the most gentle and enjoyable ways to get moving. There’s lots of evidence to suggest that cycling can promote long life. A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, conducted on over 80,000 British adults, found that cycling participation produced a significant reduction in causes of mortality - including cardiovascular

44 swansealife.co.uk

@LawsDx

disease, diabetes and cancer. Another study, published in the British Medical Journal, found that commuters who cycled had a 52 per cent lower risk of dying from heart disease, and 40 per cent lower risk of dying from cancer than those that didn’t.

2. You can lose weight Struggling to lose those stubborn extra pounds? It might be time to pocket the car keys and invest in a bike. Cycling is a great way to shed the calories, build muscles in the lower body and gradually improve cardiovascular fitness at a sustainable pace. Cycling also packs on lean muscle particularity in the legs. When your foot hits the downstroke, you use a fiery combination of the glutes in the buttocks, the quadriceps

in the thighs, and the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles in the calves to propel you forward. As you backstroke the wheel back into position, the body then relies on the hamstrings in the back of the thighs and the flexor muscles in the front of the hips to keep you in motion, creating a total lowerbody workout. Perhaps best of all, it’s very low-impact, which means it’s much easier on the knees than running. You can get all of the benefits of a challenging workout without straining your joints.

3. You’ll sleep better We all know there’s nothing worse than staring at the ceiling in the early hours of the morning, willing sleep to come. So next time insomnia strikes, think about cycling your commute home instead. Cycling can

be tiring work and it has been shown to have a significant positive effect on those who suffer with sleep issues. Just as little as 20-30 minutes of cycling on alternate days is enough to have a significant impact on sleep quality. Getting enough sleep is vital for overall health, and plays a role in improving your mood and balancing your hormone levels, while ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of conditions including heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke.

4. It can boost your mood If you’re looking for a way to lift your spirits, cycling could be just the tonic. It’s basically an alternative way to achieve what is known as ‘runner’s high’. The euphoria you feel after a rigorous cycle is all down to the exercise-induced release of endorphins within your body, which are not only potent pain relievers, but also help to boost your mood. Cycling is also an effective way to shake off stress; exercising burns off the excess adrenaline you’ve built up during the day’s challenges, while slowing down the production of the stress hormone cortisol.

5. Better heart health Cycling is a cardiovascular activity, making it a thorough workout for the heart. Like any form of aerobic exercise, it also increases the presence of good cholesterol in the body, whose job is to transport fat away from arteries. In fact, The British Medical Association found that cycling just 20 miles a week can slash your risk of coronary heart disease in half, when compared with staying sedentary. To add to its merit, cycling is also one of the most enjoyable forms of exercise you can find. As with most things, long bike rides are best done with friends. So if you’re looking to build your physical fitness, why not take on a big cycling challenge? Not only does some company make for a more interesting ride, but you’ll all share the effort, help keep each other motivated and have fun along the way.

For over 30 years the Gower Bike Ride has been part of the Swansea summer calendar. Back in February, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) who has traditionally supported the iconic event over the years, cancelled the event. But thanks to organisers, White Rock Events, as well as support from the Evening Post, Wales Online, sponsors Cycle Solutions and other local firms, the annual summer event is returning to Swansea on Sunday, July 15. The ride, is 35 miles, and will start and finish at St Helen’s as it historically has done. This year the biggest change will be the route. After leaving 360 Cafe, cyclists will head towards Mumbles and confine the whole route to the Gower. This year, there will be no cycling through town, up Carmarthen Road or through Cockett. Instead the route takes in Mumbles and Welsh Moor for the first time in the history of the ride. Cycling marshalls will be on route as well as water stops along the way. This year, there is also a Junior Gower Bike Ride, which is open to riders aged 14 and under. The route is nine miles and is entirely off the highway and concentrates on the cycle track. Where the cycle track ends and joins the road to the pier there will be a road closure. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Almonds FO O D B E N E F ITS

Whether eaten at your desk or sprinkled on your porridge, these nutrient-loaded seeds should be your go-to healthy snack. laura.davies@mediawales.co.uk

1

They can help you to concentrate

Struggling to focus at your desk? Research has shown that almonds can help. A recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition that investigated the 'post-lunch cognitive crash' (when our memory and attention starts to dip in the afternoon) found that eating a high-fat lunch with almonds resulted in significantly smaller declines in memory scores, compared to a high-carb lunch without almonds. This is because almonds are packed with nutrients that are important for brain health, including vitamin E, folate and unsaturated fatty acids, and L-carnitine - which has been found to have brain-boosting, neuroprotective benefits.

@LawsDx

2

They're good for your heart

The high fat content in almonds can seem alarming on first glance, but don't panic; they're mainly mono- and polyunsaturated, aka the kinds that benefit your heart. Almonds contain linoleic acid, an important fatty acid which contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.

3

They're great for your skin

Forget expensive moisturisers and sheet masks. Almonds are secretly the healthiest and cheapest way to get an A-lister glow. They are high in zinc and riboflavin, and a source of niacin, which all contribute to the maintenance of normal nails and skin. They’re are also rich in vitamin E, which can help to protect cells from the oxidative stress caused by pollution, UV rays from the sun, cigarette smoke and other environmental factors - all of which contribute to the skin ageing process.

4

They can help you to lose weight

5

They'll give you energy

Planning to shed a few pounds? A 2014 study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that a mid-morning, 42g snack of almonds, compared to no snack, helped to control appetite and resulted in a reduced calorie intake for participants, for lunch and dinner. Rather than skipping a snack, keeping a pot of almonds by your desk may curb hunger pangs later in the day.

Almonds make a great alternative to caffeine-loaded drinks, like tea and coffee. As natural energy-boosters, they come loaded with good nutrition that will power you through a long shift at the office. Almonds are a source of energising plant protein. There are around 6g per 28g portion. As well as optimising brain function with proteins, they also contain a

potent mix of fibre and healthy fats to help you to stay focused, no matter what the day may bring.

ASK

DR. CHARLOTTE

This month Sketty GP and Swansea Life doctor Charlotte Jones, focusses on keeping safe in the sun.

48 swansealife.co.uk

SUMMER’S HERE... With all this sun here are a few pieces of advice to keep you safe in the sun. Are sunbeds safe so that I can get a healthy tan before travelling? In short, no. Whilst I appreciate that we all like a healthy glow, there are many safer options such as fake tans. I don’t like to wear flip-flops as my toenails are discoloured – can you clear it? There are a variety of causes of discoloured nails. Trauma from nails rubbing in shoes or boots can discolour nails (white / blue / black), psoriasis and other skin conditions can discolour nails and fungal infections are common making nails go thick, yellow and crumbly. Once you know what the cause is, many causes can be treated e.g. fungal nail treatments are available over the counter from your pharmacist and / or your GP surgery can prescribe oral tablets to clear them but all treatments take time to work and not all are suitable for all patients. Don’t forget that chiropodists and podiatrists are experts in this area and can give advice and often treatment on all aspects of foot care. ABMU Health Board offers a free walkin service (Monday – Friday 8.45am-11.30am and 1.10pm – 3.30pm) and telephone advice line (0300 300 0024) – even better you don’t need a GP referral. I have noticed a mole has changed – is it cancerous? If you have any moles that have changed shape / size /colour (especially uneven pigmentation) or bleed then see your GP. Also, if you have any “spots” that either seem not to heal / scale intermittently but don’t disappear / getting larger then see your GP to check it is not a small rodent ulcer (otherwise known as a basal cell carcinoma) or another form of skin cancer (squamous cell cancer). Always wear a hat +/- other sun protection garments, and apply an effective sun cream (reapplying regularly) to reduce your risk of skin cancer I am on long-term medication – can I take these abroad? Yes in most instances but it is really important that you check the Foreign and Commonwealth Countries advice carefully

with respect to medication laws / guidance – it also gives good advice for travelling with medication. Whilst you may not be surprised to hear that some strong painkillers are banned from many Arab countries, there are some surprising rules for other countries (e.g. cannot take Vicks to Japan). Most medications can travel in suitcases or be carried on BUT check with your pharmacist if you are not sure. Insulin needs to be kept at certain temperatures – most can be transported for short journeys using a cool bag and appropriate cool packs BUT I would recommend checking with your diabetic specialist nurse or diabetes UK. If you need to carry needles and syringes, some countries will recommend you carry a letter to advise you need these for medical reasons OR take a list of your medication with you. How do I find out if I need antimalarial tablets and what vaccinations I need? Always check if you need any special vaccinations / malaria protection before you travel. A good website to use is NHS Choices or www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk If in doubt, liaise with your practice nurse who will always be able to give you up to date advice and organise for you to have the necessary vaccines. Please leave plenty of time to have the vaccines as you may need more than one appointment for them and some require more than one injection to complete the course. If you need malaria tablets then you need to see your GP who will organise to give you the necessary prescription – don’t forget to think about other protection against malaria: covering up, mosquito nets, DEET / insect repellent creams etc. **Not all vaccinations are available free of charge on the NHS and malaria prescriptions will incur a fee as they too are not free of charge – check with your surgery about their charges but I strongly advice you not to spoil your holiday by not being fully covered and risking illness.**

A beautiful one-stop-shop for therapies

With everything from sports therapies to beauty treatments all under one roof, Bronleigh House is as versatile as it is beautiful, writes JENNY WHITE. When Hannah Hopkins set about creating Bronleigh House, she had several clear aims in mind. Firstly, she wanted to bring together a host of experienced therapists all under one roof. Secondly, she wanted to provide a beautiful environment where visitors can unwind and spend a whole day if they want to; and thirdly, she wanted to make it as convenient as possible – so it has ample parking, plus excellent public transport links.

