Neighbors! As I likely mentioned last year, we are now at the doorstep of what is, in my opinion, the very best time of the year! I struggle to get past these gorgeous fall days, still with warmth but hinting at cool. It is so refreshing to step outside and just breathe deeply each morning! In this issue, you will see a nod to all things fall… without mention of pumpkin spice anything! We have a list of orchards and fall activities, ghostly events, pumpkin events, and a delicious pretzel recipe for anyone attending an Oktoberfest. There may even be one tiny peek at Christmas for our entrepreneurs who wish to sell their wares and services at Santa’s Village Craft and Vendor Fair at Fauquier High School in November. We are also excited to introduce you to the Curran family. I believe there will be an underlying topic of resiliency in feature family stories for the next few issues. It’s hard to interview families and not dive directly into how they managed during the lockdown and the very worst of the past 18+ months. Corey and Jeff were dealt a difficult hand and recognize that so many others were too. But they took a few deep breaths and ate that elephant, one bite at a time. You can read their story on page 6. Heartland Hospice also shares their services with us. People may need to dig a little extra deep for that resiliency when needing hospice care for a loved one. Heartland Hospice emphasizes being there wherever you are in your health care journey. Read more about them on page 10. I hope you enjoy this season with your loved ones, and we would love to hear from you! We welcome information, and photos, from our readers to include in a future issue of the magazine!

Corey and Jeff Curran:

Maintaining an Even Keel in Rough Waters By Aimée O’Grady | Photography by The Little Photo Shop

Most years, Corey and Jeff begin the new year with a cruise already on the calendar; however, at the start of 2020, they weren’t looking forward to a cruise; they were excited about expanding and relocating Corey’s salon. “What we went through in 2020 as small business owners was no day on a cruise, but then again, that wasn’t the best place to be either,” said Corey. “I’ve been a hairdresser since graduating high school, but it wasn’t until 2011 that I decided to open my own business,” said Corey, the sole proprietor of Fast Forward Salon. Jeff, who has a career in government contracting and works for Raytheon, acted as her sounding board. “We had just moved and had a one-year-old,” said Jeff. “We needed to make sure that we were making the right decision for our family.”

6

OCTOBER 2021

The family moved to Vint Hill nearly ten years ago. “Jeff’s nephew lives in the community, so we had been here a number of times. We didn’t think we would be able to find a house, but suddenly something became available,” said Corey. “We are very lucky with where we live. You can buy your dream house, but you can’t buy your dream neighbors. We ended up with both,” she added of the neighbors they now call friends. Corey added, “We have Jeff’s nephew nearby, but no other family. Unless we have some advance notice so our parents can come help, it’s up to Jeff and me to figure it out. We are lucky though, since our kids are the only grandkids on one side and the youngest on the other side, our parents are more than happy to help.”

Jeff was raised in Alexandria and bought a condo in Manassas in 2005. “I could get much more for my money in Manassas than Alexandria,” he confirmed. Corey is from West Virginia. The two met through mutual friends. “I’m a coal-miner’s daughter and granddaughter,” said Corey. “My grandfather also opened a car dealership that my father managed, and my brother now manages. I have no idea how they did it, but they both managed two full-time jobs.” With entrepreneurs in her family, including her mother, who is a florist, it was no surprise when Corey expressed an interest in opening a salon. However, when 2020 came around, they were dealt a few surprises. “In my small town, sports were the main focus. I cheered in high school and loved being part of a team. That was something that I was looking for when I opened my salon.” “A lot of people think small business owners don’t have a lot of time off, and that may be true for some industries, but Corey only had a few weekends off each year when she worked for someone else,” Jeff said. “With the staff I have, I can leave the salon and know it is in great hands,” added Corey. “In January [2020], we had decided to expand the business to become a medspa and hire a nurse,” said Corey. “At our current location, there was no room to expand. We couldn’t build out, so our only option was to move. At the beginning

of the year, we were ending our existing lease and starting a lease at a new location in Gainesville.” Then the pandemic hit. Jeff and Corey are also parents to three children, Adalyn, a sixthgrader at Auburn MS, Harper, a second-grader at Greenville ES, and Colton, who is in PreK at St. Michaels in Vint Hill. “All of a sudden, we were homeschooling our kids, paying rent on two properties, and had no clientele because we weren’t allowed to open for 90 days,” said Corey. During this time, the couple got creative. “We went into the shop and took out all the shampoo and conditioner we had in inventory, and began to make deliveries,” said Jeff. “We also made how-to videos for our customers,” said Corey, who adds that her salon has very loyal customers around. To make matters more difficult, they were paying rent while closed. During the lockdown, salon employers weren't complaining, “Everyone just wanted to know how they could help,” said Corey.

