On October 4, my husband left the cross country meet at Fauquier High School to collect our daughter for her regular horse lesson out 211 at 6:15. Only this day, her lesson was pushed back to 6:30, making him run 15 minutes later than usual. It was 昀椀fteen minutes that made every bit of difference that day. At 6:08, as many readers may already know, four cars were waiting at the westbound light at 211 and 229 when a Dodge Durango speeding in that same direction crashed into the last car setting off a chain reaction. Two life 昀氀ights were called; one Culpeper County woman was killed. I shudder to think of how many days I have sat at that light at 6:08 on a Wednesday, with my beautiful, young daughter beside me, taking her to a horse lesson. The next morning, I thanked her instructor for moving the lesson and, potentially, sparing her life as well as the life of my husband. Rather than be in the accident that day, they sat in the traf昀椀c, frustrated to be stuck there and ultimately turning around and missing the lesson altogether. When reality set in, we realized that those feelings of frustration were far better than many other feelings we could have been having that day. As we embark on this season of gratitude, it’s important to remember that where we are at any given moment is where we are meant to be. Whether running early, running late, stuck in traf昀椀c, or resting at home with a book, we should all take a minute to be grateful for that moment and all the ones that preceded it, as we never truly know what the next moment holds. My heart goes out to the family of the woman who was killed for their unimaginable loss. In this issue, we meet James and Amanda Frederickson. James is a retired disabled veteran who, along with his wife, is raising their young daughter and expecting another baby in the New Year. James and Amanda share their story and what they are thankful for this holiday season. We also meet Jon Esse, just one of the volunteers with Hero’s Bridge, a local nonpro昀椀t that serves veterans ages 65 and older. Jon may be a retired veteran, but like James, he too has never stopped serving. We hope that our readers enjoy this issue, have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and remember to focus on all the reasons to be grateful this holiday season.

THE FREDERICKSON FAMILY Supports Military Service
By Aimée O'Grady | Photography by The Little Photo Shop

ames was only a high school freshman in northeastern Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. Located in the middle of the three tragedies that day, the events had a tremendous impact on him. “After 9/11, I knew I wanted to serve my country. So, after graduation, I joined the Army Reserve,” he said. He was 昀椀rst sent to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic training and then to Fort Huachuca, Arizona for advanced individual training. “After training, I came back and started college. In 2008, I went on my 昀椀rst of three deployments,” said James. He was sent to Camp Cropper, a theater internment facility, near Baghdad, Iraq. James ran intelligence operations to support a military police battalion that oversaw thousands of detainees, including high-value detainees.

He stayed in the Middle East for one year before returning home in January 2009. “It sounds odd, but I enjoyed my deployment and the lifelong bonds I made there. Being away from family was very hard, but I was ful昀椀lling something that I felt was very important,” he said. After graduating from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, he volunteered to deploy again. This time to Bagram, Afghanistan. “I was assigned to Task Force 2010 to detect and mitigate fraud, waste, and abuse of Afghan contractors.” He remained there for six months before coming home to decompress. Two months later, he volunteered to pack up his belongings again for his third deployment. “I was sent back to Bagram and attached to the 10th Mountain

The 10th Mountain Division has the distinction of being the most deployed conventional unit of the War on Terror. While deployed, James reached out to someone he was friends with on Facebook. “James and I grew up in the same town and knew of each other,” said Amanda. “I played basketball with her brother and her father was my coach,” added James. The two started up a friendship, 昀椀nding ways to communicate almost every day no matter the circumstances. When James returned home in August 2014, they began dating and married in 2017. Amanda, a student-athlete for most of her academic career, graduated from West Virginia University with a broadcast journalism degree. She went on to become a sports reporter for the Mountaineers in Morgantown, West Virginia. She later headed to a local TV station in Florida where she covered the Jacksonville Jaguars, and then returned north to become a morning news anchor for Central Pennsylvania. “My father was always into sports. Since I was in a small school, I had a lot of opportunities to play different sports. I played volleyball, basketball, softball, and track,” she said. After ten years in journalism, she switched to pharmaceutical sales. Meanwhile, James, now a discharged disabled veteran, continued his pursuit of a career in law enforcement, which he began after his 2014 deployment. “After serving my country, I wanted to serve my community,” he said. He moved to Virginia where he attended the Northern Virginia

