D e a r Residents, There aren’t too many pages from my parents’ parenting book that I would borrow, but a love of adventure is one page that I copy in my own parenting style. We always encourage our children to try new things. Whether on the culinary front, extracurricular activities or in nature adventures can be found everywhere. This summer we were fortunate enough to take our children out west to explore the wonders of Lake Tahoe and eastern California including the gold rush town of Grass Valley and the famed trees in Big Trees National Park. In this issue we introduce you to the Melton family whose patriarch knows about adventure. From jumping on his bike to check out the nearest dirt roads from his home to those on the Spanish Island of Mallorca, the Melton’s love new experiences, especially those of the culinary kind! Their son Walker follows suit with his love of the ninja course! The Blackwells provide us with some background on their newly formed nonprofit in memory of their two caring and adventure-seeking children whose lives were both lost due to mental health issues. BWell Today for Tomorrow helps area nonprofits with funding to ensure those suffering from mental health issues always receive the help they need. Shelly Norden, journalism teacher at Kettle Run High School, shares the exciting journey of 2016 graduate Brenton Doyle who set out to become a major league baseball player and just made the draft and is now headed to the majors. We learn about a local chef whose dedication to his career made him lose sight of his health and how a few simple changes helped him get back on track. And expert contributor Alesia House shares with readers the ins and outs of river cruising. Wherever your adventures take you this summer, I hope that you exercise caution, enjoy the time to its fullest and share your travels with us! Enjoy this issue of Brookside Neighbors!

t didn’t take long for newcomer, Chad Melton, to learn the lay of the land two years ago this past spring when he moved his family from Wytheville, where he served as hospital administrator, to Fauquier, where he succeeded Rodger Baker in the same role. Chad was introduced to the Snow Hill community during one of his visits and was enamored by the charming established community with mature trees and large, wooded lots. “I called my wife, as I was being driven around and told her that I thought I had found our new neighborhood,” he recalls. Chad moved into their new home in February, while Julie and their then5-year-old son, Walker, waited for the school year to end before joining him a few months later. 6
JULY 2019
By Aimée O’Grady | Photography by The Little Photo Shop During those months alone, Chad became acquainted not only with Fauquier hospital and the community, but, an avid cyclist, he soon found the rear exit from Snow Hill that took him West of Route 29 onto Old Busthead Road leading him to the vast countryside of Northern Fauquier into Marshall and The Plains. Today, to balance his demanding work schedule that often has him working more than 60 hours each week, he recharges on weekends with 90-mile bike rides in the quiet solitude that Fauquier offers. “I can’t answer the phone when I’m on the bike, so it’s the perfect way to literally unplug,” he says. Chad and Julie met in college where she studied childhood development and he was on a career path to becoming a hospital administrator, a role he did not always envision for himself. “I wanted to go into physical therapy but had an uncle in hospital administration and he encouraged me to pursue that.” During his education, Chad had the opportunity to scrub in on procedures and has spent time observing in both the operating and emergency rooms. Today he brings a compassionate touch to his role at the hospital and helps to ensure patient

Julie continued her education with a master’s degree in family studies. “I interned for child protective services during my graduate studies and remained there for five years, until we moved to Tucson where I worked for a private agency that managed foster homes.” Her demanding career exposed her to some of the worst that humanity has to offer. “If I was able to help one child, it made my effort worthwhile,” she says of the experience. After ten years in the role, Julie and Chad welcomed their son and she decided to dedicate her attention to Walker’s welfare. Today, Julie enjoys getting to know her community and has settled into a comfortable routine of volunteering at Walker’s school and attending local Barre classes. When not at school, Walker is practicing his ninja skills in the course that his parents set up in the yard. He scampers up the trees and across the obstacles with the agility only a 7-year-old can possess. The active boy keeps both of his parents on

Hailing from Texas, the couple does not have family nearby. “Walker and I head south to visit family for a few weeks each summer,” says Julie with Chad joining them for a portion of their visit. While it is difficult to be away from family, the couple looks forward to vacations where they can catch up. This year the family has a busy vacation schedule that will not only take them to Alabama and Louisiana to see their extended families, but also to Spain and its secluded beaches on the island of Mallorca. Julie laughs at how the location was chosen, “I’ll give you one guess,” she teases. The island is known in the cycling community as one of the best places to cycle. “While Walker and I enjoy the beaches, Chad will be hitting the course,” she laughs. The family also looks forward to enjoying Spain’s renowned cuisine. Foodies at heart, they enjoy sampling fine food everywhere they go. “We will travel to eat,” laughs Chad looking forward to sampling popular Spanish dishes. While this couple has called many towns home over the past fifteen years, it is in Fauquier where they hope to set down roots, knowing that exotic destinations and family are only a quick flight away. A Local Chef Adopts a Healthier Lifestyle By Aimée O’Grady
A demanding culinary career took its toll on former athlete, Chef Anthony Nelson.