8

OCTOBER 2021

Once the salon was permitted to reopen, customers came flooding back in. “We did six weeks of appointments in one week,” said Corey. Having maintained and even grown a business during a pandemic showed Corey and Jeff that they can tackle whatever comes their way, and a lot of it has to do with maintaining an even keel when the waters get rough. “My initial reaction is sometimes panic,” said Corey, “But once I get that out of the way, I can take a clearer look at what is happening.” “My initial response is to say, Ok, we’ll figure it out,” said Jeff. And the couple does just that. They figure it out. “Without family nearby, how we were going to manage childcare was another obstacle,” said Corey. But again, the couple figured it out with a little help from their friends. “A neighbor mentioned another neighbor who was available to nanny during the day. She helped the girls manage their homeschooling for the school year and keep an eye on Colton.”

And while things have begun to simmer down and the expanded salon is now fully operational, Corey is focused on the salon’s tenth anniversary. “We are planning a big celebration this month.” Back at home, the couple enjoys simple pleasures with their children. “Harper is doing cheer, and Adalyn plays soccer on a travel team. Colton was not involved in activities due to the pandemic but loves playing with cars. Family time includes some creativity, “We like to camp out in our garage,” shared Jeff. “We bring the TV into the garage and camping cots and watch movies and camp out.” For Corey, while it was hectic, she is grateful for the 90 days she spent at home during the lockdown. “It’s a time I will never forget. I was able to interact and be with my kids everyday and it gave me a chance to slow down a precious moment in their lives.” With a new year right around the corner, the family is hoping to get another cruise on that calendar and enjoy some muchdeserved time away.

Charity Spotlight - By Amber Hawes, Administrator | Photos by Heartland Hospice

Heartland Hospice Serves Our most Vulnerable Citizens Heartland Hospice has been serving our community locally from the Warrenton office since 2008. I opened the office as a nurse and community liaison and have helped grow the organization. Patient and family satisfaction, commitment to excellent care, and the generational impact we can create for our patients and their families still amazes me and drives my dedication to what we do every day. WHAT MAKES HEARTLAND HOSPICE OF WARRENTON DIFFERENT? v Y ou don't have to give up hope to get hospice. Many patients and the loved ones who care for them say they wish hospice care had started sooner. v Comforting treatments for patients can continue. Treatments that provide our patients with comfort and relief can continue uninterrupted, even after we've started providing hospice care. v We don't require that advance directive choices be made, such as a "do not resuscitate" order (DNR) or living will to begin providing hospice care. v When you need care, we're ready to provide it. Any day of the year, any time of day, we can initiate hospice care for you or your loved one. v Our heart stretches across the nation. At any given time, we provide comforting care to thousands of patients in communities and neighborhoods across the country. v We're accredited by Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC). We've chosen to follow their additional requirements in order to help advance the highest standards of community-based care. v We are part of a not-for-profit organization, focusing not only on our patients and their families but also on our communities. v Wherever you are in your health care journey, we're there to meet you. v As mutual care providers, we work closely with your health care professionals to make sure specific protocols are closely followed. WHAT DOES BEING A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION MEAN? Heartland Hospice has recently merged with ProMedica Healthcare. This gives us the depth of a hospital system knowledge and expertise and the local, small-town feel to care for our own. Our goal is to enrich the lives of our hospice patients as well as their families.

10

OCTOBER 2021

As a not-for-profit organization, we are committed to making our care available to anyone who needs us. We are proud to be part of a community-based organization that focuses on exceptional care and is engaged in improving our local communities’ overall health and well-being. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO THOSE WHO ENTRUST US WITH THEIR CARE? Every patient is different, with different challenges, different needs, different family and caregivers. Being a not-for-profit allows us to have the unique ability to navigate advanced illnesses while emphasizing comfort and quality of life, thanks to our highly experienced employees, commitment to patient-centered quality care, and deep community relationships. This commitment extends beyond those in our care by helping our community thrive. WE ARE FOCUSED ON THE PATIENT AND FAMILY JOURNEY BEYOND OUR HEALTHCARE WALLS. As a not-for-profit organization, we will be able to invest back into our business and our community. As we expand this commitment across the territory we serve, we will look at those factors beyond health care that impact the overall health of a community. For over ten years, ProMedica has led the way with social determinants of health, those things that impact wellness like transportation, access to healthy food, and medication. Being able to apply this expertise locally will not only improve the lives of our patients but also their families. This is truly living our mission, our local staff serving where they live. To learn more about our services and our commitment to our community, please call us today or visit our website. We are honored to be able to serve this community. Austin and Sarah Bedrosian Have Fallen for Fauquier By Aimée O'Grady | Photos by Bedrosian family

