Spring is upon us! Although with a winter season that was mostly absent of, well…winter, nice weather never seemed too far away. While I love winter and being “trapped” in the house as big, fuzzy flakes fall on the other side of the window, this year, I was content with the winter that wasn’t. For us, it meant more weekend days outside in the crisp, cool air. The signs of spring came early this year. We weren’t too far into February that I recall seeing signs of leaf buds on the trees along our road. The season of rebirth is here. I love the change of seasons and this one in particular; the warm sun heats up the day, but the wind still whispers of winter remnants. The rose bud, dogwoods and spring flowers burst to life and everywhere we look is as beautiful as a painting. In this issue, we introduce the Kiernan family whose patriarch knows a thing or two about mixing colors to achieve the perfect hue. John, a former law enforcement personnel, left the force to focus on his art while his wife continued to serve the community as a sheriff’s deputy and is now a school resource officer. The Fauquier Family Clinic shares with us how they have been serving the community for over 25 years bringing healthcare needs to the underserved members of our community. The clinic is full of big-hearted medical professionals, volunteers and grateful patients. As a matter of fact, Rob Marino, their executive director, just celebrated 20 years with the organization! Congratulations Rob! We are lucky to have you! We also welcome updates from our favorite community Irish dancer and news from our schools and a calendar of events sure to keep your free weekends full! May the luck of the Irish be upon you this season and throughout the year!

Resident Feature
Resident Feature force, he secured big name commissions for his art, such as the Tallahassee Federal Court House and the Washington Capitals hockey team. Then the economy changed, people tightened their purse strings and luxury spending was reduced. It was then that he realized he need to pursue a job with steady pay; he found one with a remodeling company in Manassas. “Working there I had the opportunity to apply my passion for art to home design,” he says of the experience. For the last three years, John has been working for a local well-known builder: Golden Rule Builders. John’s specialty is remodeling, additions and is now designing new homes. Although he left law enforcement, it is still very much present in the home. John’s wife, Kristi, was a patrol supervisor with Fairfax County Police and retired after 23 years as a second lieutenant. Today she works as the School Resource Officer (SRO) for Warrenton Middle School. This is her second school year in the role and enjoys the interaction with the students. “It’s an important role not only because of today’s uncertain school environment but also as a way to connect with students,” she says and continues to share examples of the students she has developed relationships with who now may seek her out on a daily basis just to say hello. Although there may be another reason students seek out Officer Kiernan. “Devon Settle with the Fauquier SPCA gave me a puppy, Gracie, to socialize with the hopes of her becoming a therapy dog in the future. She has been a real asset for students who just need a break,” says Officer Kiernan.

Trompe l’oeil is a French term meaning to deceive the eye. It is an artistic technique whereby an artist creates a painting with such precision and attention to detail that the viewer could mistake it for having the likeness of a photograph, having dimension, or see materials that are not used among other deceptions. Trompe l’oeil is also an accurate description for John Kiernan. The former Southampton Village Police and Fairfax County Police Officer served on several positions to include the bike team and a SWAT team member. John served the Fairfax County Police Department for thirteen years before leaving the force because
he recognized that he did not want to wait for retirement to pursue his artistic dreams. He replaced the adrenaline rush of law enforcement with one of creativity by becoming a full-time artist. John is a talented and accomplished artist. “I paint on canvases that are seven feet tall,” he explains. “I knew if I didn’t try to pursue art as my career now, I wouldn’t be able to climb a ladder when I got older,” he adds. A true Renaissance man, his craft includes trompe l’oeil, replications of High Renaissance art, faux finishing, wood graining, and marble. In the early 2000s, not long after leaving the
Together the Kiernans have married art and law enforcement. Officer Kristi Kiernan was working at the Sully Station in Centreville on May 8, 2006 when an armed man hijacked a van, drove to the station and killed Detective Vicky Armel and Officer MPO Michael Garbarino. The suspect was shot and killed in the shootout. It was the first time the station had lost an officer in the line of duty and for the Kiernans, they lost friends and colleagues.

