Dear Residents, I am hoping June turns out to be a wonderful month for all of us. There is so much excitement about the end of the school year and graduation ceremonies, as well as a day to celebrate Dads! May your days be spent making memories with family and friends. This month we are featuring the Rook family. Mary and Tim, along with their five children, love their neighborhood in Manassas Park and all the amenities of Historic Manassas. You may know them also as the owners of Premier Martial Arts right outside of town. They have a great story about meeting for the first time before they really knew each other. Our charity story is the Sweet Julia Grace Foundation, founded by Sara Knight in honor of Sara and Jason Knight’s daughter Julia, who passed away in 2013 due to complications of a rare disease called I-cell. Julia lived 12 beautiful years inspiring everyone who knew her, read about her, and loved her. I know you will be inspired to help their mission of filling in the gaps for local children facing medical crisis. I asked Juliet Violett, College and Career Counselor at Osbourn High School to connect me with a few outstanding Seniors who will graduate and begin their futures of making an impact on the world around them. I hope you read about these wonderful teens and cheer them to success.

Enjoy the sunshine!

RESIDENT FEATURE

We would like to thank Novant Health UVA Health System for sponsoring this month’s feature story.

The Rook Family: When Fates Collide

By Christine Craddock Photos by The Little Photo Shop

T

hroughout their lives, Mary and Tim Rook seemed to follow paths that paralleled each other, unbeknownst to them at the time. They were both raised in Manassas, but outside city lines of each other. While Mary attended Loch Lomond, Tim was at Weems. When Mary went to Parkside, Tim went to Metz. When Mary was a student at what is now Unity Reed, Tim was studying at Osbourn Park. “As you can imagine, there would have been times when our paths inevitably crossed,” says Mary, “and luckily we have pinpointed one of those times.” When Mary and Tim were first dating, he told her this story. One bright, sunny day, Tim was cruising around Mathis Avenue in his white cougar, donning a pair of his coolest sunglasses, when he pulled up to a red light next to a car full of girls. When the girls noticed him, they smiled and he smiled back. When the light turned green, the girls moved forward and so did Tim, not realizing he was in a turn lane. When he smashed into the bumper of the car in front of him, the girls drove away laughing. As he relayed the details of the incident, a spark lit in Mary’s brain. She asked him if the car was a light blue hatchback. He answered yes. She asked if there were 3 girls in the car. Again he answered yes. It was then she realized it was her in the car with her friends and she remembered seeing this happen. But then Tim had a question. He asked Mary why the girls were laughing at him to which she replied that they couldn’t believe their beauty had caused a car accident. She then apologized for distracting him by being too gorgeous. Fast forward to today finds Mary and Tim living life in Manassas Park with their five children in a beautiful community of kind people, they say. They have loved the

schools and the location has always felt like home. After working in many martial arts businesses from Manassas to Maryland and out west, Tim decided it was time to open his own martial arts school in the community that had given him so much throughout his life. Tim and Mary opened their first location, then found out they were pregnant with their first child after trying for 2 years. They now own and operate three Premier Martial Arts schools in the area. Martial arts plays a huge role in the family’s life, even the children train in their Premier schools. When Mary used to train more regularly, she’d bring a baby to watch on the sidelines. This resulted in a few comical experiences of a Rook toddler copying some grown-up martial arts moves on the sidelines at the school.

Tim’s passion for business runs deep, and he spends his free time studying marketing and leadership growth. He also has become recently involved with fight choreography, acting, and stuntwork with some local film artists. Although most of her time is devoted to their children, Mary says she uses what is left of her imagination to write Young Adult sci-fi and fantasy novels and poetry. But that isn’t the extent of Mary’s creative talents. She loves to sing, at home and as part of the choir at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she also volunteers as a Sunday School teacher. Each of the Rook children holds a special talent for questioning their parents’ decisions, says Mary. The home is filled with the sounds of kids singing, Nintendo game playing, princess parties, and pretend campouts in the living room. There are also pets in the family! Charlie, a 2-year old Ball Python was reluctantly added after much convincing to Mary. Then there’s Chloe, a 13-year-old lab mix, who became a treasured member of the family after Tim found her abandoned as a puppy. “She is now an incredibly sweet and gentle girl who adores our big family filled with littles,” says Mary. When out and about, the Rook family enjoys Old Town Manassas events, especially the Railroad Festival, and