Recent transplants from a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania, Austin, and Sarah are making a name for themselves in Fauquier. The childhood sweethearts, who have known each other since they were toddlers, attended Liberty University together and enjoyed the area so much, they decided to make it their home. “Fauquier reminds us of the town where we grew up but has so many more conveniences being so close to Northern Virginia,” said Austin. Until last year, Austin was a manager at Walmart and Sarah worked in a dental office. In August 2020, they welcomed a little girl, Charlie, to their family. “When Charlie was born, we knew we wanted to keep her home. My parents owned a cleaning service when I was growing up. I have a lot of knowledge about that business. It seemed like the right time to start one down there.” Sarah manages the office for Bedrosian Cleaning Services, and Austin works with clients and employees, of which there are five. “We are looking to hire more people. Commercial cleaning is part-time work since it is done after hours. Our employees are generally people looking for second jobs or work during nontraditional hours.” Austin also manages The Heart of Fauquier Podcast, available as both audio and video. “A business mentor recommended that I start a podcast to connect with the community. A quick look indicated that there weren’t any podcasts in the county and it would fill a media gap.” The podcast launched in November 2020, featuring Becky Miller of Piedmont Fine Properties as its first guest. “We had been working with Piedmont Fine Properties and were happy to offer them this added service.” The podcast has seen organic growth through social media channels and shares since its debut. “A lot of entrepreneurs used the pandemic to finally launch a business they had been considering and we are excited to help them grow that business.” Austin wants to share the services of his podcast to Brookside readers, “whether you are an established business or just starting out, we would love to feature you on an upcoming podcast.” When not working or connecting with community businesses, Austin and Sarah can be found enjoying time with their daughter in county parks. Annual Fundraising Event is in Full Swing By Aimée O'Grady

Come December 1, 2021, one lucky person will be awarded $15,000.00 as a result of having the winning ticket from Team Jordan’s Raffle Drawing! Additionally, there will be six other prize winners from the drawing. The drawing will take place during our annual fundraising event and will be held on December 1, 2021, at 6:00 pm, via Facebook. All of the proceeds generated from the fundraiser go towards furthering the efforts of suicide prevention by Team Jordan and its partner, Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services. Our Fundraiser Raffle is the main source of funding for our efforts.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an even greater need for suicide prevention efforts. From our perspective,

the amount of help that people now need to avert a crisis is far bigger than we have experienced in the past. Please support your community with this very important cause by purchasing tickets for the drawing, and then join us on December 1st for our big event! Tickets go on sale September 10, 2021, and are $100.00 each. ONLY 300 TICKETS WILL BE SOLD FOR THIS DRAWING!! Easy Soft Pretzel Recipe By Anita Parris Soule | Photos by Wild Thistle Kitchen

I'm a big believer that the best things in life and in the kitchen are often the simplest. Like, "life's simple pleasures" is a phrase for a reason. This easy soft pretzel recipe is just one example of that. It really is the best and the absolute simplest. Soft, buttery dough topped with salt or cinnamon sugar eaten INGREDIENTS Æ 2 cups warm milk (100-110 degrees F) Æ 2 tablespoons brown sugar (or white sugar, honey, or malt syrup if you're really fancy) Æ 3 teaspoons yeast Æ 5 ¼ cups AP flour Æ ½ stick soft butter Æ 1 teaspoon kosher salt EGG WASH Æ one egg yolk mixed with 2 tablespoons water TOPPING SUGGESTIONS (See Post Above For A Long List Of Add-Ins, Toppings, And Dipping Ideas)

Pretzel salt Everything bagel seasoning Cinnamon sugar Sesame seeds Poppy seeds INSTRUCTIONS

warm from the oven? I mean, come on. My kids would literally eat these soft pretzels every day if I could keep up. This easy soft pretzel recipe makes 12 nice big pretzels, but I have also used it to make smaller pretzels as well as pretzel buns. It is super versatile and really easy to work with. Soft and slightly chewy, these pretzels are quick and easy to make, require no boiling, and can be either sweet or savory. ross the two ends over each other to C form a circle with overlapping ends, twist once or twice (twice is my signature move), and bring the two points down to make a pretzel shape. Here is a useful video on shaping pretzels (I don't flip them over like in the video, but you feel free to do so!) and make sure to reference the step-by-step photos above. Once you do a couple, you'll get the hang of it. lace the shaped pretzels onto a parchment or Silpat P lined baking tray. I usually do 4-6 per standard baking tray - they do puff up. rush with egg wash and sprinkle with desired topping B (see list of suggestions in the blog post) - if you are going to brush with butter and roll in cinnamon sugar or something similar, do not egg wash before baking. Bake in preheated oven for 9 minutes. I f you are going the cinnamon sugar route, you will brush the baked pretzels with melted butter and roll them in cinnamon sugar after baking.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F I n the bowl of a stand mixer, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Allow to sit for 5 minutes dd flour, butter, and salt and mix until dough comes A together. Continue kneading at low speed for 5 minutes, adding one tablespoon of flour at a time until dough pulls away from the sides and you have a firm, smooth, not sticky dough. Cover and let rise in a warm place for one hour. ump dough onto your work surface (I do this straight on D my counter) and divide it into 12 equal pieces. oll each piece into a long rope - about 24 inches. It helps R to keep a bowl of water nearby for this. I have found working with slightly damp hands will help you roll the dough into a rope much easier than using flour, as many recipes suggest.