An extensive refurbishment has made Bronleigh House a very special setting: Hannah has made the most of its original features, adding beautiful antique furniture but also giving it a modern twist. Visitors are frequently wowed by the surroundings – and they also comment on the beautiful smells, achieved with Neal’s Yard products. “I wanted to create a relaxing, warming environment, so I’m pleased that when

people come in they say it has a really nice feel,” says Hannah. “We get lots of comments on the original features such as the skirtings, coving and big restored antique lights – we’ve tried to keep the old Victorian look, for example by preserving the stained glass windows and restoring the staircase.” Hannah will add a coffee shop soon, making it easy to linger for longer, and clients are already taking advantage of the opportunity to enjoy several treatments in one visit. “We have people who come to have their hair done then have a massage, followed by beauty treatments,” she says. “They tell us they feel relaxed and welcomed here, which is exactly what I wanted to achieve.” Hannah herself is a sports therapist; she runs H H Sports Therapy clinic, whose clients include the university rugby team and the Ospreys Academy. “I’d run my own business from home for the last eight years and often referred people to other types of therapists, so I wanted to create

a place where I could provide different treatment options under one roof,” she says. Besides beautiful treatment rooms, Bronleigh House has a large room on the top floor with a glass balcony looking over the mountains, where yoga classes are held. “It is also available to anyone who wants to hold seminars or courses,” says Hannah. The centre’s total list of treatments includes sports therapy, osteopathy, semi-permanent makeup, a hair salon, chiropody, physiotherapy, cryo-lipolysis (fat freezing), reiki, reflexology, medical and traditional Chinese acupuncture, life coaching and facial aesthetics. The centre is already busy, with the therapists bringing their existing client bases with them. Now that it’s all up and running, Hannah is looking forward to seeing it develop further. “This is a place for people to come to feel good or, if they have injures, a place where they can resolve pain issues,” she says. “It’s an environment where you can relax with friends and family, spend a day and enjoy as many treatments as you like, and I’m very excited about moving on to the next stage by opening the coffee shop.”

Innovative care home welcomes ponies, peacocks and more

Advertising Feature

The owners of Hengoed Care know that spending time outdoors is important to the elderly – so they have worked to make their nature park as fascinating and beautiful as possible, writes JENNY WHITE.

Life at Hengoed Care has always been full of fun, stimulation and interest, but now the stunningly located care setting has something more to offer: its own resident ponies, lambs, peacocks and rabbits. The ground-breaking care homes, Hengoed Court & Hengoed Park, aim to give residents full and interesting lives while also engaging with the local community and residents’ families, and really make the most of their extensive grounds. Set on a sunny hillside with views over a lush green valley to

the sea, these include walkways bordered by trees and plants the residents helped to plant themselves. You can stroll around the lake and meet its resident ducks and swans; stop by the new aviary to meet the peacocks and other birds; and say hello to three friendly ponies, who came to the home from Woodfield Animal Sanctuary on Gower. All three of them have been saved from dire circumstances and given the most blissful lives – and they are set to make lives for Hengoed Care’s residents more enjoyable than ever. “We also want our residents’ grandchildren

and great grandchildren to enjoy coming here,” says Tim Williams, who is part of the family who own and run this well-established care setting. “We hope they’ll stop for a picnic in the grounds, and that the animals will provide plenty of interest for them.” Hengoed Care has always been at the forefront of innovative care for the elderly, finding plenty of ways to keep residents active and stimulated. For example, the home has strong links with local schools and nurseries, with the residents helping children with their reading and learning. Residents can also enjoy craft sessions, knitting clubs,

baking, gardening working out in the on-site gym, and much more. Throughout the year the home holds fetes and craft fairs, fundraisers for local charities and bus trips on vintage buses which take the residents on a tour of their old Swansea haunts. “We’re always struck by the memories triggered by the buses themselves,” says coowner Nicola Williams. “Our residents love re-experiencing the feel of the seats and the smell of the engine – it takes them back to their childhoods.” The home strives to be at the forefront of the latest findings about care for the elderly, and even works with Swansea University and Gower College, assisting them with both research and practice training. When it comes to its own staff, the emphasis is on care as a rewarding career, with plenty of opportunities to excel and progress. The home also works with local charities on a variety of projects, ranging from film-making based on residents’ memories through to arts, crafts and singing. Tim and Nicola have always been aware of the importance of outdoor activities for

the elderly, and the new developments in the grounds make these easier and more interesting than ever. For those who are too frail to go outside, the grounds provide wonderful views from the windows: counting birds and foxes has become a favourite pastime for some. The new developments in the grounds were recently marked with a fun open day full of activities for residents and their families, with proceeds going to Woodfield Animal Sanctuary - but this is still only the beginning. Having planted 2,000 new saplings, the aim is for residents to also enjoy woodland walks in the future, and to support local wildlife. One thing is certain: life at Hengoed Care is never humdrum; instead, it’s a celebration of life and nature, and each day is full of possibilities. “We wanted to create a place where we would be happy to see our own parents live,” says Tim. “In a time when community seems to be breaking down, our aim is to create a community here for our residents, and to knit that in with the local community and our residents’ families.”

A Fairy-tale day! Doctor Clare Whettleton and fireman Sam Phillips tie the knot in the first wedding at the beautifully transformed Fairyhill By Oldwalls Words: Lisa Walsh Photos: Michelle Huggleston Everyone dreams of a fairy-tale wedding, and when Swansea doctor Clare Whettleton tied the knot with fireman Sam Phillips in the first wedding in Fairyhill’s new Kaleidoscope Room, her wish came true. Clare married her childhood sweetheart in front of 120 guests and the photographs tell a story of much love and happiness in a dream wedding venue.

Part of Fairyhill’s £1 million refurbishment project included a modern extension to the west wing of the old house, creating a function space especially designed to host weddings.

Here, Clare tells us what was so special about the venue and her wedding day...

he glass construction called the K-Room T (Kaleidoscope) has floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views over Fairyhill’s 24 acres of grounds and woodland.

“We were together in high school before going our separate ways. I went to university in Bristol, Sam was living in Aberystwyth.

Clare and Sam’s big day was the first booked in the new K-Room.

Firstly, how did you meet Sam?

“Ten years later, we met again at a mutual friend’s birthday night out.”

What stood out in particular? “It was the little things at Fairyhill that made a difference. The staff made sure we had a plate of canapés and, at 2am, we thoroughly enjoyed tucking into a plate of food from the buffet the staff had saved for us. They knew the way to our hearts! “Our beautiful bouquets and table decorations were designed by Eve Francesca, Swansea, with a buffet and evening entertainment from Neath wedding and party band Los Devitos.

“Quite simply, the team made sure everything ran smoothly and the men were suitably ready for their speeches after staff plied them with shots! “It was truly the best day of our lives and we will treasure for ever.” What was the food like? “It was just wow! Those arancini (the best ever!), that beef, that cheesecake, those canapés and that buffet!

“We loved our meetings to discuss the food and a night of tasting with Chris Keenan, Fairyhill’s chef, was honestly one of the best nights we’ve had together! “I couldn’t even stop Sam licking the plate it was so good. “Adding in the amuse-bouche and champagne sorbet to make it a five-course menu literally made us the happiest couple on this planet.”

summer cocktails 6

As the summer social season rolls in, cocktails play a starring role especially those that don’t challenge the senses but have just the right balance to leave you wanting another. Here are six simple but moreish recipes to fit our busy, modern lifestyles. Mix them up and enjoy with some cicchetti, tapas or light bites...

1. Martini Riserva & Tonic The vibrant bitter-sweet taste of Martini is finding ever increasing legions of fans and can be enjoyed in two styles: Martini Riserva Speciale Rubino Vermouth di Torino (currently reduced to £11 from £15, 75cl, Ocado) - a bright ruby red vermouth, with a delicate balance of botanicas to create a full-bodied herbal and complex style. Or Martini Riserva Speciale Ambrato Vermouth di Torino (£15, 75cl, Ocado) - a floral and aromatic blend of small parcels of Moscato d’Asti produces a beautifully honeyed style with a light, bitter taste profile. Ingredients: One part Martini Riserva Speciale Rubino or Ambrato, one part tonic water. Method: Fill a tumbler with ice, add one part Martini and one part tonic water (can tweak to taste), garnish with an orange wedge (Rubino) or lemon wedge (Ambrato).

2. Perfect Negroni Some may say there’s no better fix than the bitterly complex flavours of a negroni that come together with such ease, which could be one of the reasons it’s been inspiring countless variations for close to a century. Today, two Italian mixologists have created Seven Hills Italian Dry Gin (£34.99, 70cl, Amazon), which they cite as the perfect Italian gin for the perfect negroni. An aromatic spirit, with citrus and herbal notes, the inspiration for the ingredients dates back to when Romans used to add juniper to their wine to help them gain an appetite, hence the aperitivo. Saluti! Ingredients: 30ml Seven Hills Gin, 15ml Campari, 15ml Antica Formula Carpano Vermouth.

4

Method: Half fill a mixing glass with ice. Add the gin, Campari and vermouth. Stir well, then strain into an old-fashioned glass. Garnish with a twist of grapefruit.

3. Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla Negroni Elsewhere, Tanqueray No Ten have caused a big stir by adding a Spanish twist to the negroni with their delicious new flavour profile, Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla (£27.45, 70cl, 31Dover.com). Infused with bittersweet Seville oranges, the fruity, zesty notes mingle with the four botanicals in the gin. Here’s the recipe to get the juices flowing... Ingredients: 25ml Tanqueray Flor De Sevilla, 25ml Campari, 25ml sweet vermouth, fresh orange slice or peel. Method: Fill an old-fashioned glass with ice. Add the gin, Campari and vermouth, stir well and garnish with an orange slice.

4. The Silent Pool Secret Garden Not content with a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2017, Silent Pool Gin (currently reduced to £35 from £39.50, 70cl, Waitrose Cellar) set their sights on the Chelsea Flower Show this year, where their Silent Pool Secret Garden not only proved a blooming good show by winning a Silver-Gilt medal, but thirsty spectators were certainly taken by their ‘after hours’ G&T party. A floral-inspired tipple, we jostled for their signature cocktail recipe so you don’t have to... Ingredients: 35ml Silent Pool Gin, 15ml Poire Williams, 15ml St Germain, 15ml honey water, 35ml chamomile tea, 25ml prosecco. Method: Fill a high-ball glass with ice. Add the gin, eau de vie, St Germain, honey water and tea. Stir slowly and top with prosecco. Garnish with gypsophila (Baby’s-breath).

