Hey Ponies! Can you believe we are already halfway through the academic year? I sure can’t! It’s insane to think about how the time has just flown by. Now, it’s just 2 weeks until the end of the year! As the holiday season approaches, this is the perfect time for service! Most cities host holiday events that your club can volunteer at. Or, you can request donations to St. Baldricks’ or another charity in lieu of gifts this season. Either way, please share any holiday happenings with me so I can feature them in future bulletins! I look forward to seeing all the rad things you and your club accomplish. Happy holidays!

4 Hey Southwest!

I hope your semester ended well and that you're enjoying your time off and getting plenty of rest! Our first ever District Large Scale Service Project is coming up on January 20th! Join members from all over the district to do service to the community of Show Low, AZ and make crafts for pediatric oncology patients! Confirmed partners include Pet Allies, Phoenix Children's Hospital, Cardon Children's Hospital, and UNM Children's Hospital. The event is free except for an optional $5 lunch fee. Keep your eyes out for our Facebook event! DCON is also coming up! Whether you're hoping to run for office, learn more about our district, or just have fun, you won't want to miss this retro-boardwalk themed event! We will be having a fellowship night, workshops, service projects, and more. DCON will be held in Phoenix, AZ from February 23-25th. Registration is $97. Keep your eyes out for our Facebook event! St. Baldrick's is our district project this year! The St. Baldrick's Foundation raises funds for research into treatments for childhood cancers, and we have our very own fundraising page for them. Please reach out to your clubs and communities to get donations. You can donate directly to the page here: https://www.stbaldricks.org/events/SWCKI . We are hoping to raise $5,000 by DCON and haven't raised much yet, so be sure to share the event around! Interested in receiving scholarship money? The Kiwanis Children’s Fund Scholarship applications are live! There are four scholarships open to CKI students, all due on March 15. For general information about scholarships disbursed by the Kiwanis Children’s Fund, including who to contact with questions and award notification dates, visit the FAQ page. Want to learn about DLSSP or running for office? Just want to chat? The next governor’s fireside chat will be Tuesday, December 19th at 7:30 pm AZ time! It will be held via Google Hangouts at the following link https://hangouts.google.com/hangouts/_/asu.edu/firesidechat . Come to share ideas, ask questions, or just chat with me! I am looking forward to seeing you there! Feel free to contact me at any time for any reason! Whether you have questions, comments, ideas, or just want to say hi, I'm only a short message away!

Stay Spicy, Southwest! Laura Belmont

Banna Tesfay HEY SOUTHWEST!

Happy holiday season ! I hope finals haven’t overwhelmed you all and that you are enjoying the fruits of your laborthree weeks of free laundry from your parents and no more exams to stress over. As you take some time to be around your loved ones, please remember another CKI storm that looms this time of year: burnout season. I know how easy it is to feel stressed about the work CKI asks of us during this time of you, but I encourage you to, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day, dedicate a bit of your time to the work you do for CKI. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to make the strives and advancements to humankind that we see everyday. To help you get a head start on some CKI work, here are some International Updates: Spark! Nominations The Leadership Academy program has been redeveloped to focus on emerging and developing leaders. The new program is called Spark! and it is designed as a four-day leadership experience to help ignite CKI members' leadership potential. As this is a new pilot program, there will only be a limited number of students selected to participate and we are currently accepting nominations. Anyone may nominate a CKI member. Ideal participants will be individuals who are interested in developing their leadership skills, show strong potential for future impact in CKI, and are starting to think about what their next steps are to achieve their goals. Ideal participants are also those who have not yet had major leadership roles within CKI (at the district or international levels). Please note, Spark! is not an officer training conference and is not designed to prepare an individual for any specific officer role. Spark! will take place May 31-June 3, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois. Students selected to participate will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and a $200 registration fee (will cover the cost of housing accommodations, meals, and materials). Please complete this nomination for each individual you wish to be considered. Nominations must be submitted by January 15, 2018 at Noon EST for consideration. It is our hope to select and notify participants by early March 2018. CKIx18 Chicago Registration for CKIx will open early next year, so be on the lookout! Now is a great time for collaborating with your clubs, and asking Kiwanis Clubs and Districts for help with sponsorship/funding! I expect to see a lot more Southwest sunshines in Chicago this year! For more information as time goes on, check out www.circlek.org/ckix. That’s all I have. As always, feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, or just want to chat!

K-FAMILY KATCH

On Wednesday, December 13 the Kiwanis Club of Litchfield Park volunteered to make omelets for people who serve our country. They helped provide food for people either finishing up the third shift or just starting the first shift of the day. Way to go

LIVE LOVE LEAD

leadership beyond meetings How do you practice your leadership? Is It by running a club meeting, recording meeting minutes, or keeping track of dues for your club? While all of these are most definitely behaviors of a club leader, there are so many more ways to engage with leadership! For instance, organizing a volunteer opportunity for your club, reaching out to Kiwanians, and offering advice to new club members are all ways to step up as a leader as well. So for the next semester challenger yourself to practice several types of leadership.

St. Baldrick’s foundation works with leading pediatric oncologists to fund research towards curing childhood cancer. The 2017-2018 SWD CKI Board selected this as our District Project as it is a new CKI Service Project and is special to Governor Laura Belmont. Now, we are raising money as a District to see members “Brave the Shave” at DCon 2018! This year, I hope that we as a district can raise $5,000 (or more!) for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and I will be shaving my head if we reach that goal as part of a Brave the Shave event.