W
orking in high-profile kitchens around the country for over 15 years Nelson honed his skills as a chef while relying on traits developed as a high school athlete and son of a cattle rancher in rural Colorado. Traits like discipline, leadership, strong work ethic, and thinking fast on your feet – helped him navigate the ever-increasing demands of the restaurant industry. The work and stress became an all-consuming focus and over time Anthony watched his weight increase and health deteriorate as a result. Four years ago when Nelson received an invitation to visit Marshall, Virginia from his former Culinary Institute of America classmate, Neal Wavra - he was intrigued. After seeing the building, the region, and the vi-
sion – Chef Anthony accepted the offer to move to Fauquier and run the kitchen of the new restaurant. Focusing on locally sourced meat and produce with an emphasis on quality, comfort food, Chef Anthony was preparing delicious meals for his food conscious guests but wasn’t making the same considerations for himself. “Having cooked all day, I would leave the kitchen and grab a Coke and a hotdog and call it dinner,” says Nelson. One year ago this month, in his early forties, he had a wake-up call. “Diabetes was in my future. With the way I was living, I was going to become diabetic if I didn’t make some changes.” It was then that he decided to change his diet and adopt a new lifestyle. He now eats a diet high in fat and protein and low in car-
bohydrates. It didn’t take long for the weight to start coming off. “Since last July I have lost 115 pounds,” he says proudly. Anthony has recently begun adding cardio fitness into his daily routine. Currently, he loses approximately 10lbs each month and feels better, not only physically, but mentally as well. “My mind is so much clearer, and I can focus better on the things that I have going on in my kitchen and my life.” Chef Anthony has a newfound appreciation for what it takes to eat consciously both for himself and his guests. He designs his menus to be flexible enough to meet a broad range of dietary needs – including those that have no restrictions as at all. Sample Chef Anthony’s dishes anytime at Field and Main on Main Street in Marshall.

BWell Today for Tomorrow
HONORING THE LIVES OF JACOB AND ANDREA By Aimée O'Grady
T
heir message is simple, where there is a need, they want to help. Dick and Linda Blackwell’s children, Jacob and Andrea, have contributed their own chapters to an oft-told story in the piedmont region. Both having succumbed to current health issues that lead to their unfortunate and much too soon deaths. Andrea lost her life to depression in 2016 and Jacob lost his to an accidental overdose just 16 months later in 2017. They leave behind grieving parents, a sister, a brother and nieces who help the family move forward carrying unimaginable suffering. Leaning on Andrea’s care for others and Jacob’s embracing supportiveness, the family and friends have risen to create a social impact organization dedicated to providing funding for area nonprofits which have established programming for the prevention of at risk lifestyles in adolescents, support mental health awareness, and are wellness lifestyle focused. “It was just a few months after Jacob died that his friends asked if it would be ok to hold a golf tournament in his memory,” recalls Dick. “We needed time to think about it and we all agreed that if we were going to do this, it was going to have a purpose,” shares Linda. A spark was lit and the BWell Today for Tomorrow 501C3 took to seed and began to grow. “Our organization helps fill grants and ancillary funding for other nonprofits who may have restrictions with grant d i s b u r s e m e n t s ,” says Dick. Says Lin-

da. “If there is a need, no matter how seemingly small, we want to help.” It is the idea that the smallest of gestures can be the greatest of gifts and make a lasting impression on someone whose alternatives may put them at risk of danger. The organization held the second annual golf tournament in Jacob’s memory on May 31 at the Stonewall Golf Club at Lake Manassas and it surpassed all expectations. “The first year of an event like this you expect it to do well because you have people there making sure you are successful,” says Dick. “But the second year is more telling if you have an event that will be sustained.” The outpouring of love, support and donations exceeded budgetary estimates and will help BWell fund other nonprofits whose programs align with their mission and advocacy which is centric to prevention and adolescents. “We are not at the point where we can execute our own programs, but we have our vision. In the meantime, we help fill grants with organizations that we have vetted, have boots on the ground, and we know are doing things to help,” says Dick. Already in 2019, BWell is working with Verdun Adventure Bound, the Clifton Institute, Just Ask Trafficking Prevention and the Mental Health Association of Fauquier County.