5

5. Rock Rose VinChill Factor The signature ceramic bottle of the multiaward winning Rock Rose Gin (£34, 70cl, DunnetBayDistillers.co.uk) always looks good on a cocktail trolley, especially if you’re serving drinks al fresco. But what about this delectable infusion of gin with red wine? Embellished with a dash of pomegranate syrup to give it some extra punch, the berry red bubbles are deliciously refreshing. Give it a go... Ingredients: 25ml Rock Rose Gin, 25ml red Rioja, 15ml pomegranate syrup, prosecco to top up. Method: Half fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the gin, Rioja and pomegranate syrup, shake vigorously and strain into a chilled flute. Top with prosecco and garnish with an orange twist.

6. St Germain Spritz The beauty of this concoction is not only that it’s extremely moreish but it’s also refreshingly light, so you can have two or three without having to worry about feeling too squiffy before the sun’s gone down. And with elderflower season in full bloom, the natural floral notes in St Germain Liqueur Elderflower (£19, 50cl, Ocado), combined with prosecco and sparkling water really hits the spot. Here’s how to create this elegant and quintessentially French aperitif... Ingredients: 1.5 parts St Germain, 2 parts prosecco, 2 parts sparkling water, 1 lemon. Method: Fill a tall Collins glass with ice. Add the prosecco first, then St Germain, then sparkling water - the order is essential to bring out the best of everything - stir slowly and garnish with a lemon twist. Ta-da!

CHOCOHOLIC! We love M&S’ white chocolate bar filled with a creamy strawberry ganache.

Elderflower and lemon cake

Strawberries & Cream Filled Chocolate Bar, £3, M&S, Swansea

WHAT’S NEW You might think of Baileys as a cosy Christmas drink, but you’d be wrong. You can now get this luscious new Strawberries & Cream edition, which takes the classic Irish cream and adds a summery twist. It’s already gone down a storm in the States, and it’s coming to the UK for a limited time only. So get it while you can!

This is a lovely light, fragrant and easy cake inspired by the recent Royal wedding cake. It is infused with elderflower cordial and Amalfi coast lemons which are pungeunt and juicy. Elderflowers are small white starry flowers that bloom from spring through summer. They have been a staple in kitchens for centuries. I remember my grandmother picking the blooms and making cordial and jellies out of them. Inventive chefs are finding ways to use the blossoms and berries in their Michelin star menus, elderflower tempura fritters anyone? With elderberry sorbet?

MEXICAN AND MARGARITAS LAURA DAVIES heads to city centre restaurant, Cocina, to sample some Mexican cuisine laura.davies@mediawales.co.uk

It may be a dull, drizzly evening, but inside Mexican restaurant Cocina, the atmosphere is more than colourful and vibrant. With subtle nods to Mexican culture, a pinata hanging in the doorway, Mexican sombrero’s and mini cacti peppered around the tables, the restaurant immediately transports you to sunny climes. On arrival at the Swansea city centre eatery, my husband and I, were greeted instantly by welcoming, friendly and attentive staff. In fact, throughout our experience at Cocina, we could not fault our waitress and her colleagues. Despite being to Mexico three times, I always find it difficult to decide what food to eat or admittedly remember what the difference is between a taco and a burrito - but the menu is so detailed you will have no problem knowing what is what, even if you have never eaten Mexican before. Plus there is a screen on the wall to show you the meals - always a winner! The menu is very impressive offering everything from tapas, salads, to meat and fish dishes. There are also special menus for vegans and vegetarians - so something for everyone - all packed full of classic Mexican dishes with a modern twist. Equally impressive is its large drinks list, offering Mexican beers, cocktails to non alcoholic drinks and mocktails. An extensive menu makes choosing very difficult indeed. I was tempted to opt for a Cocina Chicken Burger, but decided 70 swansealife.co.uk

@LawsDx

on trying something different: the Grilled Chicken Brochetas, two lemon and herb marinated chicken skewers, served with mixed peppers, onions, courgettes and cherry tomatoes and served on a bed of lemon and coriander rice with a garlic dip on the side. For start, I opt for Baby Back Ribs, slow-cooked pork ribs marinated in Cocina sauce. My husband, chose a fish option - Mexican Spiced Snapper, red snapper marinated in achiote with a lemon and caper sauce, mango chunks, lime rice and mixed peppers. And for start, he went for Fiery Wings, succulent Buffalo chicken wings served with a choice of Mexican hot sauce. Cocina is full of nods to Mexican culture: colourful paintings and murals, colourful furniture, and decorated skulls and skeletons which hints to the country’s Day of the Dead festival. There is even a bucking bronco in the middle of the room. With Mexican music playing in the background, I sipped on my mocktails - they were just as good as the alcoholic versions! There was a lovely feel-good vibe to the restaurant on the Friday we visited, with groups of diners, couples and families enjoying their meals. Food was plentiful and service was very prompt. Our dishes looked the part, colourful and inviting and it was all very flavoursome and tasty. We couldn’t fault any of it - we only wished our stomachs would allow us to eat more of it!

Despite being fit to burst, we were determined to try the Churros for dessert. I have heard so much about them, and despite there being a great dessert selection on offer, we ordered a small portion to share. When I say small, to us it was more than enough! The warm Mexican stick doughnuts with cinnamon and sugar on top, were served in a cone with caramel and chocolate sauce on the side. They were delicious and melt in the mouth, but the eight between us, defeated us! It was a perfect night out and seeing I pass Cocina on my way into town every lunchtime, I can’t believe I have never been there before. I vow to return, whether it’s for a margarita or to take advantage of its £5.95 lunch meal deal.

The only thing missing this time was the sunshine. But when the sun does make an appearance, the outdoor terrace awaits. So, if you’re looking to sample a Mexican gem, take a trip to Cocina amigos!

Touched by legend on exquisite Gower, The King Arthur is a delightful, country inn and wedding venue. The eating areas of the pub consist of the main bar with an open log fire, the Gower Room with its nautical features, the cosy, traditional restaurant and of course the popular front green with an array of picnic benches. Customers sat at the benches can often watch horses, sheep and cattle roaming the beautiful countryside. “This pub is perfect for visiting any time of the year, but in the Summer there is a fabulous beer garden that is actually in the sun. Meals are served outside with military precision, its lovely to see families, dogs and even horses being able to eat or drink outside” Trip Advisor review Stonekins 5th June 2018 The King Arthur is renowned for serving homecooked food to suit

HOUSE & HOME

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE

OPTIONS APLENTY IN HOME OF MANY PARTS Putting your own stamp on a home is what every owner wants to do. And this one in Swansea offers that flexibility, as CHRIS PEREGRINE found out.

T

hose who pride themselves on their knowledge of Swansea’s retail history may recall the long lost Acorn Country Stores in Upper Killay. It is a distant memory now because replacing it back in 2001 was a four or even five bedroom detached house designed by Mo and Sal Mattu. With three children, they wanted a family home built to their specifications.

to fulfil our dream. The architect designed the house to our specified requirements and was completed in March 2001. “My wife Sal loved the rear south facing aspect and the house is filled with light from every elevation. She is also a keen gardener, so it met all her requirements. It has been a very happy and joyful home for us and our three children during their teenage/adult years. They have all married and flown the nest. So it is time for us to downsize a bit, chill out, travel and go for long walks.”

It certainly fitted the bill, but, with all three offspring now married, the size of the house is now too much for mum and dad, so a move is being planned.

But there are exciting times to recall of the site transformation from a store attracting staff and customers to a home drawing in family and friends.

“It was always a dream of mine to build our own home, designed to our requirements and lifestyle,” said Mo. “So when a potential plot became available in the location of our choice, it was an opportunity

“It is a light, airy, spacious house with sun throughout the day,” he said. “It is set back from the road with a large drive. When our daughter got married a few weeks ago, we had 13 vehicles on the

drive. It has versatile additional living area/rooms, en-suite bedrooms and additional bathrooms. “The gardens, which Sal has designed, created and established over the last 17 years, are our pride and joy. We had 100 tons of topsoil delivered to the site to create the rear garden. We have got countryside views to Mumbles and Gower from it.” Inside and you have a choice of rooms. There are four bedrooms on the first floor, but there are so many reception rooms downstairs that one can be used as an extra bedroom. Mo thinks the prospect of having four reception rooms will appeal to prospective buyers who can put their own stamp on proceedings. What the new occupants will find is a light and airy property with a generous central hallway, all those receptions rooms, a cloakroom, a utility room and access to the garage. Two of the four bedrooms have en-suites and there is also a family bathroom. Beech flooring is a feature of the hallway, and the downstairs rooms in general, and it also has two frosted windows, spotlights, coving and an understairs cupboard. On the ground floor you will find an extra bedroom to go with the four upstairs. The study has built-in shelves and there is also a play/music room and cloakroom. The family lounge overlooks the garden and countryside and has a marble fireplace with inset gas fire. French doors form part of the day room, which has coving and two side windows which offer a similar view to the lounge. The kitchen/diner has base and wall beech cabinets, granite worktops, a china sink and drainer, a gas cooker, two ovens, a built-in dishwasher, half tiled walls, coving and spotlights. And the all-important utility room has a range of fitted sliding door cupboards for storage, a built-in butler sink, granite worktops and a wall mounted boiler for central heating and hot water. The first floor landing offers access to the attic with a pull down ladder and hatch. Bedroom number one benefits from sliding wardrobe doors with mirrored fronts and coving, while the en-suite includes a mains corner shower unit. The second bedroom, which has mirrored and sliding wardrobe doors, also has an en-suite with a main corner shower and spotlights. There is coving and laminate flooring in the other two bedrooms and there is also a dressing room. Finally on the first floor is the family bathroom with a mains corner shower, a bath and spotlights among the attributes. The garage has a electronic up-and-over door. There is an ornamental front garden and a side entrance gets you into the south-facing rear garden, which includes a terrace and lawn with shrubs, bushes, trees and views of the countryside. “We hope the prospective new owners will enjoy and love the house as much we have,” said Mo.

