a word from your

Hey Ponies! And just like that October has come and gone. A busy month for our organization, October saw the passing of CKI Week, Kiwanis One Day, Trick or Treat for UNICEF, and Fall Rally! Looking back, it’s absolutely crazy to think about how fast it all went. If you’re still stuck in the past, or if you want to spread word of your club’s awesome events, please reach out to me at AnikaLynn247@live.com. I’d love to spotlight awesome members, events, and clubs on our social media pages and in our bulletins. Until next time, stay rad Southwest!

4 Hey Southwest! Hopefully your semester is wrapping up well and that you're taking time to relax before finals! Our first district large scale service project (DLSSP) is on January 20th, 2018! It will be in the Show Low area, and the event is completely free (except an optional $5 fee for lunch). We'll be volunteering at local non-profits and coming together for a lunch, projects for pediatric oncology patients, and some fellowship! Register on our website today! Registration for our district convention (DCON) will be going live at the beginning of December, so keep an eye out for more details! Our St. Baldrick's fundraising page is now live!! Please reach out to your clubs and communities to get donations. You can donate directly to the page here: https://www.stbaldricks.org/events/SWCKI . We are hoping to raise $5,000 by DCON and haven't raised any yet, so be sure to share the event around! November also marks Prematurity Awareness Month, and November 17th marks World Prematurity Day! Check out ways to get involved here . You can also get in contact with your local March of Dimes representative here. If you'd like to do a workshop about prematurity and March of Dimes, check out this link . If you're interested in getting involved with March of Dimes beyond just this month, they are looking for applications for the Student Leadership Corp. Check out the criteria to apply! Applications must be submitted no later than November 30. Nominations are now being accepted for Spark! Spark! is a four-day leadership experience similar to Leadership Academy. It will be from May 31-June 3, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois. Registration is $200 (covering meals, housing, and materials) and travel is separate. Ideal participants are also those who have not yet had major leadership roles within CKI (at the district or international levels). Nominate an individual at this link by January 15, 2018 at Noon EST for consideration. Have questions about the DLSSP or DCON? The next governor’s fireside chat will be Sunday, November 26th at 7:30 pm AZ time! It will be held via Google Hangouts at the following link https://hangouts.google.com/ hangouts/_/asu.edu/firesidechat . Come to share ideas, ask questions, or just chat with me! I am looking forward to seeing you there! Feel free to contact me at any time for any reason! Whether you have questions, comments, ideas, or just want to say hi, I'm only a short message away!

Stay Spicy, Southwest! Laura Belmont

K-FAMILY KATCH

In early November, some of our very own CKI members were able to join Key Club at Camp Sky Y as facilitators of SWD Key Club’s Fall Rally. This annual event serves as a leadership training opportunity for young leaders. At this event, Key Clubbers are able to attend workshops, grow as people, and have fun with friends!

The Florida District Aktion club recently held their Training and Leadership Conference! This event saw more than 150 Kiwanians and SLP members in attendance and was a great opportunity for growth, leadership training, service, and fun!

LIVE LOVE LEAD

7

leadership in your club We often throw around the term “leadership” as a promotional tool to recruit new CKI members. But does it really mean when we say this? Are we only using “leadership” in context of a line on your resume? If so, consider changing the way you frame leadership as a recruiting tool. Instead of only promoting resume building (which every other club on campus will be doing), emphasize the scale of our organization, continuous opportunities for involvement, and incredible network that CKI members experience. This should help you recruit new members for your clubs!

SUBREGION B

superstars Last year, Rocky Mountain District revolutionized the meaning of their District LSSP. Now, instead of having all clubs gather in a centralized location, they have a themed project where clubs compete to have the most innovative and impactful service project. Last year, Colorado School of Mines came out victorious, after collecting over 280 bottles of water to distribute to the homeless! We look forward to seeing what happens this year!

California-Nevada-Hawaii’s annual Fall Training Conference took place November 3-5 in Sonora, CA. This yearly event is incredibly popular with CNH members as it is a great time to meet new people, grow as a leader, and truly engage with the 3 tenets of CKI.

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

On October 27 GCU CKI members were able to volunteer at Kids Day at the fair! For this event, members teamed up with special needs students to enjoy a fun day at the Arizona State Fair!

NAU CKI traveled to New Mexico to help with the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. It was our first time traveling as a club to a new state and we are so grateful that we were able to support Kiwanis and UNM CKI.

November is prematurity awareness month, with prematurity awareness day being November 17. Noting that, this is the perfect time of year for your club to organize a project to support March of Dimes!

St. Baldrick’s foundation works with leading pediatric oncologists to fund research towards curing childhood cancer. The 2017-2018 SWD CKI Board selected this as our District Project as it is a new CKI Service Project and is special to Governor Laura Belmont. Now, we are raising money as a District to see members “Brave the Shave” at DCon 2018! This year, I hope that we as a district can raise $5,000 (or more!) for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and I will be shaving my head if we reach that goal as part of a Brave the Shave event.

11 CKI’s New Service Initiative

WATER. SANITATION. HYGIENE. Similar to the Eliminate Project before it, WASH it CKI’s new service initiative with UNICEF. This initiate aims to improve the water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions for millions of children across the globe, to reduce their risk of contracting preventable diseases.

12

A well-loved Kiwanis event, Trick or Treat for UNICEF is an annual Halloween event where CKI members seek donations to support projects through UNICEF. Although the past several years of funding went toward the Eliminate project, funds raised by CKI members this year were to support the new WASH initiative.

Along with many other CKI clubs across the nation, U of A CKI went trick or treating for UNICEF on Halloween night. This event was a smashing success as members were able to have fun while also raising around $100 to support WASH.

13

recap

For the first ever CKI Week, members from all across our organization teamed up to host events themed around service, leadership, and fellowship! The week concluded with Kiwanis One Day. For K1D, UA CKI teamed up with a local Key Club to support Ben’s Bells, a Tucson nonprofit designed to promote kindness. Meanwhile, ASU CKI volunteered at a Kiwanis Halloween Carnival!

CKI Week 2017 took place October 23-28, ending with Kiwanis One Day.

16 On October 20-22 CKI members from all across the Southwest gathered at Kamp Kiwanis for our annual Fall Rally! Joined by CKI International President Justin Crofoot, members were able to participate in the ropes course, enjoy fun fellowship games, and engage in various service projects across the camp! Overall, the event was a smashing success and everyone who was able to attend had an amazing time! Being Fall Rally Chair was such an amazing experience! The committee worked so hard on the event and everything turned out beyond our expectations. Some personal highlights were building the blanket forts, singing at the campfire in our pajamas, and the murder mystery dinner. But seeing old friends, meeting new members, and hanging out with our IP Justin Crofoot takes the cake. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did and I look forward to next year’s Fall Rally! -Elizabeth Kwan, Fall Rally Chair