Jacob's Friends
A cancer survivor, Linda Blackwell is no stranger to overcoming adversity. “In the early 90s, when our kids were young, I received my cancer diagnosis. Fortunately, after receiving treatment the cancer was in remission and I decided to stay home with the kids rather than go back to work. It was at this time that we adopted families in need. In all, with the help of our neighbors, we touched and met the needs of 12 families during Christmas. Some of
these families were living just a few miles away. People in need don’t have to be far away, they can be right under your nose,” she says. Linda maintained this caring spirit with her always and infected her children with it. Andrea, a registered transplant nurse helped people overcome insurmountable odds and Jacob, an avid outdoorsman, was everyone’s best friend and always a compassionate counselor to others. Although overcome with emotion when speaking of their beloved children, the Blackwells are determined to grow their nonprofit, continue supporting local organizations aligned with their mission and will do good to honor their children. And people are taking note. “While on the golf course during the tournament, I received an email from a nonHighland School Alumni profit about twelve children who needed help with funding for a summer camp program. These are 12 children that may otherwise have been left at home alone and could have turned to at-risk behaviors. Twelve children we will help,” says Dick. Planning is already underway for the third annual golf tournament. Volunteers, golf sponsors and cash donations are needed. The Blackwells encourage readers to learn more about BWell Today for Tomorrow by following them on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BWell-Today-For-Tomorrow and reading their website. www.bwelltoday.org If you or a loved one suffers from a mental health crisis, please contact The Mental Health Association of Fauquier County at 540-341- 8732.

BROOKSIDE RESIDENT TO RUN
200 MILE ENDURANCE RACE FOR KIDS WITH CANCER By Laurie Winter Due to side effects of her treatments when she was a teenager, just last year Loren was diagnosed with a brain tumor that was impinging on her optic nerve and required brain surgery to remove. She was able to recover from that setback with the unwavering support of her fiancé, Billy LeDrew, and her 7-year-old daughter, Skylar, an upcoming 2nd grader at Greenville Elementary. Loren won her cancer battle — a blessing that inspires her to volunteer with Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization organized exclusively to provide non-medical supportive care to children with cancer and their families.
W
hen Brookside resident Loren Jewell was 14 years old, she was diagnosed with the bone cancer, Ewing’s Sarcoma, and was told she may never walk again. After several rounds of chemotherapy, experimental trials, and a radical surgery that removed a large portion of her hip leaving her with a permanent limp, Loren beat the odds and was deemed cancer free and is now in remission. Loren did in fact walk again and she went on to run the Marine Corps Marathon and become a Fairfax County firefighter.