The family firm, which has carried out more than 3,000 projects across South Wales, prides itself on offering the latest and best products in its field.

breaking, home improvement products on display include five conservatories and orangeries, two of which have solid roofs.

Some of the ground-

The solid roofs are

transforming what was once a seasonal space into a year-round room. High-quality insulation means they have the same thermal properties as a traditionally constructed roof, and they can be retro-fitted to an existing conservatory. In the Gorseinon showroom, there are fullyfurnished garden-rooms constructed with both a traditional looking, tiledeffect roof as well as a sleek, modern, grey solid roof.

The rooms also showcase clever, super-insulated loggia columns that not only boost the thermal properties of a conservatory, but allow for stunning floor-to-ceiling windows to create a real ‘wow’ factor! Another popular product to transform the appearance of your home is sleek aluminium windows and doors. Dubbed the ‘architectschoice’ due to their contemporary appeal, the slim frames of these

products create a modern look and can be an instance ‘facelift’ to your home. For classic homes there are hardwood and ‘Heritage’ UPVC windows and doors that carry all of the hallmarks of traditional joinery. Nigel Hocking of Securahome said that the company was proud lead the way on home improvements:

“Whether its new windows and doors or a home extension, our aim is to give customers the best possible quality, both in products and installation. “It’s a source of great pride that 70 per cent of our business comes through recommendation and we are hugely excited, 24 years on, to be able to say that we are able to improve the quality of our products every year.”

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

The kitchen is the heart of the home so why not show it some love with a few style hacks that will have it in vogue in no time at all

Kitchens can make or break a family home.

cutlery gracing interiors shops soon.

And if yours is past its sell-by date it could be time to invest in a full-on rip out. But if budget constraints won’t allow a restart, there are plenty of DIY tricks you can adopt to ensure your kitchen is Michelin-star worthy.

And finally, I cannot stress how much lighting plays an integral part in interior design. And I’m not talking about fixtures.

Firstly, consider adding additional space with some shelving.

4

1. Shelving is ideal for storage and style 2. Use strip lighting in areas where you will be prepping food 3. Expect to see plenty of gold tones 4. Use lighting to highlight – and mask – certain spots in the kitchen 5. Shelving can be both practical and aesthetically pleasing

Not only are they a great storage device but you can also turn them into a real focal point. Use chunky shelves to showcase your favourite crockery, tea cups or utensils. Intersperse your kitchen essentials with a favourite slogan print or graphic and add an ornament that serves little purpose other than to look great to bring a real style statement to the room. Speaking of style statements, kitchen accessories, even those that serve a useful purpose, are available in every colour imaginable. From art deco tea trays and fabulously funky colanders to minimalist napkin holders and statement soap dishes.

Gold accents are set to be big news in the kitchen so expect to see gold-plated teabag dishes, cooling trays and

Lighting can be used to highlight a favourite part of your kitchen, be it a recessed shelving unit or a vibrant splashback, and can even mask the spots you don’t like. It also serves a very practical purpose too. Where will you prepare food? Do you need lighting over your oven? Task lighting is essential so make sure you have defined the most important areas in your kitchen so you know where your lights need to be placed. Other areas, such as informal dining locations, need mood lighting – a little illumination but not as harsh as task lighting.

A: You can have the real look of wooden floors without the maintenance required of sanding, sealing polishing etc. The Amtico range of tiles look as good as ceramic, however, they are warmer and softer to the touch with special design strips in between the tiles. A: Most competitor design floors are sourced from the Far East or Europe however we are proud to say that Amtico is made in England. Our customers want UK products not just to support the economy but also the fact that they believe they are manufactured to a good standard.

Q: What are the steps to creating an Amtico design floor? A: Easy, simply call into one of our stores. HOUSE & HOME

Herbs come into their own in summer, added to drinks, salads, dips and sauces. If you fancy having a go at growing some summer herbs at home, here are three of the easiest to grow - which will come back year after year if you look after them. laura.davies@mediawales.co.uk

1. Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) These onion-flavoured perennials are among the prettiest herbs to grow, their pocket-sized purplepink globes flowering in early summer, so are ideal as ornamentals in the front of a border or as additions to a rockery. The snips from their slender grass-like stalks have long been added to sour cream as a jacket potato filling, but you can also add them to salad leaves for a peppery taste or sprinkle the cut stalks over creamy soups or sauces for flavour, and use the edible flowers as colourful decoration. Sow outdoors in spring where you want them to end up, in soil with added organic matter, and rake to a fine tilth before sowing. You can also easily sow them indoors for planting in a sunny spot in late spring or summer, watering them in well. Keep them weeded and watered in dry spells. Remove faded flower heads and stalks to keep them looking tidy and divide clumps every few years in the autumn, which should keep the plants healthy. You can harvest them when the leaves are at least 15cm (6in) tall, cutting them off at the base with sharp scissors.

2. Thyme This easy-to-grow perennial herb offers so much more than flavour. You can inhale its delicious scent on warm, sunny days, enjoy its summer flowers and huge variety of leaves, which can cascade over walls or thrive in pots and herb borders. There are many types and some are not really culinary plants but are grown for their flowers, so make sure you pick up the right type if you want to use it for cooking. Thyme needs to be planted in a sunny spot in welldrained soil or in a terracotta pot filled with John Innes No 1 potting compost mixed with 50per cent potting grit to make a well-drained mix. The best time to plant is early summer, after the last frosts, spacing busy, upright types 23cm (9in) from their neighbours and spreading varieties 30cm (12in) apart.

96 swansealife.co.uk

@LawsDx

Water them in and water again in dry spells until the plants become established, after which time you won’t need to water them much at all, and don’t feed them. Good culinary thymes include T. vulgaris, which has strongly flavoured, short leaves and deep mauve-pink flowers in June and July, and T. x citriodorus, which has lemon-scented leaves and a slightly milder flavour. To harvest, snip young shoots from the tips of the stems.

3. Mint This is the go-to herb of summer, thrown in to pep up delicious salads, or added to Jersey Royals, or livening up a fruity Pimm’s on the patio. There are so many uses for mint and it is among the toughest of herbs. Plant it in a pot because if you put it in the ground with other herbs or flowers it’s likely to take over. If you want it in a border, contain it in a bucket by digging a hole big enough and then placing the container into the hole, leaving the rim above ground so shoots don’t escape. Again, not all mint is good for cooking, so be careful with your choice. Mint thrives in moist but well-drained soil - multipurpose compost will be fine when growing in pots - and many of them prefer some shade during the day. Give mint plenty of water in hot, dry weather and avoid planting different types close together as they may lose their original scent and flavour. Pick leaves regularly to stop it getting leggy - the flavour is also more intense if you harvest it before it flowers. But if you leave it, when it’s finished flowering in summer, cut flowered shoots back to around 5cm (2in) above the base of the plant. If plants become straggly, divide them and replant in new compost.

VICTORIA WADE’S GARDEN Join Victoria Wade, an RHS Gold winning garden designer from Killay, with her seasonal growing tips.... www.victoriawade.co.uk

@WadeLandscapes

Dog friendly gardens Keep it secure… When we design dog friendly gardens, secure boundaries are our number one priority. Determined dogs will squeeze through even the smallest gaps in hedges, jump fences and some even open garden gates, so make sure your garden is safely enclosed. Make sure that your dog is microchipped and wears a collar with your contact details in the event that he does manage to get out. Keep other pets in the garden, such as chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs, safely enclosed and consider your neighbours pets too if your dog can see them through the fence.

Toilet training… If your beautifully manicured lawn is being stained by your pesky pup’s pee then placing ‘dog rocks’ in their water bowl may help, which can help to neutralise the pH in the urine, but only work well if the dog drinks exclusively from their water bowl. Artificial grass may be a good alternative for small spaces. It is robust, easy to clean, and there is no need to worry about muddy paws. We have trained our dog Rusty to do his business in a gravelled area at the side of our house which is easy to keep clean and it stops the lawn from being stained.

Protect those plants… If your dog is a bit crazy like ours and likes to tear around the garden at top speed, trampling through the flower beds and causing chaos, then it is probably a good idea to select robust plants that can withstand being a bit 108 swansealife.co.uk

squashed, or use metal plant supports over more delicate species. Raised beds are great if you have a dog who loves to dig and can make life a bit easier for you too. Carefully supervised play times, or limiting access to your precious plants may be necessary for more boisterous breeds. We have fenced off an area of the garden at the side of our house so that that Rusty can’t get to the rest of the garden (and my lovely roses!) unsupervised.

Watch what are they eating… Lots of dogs and especially puppies, will chew or even eat anything they can get hold of in a garden. Many common garden plants (such as daffodils, hydrangeas, ivy, lupins and sweet peas) are poisonous to dogs- the kennel club’s website has a comprehensive list which is well worth checking out before you choose any new plants. If your dog shows a keen interest in slugs and snails then it is really important that they are wormed monthly, as they will be at risk of lungworm which can be fatal.

Keep them cool… When you are relaxing in the garden this summer, make sure you provide a shady spot for your four legged friend to relax and cool off. A paddling pool is a really fun way for water loving dogs to keep cool, and they will love playing with a hose pipe or sprinkler too! Try freezing some of your puppy’s favourite treats and toys into a block of ice- it is a great way to keep them cool and will keep them entertained for ages!

