a word from your

Hey Ponies! By now most (if not all) of us have returned to campus life, and hopefully, CKI! Noting that, I am more excited than ever to see all of the awesome service projects you engage with over the coming semester! On that note, I am always seeking ideas for service projects, K-Family events, interclubs, and outstanding club members to spotlight on our social media or in our monthly bulletin. If you ever have an idea you’d like to share, please reach out! You can email me at AnikaLynn247@live.com or add me on Facebook (Anika Lynn) and message me there! I hope to hear from you soon!

Plus, we will hosting international president Justin Crofoot at the event! Don't miss out on your chance to attend! Early bird registration ends October 6th, and full price registration goes until the event. I hope to see you all there! Also coming up on the horizon is CKI week! This year, CKI will be having a celebration week that highlights both our service partners/preferred charities AND our lovely Kiwanis Family! Be sure to start planning out your service projects now, as I hope to see each and every club engaging with CKI week! If you want help coming up with an idea for your club, feel free to reach out! Banna Tesfay HEY SOUTHWEST!

It's been another eventful month serving you all. First, I'd like to thank you for being patient with us and Kiwanis International as we transitioned the Membership Update Center. But thankfully, it's now up and ready to go! So clubs can go in and update this last month's MRF, and even go back and update past months' information. WASH Circle K is proud to be working with UNICEF again to push for clean and safe drinking water to the people of Haiti! Circle K has a five-year pledge with UNICEF to assist in the WASH project! Want to more about WASH? We have more information on our website, at www.circlek.org/wash, including a new video! And if you'd like any resources to use for clubs, we have a drive that was given to our district board that you can request from! Trick Or Treat for UNICEF TOT for UNICEF is back and better than ever! This year, and for the next few years, CKI will donate all TOT funds to the WASH project! Clubs that participated last year will automatically be mailed a kit of 25 boxes in early September. The list of these clubs can be found here. New clubs or clubs needing more than 25 boxes can pre-order up to 200 boxes (8 kits) through this link. Boxes will be shipped once they are available in early September. Subregion Updates The next event is, of course, SW CKI Fall Rally! Invitations will be sent out to other districts to come attend our event, so let your CKI friends know! In the meantime, some great events coming up are three CNH ones: Krazy Competition North and South, in Northern and Southern California. And Fall Training Conference, November 3rd-5th! I'm attending FTC this year, so chat with me about attending! All events needs to be approved by both districts' administrators, so be sure to check out their website for event info to plan accordingly. I hope all of you are getting into the right gears this beginning of the semester. If you ever need to chat, distress, or vent, I am always here for you! Just find me on any social media, or send me an email, and we can chat. And don't forget to add the Subregion B page on Facebook!

-Banna Tesfay

K-FAMILY KATCH

The Kiwanis de Amigos club from Tucson, AZ hosted their annual Rattlesnake Run in early September. This event, which U of A CKI volunteered at, is an annual cross country event for middle schoolers. It was a smashing success as all of the teams had fun, exhibited strong sportsmanship, and enjoyed the run!

A proud member of the Kiwanis Family, Aktion club is the only existing service club for adults with disabilities. This group attracts members from various community groups and organizations and has over 12,000 members worldwide. All of these members strive to fulfill Aktion club’s motto, “where development has no disability.”

LIVE LOVE LEAD

LEADER

ship

Leadership is like a boat in many ways. First, you can’t really man a ship alone. In the same way, leadership isn’t a single-person activity. Leaders, especially servant leaders, should always work alongside their team, or crew, for the betterment of the ship as a whole. In this sense, the leader may be the captain of the ship and steer it’s direction, but a leader alone cannot help the ship successfully sail its course. Keep this in mind as we continue our journey of leadership, and be sure to always collaborate with your crew when sailing through the seas of service!

SUBREGION B

superstars On September 1-3, Rocky Mountain District rounded up their members for their Fall Retreat. This retreat, which took place in Estes Park, Colorado, consisted of a great weekend of fellowship, service, and leadership! Not only that, but RMD was the first district in Sub B to host their fall retreat!

In early August, CNH Circle K released the first issue of the 57th Volume of The Sunburst! This issue included updates on clubs within the district, a recap of Spring Training Conference, and a farewell letter from Sub B Trustee Jennifer Que. The link to their newsletter can be found here: http://www.cnhcirclek.org/ news/sunburst-volume-57-issue-1/. We look forward to future issues!

Building

14

Recruitment season is upon us and while club building may be a daunting task, it is very rewarding and will allow your club to reach new heights!

1. SOCIALIZE Make sure that you are starting conversations with potential members— become their friends and make them feel welcome! Learn important facts about them and host unofficial socials (like a club lunch date) to make them feel welcome. Don’t just be a leader, be a friend too.

2. KNOW HOW TO TALK Students will go through 5 phases of decision when picking an organization. Know how to promote the club based on all 5 of these! 1. They will consider YOU 2. The student will consider the ORGANIZATION 3. They will consider the BENEFITS 4. The student will consider the PRICE 5. They will consider TIMELINE

3. HAVE FUN AND BE POSITIVE If you aren’t having a good time, then your members won’t have a good time either. Make CKI as fun as can be! You can even plan events where non-members can participate. If you don’t keep a positive attitude, then club building will be even harder. If you take anything out of this, it should be that you should personalize and socialize. Make CKI your own and make it a place where people can come together to serve, lead, and make new friends. If people see the effort you are making, you are bound to see new members eager to start their journey with the largest student-run service organization in the world!

16 A NOTE FROM YOUR

International Vice- President Hello, Southwest! If I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you, my name is Eric Yan and I am serving as your International President this year. A little about myself, I am a senior studying finance and economics at the University of Texas at Austin. I enjoy photography and doing outdoor activities. One of my main duties this year is to oversee the committees. We have some great leaders and committee members this year, including your very own Elizabeth Quinlan, Anika Lynn, and Laura Belmont! This year, we are really putting a focus on our committees because they are an essential part of our organization. We want to be able to collaborate more and publish more resources so we can better serve you! There are so many exciting things to look forward to this year. Here are just a few. This year, we are going to officially kick off our new partnership with UNICEF called WASH. WASH is a program that will allow us to bring Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene to our preselected region in Haiti. In addition, CKI Celebration Week is October 22nd-28th and we are planning lots of exciting things for you all so be on the lookout! This year, I would like to feature more member generated content from members like you. So, if you have a project, a member, or something that your club does really well (recruiting, getting involved with K-fam counterparts) that you would like me to feature, feel free to shoot me an email! If you ever need anything, feel free to email me or check out the video updates on the Circle K International Facebook page!

CODY’S MURDER -SOLVING DOG BITES District Secretary Cody Little is currently working on his honors thesis to pursue forensic anthropology. His specific area of interest is taphonomy, which is the processes that affect a body between time of death and time of discovery. Examples include fires, weather, animals, and human interference. His primary question for the thesis is whether the damage to bones is from natural causes or from when the person was killed. Essentially, this means are the bones damaged due to bite marks from animal scavengers or are they from human interference. To answer this question, Cody is creating a profile to distinguish between the two issues. Working with volunteer dogs and an ASU forensic anthropologist, he is reviewing the bone damage caused by dogs to the bone damage caused by tools, knives, or other instruments on sample bones. Overall, Cody is doing a great job in pursuing his passion. Who knows, maybe Southwest has the future Temperance Brennan on our District Board! Way to go, Cody!