“Stillbrave will strive to help with the family bills and/ or provide gas cards, grocery cards, and similar items. Oftentimes, Stillbrave volunteers will help with the house chores, yard work, home repairs, babysitting, and other tasks. Heartbreakingly, we also help pay for funerals,” Loren said. Loren also heads up Stillbrave’s adolescent mentorship program where she provides emotional support and friendship to teenagers going through the same hardships she endured years ago. The mentorship program was developed to help other kids deal with all the stress and issues that arise during and post treatment. “Being a teenager is tough. Now add being very ill, losing your hair, possibly deformities from surgery, time missed from school, loss of friends, hormone imbalances, infertility, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and the list goes on. I provide a support for these kids as they face the toughest battle of their life. I was told I would never walk again, never have kids, and be disabled. They can look at me and think ‘hey I can do this.’ They can make goals and plan for their future. I try and bring some light into the darkness they are facing.” In August of this year, Loren will be running the Bigfoot 200 alongside "Tattoo Tom" Mitchell, Founder and Director of Stillbrave. The Bigfoot 200 is a 206-mile ultramarathon that takes place over the course of 4 days in and around Mt. Saint Helen's volcano in Washington State. It is an intense and grueling race; one that Tom Mitchell attempted to complete 3 times prior. When

Loren learned of this and what Tom was doing, she knew it was the perfect avenue to help raise awareness and she needed to be a part of it.
Mall, she trains on local trails, often running for 5 hours at a time. This race will be exhausting and painful, but nothing like what she went through as a teenager, or what the 200 kids she is running for go through every day. She is motivated by the kids and fueled by her own cancer battle.
Loren and Tom are running this race to raise money for the Stillbrave Foundation and to increase awareness for childhood cancer. Each mile of the race is dedicated to a special child who is either currently fighting or has fought childhood cancer. Along the way, at each mile, Loren and Tom will take out the pictures of these children, say their name aloud, and honor them so that they are not forgotten. “I’m doing this race because I don’t know what else to do. People need to know the truth. Childhood cancer is not rare. We will lose the equivalent of 5 elementary schools from cancer this year alone. That’s not rare to me. I’m doing this because today 42 parents will get the news that their child has cancer. I’m doing this because kids are being tortured, having poison injected in their bodies, and having limbs amputated. Most of the kids I visit with are getting treatments that are over 40 years old. The poison getting injected in their little bodies is so horrible that the nurses administering it must wear special protection suits, so it doesn’t get on their skin. Most of the funerals I’ve attended lately, the child has died from the treatment, not the cancer! I’m doing this because I don’t want any other child to go through what I went through. I’m tired of seeing children suffer and parents stand by as their doctors say, “there’s nothing left we can do.”
“I see the kids when they are sick in the hospital," Jewell said. "I see them when they are throwing up. I see them when they are getting poked or tortured when they are getting limbs amputated, things like that that does not even compare to running 200 miles. That’s nothing."
“I’m doing this race because I don’t know what else to do. People need to know the truth. Childhood cancer is not rare.”
Loren’s family has been exceedingly supportive of her training, which oftentimes requires her to sacrifice family time. Her daughter, Skylar, tries to get involved in volunteering with Stillbrave at every chance she gets. “I think it’s important to involve my daughter so that she can see the importance of helping and being there for others during a difficult time. She aspires to be a scientist so she can develop a cure for childhood cancer. She always says things like “I want to help the kids with cancer; I want to be part of the team. “ To learn more about Loren’s upcoming ultra-marathon race or how you can help with sponsorship, please visit run.stillbrave.org. “Aren’t our kids worth more than 4%? Would 40-year-old treatments be okay for your child? All the while they’ve come out with 5 new versions of the iPhone in the last 3 years. I’m doing this so the kids who have passed will never be forgotten. Their legacy will live on and be honored.”

Community One of the performers favored events is their “Singing Valentines” Program, available only on Valentine’s day. Mint Condition and another quartet from the Blue Ridge Chorus, travel throughout Fauquier/ Prince William/and Culpeper Counties singing love songs for a small fee. “We visit homes, businesses and schools to deliver a rose, chocolates and 3 romantic songs in the barbershop style creating smiles plus tears of joy for all!” says Larry. Most members do not sight-read and are unable to learn their part by reading sheet music. “Each member receives a digital version of our harmony to learn our part. When we meet weekly to rehearse, we combine each part,” explains Larry. The talent of a barbershop singer is remaining on their line without outperforming another when it comes time to rehearse together. The whole of the group is worth more than the sum of its parts. “No one comes to hear any one of us, they come to hear the quartet,” says Larry a dermatologist, running a busy dermatology practice in Warrenton.