MUST HAVES FOR JULY With JOSEPH ATKIN, Head Gardener at Aberglasney Gardens in Carmarthenshire

Hydrangea aspera

By midsummer our gardens are coming to their best and usually the biggest problem is finding enough room for the multitude of wonderful plants you’d like to include in the display; it can mean having to make some ruthless choices! There are however certain plants that we grow at Aberglasney that have more than earned their place, and that are easy to grow making them ideal for the home garden

Lysimachia atrpurpurea ‘Beaujolais’

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Mariesii Perfecta’/‘Blue Wave’

Sometimes you find a plant that is just a joy to work with and this one them. Lysimachia ‘Beaujolais’ produces drooping spikes of pink flowers that seem to combine well with a multitude of other plants. Surprisingly, it seems to work in both pastel and hot colour schemes and has a pleasing foliage which is a bonus. Unlike many of the Lysimachia this one is not a thug which is probably its most important feature. Generally, it is a short-lived perennial and needs replenishing every few years but it is well worth the effort and conveniently it is freely available. We find it works best dotted through the front and middle of a border as it is such a versatile colour.

This lace cap Hydrangea has been around for many years and is an old favourite as well as being one of the easiest to grow. Most importantly though, it is one of the best for staying blue when grown in an alkaline soil. It produces huge blue heads that retain their daintiness and that last well into the autumn. Hydrangeas thrive on the high rainfall we get in Welsh gardens making them excellent shrubs for mid and late summer colour. Although there are many others that are easily grown I have a fond memory of literally, pushing branches into the ground along the side of a path, and they have now formed a wonderful hedge. It really is that easy. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Height = 1.5m Spread =2m Position/Aspect = half shade to sun Soil = Any but the best blues are still grown in acidic soils Pest and diseases = No real problems Style = Mixed border, shrubbery, Asiatic style, shade garden, woodland garden

Rosa ‘Rosmary Foster’ This rare rambling rose is another must have! Although it is particularly vigorous it is one of the most manageable. It makes a great wall shrub with plenty of supports to tie it onto and although it requires some work and space it has some great qualities. The first is the huge heads of flowers that are have a striking scent. It’s also long lasting for a rambler. Another quality is that it seems to be a favourite for bees and other pollinators. Grow it against a sunny wall combined with an early or late season Clematis to create a succession of flower throughout the summer months. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

114 swansealife.co.uk

Height =3m Spread =5m Position/Aspect = A sunny spot, best managed against a wall Soil = Any fertile Pest and diseases = Black spot is much less of a problem with this Rose Style = Cottage garden, mixed border, rose garden arches or pergola’s or walls.

Sea Birds Bamboo Salad Bowl with Lid, £18, Salad Servers, £6, and Dip Tray Trio, £14, Cath Kidston, Cardiff

We love Cath Kidston's quirky seaside bird print, which evokes thoughts of childhood summer holidays, building sandcastles on the beach and walks along the coastline. Best of all, the salad bowl lid can be used as a chopping board, and to fend off any flying picnic pests.

Portmeirion Botanic Garden Tableware currently from £7.25 each (sale price), 10-inch Dinner Plates, £16.50 each, and other serving pieces from a selection at Portmerion (picnic hamper, tablecloth and other props, stylist’s own)

Portmeirion’s classic Botanical Garden print has been in bloom for 40 years, and there’s good reason why we still covet these lovely ceramic pieces with their whimsical floral prints. Timeless, they can effortlessly be placed together without having to worry about being too matchymatchy, and the flora and fauna can also be paired with pretty pastels to bring out colour palette - or highlight seasonal produce and favourite family recipes, of course. 128 swansealife.co.uk

Entertaining the idea of serving a piping hot pizza, as well as kebabs from the grill? Cocktail Jug with Stirrer, £45, The White Company, Cardiff

At one with nature, this pretty hamper has a decorative leaf print design and holds all the necessities for your open-air spread. Along with ceramic plates, plastic wine glasses, cutlery, salt and pepper shakers and a bottle opener and corkscrew, there's just enough room to pack the sarnies and coronation chicken. A chilled bottle of wine or six-pack of beer will need to be carried separately in a cooler bag.

With so many long refreshing drinks, such as a P&T (white port and tonic - also dubbed the new G&T), tickling our taste buds, this cocktail jug is a must for smart summer soirees.

If you're going to plant yourself outside and host a garden party, you may as well invest in some statement tableware complemented by green thistles, such as these lovely artisan artichoke candle holders, and dinner plates in burnt orange to mirror the setting sun.

9

John Lewis Poolside Gin Glass, Orange, £8, Highball Glass, Turquoise, £6, Fun Watermelon Tumbler, £5, John Lewis, Cardiff Of course, we'd all like to be poolside this summer, but if your outdoor space can't accommodate a swimming pool, John Lewis' 'Poolside' stemware range is the next best thing. And you can always pump up the paddling pool, dip your toes in and reward yourself with a G&T...

8

Rattan-style Keter Cool Bar, £43, Morrisons, Parc Pemberton What’s not to love about this weatherproof party table, which doubles as a poser table and cool box all in one? The table lid extends over an ice bucket base with double wall insulation, to keep your wine and beer perfectly chilled while you’re firing up the barbie and marinating the chicken thighs.

10

Antigua Painted Wood Bistro Set, currently reduced to £74.99 from £99.99, Very.co.uk

An instant style update, even the smallest balcony should be able to accommodate this folding bistro dining set, which is ideal for small spaces. Made out of solid wood with a hard-wearing finish, the canary yellow colour screams summer and it can be folded away when not in use, or placed in a cosy corner with a lovely vase of fresh flowers for a cheerful scheme indoors. swansealife.co.uk 129

SWANSEA BAY WALK Join ANDREW MORGAN as he leads us on a Swansea Bay walk.

Start/Finish location ........ Bishopston, Pyle Corner Distance .................................... 4 miles (2 hours) Level ............................................ Moderate Parking ....................................... On-street near Pyle Corner

An evening stroll to Caswell

Summer evenings are a great way to unwind after work so each week Swansea Ramblers has a walk to enjoy the longer days. On Thursday July 26 we’ll walk along the coast path from Langland to Caswell, watching for seals on the way. The coast path is easy to follow, just keep the sea on your left and follow the well-constructed path as it rises and falls with the undulation of the limestone cliffs.

Cross and turn uphill to a right turn into Hillgrove. At the bend of this road, turn left then descend the right of way. Noting the golf course ahead, follow the path at its edge until you emerge onto the fairway. Continue straight across to the road and descend back into Langland. Remember, you are welcome to join us on this walk or any of our other walks. Have a look at the website, www. swansearamblers.org.uk where all our walks are listed.

The route goes past the Langland Brasserie where afterwards, we will return for refreshments but for now head west along the tarmacadam coast path as it curves to the western point of Langland. Turning a bend, leave views of the bay behind you and head towards Caswell. Watch for a seal or two and you may be lucky and see a head popping out of the water to stare back at you with just as much interest in you as you have in it! Another climb and a bend in the path will bring you to a view of Caswell in the distance. Arriving there, we’ll turn right and start uphill on the pavement. You could continue along the pavement to the top but a nicer way will be to cross the road opposite the visitor centre and ascend the woodland path. Turning right at the path junction, follow this until the path emerges onto Caswell Road.

GOLFING RETREAT

Summer is in full swing, and for those looking to tee-up a short break in the sun, the UK has some superb golf breaks to enjoy - whether you’re looking for a solid par or relaxing spa! JONATHAN ROBERTS visited the UNESCO World Heritage site at Telford. The beauty of a golf break at Q Hotels’ Telford Golf Club Resort is once you have parked up you won’t need to get back into the car until it’s time to leave. With a championship course, a spa, a gym and heated indoor pool as well as a choice of areas to eat and drink there’s no shortage of activities to keep you occupied or places to relax. We were here to test ourselves on the course and the whole set-up is geared to get the best from your game. Like everyone else we came across during our stay they are a welcoming bunch in the professional’s shop and the locker rooms are just next door. There is a driving range just a wedge away from the first so there is no excuse for not getting the rhythm going before arriving at the tee. In between is the practice green and anyone looking to score well would be

140 swansealife.co.uk

advised to invest some time here as once out on the course you’ll find large undulating greens that are quick but true (even though we played at the start of May). The first, like every hole , is tree-lined and demands a good strike from the tee to set up the approach. Telford is not so tight as to make the drives daunting, but playing 6,741 yards off the back tees and 6,454 off the fronts, straight long driving is required to make pars or better. Start wandering and you’ll begin to rack up some hefty numbers. The course is fully matured and it was here a young Welshman by the name of Ian Woosnam won his first title on a road that would lead to Ryder Cup glory and a green jacket at the Augusta National. The front nine of this par 72 is pretty flat and while it will test the best of ball strikers it is also playable for the higher handicapper. Positioning both on the fairway and on the green is key and nowhere more so than the signature 8th.

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

A dog leg right, there is little margin for error if you are to get close enough to the green to be hitting a medium to high iron over the water. The back nine is more undulating and makes full use of the contours of the boundaries of the complex. Those who have opted for a buggy will see the full benefit on this nine. The 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th is a great run of holes that includes two tough par fours, a genuine par five and a short par four around a corner that is one of the few obvious birdie opportunities Telford offers up. The 18th takes you up to the clubhouse and is overlooked by The Gorge Bar & Lounge. Here you can sit outside on the terrace and dissect what went wrong or right while watching others complete their rounds. At the other side of the hotel is the main restaurant and bar where the views across the Shropshire countryside to the Ironbridge Gorge are simply spectacular. Should you decide on a change of scenery then Ironbridge itself is only 10 minutes away in a taxi and its mix of traditional pubs and modern bistros is worth a visit. But really there’s no need to venture from the resort as it has it all.

UNDERNEATH THE STARS...