Oldest daughter, Katie, is in her early twenties and working as a dental assistant. She attended Lord Fairfax Community College where she began studying social work. When she realized it wasn’t for her, she took a one-year break from school and applied for a job as a dental assistant, somewhat on a whim. “It wasn’t anything I thought I could do, but I love it. I look forward to going to work every day,” she says. She has since returned to LFCC to earn her prerequisites for hygiene school.
Keri is a senior at Kettle Run High School where she is pursuing cosmetology. She works part time at Iva Bella Salon and has plans to attend LFCC to earn her license and study business. Keri hopes to open her own salon one day. This school year, she was selected to compete in SkillsUSA from her class. The competition gives students the chance to demonstrate their talent. Keri won second place at the competition. Fourth grader Kelliana is a talented artist in her own right, plays basketball, and loves the police force. Her family describes her as being extremely observant, a quality sought after for all detectives. Together the family enjoys watching Investigation Discovery, Capitals hockey and HGTV. While the house may seem full with three daughters, John and Kristi have opened their
Since 2007, the Kiernans became regular participants. I want each Police Week piece to remain exclusive,” he says.

Christine, a freshman exchange student from Shanghai is staying with the family now for the 2020 school year. “We love being exposed to other cultures,” says Kristi of the experience. “We enjoy hearing foreign languages and learning about their culture, politics, holidays, cuisine…pretty much everything,” says John. “I couldn’t talk about it for a long time,” says John, who poured his emotions from the tragedy into his art. Kristi explains that the art John created in response to the Sully Station shooting, titled The Blues, was displayed at the 2007 Police Week one year after the tragedy. Police Week is on the second week of May and honors officers killed in the line of duty.

Keri, having connected with two exchange students from Spain, will have the opportunity to see them again when she graduates as Kristi will be celebrating her graduation with a trip to Spain.

And young Kelliana, while still many years away from her high school graduation, already knows that she wants to visit Ireland when she graduates. When asked why, she simply says, “Because that’s where my father’s family is from.”
March is generally the time for better weather, listing homes for sale and people outside working on their lawns. Dawn’s concept is focused on Simple Curb Appeal Ideas for Homeowners and Sellers. Most of these ideas cost less than $300 to do.
Finally, Gracie, the Wheaten Terrier, also calls the Kiernan house home, along with a Jack Russell Terrier and two German Shepherds. Three cats also reside somewhere in the home.

Charity Spotlight
Fauquier Free Clinic:
Serving the Underprivileged By Caroline Riley
“The clinic has made a difference in my life because I couldn’t afford to pay for appointments and medication often enough. I’m more physically and mentally stable with the medications I need. I have so much more peace of mind knowing that all the wonderful people here are looking out for me.” - Jessica T.
“The most important result— is that Fauquier Free Clinic (could) continue to provide integrated health care to its patients. The willingness of the staff and volunteers to undertake this complex process has been heartening.” - Board Member, Jan Selbo
The counseling and education they deliver, the medication they provide, and the hands-on professional treatment from their volunteers and staff have an unequivocal, immediate impact on the health of these families.
On the medical side, the clinic is just like visiting a regular doctor’s office. It is the place to go when patients have an earache, a toothache, diabetes, hypertension or the flu. Those in need of a mammogram, lab work, a flu shot diagnostic testing, medication, referral to a specialist, or a follow-up from a hospital visit can utilize the medical care staff as well.
The Fauquier Free Clinic recognizes that access to care leads directly to improved community health. Who they serve... The free clinic provides integrated care to residents of Fauquier and Rappahannock counties who meet household income requirements. Prior to Virginia’s Medicaid expansion, there were approximately 8,000 people, under the age of 65, living without health insurance in Fauquier and Rappahannock counties alone. In January of 2019, approximately 2,000 additional people became eligible for Medicaid in these two respective counties.
Staff and volunteers of the free clinic
The Fauquier Free Clinic is a local non-profit, dedicated to the mission of serving the Fauquier and Rappahannock communities by providing comprehensive medical, dental and mental health care to eligible residents.
Patient services…
Dental care patients can receive emergency and preventive care including comprehensive exams, fillings, extractions, X-rays and cleanings. This allows individuals without dental insurance to help prevent tooth decay, gum disease and care for their overall oral health. Additionally, oral surgery and denture assistance is offered on a limited basis. Finally, the mental health care team provides comprehensive mental health support for their patients, including counseling, tele-psychiatry and medication management. While emergency services are not offered at the clinic, they will connect individuals experiencing a mental health emergency to their partners at the Rappahannock/Rapidan Community Services Board.
Fauquier Free Clinic Executive Director, Rob Marino
“A community cannot thrive and succeed unless health care, education and employment opportunities reach everyone” - Executive Director, Rob Marino
They are committed to their vision of creating a community where all individuals, regardless of income, have the resources they need to be healthy. If they are unable to provide the service a patient needs, they will do their best to help find someone who can.
Over the course of 26 years, the Fauquier Free Clinic has played a vital role in serving the under-privileged segment of Fauquier and Rappahannock counties. With the time, talent and resources of their contributors, staff members and volunteers, they have made a meaningful difference in the lives of so many people— without the Fauquier Free Clinic, many low-income residents would have no primary health care at all.
If you would like to get involved with this incredible organization as a volunteer or contributor, please contact info@ fauquierfreeclinic.org or call 540-347-0394 to learn more.
What’s ahead… Looking forward, the Fauquier Free Clinic is continuously evolving to better serve the needs of others. They will continue to raise awareness
Why their work matters… The Fauquier Free Clinic empowers local families who cannot afford health insurance or health care to access the resources they need to be healthy. Without their services, patients in need of maintenance medications would be forced to go without it. Small problems that could be readily treated would turn into larger problems that could require a hospital stay. Sick children could not participate fully in school and working parents would lose crucial income and potentially lose their jobs.
about Virginia’s Medicaid insurance program and encourage community members to check their eligibility status. Additionally, they will focus on education, in order to help, inform and support their patients in taking proactive health measures— such as smoking cessation and diet and lifestyle changes. Most importantly, they will continue to provide comprehensive medical, dental and mental health care to the people who need it.