town parades that Premier Martial Arts students usually participate in. Mary is a member of Spilled Ink and Write by the Rails, two local writing groups. She invites anyone to join in at meetings at Jirani’s when the pandemic allows it. But right at home in their neighborhood, they simply have to come outside with the kids and some sidewalk chalk to gather with friends while the children cover themselves with colorful dust. And while they feel their family motto should be something meaningful, like ‘Always speak with kindness’ - Mary says it would be more along the lines of ‘Boogers are for tissues, not walls’.

OUTSTANDING Osbourn Students By Christine Craddock

W

hen asked to nominate a few standout Seniors at Osbourn this year, Juliet Violett, College and Career Counselor at the school, submitted Marco Seaberg and Sage McAndrew. "Marco is a leader among his peers," says Juliet Violett. His accomplishments include awards for Student of the Year, Most Dedicated in Marching Band, and 4.0 Honor Roll. Violett describes Sage as a gifted singer who won the Manassas Education Foundation Fine Arts Scholarship sponsored by Imagine Design.

Marco Seaberg:

I’ve been able to step my toe into a lot of Osbourn groups. I have been drum major of the marching band, cast in the school musicals, and President of National Honor Society. I’m excited to take all of my experiences and ideas with me to college. I’m planning to study at James Madison University with a major in English. I want to become a high school teacher and I’d love to teach at a smaller school... maybe even Osbourn!

Sage McAndrew:

I am honored to be called an outstanding student. I am proud of myself for keeping up my grades and my involvement in extracurricular activities. Not only was I able to maintain a 4.0 GPA, but I was also involved in several theater productions, show choir competitions and performances, and maintained the position as the Historian for Tri-M Music Honor Society. I will be attending Belmont University in Nashville, TN in the fall to study Commercial Music with an emphasis in Vocal Performance. At the moment I plan to have a business as a Private Vocal Coach, teaching individual students how to improve their voice and prepare for a life in music. Aside from that, I also plan to be a performer and music composer. My constant dedication to music has inspired me for this path in life. I have been in vocal lessons since I was 11, and have been in choir all my school years. I was constantly trained to audition for any choir event or performance and that strengthened my skills as a performer and musician.

I think English would be an amazing class to teach because you have a lot of opportunities with it. I'd love to take material that I've learned from theatre and see how it could be used in an English class. I want to teach a class where everyone can take something from the class, no matter what profession they go on to do.

Music has truly brought me out of my comfort zone and helped me appreciate the beauty in life. Each song has a meaning behind it, and can connect with the listener in many different ways. Music allows me to express myself when I have no other way of doing so. Without music my life would not be complete.

I'd love to thank Mrs. Rubach because she's taught me a lot about the kind of teacher I want to be.

I would like to thank Mrs. Angela Easley for being my mentor through high school. Not only was she a wonderful teacher, but she was my number one supporter and helped me navigate through the challenges of life. She will always be my person to go to, and a connection like that is something so valuable to me.

Let’s Dance in the Rain

By Sara Knight

The Sweet Julia Grace Foundation (SJGF), founded in 2014, and based in Bristow, VA, is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization. SJGF was founded by Sara Knight in honor of Sara and Jason Knight’s daughter Julia, who passed away in 2013 due to complications of a rare disease called I-cell. Julia lived 12 beautiful years inspiring everyone who knew her, read about her, and loved her. Despite the storms she faced, Julia learned how to “Dance In The Rain.” She lived in the moment, made life SWEET, and filled hearts with JOY…just by being her. The Foundation’s Mission is to Bless, Celebrate, and Love children who are seriously ill, have special needs, or are currently facing a medical crisis. We grant wishes that bring joy and change lives, fill in gaps other services are unable to fill, and provide support with day-to-day needs for families going through the unimaginable with their child. The gifts we provide bring comfort and happiness; and oftentimes dramatically improve and change children’s lives.