In 2015, Amanda changed pharmaceutical sales territories and joined James in Virginia. When an opportunity in women’s health became available, she accepted it. Today, she provides medical IUD training for OBGYNs in Northern Virginia and Maryland. These are 昀椀tting doctors for her to meet with, as she is expecting the couple’s second child in January. Until 2018, the couple lived in Arlington and enjoyed running local 5K, 10K, and 10-mile races. They then decided to exchange their urban landscape for a rural lifestyle. By now, James had also left law enforcement. “I miss it, but it just didn’t provide a reasonable worklife balance for me. I was missing out on too many family functions,” he said. Today, he works an equally ful昀椀lling role solving problems for a safer world with The MITRE Corporation. He looks forward to volunteering with the Puller Veterans Care Center which is still under construction in Vint Hill. In 2021, the couple welcomed their daughter, Mora, and moved to Vint Hill in 2022. They have enjoyed getting to know their new community. “We spent a lot of time at the Larry Weeks Pool this summer and we like going for bike rides,” said Amanda. The couple returns home each Thanksgiving and hosts family during Christmas. “We love visiting Old Town Warrenton and Middleburg,” said Amanda. When James isn’t building out his home gym, the couple enjoys experiencing new and unique local restaurants in the DMV area. They plan to visit the Inn at Little Washington now that they live closer to it. With the holidays upon them and a new baby on the way, James and Amanda are content spending time with Mora and their friends who have become more like their local family.

The Crucial Role of Hydration in Optimal Body Functioning By Jennifer Ely
ater is a fundamental component of life, and its importance in maintaining a healthy body cannot be overstated. Hydration is the process of providing our bodies with enough water to carry out its countless functions ef昀椀ciently. From regulating body temperature to supporting organ function and promoting overall well-being, adequate hydration is paramount. In this article, we will explore the critical reasons why hydration is so important to the body.
W
Regulating Body Temperature Water acts as a coolant for our bodies, especially during physical activity or exposure to hot weather. Through sweating, we release heat and cool down. Suf昀椀cient hydration ensures an ef昀椀cient cooling system, preventing heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Supporting Organ Function Water plays a vital role in the proper functioning of our organs. It aids in digestion, circulation, and absorption of essential nutrients. Adequate hydration helps maintain optimal kidney function, facilitating the removal of waste products and toxins from the body.
Additionally, water lubricates joints, protecting them from damage and reducing the risk of injuries. Enhancing Cognitive Function Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining proper brain function. Dehydration can impair cognitive abilities such as memory, focus, and alertness. By drinking enough water, we support our brain's ability to transmit information ef昀椀ciently, promoting mental clarity and productivity. Promoting Physical Performance Whether you're an athlete or enjoy physical activities, hydration is key to achieving peak performance. Water helps transport oxygen to muscles, lubricates joints, and provides the necessary nutrients for energy production. Dehydration leads to reduced endurance, decreased strength, and slower recovery times. Aiding Digestion and Weight Management Water is essential for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste. Proper hydration supports a healthy digestive system, preventing issues like constipation