Notes: If you want to make these into pretzel buns, instead of rolling them into ropes, simply shape each piece into a ball, flatten slightly, and bake as instructed.

Rain Gardens & Natural Solutions Available for Your Property! Fauquier County has hundreds of miles of rivers and streams flowing through our yards, farms, towns, and commercial areas. These range in size and characteristics, but all share a couple of things in common. First, they all provide habitat for fish and wildlife and can offer some great recreational opportunities. Second, they all eventually make their way to the Chesapeake Bay. Sometimes, these waterways carry pollution, even if we cannot see it. Most of the time, this is nutrient and sediment pollution from stormwater runoff. A lot of this pollution comes from our yards, roads, rooftops, parking lots, and other impervious surfaces. Fortunately, some great solutions are available to Fauquier County residents to help manage stormwater runoff, reduce erosion, provide trees and native plants, and a wide range of other benefits to your property! The John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District (JMSWCD) offers a program called the Virginia Conservation Assistance Program. Or VCAP for short. This urban cost-share program provides financial incentives and technical and educational assistance to property owners installing eligible Best Management Practices (BMPs) to combat erosion and stormwater runoff. These practices can be installed in areas of your yard where problems like erosion, poor drainage, or poor vegetation occur. Qualified sites shall be used for residential, commercial, or recreational purposes with a proposed practice that addresses a need. Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR) is partnering with JMSWCD and several other partners to offer support to interested landowners for this program.

Article & Photos By Bryan Hofmann, Deputy Director with Friends of the Rappahannock

One of the practices included in this program is rain gardens. A rain garden is a shallow landscaped depression that is an easy and effective tool to help reduce stormwater runoff from residential properties. These gardens are strategically placed to intercept stormwater runoff until it can be fully absorbed into the ground. Their design allows the rain garden to serve almost like a bowl that collects water from downspouts or overland flow across a property. The water is then able to infiltrate into the underlying soil slowly. Rain gardens can come in all different shapes and sizes but are best when planted with native plants that are indigenous to Virginia. Once established, these plants require less maintenance, have deep roots that soak up lots of water, provide food and habitat to wildlife, and are beautiful. These projects are a great option for residential neighborhoods, schools, houses of worship, and more! For more information on the VCAP program, please visit the program website at https://vaswcd.org/vcap If you are interested in a project on your property, we ask that you complete a short informational form, and a representative will contact you to start the process. Fauquier Health Wellness Center’s Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Received Certification by Industry Leader Fauquier Health Wellness Center is proud to announce its cardiovascular/ pulmonary rehabilitation program certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). This certification recognizes Fauquier Health Wellness Center’s commitment to improving the quality of life of patients by enhancing standards of care. Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs are designed to help people with cardiovascular problems (e.g., heart attacks, coronary artery bypass graft surgery) and pulmonary problems (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], respiratory symptoms) recover faster and live healthier. Both programs include exercise, education, counseling, and support for patients and their families. To earn accreditation, the Fauquier Health Wellness Center’s cardiovascular/pulmonary rehabilitation program participated in an application process

that requires extensive documentation of the program’s practices. AACVPR Program Certification is the only peer-review accreditation process designed to review individual programs for adherence to standards and guidelines developed and published by AACVPR and other related professional societies. Each program’s application is reviewed by the AACVPR Program Certification Committee, and certification is awarded by the AACVPR Board of Directors. In 2018, AACVPR moved to an outcomes-based process with performance measurements that represent more meaningful outcomes. Therefore, AACVPR-certified programs are leaders in the cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation field because they offer the most advanced practices available and have proven track records of high-quality patient care. AACVPR Program Certification is valid for three years.

Fauquier Health Wellness Center Team is proud to announce their AACVPR certification of its cardiovascular/pulmonary rehabilitation program.

About AACVPR. Founded in 1985, the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the mission of reducing morbidity, mortality, and disability from cardiovascular and pulmonary disease through education, prevention, rehabilitation, research, and disease management. Central to the core mission is improvement in quality of life for patients and their families.