We call the children we serve Raindancers! What is a Raindancer?

The children served through SJGF are lovingly given the name “Raindancers,” because just like Julia Grace, they are not waiting for the storms to pass before they “Dance in the Rain.”

SJGF Goes Beyond

The support given by SJGF often goes BEYOND a one-time gift to a child facing a medical crisis. Gifts and special support are given to both the siblings and parents, and programs have been developed by SJGF so families can be properly supported for the long haul. Founder Sara Knight often tells a family when she meets them for the first time: “I hope you know you are stuck with us now.” To which they often reply, “Good!”

SJGF is Unique

Families in crisis hear ‘NO’ way too often and can spend months cutting through all the ‘red tape’ when it comes to the resources they desperately count on- like insurance and governmental support. We do our best to keep things as simple as we can, and say “YES” as often as possible!

Join the Dance

There are many wonderful ways for you to ‘Join The Dance’ and help support our mission! You can sign up for specific ways to give your individual time and talents, to give back as a group, or to help with fundraising events. Our volunteers make it possible for us to help children, in the midst of a storm, dance in the rain. Because of volunteers like you, we can do what we do! Let’s dance! MAYOR’S CORNER In this month when we honor Dads, I am thankful to celebrate my dear old Dad. Most people know he was born on the Jennie Dean site, has been a lifelong Manassas resident, and is now 87 years young. When I think of everything my Dad has endured, there are three words that come to mind: Strength, Courage and Wisdom…he really is all three of those things. He was the one who taught me to read and to ride a bike, and encouraged me in whatever adventures I was getting into. He gave me my quick wit and sense of humor, and he’s still pretty sharp! I not only wish him a Happy Father’s Day but wish he and my Mom a happy 62nd wedding anniversary in June as well! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to all Dads, Step-Dads, Brothers, Uncles, and Like-a-Dads! Please kick back, relax and enjoy your special day, because you deserve every minute of it. June is also such a great month for family gatherings and

high school and college graduations. Although I don’t have any graduations this year in my immediate family, we’re looking forward to next year, when my daughter will graduate from Osbourn High School. Congratulations to all of this year’s grads, from kindergarten to college! Representing the City when meeting with various businesses, and meeting and speaking with our residents is the highlight of many days. Recently I was the guest speaker for the Bull Run Rotary Club, and I took a flight over the City thanks to Commonwealth Aviation. We welcomed Governor Northam, who visited our successful vaccine clinic, and I visited Lockheed Martin and learned about their T.A.L.E.N.T. (Training Aspiring Locals to Engineer a New Tomorrow) Apprentice program. Please follow the City on Facebook or by getting on the website www.manassasva.gov to get information about all of the events happening in and around the City, especially since some of the COVID restrictions will be relaxed. I look forward to seeing you!

Your Mayor, Michelle Davis-Younger

COMMUNITY SUBMISSION

Némya McGill-Veloso

Awarded the OHS Minority Student Scholarship By Christine Craddock

T

he recipient of the Osbourn High School Minority Scholarship is Némya McGill-Veloso, says Juliet Violett, College and Career Counselor. The scholarship, in its first year, was funded by an anonymous donor who values the diversity of the Osbourn Community. Violett explains that “the spirit of this award is one of eliminating barriers for minority students who have demonstrated significant resiliency, service, and scholarship.” An Interview with Némya McGill-Veloso: 1. How did you learn about the scholarship? The scholarship awards $2,000 to a high school senior seeking higher education. Ms. Violett informed me of the opportunity and sent me the application. The application asked for two responses, in which I wrote two essays for. I described my financial need and how I would give back to my community after college.

