Banna Tesfay HEY SOUTHWEST! Hello Southwest! I'm honored to be serving you this year as your International Trustee! We have a lot of awesome stuff planned for this year in CKI, so I hope we'll get to work together more during your terms! International Committees Congrats to all of our Southwest Committee chairs and secretaries for International Committees! Southwest, stay on the lookout for committee listings at the end of the week. Thank you to everyone who submitted applications this year; I'm rooting for all my ponies here in Southwest! Membership Update Center Closure Remember, from August 14th - September 5th, the Membership Update Center will be closed. At this time you won't be able to edit your rosters or do your club MRF, but we'll set a new deadline once it;s back up for clubs to submit MRFs for the month! A bonus is that you can go back and edit past MRFs, so you don't have to worry about it going away! Subregion and Chill We'll be hosting some Sub B online socials this year to promote engagement with each other! I know how hard it is for us to attend each other's events, so hopefully, this will give us a chance to hang out about life and chat and play some games! We're going to aim for every two weeks, and alternating between webinars (hosted by me, or other members in our subregion on topics that are fun/serious/weird, etc) and games that can be multiplayer and over the internet! So if you have any ideas for games or webinars you'd like to see, or maybe you'd like to host one, let me know! Subregion B Facebook Page Don't forget to join our Subregion Facebook page to stay up to date with everyone going on in CKI and with our sister districts! https://www.facebook.com/groups/4014104150/

gratitude

As servant leaders, expressing our gratitude is probably one of the most important parts of our daily activities. However, this action is not always easy to accomplish! Many times, we forget about expressing our gratitude because we aren’t in the practice of doing so. Noting that, the following ways will help you become more accustomed to practicing gratitude: · Write thank you notes · Practice non-verbal gratitude · Learn the love languages of your teammates and peers · Replace your “I’m sorry” statements with “thank you” statements · Intentionally perform random acts of kindness · Review your personal reasons for gratitude before sleep every night

SUBREGION B

superstars In early August, 2 members from Rocky Mountain District CKI were able to attend the Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Convention. They had a wonderful time meeting Kiwanians and strengthening the KFamily relations in their district!

On August 4-5, CNH held their second annual DPDC (District Professional Development Conference). Held in conjunction with CNH Kiwanis D-Con, CNH CKI’ers were able to connect professionally with Kiwanians and work closely to gather career advice and continue growing as servant leaders!

Now, we are raising money as a District to see members “Brave the Shave” at DCon 2018! This year, I hope that we as a district can raise $5,000 (or more!) for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and I will be shaving my head if we reach that goal as part of a Brave the Shave event.

15 A NOTE FROM YOUR

International President We have a BIG year ahead!

Circle K International is in for an exciting year! This year Circle K is starting our five year journey with the WASH program. WASH stands for Water Sanitation and Hygiene, a serious problem across the world. Circle K is going to raise $240,000 to go towards WASH efforts in Haiti in partnership with UNICEF. This first year we are looking to spread awareness as well as get the jump on fundraising! The WASH program is an incredible effort that all of Circle K International should be excited to get in contact with. The Kiwanis Family will also be switching from having a Kiwanis Family Month to having Celebration Weeks for each individual branch of our organization. This will give every branch an opportunity to be in the spotlight for a week this year. We look forward to seeing how each individual club highlights our counterparts in the Kiwanis Family. In case you thought this year could not get any more exciting, this year will conclude with our International Convention in Chicago, IL. To those of you who have never been to Chicago, it is an incredible destination with tons to do for everyone. Go to a baseball game at historic Wrigley Field, have a slice of deep dish pizza, or go to one of the many world class museums in the city. Whether you are a foodie, sports junkie, or a history buff, there is sure to be something to do for everyone. This year Circle K International is going to accomplish big things, and we are going to conclude with an even bigger celebration! I look forward to seeing everything the Southwest District can accomplish this year and look forward to seeing you all in Chicago.

AUBREY AND BANNA’S YEARS OF MISTAKES BY BANNA TESFAY So, me and Aubrey have always been friends, but I think the solidifying thing that brought us together was our love of Youtubers, specifically Troye Sivan and Connor Franta. Our whole crusade of fangirling together started when Troye Sivan released his second EP before his album, and had released a tour. Unfortunately, it didn't have a date in Phoenix, so I jokingly posted that I would go to his concert in LA because I wanted to see him that bad. Mind you, I had NO idea Aubrey was also a fan of his music. Well, Aubrey had the same idea, because she texted me saying she bought two tickets to his LA show, and asked if I wanted to go with her. So, we made a weekend trip of it! It was the first long distance trip we had done together, and if there was any testament to our relationship and how crazy it is, halfway into the trip, we ran out of gas, and had to pull into this abandoned town in the middle of nowhere, where we were so sure we were going to die. But, it was so funny! We finally got to LA, went to the beach, ate some great food, stayed with our International Trustee at the time, Jenny Park! And when we went to the concert, we waited in line all day, and got about third row in the pit! And met some really awesome people in the process! After that, it became our thing. The second time we went, I randomly hear he was playing a small show in Phoenix on the radio last June, and I immediately called Aubrey screaming, saying we had to go. And we did, hardcore. It was the night before CKIx in Toronto, and we still rallied on. This concert was honestly the funniest, because Aubrey made me wait with her after the show, and we saw Troye Sivan get into his car and I think I saw her almost pass out.

17 AUBREY AND BANNA’S YEARS OF MISTAKES CONTINUED BECAUSE ONE PAGE JUST WASN’T ENOUGH... The third time we went was in October, and this one we went all out. Like, ALL OUT. We bought the VIP package, which is what we always promised ourselves we were going to do. And it was literally a dream come true. And even when we thought we were done, Connor Franta released an art tour for his book, and like the idiots we are, we bought VIP tickets and drove to San Diego the night before final exams. All of these experiences were so worth it. I think the reason we keep doing this is, for one, we're both huge fangirls, and it's so fun to indulge in experiences you can only get once in lifetime. But it's also a huge bonding experience for us. We get to do weird, spontaneous trips and have these memories together, where we've definitely learned a lot about the other. I love Aubrey, and I love that we have this stupid, weird, amazing fangirl cult thing that we get to do together, and will probably keep doing for a while, knowing us.

UNM| LUKE KACHELMEIER Our District Fundraising Chair Luke Kachelmeier already has our sock fundraiser up and running! After his appointment to the position, Luke immediately jumped in and began designing socks for us to sell. He was successful in creating these in time for Kiwanis DCon, and has already sold over 50 pairs! Overall, Luke is doing a killer job and Southwest is incredibly proud of his efforts.