MINT CONDITION QUARTET By Aimée O’Grady
Although the style of music is known for its fluidity and members come and go with regularity, for the members of the Barbershop Quartet, Mint Condition, the camaraderie they forged has kept this piece of wholesome American entertainment together for the past five years performing throughout the county.
With a variety of backgrounds from school security to doctor, engineer and U.S. mint employee, the quartet shares this creative outlet and over the years has developed a camaraderie that keeps them together. The name Mint Condition is derived from Glenn Williamson’s career working at the U.S. Mint. Glenn himself has been singing barbershop for 58 years! The songs performed are rearranged by Barbershop composers who can take virtually any piece of music and strip out and recompose the four harmonies, a talent unto itself.
Barbershop harmonies first formed in the late 1930s with the formation of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing of America, recently renamed the Barbershop Harmony Society, a national and international organization with chapters and divisions throughout the world. Mint Condition is a member of the Warrenton Blueridge Barbershoppers Chapter within the mid-Atlantic division of the society. Barbershop music is a style of a cappella harmony or unaccompanied music. Using only one’s voice, the group creates tone, beats and rhythms. The quartet sings in precise synchrony and creates a perceived fifth voice producing a “ringing chord”, when the four voices reinforce one another. The lyrics are clearly sung and produce singable melodies. Mint Condition quartet members include tenor Larry Finkel, lead Ralph Griffith, bass Worth Kirkman, and baritone Glenn Williamson. For sound quality and optimum harmonizing, the members perform standing in this order facing the audience. The quartet is easy to spot in their signature red, striped shirts and straw hats and can be found at the mountain top at Sky Meadows during the Strawberry Festival, the dark-clad wintry streets of First Night, and at birthday parties for the young and old to name just a few of their annual performances. “We make folks smile, from 7-year-olds, to 97-year-olds,” says tenor Larry Finkel.

JULY 2019
Although Mint Condition is a performance group that does not enter competitions, there is an annual international competition that is held this month in Salt Lake City. The competition draws as many as 10,000 attendees. “In our area, the Harmonizers out of Alexandria are one of the larger groups that regularly enters competitions. Traditionally a men’s singing group, the national organization has opened
its doors to women in the past year, bringing a new vibrancy to the style of singing. “Women bring a different timber and quality to a performance,” says Larry. The Sweet Adelines is the all-female counterpart to the Barbershoppers.
ALLEGRO PRESENTS
While the average age of a singer in generally in the 50s, the local chapters welcome interested singers of all ages. Members have a lot to gain regardless of age. “I love music, harmony and performing in a genre that is affordable. There is no expensive equipment or overhead. It’s a great start for a performer on a budget,” says Larry. There are both junior quartets and youth quartets for younger performers.
Research indicates that our mind controls who we are and how we feel. If we keep our mind healthy and active, our body feels better and is healthier. As a matter of fact, music enables parts of the mind to grow that would not otherwise grow. But in order for this to happen, one must become physically involved in a music program.
As it turns out, singing in a barbershop quartet is also good for your health, “Performing and learning music involves mental, physical and emotional stimulation and discipline. It checks all the boxes within physical limitations including muscle control while holding notes for various lengths of time. There is also the social engagement. All of these help us to age well,” says Dr. Finkel. See the sidebar on Thrive.
People ages 55 and older and are involved in group music activities (choirs, dance, orchestras and bands) go to the doctor less often, have a higher self-worth, have clearer minds, and have lower blood pressure, a lower chance of dementia, and fewer falls.
Mint Condition encourages everyone to make harmony and attend one of their upcoming events and contact a group member to join. Follow them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/Mint-Condition-Barbershop-Quartet
Allegro has created a new program that is aimed at this audience to help community members who fall into this age group age with better health. Thrive will serve over 55 students who want to engage in music with group classes taught by certified instructors. Social interaction being a large part of healthy living, Allegro will create an age-friendly community for its Thrive students and hopes that in turn it will give students, who may otherwise be distancing themselves from others as they age, a sense of belonging.

