a word from your

Hey Ponies! I hope all of you have had a fantastic summer! It’s crazy to think that in just over a month, the school year will be back in full swing and we will be ready to march forward in service! Anyway, this issue of Southwest Sun includes updates from CKIx, an introduction to your new Subregion B Trustee, and lots of other good information! As always, though, I hope to receive article submissions/proposals from you all! If your club has recently hosted an event, connected with the K-Family, or done something else completely awesome, feel free to reach out to me via social media or through email. You can always contact me at AnikaLynn247@live.com.

4 Hey Southwest! I hope your summer has been restful, fun, and enjoyable! This year's CKIx was July 5th-9th in San Antonio, Texas, and it was a blast! Our members had the opportunity to perform a full day of service, meet and connect with people from all of our organization, attend workshops, and elect our next international board. On that note, I would like to extend a congratulations to the entire international board, but especially our trustee (and immediate past district governor), Banna Tesfay! At our convention, our newest service initiative with UNCEF was unveiled: the WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) project. The goal of the WASH project is to increase access to clean and safe water, as well as spread sanitation/hygiene practices. Keep an eye out for more information about WASH and how you can get involved! Also, keep an eye out for international committee applications! They are an incredible opportunity, and I hope to see all of you apply. If you have any questions about international committees, feel free to contact me! Finally, be sure to mark your calendars for CKIx 2018! It will be held in Chicago, Illinois from July 4th-8th, and we can't wait to see you there! An amazing chance to bond with our K-Family is just around the corner! The Southwest District Kiwanis Convention is August 4th-6th at the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel. Even if you can't attend the entire convention, be sure to check out the comedy show 7 pm on August 3rd benefitting the Southwest District Kiwanis Foundation. Kiwanis DCON registration for CKI members is $79 with a coupon code. Find out more about the convention here: http://swdkiwanis.org/(S(q35qmn55ulnrshjfeswr3y55))/Page/35621 . If you are interested in attending, please e-mail me at lbelmon1@asu.edu . Another great opportunity that same weekend is the California Nevada Hawaii District Professional Development Conference. Meet members of your subregion while learning skills to help you in your career! It will be at the Nugget Casino Resort, and registration will be $50. To learn more, visit: http:// www.cnhcirclek.org/district-professional-development-conference-2017/ . If you are interested in attending, please e-mail at lbelmon1@asu.edu . Want to talk about your ideas for the district or for the upcoming year? Have any questions about international committees? Just want to chat? The next governor’s fireside chat will be Sunday, July 30th at 7:30 pm AZ time! It will be held via Google Hangouts at the following link https:// hangouts.google.com/hangouts/_/asu.edu/firesidechat . Come to share ideas, ask questions, or just chat with me! I am looking forward to seeing you there!

Banna Tesfay HEY SOUTHWEST! Though most of you already know who I am and a lot about me, I'll give you a small recap. My name is Banna Tesfay, and I go to Northern Arizona University studying marketing and design. I'm from Surprise, Arizona, and I have five siblings. I also spend way more time than I should playing video games. And I am extremely excited to be serving as your International Trustee. Make no mistake, I want this year to be centered on connecting more of you as members to International as smoothly and efficiently as I can. Our growth and development as an organization rests in the hands of the members, not me, and I plan to do anything and everything I can to provide you with anything to help you do that, and to help Governor Laura in doing that for Southwest. You'll be seeing and hearing more from me in due time, but if you have any questions for me, please let me know! I'll be attending Board Training in Indy in two weeks, and International Committee applications should be coming out soon, which I'll be sure to share with you all. So, keep in mind if you'd like to serve on any, and if you have any questions or just want to talk to past committee members about their experiences, let me know! This year, Southwest will truly be the SouthBEST.

-Banna Tesfay

K-FAMILY KATCH

From June 5-9, Key Club and CKI took over San Antonio, TX, for their respective international conventions! Southwest Key Club was well represented and now has two members serving on the Key Club Board of Trustees! These members are Past Governor, Alisa Nguyen, and Past LTG, Saul Ontiveros!

Right after Key Club and CKI’s International Conventions, Southwest District Kiwanians traveled to Paris, France for the Kiwanis International Convention! Here, the new Kiwanis International Board will be elected, SWD Kiwanians will get to connect with others from across the world, and Kiwanis will help prepare for another year of service!

LIVE LOVE LEAD

Motivation vs.

7

momentum

A lot of people rely on motivation to get started doing something. Unfortunately, though, that often isn’t enough. You see, if you rely on motivation to make you start doing something, you may be waiting forever!