! y a w h The pos

Forget leaky tents and mud... modern camping is all about style and luxury - with everything from en suite bathrooms to hot tubs. LAURA DAVIES heads to west Wales to find out. laura.davies@mediawales.co.uk

You can’t beat the great outdoors can you! A canvas home beneath the stars, bird song for your alarm clock and morning dew on your toes - the joys of being at one with nature. Then, on the other hand, the early-morning flip flop stumble to a communal toilet block, queuing up for a lukewarm shower, trying to get into a deflated air bed with only a torch for light and bickering about who forgot the tent pegs. And don’t get me started on the weather - camping is no fun in the rain! But forget about throwing a few poles and canvas into the back of the car. Luxurious camping, or glamping has has become a lot more sophisticated and is now all the rage, as my husband and I found out when I arrived at Felin Geri near Cardigan Bay. Set in 24 acres of stunning woodland in the idyllic Ceri Valley, the luxurious glamping venue, which is also home to a historic 16th century flour mill, boasts four state-of-the art safari tents, which have to be seen to be believed. When we arrive at the site, we are greeted by owners Alan and Jane, who offer us a drink from the bar before showing us to our tent. Their enthusiasm for the venture and friendly, helpful and approachable manner, really shows why guests come back to Felin Geri time after time. Our home for the weekend is the spectacular six-berth tent - Ceri, which is set in its own private paddock. The open planned safari tent is erected on a solid wooden platform, raised off the ground, and from the outside it really looks the part with an impressive hot tub, BBQ and outside picnic table and patio area. There is even swingball - which takes me back to my childhood days of summer holidays camping with my family. But the real surprise is when we unzip the tent to reveal a sumptuous, modern boudoir, filled with stylish interiors and detail. As well as a wooden dining table, there is a sofa

142 swansealife.co.uk

@LawsDx

and bean bags as well as a kitchen area, featuring a Welsh dresser, traditionally styled wood burning stove, which doubles up as an oven, a gas ring for boiling the kettle or cooking a quick snack and a sink/ area and full cooking facilities. The bedrooms are equally impressive. There is a separate king size double bedroom, twin bedded room and an impressive Scottish double cabin bed which certainly looks the part. Quality linen, duvets and towels are all included, ensuring that you don’t miss out on any home comforts. With a shower room and toilet located at the back of the tent luxury is guaranteed. No need to step outside in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning. The modern term “glamping” doesn’t really do justice to this experience - this is far better than many a luxury hotel we have stayed in - we were literally blown away by its charm and beauty. Despite the home comforts, you still feel as if you are sampling nature at its best. You can’t beat lying in a hot tub looking up at the stars, surrounded by mountains and forestry as the sun is going down, or wrapped up in a fleece blanket with a glass of wine on the balcony, engaging in conversation without any distraction talk about romantic! There are no televisions, laptops or phones ringing so it is pure relaxation. If you are desperate for Wi-Fi or fancy mixing with the other guests or locals, you can go head to Felin Geri Mill Cafe and Bar - the only place where there is internet access via free wi-fi on site. In each tent, there is a decorative wooden toy box full of board games and we managed to get in a a few games of Monopoly, something I haven’t done since I was a teenager. The tent is lit with battery lanterns and has interchangeable coloured rope lighting, so it couldn’t get any more cosy - perfect! The next morning, after a fantastic sleep, we took great delight in sparking up the fire to heat up the water tank to take a shower and wash our breakfast dishes. It is meant to take 30 minutes to heat

but it must have taken us more than an hour to get it to the right temperature. But we didn’t care, we were loving the novelty of it! Admittedly, we did have to drag ourselves out of the tent and explore the surrounding area. We experienced a food festival in the picturesque village of Newcastle Emlyn, about five minutes drive away, and enjoyed a bag of chips and a beer in picture-postcard Aberaeron with its Balamory-style painted houses and scenic harbour, forty minutes up the coast. The great thing about Felin Geri is that it is a perfect base for visiting a number of attractions on the west wales coast and for us, only an hour and a half drive from home. When it comes to food, the cafe serves meals throughout the day, whether it’s a cooked breakfast, light lunch or wood fired pizzas in the evening. There is also the Pantry where you can pick up all your essentials including your ice packs for your freezer boxes. On the Saturday evening we decided to take full advantage of eating outside our tent and as we didn’t feel like cooking. We ventured into the village for a takeaway Indian which we highly recommend. But we were not going to leave without trying a full breakfast at the cafe. We sat outside on the picnic table and basked in the glorious sunshine before taking a woodland walk around the riverbank and the site. There is so much to offer everybody at Felin Geri and it is a perfect retreat for couples, groups and families. Whether you are looking for a relaxing break away or an action-packed activity weekend, Felin Geri has it covered. New to the site is an eight birth safari tent and we are already looking at visiting again this time with all the family. We enjoyed so much, we did not want to leave! Alan and Jane have ambitious plans for the site and if our weekend was anything to go by, I know they are already on to a winner. Felin Geri | Cwmcou | Newcastle Emlyn | Ceredigion | SA38 9PA 01239 712856 | Felingeri.co.uk *Prices for a safari tent at Felin Geri start from £125 per night for a week’s booking in low season and £200 per night for a week’s booking in high season. swansealife.co.uk 143

■ WHAT IS IT?

Audi has been on something of a crusade in refreshing its top-end luxury machines of late. Last year saw a new A8 and A7 grace the market, and now there’s the new A6, the latest fresh face joining the German firm’s line-up. Much like its larger siblings, it’s more an evolution of the luxury saloon concept than a revolution, but there’s a lot to shout about. With the recent release of an updated BMW 5 Series and a now two-yearold Mercedes E-Class, Audi could be playing something of a game of catch up here. Is the A6 up to that task?

■ WHAT’S NEW?

As to be expected, there’s a lot of new stuff going on here - most noticeably in the looks department. The A6 takes on the bolder design language introduced on the A8, bringing a sleeker appearance along with a much wider grille and fresh headlights. Under the bonnet, the A6 is the first-in-class to offer mild-hybrid technology across all of its engine choices as standard, while new suspension options have been introduced in an effort to create a more agile car. As for technology, self-learning navigation aims to create an optimal route based on your driving history, while centre console-based physical controls for functions such as air conditioning and audio controls have been replaced with touchscreen, utilising haptic feedback.

■ WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?

At its launch, the A6 will be available with a choice of three engines - one petrol and three diesels, all of which utilise mild-hybrid technology. Our test car was fitted with the sole petrol option on offer. It’s a 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 335bhp and 500Nm of torque, here paired up with a seven-speed automatic gearbox that sends power through all four wheels. It’s capable of taking the A6 from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and can power the car on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Official figures for MPG and CO2 emissions have yet to be confirmed, however. It’s an extremely potent unit, delivering impressive and usable performance for a car weighing in at 1,825kg. Don’t expect supercar-levelling speed, but it’s more than enough for most needs while the gearbox pairs perfectly for a smooth experience under heavy acceleration or at a gentle cruise.

■ WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

Audi’s brought a lot of new technology in for the A6 in an effort to create a better driving experience, but the results vary. At its most comfortable when cruising for long distances, its plentiful power combines well with the

144 swansealife.co.uk

FIRST DRIVE:

AUDI A6

It features some innovative new tech - but does this affect the way the new Audi A6 drives? Ryan Hirons finds out. introduction of air suspension to create a relaxing ride when eating up the miles - aided by little in the way of wind noise. As for more spirited driving, the A6 is capable of doing it with ease - just don’t expect it to put a smile on your face. It handles well and doesn’t kick up a fuss when pushed hard, but the overall experience feels pretty uninvolving. It will undertake town driving with little fuss for a car of this size thanks to the addition of fourwheel steering, which results in a more agile machine at lower speeds.

■ HOW DOES IT LOOK?

Audi are the experts, if not the pioneers in Russian doll car design, each model taking after the last. The A6 is no exception, with the firm’s updated design language making a strong impact. That means a hugely wide grille upfront with bold headlights sitting at either side, while a sleeker overall look is seldom interrupted by creases in the bodywork. It’s a handsome thing to look at and has a presence of a car far bigger than it actually is. You’re likely to turn heads in a big Audi anyway, but the striking design could do that without the four rings up front.

■ WHAT’S IT LIKE INSIDE? As you should expect, it’s an incredibly plush place to be sat in. Premium materials feature right through the cabin, without a scratchy plastic surface in sight, and it all feels good to the touch. We also suspect it’ll be pretty durable long-term.

It’s not all good news inside though. Although the leather seats up front feel comfortable, they offer little in the way of support, meaning those of a smaller stature might be likely to slide about under harder cornering. The 8.6-inch touchscreen, that replaces physical controls in the centre console for functions such as air-conditioning and seat heating/ventilation, works well and responsively at a standstill, but can be difficult to use when travelling at speed.

■ WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE?

Full UK pricing has yet to be confirmed for the Audi A6, so value for money is difficult to judge at the moment, but we can say it’s going to be a seriously well-equipped package - if likely to be expensive once the options list is explored. Standard luxuries on the saloon include full LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, all-wheel drive, mild-hybrid technology and Audi’s MMI infotainment system displayed on an 10.1-inch touchscreen. As for safety assistance, there’s also pre-collision warning, parking sensors with a rearview camera and cruise control. Our S Line test machine also came with upgraded ‘Audi Matrix’ LED headlights and daytime running lights, 10mm lower suspension and a S Line styling package while heated/ventilated seating was also included. Again, UK pricing isn’t official, but we expect it to reach £60k+ in this specification.

■ VERDICT

The Audi A6 has all the hallmarks of a new class leader in the executive saloon segment. It offers a solid and potent range of engines, bags of technology and a comfortable experience wrapped in a handsome body. We’d like to have a more engaging experience in harder driving, along with some more physical buttons inside the car - but these are minor annoyances in an otherwise exceptional car. It’s hard to judge just how successful it will be without having exact pricing, but if marketed right, it could well leave competitors in its trail.Android Auto functionality, or a sunroof.

OF THE MOST UNDERRATED PERFORMANCE CARS The word ‘underrated’ and ‘performance cars’ don’t tend to go hand-in-hand. They’re the types of cars adored by petrolheads - and even those not actually that interested in cars - across the world. Here’s what we think are seven of the most underrated performance cars ever made...

Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R

Adding a Nissan Skyline of any kind to a list of ‘underrated performance cars’ might seem ludicrous, but bear with us. The R33 Skyline is something of an ugly duckling in the legendary Japanese machine’s family history. The R32 before it held all the motorsport glory, even earning the nickname ‘Godzilla’ as a result, while the succeeding R34 found fame as the face of video game franchise Gran Turismo, while also being an icon in the Fast & Furious film series. Meanwhile, relatively speaking, the R33 never found much fame, often disregarded as the ‘mid-life crisis’ for the Skyline, despite carrying over the magnificent RB26 engine from the R32 and wrapped it in an enhanced chassis and a lower drag body. However, a gentleman’s agreement between Japanese manufacturers to cap power output at 276bhp on all cars meant the R33 never filled its true potential. It remains a seriously capable machine in its own right, and with prices rising for all Skylines, now might be the time to invest in this sleeping beauty.

2

Porsche 718 Boxster

The Porsche 718 Boxster (and its Cayman sibling) were practically written off from the moment they were revealed. Former versions of the car utilised free-revving, naturally aspirated straight-six engines. Then came the 718 twins, which replaced that much-loved recipe with a turbocharged four-cylinder unit. ‘Sacrilege’, cried the purists, and that along with the car’s alreadyexistent reputation as a poor mans’ 911, doomed it from day one. In reality though, the 718 is one of the most capable machines on the market, offering a hard-to-match driving experience in a stylish and quality package. We wouldn’t say no to the return of a six-cylinder engine, though...

146 swansealife.co.uk

3

Ford Mustang EcoBoost

4

Audi S1

We’ll be the first to admit that a Ford Mustang isn’t really quite right if it doesn’t have a snarling V8 engine underneath the bonnet - but what can’t be overlooked is just how good the four-cylinder version is. Using the same 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the widelyadored Focus RS - here tweaked to suit the muscle car - the EcoBoost might be the thinking man’s Mustang, and certainly makes more sense on paper in the UK. It’s no slouch - with 286bhp and 440Nm of torque - and that power is more usable everyday than the 5.0-litre V8s, while also delivering markedly improved efficiency figures. If you can get past the lack of an eight-cylinder burble, the EcoBoost Mustang might just be a smart choice to make.

Amidst all Audi’s RS variants, the plucky ‘S’ models often get left behind. Perhaps the biggest victim of this is the S1. When people think about supermini-based hot hatches, they all go screaming to Ford, Renault and Mini for their renowned hatches, but the poor Audi S1 seems to end up being nearly entirely forgotten. Granted, it may be a bit long in the tooth now and overdue a good refresh, but even four years into its model run - or eight years if you think of when the A1 first reached showrooms - it still has a better, more luxurious and refined interior than some all-new hot hatches. And with 228bhp on tap from its peppy 2.0-litre petrol engine and Quattro all-wheel-drive, it puts in a unique position for a supermini hot hatch. Add in the fact it’s available as a three or five-door hatch and can get from 0-60mph in under six seconds, and it seems even stranger that the S1 gets unnoticed. Yes, it might be expensive new, but there are some cracking examples on the used market from as little as £15,000. Take that, Fiesta ST.

5

Hyundai Coupe

6

Volvo V60 Polestar

7

Vauxhall Astra VXR

The Hyundai Coupe never really set the world alight - and we won’t argue it should have done - but it’s definitely one many forget when it comes to compact sports coupes. We think a lot of this has to do with its looks. You’d be forgiven for taking a glance at the South Korean machine and expecting there to be a punchy turbocharged engine sending power to the rear wheels. In reality though, the most potent models featured a sluggish V6 engine developing a mere 162bhp - poor at the time, let alone by today’s standards. What few know, however, is that it’s a pretty capable machine in its own right, offering good driving dynamics and, thanks to little mainstream attention when it was on sale new, prices on the used market are pretty low, making this is a bit of a performance bargain.

It’s certainly impossible to miss the Volvo V60 Polestar - after all, despite being a sensible estate car, it’s fitted with massive 20-inch alloy wheels and painted in an eye-catching shade of bright blue. It’s far from the standard V60, having been breathed on by Volvo’s in-house performance arm, Polestar - it features one of the world’s most powerful four-cylinder engines as well as virtually limitless traction courtesy of four-wheel drive. So if the Polestar is that great, why don’t people buy them? It may be the car’s image. Though Volvos are becoming cooler and hip as time goes on, the old V60 has a certain whiff of antiques dealer about it even in Polestar Blue.

The Astra’s abilities are only underrated by some of the population - for many, fast Vauxhalls are near-perfect, and those people won’t need any persuading. Others may need coaxing past the car’s almost comically ‘chavvy’ image or require reassuring that the legendary torque-steer and, let’s say, difficult handling won’t be an issue on the road. All this is true, and while the Astra VXR is nowhere near as poised as rivals such as the Golf GTI, it’s incredibly fast, surprisingly decent to live with, and - importantly - an absolute bargain on the used market. Being unpopular has its plus points when it comes to buying used.

interview

Winging it! The One Show presenter chats to Ella Walker about her debut book, Winging It, which charts her experiences of becoming a parent in her late-Thirties.

A

lex Jones’ description of what happens when you have a baby is pretty blunt. “It’s like a bomb going off,” she declares, before adding wryly, “in a brilliant way.”

The One Show presenter, best known for interviewing celebs live on telly every weeknight, alongside co-host Matt Baker, became a mum for the first time last January, aged 39. Now 41, she says: “I’d got myself together in terms of career, I know where I am, and then a baby comes. It leaves you in this new-fangled situation where you don’t really know where to start,” she adds, remembering the sensation of her world being thoroughly scrambled in the wake of pregnancy. While lots of new mums are trying to piece together some semblance of sleep and get to grips with breastfeeding, Jones also spent the first chunk of her son Teddy’s life writing down everything she was going through. The result is Winging It!, her first - “and last!” - book. Broken into three portions, it tackles life before the birth, after it, and then what happens to the rest of your world once you’ve just about got to grips with being responsible for a tiny human. Jones felt there just wasn’t enough information about fertility and pregnancy out there for would-be parents in her and her insurance broker husband Charlie’s age-bracket (pushing 40). In 2016, she made a documentary for BBC One called Fertility & Me, and she says the research involved helped inspire her book. “I wasn’t sure how much I believed all the headlines, about how at 35 your fertility falls off a cliff,” says Jones. “I do still think it’s very much on a case by case basis, everybody’s body is different, and some people

150 swansealife.co.uk

who are in their Twenties struggle to get pregnant - it’s not something that’s just confined to people who are older.” However, during filming, a scientist explained to her how eggs deteriorate as a woman ages, and while doing a form of IVF, showed her the moment they introduce the sperm, via injection, to an egg. “In this case, they injected an egg from a 36-year-old woman, and the whole thing just crumbled,” Jones recalls. “That was the biggest wake-up call to me, that that could be the case. That was the image that stayed with me and made us definitely think, ‘We need to crack on with this if we’re serious about having a family’.” Luckily, they didn’t have any problems conceiving Teddy. “It was very straightforward. But for a lot of friends, unfortunately, that’s not been the case. I thought it was important to open up that conversation,” says Jones.

That conversation plays out in the book, with Jones also looking at how a baby affects your relationship, how difficult she found motherhood to begin with, and what it’s like - just as you’re hitting your career stride - to be a woman and have to “biologically take your foot off the gas, take a step back and actually have the baby”. “At the heart of the book is a lot of honesty,” says Ammanford-born Jones, who has presented The One Show since 2010, and is particularly frank about the decisions she had to make around maternity leave and finding the right time to get back on the BBC’s green sofa. “I have a big respect for the job I do, and what comes with having respect for the job you do is a fear of losing it,” she says. “I love my job, and sometimes I think women find it hard to admit they want to go back to work because they like it. “People assume you should be saying, ‘Well, I want to stay at home because I love my baby’, and of course that is the case - I absolutely adore Ted - but I do like my job as well. “There’s nothing wrong with saying, ‘I’ve worked hard to get to this point and yes, I want a child, but I also want a career’, I think that’s fine,” she adds powerfully. “Men never have to struggle to say that, I don’t think women should either.” She admits that “finding the balance is difficult”, but notes: “It’s not just about liking your job, it’s about necessity; lots of us have to go back because it’s necessary for us to earn a living and for lots of families, it does take two wages to bring up a child.”

they can make comments they probably wouldn’t otherwise, in the same way they feel they can touch your bump - you wouldn’t normally walk up to someone in the street and touch their stomach, that would just be plain weird, but for some reason when you’re pregnant, they feel they can.” Back at work full-time, and having raised almost £800,000 for Sport Relief with her Mother Of All Challenges recently - five days of biking, hiking and open water swimming - her tactic for dealing with unasked-for guidance, no matter the situation is: “Ignore, polite smile, move on.” After all, pushiness isn’t solely reserved for pregnant people. “When you get a boyfriend, people ask, ‘When are you going to get engaged?’ When you’re engaged it’s, ‘When are you going to get married?’ Then it’s, ‘When are you going to have your first child?’, and now it’s, ‘When are you going to have your second?!’ “People are always looking for that next thing, speeding through life,” says Jones, sounding slightly incredulous. “There’s so much expectation on people, and sometimes that pressure is quite hard to deal with.”

In the end, Jones went back to work three months after Teddy was born. “There were some concerns, mostly from my mum and friends, who said, ‘Are you sure, Al, that you’re ready to go back, it seems quite soon?’ And of course, before you have a baby you don’t know how soon that is. I’d made promises before really knowing how I would feel.” Fortunately, she had a “super supportive” boss, who suggested she come back part-time to begin with. “It worked really well, but I’m not scared to say I was worried about taking maternity leave - it’s scary taking time out.” While Jones didn’t suffer any pressure on the coming-back-to-work front, she says being pregnant, whether inside or outside the studio, did involve an outpouring of advice and opinions - whether they were always welcome or not. Sure, it was great to have Tom Hanks recommend her hypnobirthing books (“Oh gosh, he was so nice, one of the nicest guests we’ve ever had”), and Jamie Oliver tell her to stash some takeout menus for ordering from at the hospital (“The guests all gave their two pennies’ worth, which was lovely”), there was no escaping the fact that “everyone has an opinion” when there’s a baby involved. “Everybody feels they can give you bits of advice and tips, and most of them, to be fair, are great,” Jones notes, “but they do feel

WHAT’S ON

SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS!