Recipe Corner
Spanish Spark ling Saffron
Scallops By Anita Parris Soule
I
let my love for alliteration run wild with this recipe—also, my love for scallops. I gave these a Spanish flair with a saffron cream sauce. Do you ever cook with saffron? Yes, it’s expensive, but the reason for its hefty price tag is that it is the dried stamen, stigmata, and styles of a specific type of crocus flower and because of its delicate nature it must be hand-harvested. Can you imagine? The good news is it will last in your spice drawer for a very long time and a little goes a long way for adding both color and flavor to recipes. The first time I tasted saffron was in a Spanish seafood soup years and years ago and I still remember that delicious broth. It is slightly floral (not surprisingly) and it pairs beautifully with seafood so pairing it with scallops was a no-brainer. Scallops have been a favorite of mine since I was a little girl. If I saw scallops on a menu, I would beg to order them. Now I just make them myself when the craving strikes. When I’m shopping for scallops I always buy them frozen and I always make sure there is only one ingredient: scallops. There are just no such thing as “fresh” scallops here in Virginia, so if you’re buying them at the fish counter, they have been thawed. I prefer thawing them myself. However you buy them, make sure they don’t have any additives. Sometimes they are filled with preservatives and other additives to retain their color, and besides that just being scary, these additives will leach out during cooking and prevent you from getting a good sear. Best to just avoid them all around. This dish comes together in no time and is just so elegant and so, so delicious. Pair it with some good crusty bread for mopping
up the sauce and a fresh salad and you have the perfect summertime lunch or dinner. Bonus points for eating it outside with someone you love and a couple glasses of cool sparkling Cava (Spanish sparkling wine). A few notes on the recipe: • A hot pan and dry scallops are a must for a good sear. I line a plate with paper towels, lay my scallops on top, then add another layer of paper towels on top and let them sit for a few minutes. • Don’t be afraid of a HOT skillet. Let it get nice and hot for a few minutes before you add the oil and butter. Then let the oil and butter get sizzly and just a little brown before you add the scallops. You want them to sear not steam. It might get loud and smoky, but it will be worth it! • Feel free to use any white wine here, I used sparkling just for fun (and alliteration!), specifically Cava to stick with the Spanish theme. Also because my dad was a big fan of Cava. It’s widely available and surprisingly inexpensive. • If scallops aren’t your favorite, feel free to use shrimp or any other seafood of your choice. Chicken cutlets would be really good too, and almost as quick to cook, but they would ruin the alliteration I’m afraid.
Ingredients for the scallops: • • • •
1 pound of scallops (about 20 scallops), thawed and patted dry 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons oil (I use olive oil) salt and pepper (it’s hard to give a measurement here because I just pinch and sprinkle the salt and grind the pepper right onto the scallops. Just give them an even, light seasoning)
Ingredients for the sauce: • • • • • • • •
1 clove garlic, finely minced 1 cup heavy cream ½ cup sparkling wine one pinch of saffron threads, about ½ teaspoon ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika ¼ teaspoon kosher salt ¼ teaspoon black pepper a few springs of fresh thyme, plus more for garnish
To prepare: Season scallops with a light sprinkling of salt and pepper on both sides. Heat a large skillet, cast iron if you have it, over medium-high heat.
Add butter and oil and let melt and foam until butter begins to brown.
ivabellasalon
Add scallops in a single layer. Let scallops sit for 3 minutes without touching them. After 3 minutes, flip scallops and cook for another 2-3 minutes until they are just cooked through. Remove scallops to a plate, reduce heat to medium, and add garlic to skillet. Stir garlic for about 30 seconds, and then add wine. Scrape the bottom of the pan as the wine reduces, making sure to get all the yummy brown bits from the bottom of the pan.

