GOVERNOR

I hope you are all having an amazing summer! I know the summer months can be slow for CKI but we still have some amazing things happening. At CKIx, we elected a new International Board, 5 Southwest District members are heading off to leadership academy at the end of this month, and in less than a week Andrea Madrigal and I will have the amazing opportunity to go to the Kiwanis European Youth Camp here in the Czech Republic! Pretty cool right? If you are interested in serving the Southwest district, we have several committees and task forces looking for members and we still have a couple of vacancies on the District Board. Let me know if you are interested :) When the next Southwest Sun comes out, I will be back in the USA! I cannot wait to be reunited with my K-family and all you amazing CKI members in Southwest District. Keep Shining, Ava Red

THE NEXT 100 YEARS

“What if, we made ‘impossible’, possible? What if we made ‘what if ’s’ happen?” Let me be the first to say that Kiwanis really does know how to throw a great birthday party. Two weeks ago, I got to attend the Kiwanis’ 100th Annual International Convention, celebrating 100 Years of serving the children of the world by combing all of the K-Family conventions into one, right into the sole of Indiana. To be clear, I was an intern for Key Club International, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t get to wiggle my way into CKI events, as well. But Andrea Madrigal got to witness this convention from start to finish! And, of course, I still got to see the Kiwanis Opening and Closing sessions. “CKIx was just an amazing experience,” she tells me. “It allows you to grow individually and as a leader. From doing a large scale service project to running down the street in the rain to make it to the session. CKIx was amazing and allowed me to spend a couple of days celebrating Kiwanis as they celebrated their 100th birthday.” I guess the first, and greatest part of convention was watching Kathy Le address the ENTIRE Kiwanis International Convention in her Glinda the Good Witch costume! Nothing in the world has ever been that precious. Ever. She got to talk about how proud she was of Circle K, and our growth and achievements from the past 100 years.

A cool thing I got to do was attend the International Council meeting (and did a pretty darn good job pretending to be Ava) along with Mike and our sister district governors. Though, in retrospect, it might not have been the coolest event, but nonetheless, I was excited. We changed some bylaws, approved some wordings, but just making sure Southwest had a voice in what happens in our organization was blissful enough. As I didn’t get to attend the Large Scale Service project, but Andrea did. I did, however, get to watch some of the Subregion B caucusing on one of the mornings. The level of sophistication and poise from the members is really outstanding, and I felt like I was learning and becoming personal with the candidates way more than I could with the large rooms with Key Club. And I’m very happy to say that Jenny Park, our new Subregion trustee, is going to be just as amazing as Mike was to us! In all, there is a certain barrier you cross over when you go to International conventions. Though this was my first time “going” to a CKI International Convention, it’s not my first K-Family International Convention. There’s a whole different experience getting to meet people outside your district who are just as enthusiastic and energetic about service, and I can’t put into words how amazing it is. It’s like you are getting a great huge, warm hug. You don’t have to make friends, everyone already is your friend. And you get to truly realize that you are apart of something huge and important to mankind. With every ounce of knowledge I have, I encourage so many of you to start planning now on attending International Convention in Toronto with me next year, joined again with the Kiwanis International Convention! So get your passports, people! 4

A Last Goodbye from...

MIKE ZHOU Hello Southwest District! It’s been an honor serving as your trustee for this past year and I’ve really enjoyed meeting all of you at your Fall Rally & DCON. Southwest members have been some of the most inviting and kind members that I have met all year. Being at your Fall Rally and initially meeting and bonding with you all was so much fun, but attending your DCON and having many people greeting me was even better. I want to give a special shoutout to Katie & Ava because I’ve gotten to work more closely with them this past year. You are both so inspiration and I think you both have brought so much passion to your district boards. To Katie, Thank you for staying in contact with me for the majority of my term and being so friendly. To Ava, I know you are going to amazing things for Southwest and it’s been great to see you grow as a leader this past year. I’ve seen so much passion at these district events and I can only imagine what each of you brings to your own clubs. I still have a year left in college and I hope in this upcoming year, I get to visit you all a couple more times! Definitely greet your new trustee, Jenny Park, and give her the same welcome that you gave me! She has been so passionate about this organization in the past and I know that she is going to do an amazing job. If you need anything, please reach out to her because she is amazing! Mike Zhou 2014-2015 Subregion B Trustee

And a First Hello to...

JENNY PARK Hi there, Sizzlin’ Southwest District! My name is Jenny Park from the Circle K club at the University of California, Riverside and I am honored to be serving as your International Trustee this next year. As a trustee I hope to provide your district in any way that I can, whether it be voicing your opinions to the International Board or providing you with the most up-to-date resources in maintaining your club’s needs. With the end of CKIx15 this past month, I am excited to say that the International board has released International committee applications open to all members as well as opened the revamped Subregion facebook group, both of which a district board member can help you find. Feel free to get to know me on Facebook, Twitter, or even Instagram (@jehneepawk); I am always down to meet new friends! I hope summer is treating you all well and I can’t wait to meet your b-e-a-u-tiful faces at Fall Rally on October 17-18! Jenny Park 2015-2016 Subregion B Trustee

ELIMINATE CHALLENGE

GOVERNOR AVA HAS A CHALLENGE! Do you see these beautiful locks of hair right here? Here’s hoping they’ll be a cute bob by DCON, because Ava has a mission for this district! If we can raise $500 or more collectivley for the Eliminate Project come District Convention, Governor Ava will cut off and donate her hair! That’s right, CUT IT ALL OFF. So get to thinking up great fundraising ideas, because you don’t want to miss this! 7