Kettle Run FFA Upcoming Activities By Tonja Romero
Hardscaping Inspiration By John Gorg When planning an outdoor project for your home your considerations will include how you plan to use the space, what parts of your yard are conducive to landscape construction, and what features it will have. After the decisions about layout of the space, the choice of material for construction needs to be made. Trees and plants can be chosen from personal favorites, lists of suggested species for our climate, and new introductions that promise bigger blooms or deeper fall color. For the patio, walkway, fireplace or planter, in what has come to be known as “hardscaping”, you have many choices as well. Natural stone is very durable and can’t be beat for beauty. For flatwork (think patios, landings, walks) flagstone, installed in either irregular arrangements or in dimensional patterns, is a staple. The most popular flagstone product is Pennsylvania Bluestone consisting of blues, greys and greens with the occasional streaks of tan or red. The usual application is over a reinforced concrete base and it can also be used for wall caps and step treads so your landscape elements can flow continuously together. Numerous other flagstone products in varied colors are available. For veneer applications (think vertical surfaces on step risers, retaining walls, planters and seat walls) natural stone choices are plentiful. Styles range from fieldstone patterns, to arrangements of smooth river stones, to stone with a “stacked” appearance without visible mortar joints. Numerous retailers offer cultured (manufactured) stone choices that are almost indistinguishable from natural stone and are lightweight for easier setting.
Another major player in the hardscaping market is interlocking concrete pavers and wall blocks. When properly constructed over a compacted gravel base and a sand or fine-aggregate setting bed, pavers are a very durable choice for our climate. The modular construction allows for relief of the pressures that build up under all pavement types from the expansion and contraction of clay soils due to the freeze/thaw cycle. Pavers are suitable for all flatwork applications including driveways and parking areas. The available patterns and color blends are quite expansive and, more-and-more, landscape designers are inlaying stripes of contrasting color for borders, accents and space dividers. The complexity and variation of patterns once found only in tilework is now available for outdoor living spaces. Even a modest backyard patio can really gain visual appeal from varied textures and colors to set-off edges, define a grilling area, or highlight a planter or water feature. Paver manufacturers also offer many complimentary products for vertical applications and special features. Segmental wall blocks can create seat walls, retaining structures and the like and similar detail to pavers can be incorporated into the construction with courses of block or capstones of contrasting color and texture. Monolithic step units, edge stones to delineate beds, and pre-fabricated structures such as fire pits and grill islands are also available to incorporate into your landscape in textures and colors to match your choice of material for your patio or walkway – so the sky is the limit to create a fabulous outdoor oasis! Many local garden centers and stone retailers have display gardens of these product choices for your inspiration. A landscape architect or professional landscape designer can always assist with a custom outdoor living plan that will include landscape and hardscape elements. You will gain the benefit of their experience, design sense and knowledge of budgeting, construction and phasing for your home’s outdoor living and entertaining space.