Long-awaited Pixar sequels, nail-biting action movies and the all-female Ocean’s 8 - plenty of exciting blockbusters are arriving in cinemas over the next couple of months. So, get the popcorn ready - here are the silver-screen epics you won’t want to miss.

THE INCREDIBLES 2 When’s it out?: July 13

What can we expect?: It’s the Disney Pixar film we have all been waiting for, right? Fourteen years since the The Incredibles, the action begins right where we left it - Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson) has taken a step back from his role as Mr Incredible to look after the kids, including superpowerful baby Jack-Jack. But don’t worry, his sassy wife Helen, aka Elastigirl, (voiced by Holly Hunter) is carrying on with saving the world. This may look like a kids film, but it will be totally acceptable for adults to enjoy every minute too.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT When's it out?: July 26

OCEAN’S 8

When’s it out?: Out Now!

What can we expect?: Girl power. There’s been serious excitement surrounding this all-female reboot of the Ocean’s franchise - and rightly so. The fun heist flick follows Sandra Bullock’s Debbie Ocean (that’s the sister of George Clooney’s character from the original films) upon her release from jail. She’s soon up to no good again, thanks to the help of a team of criminal masterminds, who happen to be played by some of Hollywood’s biggest names - Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Helena Bonham Carter. Oh, and superstar Rihanna is in it too.

MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN When's it out?: July 20

What can we expect?: Abba fans, get tuning those vocal chords - a decade since the comedy musical Mamma Mia, it's time for a sequel. Songs this time round include Angel Eyes, I Wonder and When I Kissed The Teacher, the scenery is just as spectacular (they filmed in Croatia this time) and Cher even makes an appearance. Meanwhile, much of the original cast are back, including Amanda Seyfried as a now-pregnant Sophie learning about her mother's past, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and, of course, Meryl Streep. What's not to love? 152 swansealife.co.uk

What can we expect?: A whole load of crazy stunts. You'll remember Tom Cruise broke his ankle jumping across buildings while filming scenes for this movie - the sixth in the series in London last year, and we've also seen clips of him dangling in the air from a helicopter over New Zealand. Other than the fact the past comes back to haunt Cruise's character, Agent Ethan Hunt, as he and his IMF team try to prevent nuclear terrorism, we don't know much about the storyline. But one thing's for sure - 22 years since the first Mission: Impossible film, Cruise still gets pulses racing.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: SUMMER VACATION When's it out?: July 27

What can we expect?: An-all star cast lend their voices to this family comedy - we're talking Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez and Steve Buscemi. This time, the animation revolves around the monsters embarking a cruise ship for a nice, summer holiday. What could possibly go wrong? Well, when Mavis (Gomez) realises Drac (Sandler) has fallen for the ship's mysterious captain, all hell breaks loose turns out all of monsterkind are at risk. Yikes.

THE MEG

When's it out?: August 10

What can we expect?: A shark. A very, very big shark. Jason Statham plays a rescue diver tasked with saving the crew on-board a deepsea submersible which has been attacked by a 75-foot-long prehistoric creature, known as the Megalodon, which was thought to be extinct - but most definitely isn't. Warning: if Jaws left you with nightmares, The Meg sounds like it's going to be even scarier. Orange Is The New Black's Ruby Rose also stars.

THE EQUALIZER 2

When's it out?: August 17

What can we expect?: Denzel Washington is back as the crime-fighting Robert McCall, in a sequel to the 2014 box-office hit which saw him take down a notorious Russian gang. This time, the fight gets personal, following the death of an old friend. And, yet again, retired CIA operative McCall won't give up until his mission to bring the bad guys down is completed. This is what you call non-stop action.

Swansea businessman Eddie Whitney keeps us up to date with his charity work and social diary...

arry’s Fund is a charity born out of tragedy. They say that you should never outlive your children, but when Harry passed away he was just a boy. This makes it all the more remarkable that his family made it their mission to help and support others in similar situations. This was not a night of sadness and tears, it was a night to rejoice in the memory of a wonderful and spirited little boy. The evening started with a rendition of a Greatest Showman classic, This is Me. The Performance Factory performed the number with great style and beautiful harmonies.

H

When Christian Patterson came to the podium we all expected a story of grief and loss, but even through the pain and never ending sorrow there shines a light so bright that you can almost see Harry looking down from the video screen and laughing long and hard at the wonderful stories only a parent can tell about their child. We were treated to a short video of Harry at home “helping” with some home baking. If you know Christian, Michelle, Dylan or for that matter anyone involved with Harry’s Fund you will know that even through a life marred by disaster,

if you all stick together and talk to each other you can overcome and even triumph for yourself and in this case hundreds of others. Once the wonderful meal was over in my favourite hotel The Marriott, we were treated to a masterclass in the art of comedy and observation. Maxwell Boyce ‘Max’ came to the stage and for nearly half an hour took us all on a wonderful journey around the world hardly pausing for breath. This was one of those nights that you can say “I was there”. From rugby to Poundland and from New Zealand to Pontardawe. Max is not only a Welsh legend but a true comedy legend, it was an honour to be in the room for this wonderful night of “Posh Frocks and Big C***’s as Max insisted on calling the evening. With a charity auction raising much needed funds, the generous people of Swansea came out in force to support these wonderful people doing great things in the community. Raffle prizes drawn and auction over, we danced the night away to the rocking sounds of Fonz and the Poet. Please check out the website and support the PING campaign. ASK S A R A WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SEPARATED PARENTS CAN’T AGREE ON TAKING THE CHILDREN ON HOLIDAY

Sara Plant, Partner and Head of Family Law at Peter Lynn & Partners Solicitors talks this month about holiday arrangements between parents who are separated

In many cases, divorce has a devastating impact on a family, especially where children are involved. One of the significant challenges for separated parents can be agreeing on the arrangements for the children during the summer. Holidays, especially when one parent wants to take the children abroad, can result in tense and emotional discussions, sadly sometimes in front of the children, following which one parent is inevitably disappointed. It is important to bear in mind that generally, summer holidays are there to benefit the children, rather than the parents. Unfortunately, often one or both parents lose focus and turn discussions into a purely mathematical exercise during which they try to ensure they take exactly their 50% entitlement for each of the summer holidays. This might not work on a practical level due to work commitments and can lead to the children toing and froing between their parents or missing out on specific events which one family has planned. Further, it may not work on an emotional level where dependant on the children’s ages, consideration should be given to their wishes and feelings. What are our top tips? 1. Plan Ahead - Always tell the other party in advance what your proposals are. You want to avoid a situation where both parents book holidays at the same time, and there are often other competing factors to be taken into account and co-ordinated such as grandparents, step-families, weddings, and time off work to be arranged. The whole issue can easily become a logistical minefield with the children themselves at the centre so discuss holidays as far in advance as you can. 2. Holiday Details The next question is what information you will provide to the other party about the holiday. As most parents will have parental responsibility for their children, they have a right to know where the children are. As an absolute minimum, you should tell the other parent where you are going, where you will be staying and how they can contact you in an emergency. The times and dates of when you are travelling are essential also.

3. Communication While on Holiday One question we often get asked is: “how will I know the children are safe?” Ideally, if you are concerned about holiday arrangements and the children’s safety, you will speak to the other parent in advance about what worries you have so that some safeguards can be put in place. In the same breath, the parent who is taking the children away needs to be able to have quality time with the children. Having an absent parent continually ringing them is likely to make the children anxious, possibly homesick and raise tensions between parents either during the holiday or upon the return home which could spoil the trip completely. Perhaps agree a time and date when the children can speak, but limit this to once or twice a week. What happens when parents can’t agree on the holiday arrangements? For instance, perhaps one parent wants to take the child on holiday abroad and the other parent has the passports and won’t agree. In this case, you can apply for what is called a specific issue order. This is an order of the court dealing with a specific set of facts and limited to one narrow point. The ultimate question that the court has to decide is what is in the best interests of the children. If you and your ex-partner are not able to agree on matters yourselves, we have many experienced lawyers at Peter Lynn and Partners who specialise in this area of law. We also refer many clients to mediators to facilitate discussions between parents. In our experience, the more amicable discussions can remain, the more likely parents will remain focused on what is best for the children, rather than on winning the battle they believe they have with their ex-partner surrounding holiday contact. For more information or to arrange a free initial meeting to discuss this or similar matters, call 01792 450010 or email Advice@plandp.co.uk

For expert advice on this or similar matters, call 01792 450010 or email Advice@plandp.co.uk to arrange a confidential meeting.

A key worker is assigned to each resident which enables clients and their families to build a relationship with their carer. All our care is personalised and individual with a focus on being a home from home. With discreet support from the staff team we aim to encourage our residents to remain as independent as possible. Whatever level of care you or your loved one needs, we can provide it at Ocean Living and Hawthorn Court. “The staff at Hawthorn Court are looking after my father so very well. They are caring and kind. I am very glad that my father is a resident at Hawthorn Court. He always looks so clean and content. They take away the worry that I have that he is being cared for well and that he is safe.” MS (Daughter of Resident): May 2017 “Very approachable staff - nothing too much. Very welcoming. One staff member was great with Nan - concerns over Nan on Sat, called out of hours, she was fantastic. Always asked if we want a cuppa and cake when we call to visit. No concerns with Nan being on her own whilst in work. Would consider Nan to stay if the need arises again. Nan has enjoyed her stay.” Nicola W (Granddaughter of Resident) May 2018 “Being the first time I have experienced a care home, I must say I have been impressed. On arriving a day prior to my mum being resident for respite only, I can honestly say the staff were very friendly and accommodating. They were very attentive to my mum’s needs and assured me that she would be taken care of. I have visited mum most days whilst she has been in residence and I have seen the care and attention that my mum required during her rest. Mum was very comfortable and if I can say happy. I would not hesitate to use Hawthorn Court again if the need requires it.” Karen D (Daughter of Resident) May 2018.