Boosting Skin Health Hydration plays a signi昀椀cant role in maintaining healthy, radiant skin. Water nourishes skin cells, improves elasticity, and helps prevent dryness and premature aging. By staying adequately hydrated, we promote a vibrant complexion and reduce the risk of skin problems. Conclusion: Hydration is not just about quenching thirst; it is a fundamental necessity for overall health and wellbeing. From regulating body temperature to supporting organ function, promoting cognitive abilities, and enhancing physical performance, water is the elixir of life. Remember to drink water regularly throughout the day, even when you don't feel thirsty, to ensure your body remains adequately hydrated. Why is Skin Skin pH Important? By Natalie S.
H
ere is a crash course on everything you need to know about Skin pH + why it matters.
that is acidic and above it alkaline, so the skin’s natural pH is mildly acidic.
We have all heard the words "pH balanced" and instinctively know it's important but let's break down why, shall we? What is the skin’s pH? It's all about balance, just like everything in life! The skin’s pH maintains the balance of acidity and alkalinity that protects us from germs, the elements, and toxic substances while keeping us keeping us hydrated and storing nutrients and minerals. The optimal pH level of skin on most of our face and body lies between 4.7 and 5.75. A pH of 7 (that of pure water) is considered neutral. Anything below
An acidic pH is optimal for proper cell turnover, hydration, and skin barrier function. Skin is protected by the acid mantle, which is a thin 昀椀lm on its surface composed of lipids from oil glands and amino acids from sweat that serves as a barrier, and a breakdown in this barrier leaves skin susceptible to in昀氀ammatory conditions, dehydration, and accelerated aging. An acidic pH helps keep your skin balanced, healthy, and radiant. Why does skin’s pH matter? pH has a huge impact on our skin’s barrier function, moisture retention, and our microorganism (bacteria)
environment, just like our gut health. If the skin’s pH rises into the alkaline range, its natural balance is disturbed. Remember, it's all about balance! This could lead to compromising the skin's barrier function, water loss from the skin, and overgrowth of acnecausing bacteria. Some external factors that can stress the skin include: • Changes in temperature and humidity • Dirt and pollution • Chemical exposure • Washing too frequently

The Centre Performing Arts Company Presents The Nutcracker in Warrenton, December 2 and 3
n 1816, E.T.A. Hoffman wrote a fantastical story about a world of pleasures and imagination called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Pyotr Tchaikovsky set Hoffman’s story to music and The Nutcracker ballet was performed in Russia for the 昀椀rst time in 1892. Since the ballet was brought to the United States in the twentieth century, The Nutcracker has become an annual tradition for millions of families during the holiday season. The Centre Company would like to invite you to enjoy the 11th performance of this beautiful ballet right in our own town. Featuring principal dancers, Devon Teuscher and Cory Stearns, of American Ballet Theatre in New York City, along with other professionals and talented local dancers, this is a performance not to be missed! The Nutcracker opens with a comedic scene introducing the Naughty Mouse, a mischief-making character you will only see in Centre Company’s production. This year, the Naughty Mouse will be performed by local student Israel Lasley. We are then transported to a lively Christmas party where we meet Clara and her family and guests, along with the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer. Clara will be performed by local dancer, Karolina Dengel, and Mark Rubin will reprise his role as Drosselmeyer. Presents are handed out to children at the party in front of a majestic Christmas tree. The children laugh and dance, and three magical dolls come to life. Clara begs Drosselmeyer to bring her Nutcracker doll to life, but he refuses, or so we think. When the party ends and Clara lays down to sleep with her Nutcracker doll in her arms, Drosselmeyer brings the Nutcracker to life, setting off an epic battle between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The Nutcracker Prince is performed this year

© Best Version Media by the talented Andrew Enriquez. When Clement C. Moore wrote about “visions of sugar plums danc[ing] in their heads” in ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, he must have envisioned the trip through dreamland in Act II of The Nutcracker. For when the battle ends, we are guided on a journey through scenes of dancing snow昀氀akes, 昀氀owers, Mother Ginger and her bon-bon children, and more. Here Clara meets the Sugar Plum Fairy, performed by Devon Teuscher, and her Cavalier Prince, performed by Cory Stearns, who dance together in perfect unity. Local dancers performing solo roles this year are Katharine Ackerman as the Snow Queen, Lilly Knisely leading the Waltz of the Flowers, and many more. Founded in 2012, Centre Company is a nonpro昀椀t organization that produces The Nutcracker locally. Open auditions are held for all dancers wishing to be in the production. Community support is
essential to continuing this holiday tradition. All costs of the production (from dancer instruction to staging to advertising) come from ticket sales and donations. Please join us on December 2 or 3 at 4 p.m. at Fauquier High School to kick off the holiday season with The Nutcracker! Tickets are available at https://buy.tututix. com/centreperformingartscompany. $35 for adults and $30 for children (12 and under, free for children under 2). Please consider making an additional tax-deductible donation when you purchase tickets or at www. centrecompany.org. Happy holidays!