Update on Brookside Neighbors March 2019 Feature Family Member: Garet Zagorski By Kristin Zagorski
Six New Year’s resolutions that can make your home more efficient in 2020
2.
Homeowners in Northern Virginia can save energy and money by following these tips
Turn down the thermostat: Set it to 68 degrees and leave it there. Forty-one percent of a home’s energy use comes from heating and cooling, so putting on a sweater instead of turning up the temperature can offer substantial savings.
3.
Reverse ceiling fan rotation: Heat rises, but reversing the fan creates a backdraft that pushes warm air down.
4.
Install a tankless water heater: Traditional water heaters keep a tank of water heated to a set temperature around the clock, whether anyone’s using it or not. More efficient tankless water heaters deliver hot water on demand when you need it.
By Heather Appleton Here are six New Year’s resolutions for homeowners who want to increase their energy efficiency in 2020. Following these tips can help reduce utility costs and wasted energy in 2020. “These tips can help anyone reduce their utility costs and the amount of energy they waste in 2020,” said Michael Appleton of Appleton Campbell. “The start of a new year is a great time to start replacing bad habits with good ones, and with the coldest part of winter on the way, you’ll be able to see immediate results without investing a lot of time or money.” Appleton offers six simple tips homeowners can implement for a more energy efficient 2020: 1.
Replace incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs: LED light bulbs are one of the quickest ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency. They use approximately 75% less electricity than incandescent bulbs and last significantly longer.
Garet has been Irish dancing up a storm, all over the world! In 2018, Garet traveled to Spain and became the European champion under 8. His travels also took him to Florida where he became the North American champion, to England where he won the Great Britain championships for the second time, and finally to Houston, Texas where he won the Regional championships, also for the second time. 2019 brought trips to England twice, where Garet won the British nationals, and he became the 3-time champion of the Great Britain Championships. He also went to Vancouver Canada and won the North American championships for the second consecutive year. Garet won his third regional title in National Harbor this past December. Garet has a total of 11 titles, all before he turned 10 years old this past January.
5.
Install a humidifier: The right amount of moisture in the air can make a room feel more comfortable at a lower temperature. Portable humidifiers make a small difference, but professionally installed systems offer significant efficiency benefits.
6.
In January, Garet made his third consecutive trip to Columbus Ohio to compete in the Academy Championships. He danced against six other regional and national champions, boys and girls, and he won for the third year in a row. This competition is always a high standard and draws competitors from all over North America.
Get a professional heating tune-up: Proper maintenance will give homeowners peace of mind and confidence that they will have access to a fully functioning heating system when the next winter storm passes through.
Garet competed in Ireland for the first time on Feb 16th. The competition is the prestigious All Ireland Championships, where dancers come from all over the world to compete in Killarney Ireland. The ultimate goal for this motivated Irish dancer is to win the World championships. Dancers must be 10 years old, turning 11 to first attend the competition. Garet will continue training for this event which will be April 2021.
“Some of these suggestions are literally as easy as changing a light bulb,” Michael Appleton said. “Being efficient doesn’t necessarily mean a major investment or an abrupt change in lifestyle. Just remaining mindful about your energy use and your utility bill can inspire small changes that add up to a big difference.”
Garet likes the friends he dances with, the fun of traveling and making new friends, the thrill of competing, and the joy of having his mom as his teacher-most of the time!
When Summer Hits, Math Skills Slip! During summer, kids lose up to 3 months of their math skills. In only 2-3 sessions per week, your child can avoid this “summer slide” and start the school year strong.
JOHN S. Nice to have a company that can do everything - plumbing, HVAC, and electrical - and save the customer time and money. I recommend Appleton Campbell highly.

How American Ambassadors Deal with Intelligence Agencies By Jason Hall Outside the United States, and in some places even within the country, American diplomats are viewed by many as spies, and our embassies are considered nests of spies. As with many myths, there is a tiny kernel of truth here, but not what one might think. Diplomats do gather information about the countries to which they’re assigned, and there are intelligence officials assigned to our diplomatic missions. The truth, however, is less dramatic, as a career diplomat with a military intelligence background will relate. Ambassadors, as representatives of the President, accredited to the host country head of state, are the senior American government officials in a country, responsible for and presiding over all US Government programs and personnel—with the exception of military personnel under the command of a Geographic military command. With a few exceptions, all intelligence operations in the country must receive the ambassador’s concurrence, and some really sensitive operations are shared only on a need-to-know basis. A savvy ambassador finds ways to mitigate the negative impact of operations if they’re exposed, and will establish working relationships with intelligence agencies and personnel—as he or she must with the military—to ensure that everything that’s done supports U.S. national interests, and contributes to U.S. national security. A series of anecdotes from more than 30 years serving as a diplomat, including two assignments as ambassador, will show how diplomacy and intelligence can coexist.