Once wine reduces for about 2 minutes, add cream, thyme springs, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and saffron threads. Allow this mixture to reduce over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the saffron releases its beautiful color and the sauce thickens to your liking. This should take about 5-7 minutes. At this point you can either add your scallops back to the pan, or you can spoon some sauce onto a plate and serve the scallops on top. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves if desired, and enjoy! Cruising the International Waterways By Alesia House
I
recently mentioned river cruising to a client, and she said, “You mean down the Mississippi?” She was not from D.C. or she may have said, “You mean down the Potomac?” Although you can take a river cruise here in the U.S through various companies, I was referring to cruising international waterways such as the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Douro, Volga and Yangtze Rivers. What’s the difference between an ocean and a river cruise? An ocean cruise takes you to the country, while a river cruise takes you through the country (through iconic cities and charming towns). An ocean cruise may have you days at sea surrounded by water. On a river cruise, you rarely have full days of sailing; rather, watching the breathtaking scenery becomes part of the journey. For those who are prone to motion sickness, a river cruise is a great option. Shallow water and land are always in sight, and you do not feel the motion of the water like an ocean cruise. A river cruise is a form of leisure travel. Usually they last more than a week with several port stops. Many times your cruise fare includes an excursion in each location, which is a good way to immerse yourself in the culture of the destination. Your dining and top shelf liqueur and local wines are included in your package as well.
AmaWaterways features “twin balconies,” meaning you could have a full-size, walk-out balcony as well as a French balcony with glass doors that open to a railing. Viking has been doing river cruises since 1997 and is a leading cruise line in the industry. Whether your desire is to go to Africa, Asia, Egypt, Ukraine, Russia, France, Portugal or Germany, a river cruise could be a great option for you to explore. River cruise clients tend to fall in love with these cruises; they are usually planning the next before they arrive back home. Now it’s your turn! Alesia House is a local travel concierge who can plan and orchestrate all the details of your vacation. Her goal is to help clients have stress-free vacations that will create lasting memories. I BOOK TRAVEL FOR U
The most global cities developed along the rivers: Paris, Amsterdam and Budapest, to name a few. The river provides you easy access to experience these cities along with quaint villages and towns surrounding them. The accommodations and excellent personalized service are a huge draw for many people. River cruises have 50-150 rooms on their ships, so it’s a terrific opportunity to make new friends. Many times the cuisine is locally sourced from the region you are sailing through. Most of the time, it includes wine pairings selected from local vineyards to fully immerse you in the culture of the destination, and you’ll also meet the chef who is cooking your nightly meal. A river cruise typically spends more time in the cities, towns and ports, giving you the opportunity to take a guided tour or explore an ancient castle, a famous museum, or simply stroll the streets on your own. River cruises are available year-round. Choose to go in the wintertime and enjoy the festive Christmas markets and holiday traditions of the locals, or go in the warmer months and experience outdoor festivals and concerts. There are three major river cruises companies: AmaWaterways, Avalon, and Viking. Each has unique qualities that make it what it is. Avalon’s ships feature one-of-a-kind panoramic suites with the widest windows in river cruising and with the industry’s only open-air balcony.

KETTLE RUN GRADUATE ON DECK
FOR MAJOR LEAGUE
By Shelly Norden and Emma Gray adviser and senior writer for The Chronicle at Kettle Run
A
former Kettle Run baseball player is headed to the major leagues.
On June 4, Brenton Doyle , Kettle Run Class of 2016, was drafted by the Colorado Rockies. Doyle was at home in Warrenton watching day two of the draft when he got the call. "My adviser called with the good news," Doyle said. "I didn’t have time to call or text anyone. Everyone knew I had been drafted and they started blowing up my phone.”
Ty Thorpe, Doyle’s high school coach, was not surprised when the calls started coming in about his former athlete. “Most of the questions they have been asking me are very generic; wanting to know about the kind of person he is, his work ethic, family life, and hobbies and interests,” Thorpe said.
Doyle was the first DII player to be selected in this year’s draft. Just a few days after the draft, he was on a plane headed to Grand Junction, Colorado where he will don a Grand Junction Rockies jersey. “I’m looking forward to being able to play at the next level and improve my talent,” Doyle said. “I’m going to keep working hard and work my way up the minor league system and eventually the major league system.” Doyle, who just finished his junior year at Shepherd University, had two great years on the DII team. “Putting up really good statistics in college and summer ball is what got me attention,” Doyle said. His success on these teams garnered the attention of, not one, but six major league teams.