Instead, building your momentum can help you remain motivated to reach your goals. Once you initiate your momentum, it is easier to build up and strengthen. For example, it is a lot easier to continue working on a given task than it is to start doing so! As such, whether you’re trying to write some CKI emails, study for an exam, or get yourself in the mood for a 7 a.m. service project, try relying on momentum, instead of motivation, to keep going!

SUBREGION B

superstars During CKIx, the Rocky Mountain District Administrator, Jan Brown Reed, stood in for Southwest Admin, Bob Carson, who was unable to attend the convention. We that Jan Brown Reed for all of her support and her willingness to help Southwest out. Thanks!

At CKIx2017, CNH won a bunch of great awards! In addition to earning recognition as a Distinguished District, CNH produced a Distinguished Governor, Secretary, Treasurer, LTG, and Administrator. They also had several Distinguished Chairpersons, both on the district and international level and an array of other awards. Way to go, CNH!

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

During Circle K International Convention in early July, District Secretary Cody Little’s team volunteered at the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park for their day of service. It was a great way to impact the local community.

At CKIx, Team Leader and District Governor Laura Belmont led her team in volunteering at the San Antonio Food Bank. There, her team had a very successful #CKIx17 Day of Service!

Better World Books is one of CKI’s Service Partners. They resell used books online and donate one book to someone in need for every book that is purchased from their website. CKI clubs can support Better World Books by hosting book drives and then earning rewards for our organization’s other nonprofit partners!

St. Baldrick’s foundation works with leading pediatric oncologists to fund research towards curing childhood cancer. The 2017-2018 SWD CKI Board selected this as our District Project as it is a new CKI Service Project and is special to Governor Laura Belmont. Now, we are raising money as a District to see members “Brave the Shave” at DCon 2018! This year, I hope that we as a district can raise $5,000 (or more!) for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and I will be shaving my head if we reach that goal as part of a Brave the Shave event.

11 CKI’s New Service Initiative

WATER. SANITATION. HYGIENE. Similar to the Eliminate Project before it, WASH it CKI’s new service initiative with UNICEF. This initiate aims to improve the water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions for millions of children across the globe, to reduce their risk of contracting preventable diseases.

On July 5-9, CKI members from all over the world gathered in San Antonio, Texas for the 2017 International Convention! Here, members were able to elect the new International Board of Officers, vote on Bylaw amendments, attend fun and educational workshops, and work with their team for a day of service! Overall, it was a great event. Check out the next few pages for convention updates and highlights!

Highlights CKIx was an incredible experience! The best part is always making new friends. The friendships you make while at CKIx will last a lifetime. I now know that if I’m ever in California, Aruba, or Kansas, I have a friend that could show me around. -Justin Crofoot, 2017-2018 CKI President

CKIx was an incredible experience. For me, the highlights are always the day of service and getting to meet people. The organizations chosen for the day of service are cool, and getting to meet everyone at CKIx is like magic. You are so used to your individual club and district, but at CKIx you learn the true beauty of CKI: that while we are all unique, we are connected through our passion and our familial love. -Laura Belmont, 2017-2018 SWD Governor

I think my favorite part of CKIx was how easy it was to make friends and bond with the members of other districts. On the first day I just asked if anyone arrived around when I did and if they’d want to get tacos with me. That one suggestion ended up making me a lot of new friends and I couldn’t believe it. Everyone was so friendly! -Cody Little, 2017-2018 SWD Secretary

ANIKA’S PROS AND CONS FOR PARLI PRO Parliamentary procedure. In my experience, you either love it or hate it. I happen to fall somewhere in the middle. You see, I definitely don’t enjoy having ask for permission to use the bathroom in the middle of a board meeting (I was over asking for permission in Kindergarten, I definitely don’t want to do it as a 20 year old adult). In fact, I wouldn’t say I really like any part of Parli Pro. That being said, I do understand its value. Despite Parli Pro rules being really annoying, they do help keep meetings in check. I remember a Key Club Icon I attended a few years ago, in which there was a motion to completely dismiss Parli Pro. It was crazy. We spent so much time arguing about that, it extended our meeting significantly. Given that, as tedious and annoying as Parli Pro may be, it is still better to have some sort of governing rules than nothing at all.

17

UNM| SARA AL-MIDANY Our District Treasurer Sara really stepped it up during CKIx, for which she served as a Team Leader! Not only was she incredibly successful in leading a group of servant leaders, but she also did a great job of making lots of new friends!

NAU | BANNA TESFAY Immediate Past District Governor Banna Tesfay really shined at International Convention. In addition to working on the CKIx planning committee, Banna made lots of new friends and was formally elected as the new Subregion B Trustee. Way to go!