Hero’s Bridge volunteer veteran Battle Buddy, Jon Esse, may have retired from the military, but his service continues.
J
on Esse is a volunteer with Hero’s Bridge, a local nonpro昀椀t that serves veterans aged 65 and older. Jon, a veteran himself, shared his service experience and why he volunteers with elderly veterans in his retirement. The Navy Desert Storm/Desert Shield veteran spent nearly 20 years in the military. “I accepted an early retirement offer in 1996 when President Clinton downsized the military.” It was an easy decision for the married man with three young teens at home and a shore-to-sea-to-shore Navy rotation.

writer, wrote about a veteran who was part of the local nonpro昀椀t Hero’s Bridge. “I am her 昀椀rst proofreader for articles and after reading this piece, I signed up to volunteer with this organization,” said Jon. Before the ink was dry on the paper, Jon had contacted Hero’s Bridge and been through the volunteer orientation program.

Hero’s Bridge offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities that give volunteers 昀氀exibility to do what they can when they can. “I never felt overwhelmed at being overcommitted to Hero’s Bridge,” said Jon. His 昀椀rst volunteer opportunity was becoming a Battle Buddy with John Victor, the veteran Lynnette had written about. “Every time I visit with John, he tells me about all the people who care about him, and it’s true,” said Jon.

According to Jon, Hero’s Bridge has organically created a familial culture. “Once you walk in the door, you realize you have become a part of something very special. You have become part of a family.” Today, Jon is still one of John Victor’s Battle Buddies (he has quite a few) and he also is one of the organization’s van drivers. Each month, Jon helps transport veterans, volunteers, and staff to excursions intended to help combat isolation and keep elderly veterans socializing. They visit such places as military museums, horse farms, iron forges, walks through historic Old Towns, and many others. Each excursion includes a festive lunch at a local eatery.
Esse enlisted in the Navy in 1979. “A buddy of mine said, let’s go jump out of airplanes and throw hand grenades and I said okay! We went to enlist in the Army, but somehow both ended up in the Navy,” Jon said looking back at the memory with humor. Esse spent his career working as an electrician on amphibious ships. He spent all of his sea duty in Norfolk, Virginia with shore duty time at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida and the Pentagon’s Navy Annex in Washington, D.C. In total, he served on three ships.
that decreases social isolation and increases advocacy.
The Battle Buddy program is Hero’s Bridge signature program and bridges younger and older veterans in a special model of care

While Jon is technically retired from both the military and his career as a civilian, his service hasn’t ended. It has simply morphed into a new type of service; caring for elderly veterans and encouraging others to do the same. “My neighbor is a second-grade teacher. She was looking for someplace for her students to send cards. I quickly recommended Hero’s Bridge and made the connection. It is such an easy way to demonstrate respect for veterans, seniors in general, and even wider than that, respect for other members of the community.” Jon’s message to potential Hero’s Bridge volunteers is that you can do as much or as little with the organization as your time permits but be careful because you will fall in love with these people. Hero’s Bridge® is dedicated to serving elderly veterans, aged 65 and older, by bridging our veterans to a better quality of life through age-speci昀椀c and innovative programs. These services are available to heroes wherever they call home, at no expense to them or their families. Learn more about Hero’s Bridge programs at www.herosbridge.org.