24
JULY 2019
Thorpe added that Doyle’s success was hard earned. “Brenton was, and still is, a very fiery competitor,” Thorpe said. “He pushed himself hard and put a lot of time in on his own to get where he is today. Brenton was a good student athlete. He was able to balance his classes and time on the field.”
Doyle’s primary position is outfield, but he also plays second base, and shortstop, He spent the last two summers playing for Wilson TOBS, one of 16 teams making up the Coastal Plain League. “Last summer was the best summer of my life,” Doyle said. “It’s a very popular summer league so the fans at each game were unlike anything I’ve played in front of before. Some nights we would have up to 2,000 fans. The league also included some of the best college players in the country, so I was able to face better competition and further develop my skills.” As a player for Wilson TOBS, Doyle took on tougher competition and excelled. In 2018, he started in 53 games batting a .416, hit 16 doubles and 13 home runs, scored 62 runs and had 67 RBI, stole 22 out of 23 bases, slugged .695 and had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. In 2017, he played in 52 games with 51 starts; he earned second-team All-MEC honors posting a .327 batting average with 64 hits in 196 at-bats. Doyle also drove in 34 runs, scored 44, had 13 doubles, a triple and four home runs. He also posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage and was named to the MEC All-Tournament Team. Doyle had his first taste of success in baseball during his freshman year of high school.
“He cracked the starting lineup midway through his freshman year,” Thorpe said, "and he never looked back." Doyle helped lead his team to Kettle Run’s first appearance in the Virginia state baseball tournament; he was named the team MVP his senior year; he was also named to the All-District, All-Region and All-State teams during his junior and senior years. “Brenton played with some very talented guys, but he led us in most offensive categories his senior year,” Thorpe said. “He also is a very strong defensive player; he can get to most fly balls that others can’t, and he has a very strong arm.” Doyle credits Thorpe for helping him discover his love of the game. “You often hear stories about high school coaches ruining sports for athletes, but that isn’t the case with Thorpe,” Doyle said. “He cares about his players on and off the field and he has always pushed us to bring out the best in each other, whether it was as a person or a player.” As he moves up the baseball ladder, Doyle carries memories of his time playing high school ball with him. “Kettle Run brought a lot of incredible experiences and memories into my life,” Doyle said. “I was fortunate enough to play with an incredible group of guys, and I was lucky to call them my friends. On the day of graduation, we had one final home game against Fauquier and then went on to graduate later that day. It feels like that was just yesterday.” For athletes hoping to follow in his footsteps, Doyle had some advice. “Do not let anyone ruin the love you have for your sport,” Doyle said. “You fell in love with that sport for a reason and the opinions of others shouldn’t change your aspect of being an athlete and playing the sport that brings you happiness.””
Ready to take on Liberty High School, Kettle Run's starting lineup takes the field. Brenton Doyle, 7, can be seen here standing behind Coach Ty Thorpe. This photo was taken in the spring of 2016.

What It Was Like to Watch the
Coup Attempt Against Mikhail Gorbachev as it Unfolded? By Jason Hall
I
n August 1991, the USSR came close to becoming hardline Communist once again when members of the Soviet government attempted to wrest control from Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. The failed coup had the effect of destabilizing the Soviet Union and contributed to the dissolution of the USSR. Col. Bruce Slawter (USAF ret.) served twice as a military attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and personally witnessed key coup events while on official business as the Air Staff’s Chief of the Russia and East Europe Branch. He’ll discuss what he saw and heard, and what he thought about those events at the time and subsequently. Bruce is a Russian-speaking Vietnam combat pilot who is also a nuclear weapons expert, serving later as Director of the Office of Nuclear Warhead Protection for the U. S. Department of Energy, helping the Russians secure 84 of their highly sensitive facilities against possible terrorist attack. He has a total of 25 years of experience living or traveling in Russia and working first-hand with the Russian military. He was also Director of Soviet & European Studies at the Air Command and Staff College. This is the twenty-fourth in a series of presentations sponsored by the Cold War Museum, in cooperation with Old Bust Head Brewing Company, featuring expert eyewitnesses to significant Cold War events and activities. Presentations occur at the Brewery, followed by special access to the Museum (next door) with a tour for event participants.
