a word from your
Hey Ponies! I cannot believe that this is the last bulletin I will ever create for our District, but I can say that I am able to reflect back on my term with happiness and pride for all that we accomplished together. Over the past 12 months, I have used the Southwest Sun to promote our District events and celebrate an absolutely amazing CKI year. Now, I cannot wait to see the direction the District goes in the future, but I am confident that it will continue to grow and excel. It has truly been an honor to serve all of you—thank you for such a remarkable year. Stay rad, Southwest.

4 Hey Southwest!
I hope you enjoyed (or are enjoying) your spring break! I loved getting to see you all at DCON. Thank you so much to those of you who came out to the event; it was a fantastic weekend! Want to keep up your district involvement? Apply to be on the next district board! Applications are now open for the other LtG position as well as district chairs here: https://goo.gl/forms/vw57AnWgKxAL1VKt2 . They will be due on April 1st. We want to see a great application turn out, so don't hesitate to apply and share it with other members! If you have any questions, reach out to Governor-elect Sara Al-Midany at saraalmid@unm.edu. Interested in receiving scholarship money? The Southwest District scholarship deadlines were extended to March 31st! Two scholarships at $2,000 each will be awarded. Check out the application here: https://swcki.org/?page_id=193 . Currently, the international service committee is hard at work promoting the WASH project through March Water Madness and the 6k for 6k challenge! CKI has partnered with UNICEF to raise $240,000 over 5 years for water and sanitation initiatives in Haiti. The 6k for 6k challenge is meant to be in solidarity with those who must walk 6k each day to access water that might not be clean or safe; people called out must walk/run a 6k, donate, or preferably both, and then pass it on. I'm calling on each of you to participate and pass it on! Interested in getting involved beyond the 6k challenge? I would be more than happy to help or answer any questions you might have. If you have any pictures from fundraisers you have done, please post them in the March Water Madness Facebook event with the hashtag WashUsMakeaDifference. CKIx is coming up July 4th-8th and will be held in Chicago! CKIx is our international convention and day of service, and it is one of the most amazing events you can attend. If you have financial concerns, or in general are unsure if you want to go, feel free to reach out to me!! I love CKIx and will do anything I can to help you get there too. Early bird registration is available until May 1 at 12 pm EDT at $250, and increases to $300 after that point. Registration will no longer be available after June 1st at 12 pm EDT. Register here: http://circlek.org/ckix Another event to check out is KEY Club's DCON! It will be April 13-15th at the San Marcos Crowne Plaza in Chandler, AZ. Housing can be coordinated. If you are interested in attending, please contact me ASAP. I can't believe this is my final word from the governor. It has been an absolute honor and privilege to get to serve as your governor this year. We as a district have achieved and accomplished so much over the course of the year, and it's all because of your hard work and dedication. I am truly humbled to know and serve with you all, and I couldn't be more proud of you and to call Southwest my home. Never forget your impact or your worth. If you ever need anything at all, don't be afraid to reach out to me! While my term as governor may be coming to a close, my time in Southwest and CKI is not, so I'll definitely still be around to see you all. Thank you all for an incredible year, and for making such an impact on the community, this organization, and my own life.
Stay Spicy, Southwest! Laura Belmont
5 Hey Southwest! My name is Sara AlMidany and I am honored to say that I will be serving as your 2018-2019 District Governor. I am so excited to serve you all and serve our district along side our great elected board. This is my second year at the University of New Mexico and I am majoring in Emergency Medical Service and hoping to have a career in the Medical Field. I am originally from Damascus, Syria. I moved to Fort Worth, Texas four years ago where I joined key club, and I finally joined the Southwest District my freshman year of college. I first served as a club treasurer, then as a district treasurer and soon as district governor.
The K-Family means a lot to me, but Circle K is one to sand out. It is very rare to find young people who are passionate about service and about making a difference in the world. I am so glad to be a part of a great organization and to be in the best district out there. I am looking forward to meeting more CKI members and I am thrilled for a year full of Leadership, Service and fellowship.
Stay Spicy, Southwest! Sara AlMidany

Earlier this month, Southwest District Kiwanians gathered in New Mexico for one of the two midyear conferences Southwest is hosting this year. This conference was a great way to connect with the KFamily, learn about new stuff, and celebrate a year of service.
This coming weekend, the San Pedro Kiwanis Club will be hosting their second annual 5K Fun Run/ Walk to support local Key Clubbers attending District and International events. If you aren’t in SV, but still want to participate, sign up for the virtual run!
LIVE LOVE LEAD
SAYING
goodbye
Every leader eventually faces one of the hardest parts of their terms: retirement. So as all of us step down from our leadership roles for the 2017-2018 CKI year, we have to figure out where to go next. If you ask our District Administrator, Bob Carson, he’ll tell you this: we aren’t being retired from our terms, but instead are being promoted to Chief Resource Officers. So, keep this in mind as you move forward in the K-Family and ask new leaders step up to fill the roles we leave behind.

SUBREGION B
superstars On March 9th through 11th, Rocky Mountain District CKI hosted their annual District Convention. This event included having fun at a trampoline park, performing service, and connecting with the K-Family. During their convention, RMD CKI also elected their 2018-2019 officers, including Governor-Elect Kaori!
Later this month, CaliforniaNevada-Hawaii CKIers will meet up in the City of Angels for their annual District Convention. As with all DCons, this event will be a fun way for the large district to connect with each other and other members of the Kiwanis Family!

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT
For the final service spotlight of the 2017-2018 CKI year, I want to call attention to an International Initiative: March Water Madness. Through this event, CKI members all over the world are either walking 6k or donating $6 to stand in solidarity with those who have to walk 6k everyday just to access water. The International President Justin, Governor Laura, and many all have already joined the madness, so now I challenge every single person reading this bulletin to complete a 6k or donate $6!

DONATE TO
St. Baldrick’s foundation works with leading pediatric oncologists to fund research towards curing childhood cancer. The 2017-2018 Southwest District of CKI raised over $5,000 in support of this cause! To stand in solidarity with cancer patients, Selena, Michael, Cody, and Laura all Braved the Shave at our District Convention!
This year, I hope that we as a district can raise $5,000 (or more!) for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and I will be shaving my head if we reach that goal as part of a Brave the Shave event.
11 CKI’s New Service Initiative
WATER. SANITATION. HYGIENE. Similar to the Eliminate Project before it, WASH it CKI’s new service initiative with UNICEF. This initiate aims to improve the water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions for millions of children across the globe, to reduce their risk of contracting preventable diseases.

On February 23-25, members from all over the district gathered in Mesa, Arizona for our annual District Convention for a weekend filled with fellowship, service, and leadership! Some of the events from this weekend included service with Save the Family, the K-Family luncheon, a Brave the Shave event, and electing our 2018-2019 officers. It was definitely a weekend to remember!

DISTRICT BOARD| Sara AlMidany As many of you know, Sara AlMidany was recently elected as the 2018-2019 District Governor. This past year, she served as the District Treasurer and District Service CoChair, in addition to serving as a member of the International Service Committee. Overall, Sara did a great job over the past year and we cannot wait to see where she leads the district in the year to come!