WUSA9 came to the Vint Hill Farm Station to feature the winery and Cold War Museum in a piece in February. The history of the Farm Station is well documented. News of the Japanese surrender to end WWII was first heard there and specifically at the space where the Vint Hill Winery now occupies. The winery, in honor of the historic event, named their signature red wine “Enigma” as a tribute to the encryption machine.

Jason Hall, executive director of the Cold War Museum shared with reporters the story behind the Vint Hill Farm Station:
This is the 35th in a series of presentations sponsored by the Museum, in cooperation with Old Bust Head Brewing Company, featuring eyewitnesses to, and other experts on, significant Cold War events and activities. Presentations occur at the Brewery, followed by special access to the Museum (next door) with a tour for event participants.
I hope you enjoy this recipe! Leave some of these bars out and maybe the leprechaun will be too busy eating them to make too much mischief.
With St. Paddy’s Day just around the corner, I thought I’d offer up something sweet, festive, and appropriately green. But before you reach for the food coloring, read on. In my recipes, I always opt for the most natural ingredients I can. If I’m using extracts or coloring, I really try to find a natural alternative. One of my favorite ways to add color to my baked goods - especially to glazes is with freeze-dried fruit. But green is not a color that’s easy to find in that department. So when I was brainstorming an idea for a green dessert, my thoughts quickly turned to Matcha powder. It doesn’t get much greener or more natural than that. Matcha powder is just very finely ground green tea leaves. It has a pleasant, grassy, slightly bitter flavor and is traditionally whisked with hot water and served as a hot, frothy beverage. While I must confess, I’m not a big fan of it in its traditional form, I love baking with it. It lends a beautiful, soft green color to baked goods, ice cream recipes, puddings, glazes, and frostings. Make sure you are sourcing a good quality, culinary grade matcha to bake with, no need to spend your money on the top shelf, ceremonial grade Matcha. As for these cookie bars, they are so simple and have just the perfect chewy texture. Feel free to add sprinkles or chips to the dough. I kept the flavoring in the cookie bars and the frosting the same: a combo of vanilla and almond extracts. I especially like the almond extract with the matcha. The two flavors play nicely off one another and the almond tones down the bitterness of the matcha without completely masking it. This is an American Buttercream, which is the simplest of all buttercreams. It starts with room temperature butter and powdered sugar and a splash of milk. From there, you can flavor it and color it any way you like. The most important thing is to have nice, soft, room temperature butter. Don’t be tempted to microwave your butter to speed up the process or you’ll end up with a greasy mess in your mixing bowl – trust me. Plan ahead for this and leave your butter out on the counter for several hours or even overnight if your house isn’t too hot. Also, I usually don’t bother with sifting ingredients and find it to be a totally unnecessary step in cake and cookie recipes. Frosting recipes, however, are another story, especially when they involve cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and/or matcha. These ingredients make my sift list. Now, I’m not going to make you sift, but let this be your warning: If you don’t sift the powdered sugar and matcha you will have lumps in your buttercream.
1.
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8-inch or 9-inch square baking pan with parchment paper, making sure to leave enough overhang on the sides. Set aside.
2.
In a large bowl using a hand-held mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the softened butter for about 1 minute on medium speed. Get it nice and smooth, then add the sugar on medium speed until fluffy and light in color. Beat in egg, egg yolk, and vanilla. Scrape down the sides as needed.
3.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cornstarch. Add to mixing bowl and mix on low speed until combined. The dough is quite thick.)
4.
Press the cookie dough evenly into the prepared baking pan. Wet hands make this much easier.
5.
Bake for 25 minutes or until very lightly browned on top and edges.
6.
Don’t overbake. You want them soft and chewy. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
Matcha Buttercream Ingredients: 13 tablespoons room temperature butter 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar 2 tablespoons matcha powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon almond extract 1-2 tablespoon milk 1.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, mix butter on medium high speed until light and fluffy.
2.
Next, sift in powdered sugar and matcha, (it helps to remove the bowl from the mixer base and just sift it straight in. No need to dirty an extra dish). Then add extracts and milk, return mixing bowl to mixer base, and mix on lowest setting until combined.
3.
Increase speed to medium high and mix until buttercream is light and fluffy. Stop to scrape down the sides a couple of times.
4.
Spread generously onto cooled cookie bars.