2. What does this scholarship mean to you? This scholarship means the world to me. I am truly honored to have been given this award, as it makes receiving a college education more accessible to me. Due to my financial status, going to college was unrealistic without aid. Growing up, my mother pushed me to work hard in school. I did not understand it then, but I now know that it was to prepare me to excel in high school courses so I could apply for scholarship opportunities like these. The moment I learned of my winnings was a very “full-circle” moment. 3. What are your future plans for education and possible career? In the fall, I will be attending Virginia Commonwealth University, where I will be majoring in psychology. As for a career, I hope to become a psychologist. In high school, I attended therapy and psychiatry; however, moments and events during my sessions made me realize that there is much cultural unawareness in the field. Personally, I felt that the approach to my care did not correctly empathize with my fact of being a Black and Filipino woman. There was a lack of empathy, and my treatment was generalized. In addition to this, there is also a stigma of mental health in Black, Brown, and Asian communities. In college and in my career, I want to learn and act on ways in which I can spread the message that mental health is important. Before treatment, I was uneducated of my conditions, and when I learned of them, I was ashamed. This feeling came from the presumed feeling in my household that having a mental illness or disorder made you weak, or simply the fact that the conditions weren’t real. The stigmas prevented me from seeking treatment sooner. I want to prevent other adolescents and youth from feeling this way. I am determined to become a person that spreads a good message of asking for help, while also giving that efficient help that is empathetic and aware of others’ backgrounds.

I am all about healthy treats especially when I can sneak in some veggies and have my daughter gobble them up. Not only is this one of my daughter's favorites but it's one that my husband and I enjoy almost every week. It is gluten and dairy free and uses honey as the sweetener (win, win, and win). The shredded zucchini not only adds extra nutrients but extra moisture as well. This the perfect snack for morning, afternoon or evening. Hope you enjoy!

Blueberry Zucchini Breakfast Bars By Gina Sinatro Mitchell

Ingredients

• 2-1/2 cups of old fashioned oats, divided • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1 cup milk, any kind (I use unsweetened almond milk) • 1/2 a cup of mashed banana (about 2 small or 1 large) • 1/4 cup of honey • 1/4 a cup of coconut oil, melted • 1 egg • 1 tsp vanilla • Heaping cup of blueberries (I use frozen) • 1 cup of shredded zucchini

Preheat oven to 350 degrees then spray 8x8 or 9x13 baking pan with nonstick spray and set aside.

Add 1 cup of old fashioned oats to a food processor or blender then process until oats have turned into flour. Set aside. All three Novant Health UVA Health System acute care facilities once again receive ‘A’ grades for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group. WARRENTON, Va., April 29, 2021 – Novant Health UVA Health System, an integrated network of physician clinics, outpatient services and medical centers in northern and central Virginia, today was awarded three ‘A’ grades from The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2021 Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing hospitals’ efforts to protect patients from harm and provide safer healthcare. This recognition comes on the heels of the three ‘A’ grades Novant Health UVA Health System earned in The Leapfrog Group’s fall 2020 Hospital Safety Grade.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to all general hospitals across the country and is updated every six months. It is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care. For spring 2021, Novant Health UVA Health System’s Prince William Medical Center, Haymarket Medical Center and Culpeper Medical Center were all awarded ’A’ grades. Novant Health UVA Health System was in the top third of hospitals nationwide – and among only 33 hospitals in the state of Virginia – to receive ‘A’ safety grades. “We’re honored to receive system-wide recognition from The Leapfrog Group for consecutive grading periods,” said Al Pilong, chief executive officer, Novant Health UVA Health System. “This recognition proves the continued resiliency of our team members, physicians and advanced practice providers and their dedication to patient

safety throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” Pilong added. “It is an honor to see our team’s commitment to safety and quality recognized and have all three medical centers named among the safest hospitals in the United States.” “An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president and chief executive officer, The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but Novant Health UVA Health System shows us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.” Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
