Welcome Welcome to the first issue of the Successful Women in Business magazine, celebrating and showcasing the work and businesses of successful women across Devon, Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset, and highlighting the wonderful 2019 Successful Women Awards’ sponsors and their finalists.

A

key part of our awards’ season is the launch at the Successful Women Conference, which this year took place on International Women’s Day and featured a number of workshops that delegates could get involved in. We have brought some of the conference atmosphere to you with articles from many of the workshop presenters and photos from the day. Members of the Successful Women in Business Network, or #swibtribe, are the lifeblood of the network, and you can get a glimpse into what goes on every month on page 12. Don’t forget to check out our members’ directory on page 60 too. Each year, the network links with a great charity, and this year we are thrilled to be supporting MicroLoan Foundation, which enables some of the poorest women to work their way out of poverty by providing training and micro loans. Read more about the fantastic work they do on page 8. The incredible knowledge and experience of our many members will be featured regularly in forthcoming issues of the magazine – another benefit of membership of #swibtribe.

I get a tremendous buzz out of seeing the encouragement and collaboration that goes on between members, and we hope that this magazine will help to support that, as it brings together members across the four counties in which we currently hold our events. Finally, a huge thank you to every member of #swibtribe for always being so generous towards each other, and also to everyone who has nominated a woman for these awards. We always receive so much positive feedback from nominees, and here’s a good example: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been nominated for my first ever award. Applying was a great experience too. I love reflecting on my journey.” I can’t wait for the awards ceremony. Being involved in an event that creates such excitement and celebration has to be one of the best jobs in the world. And, as always, don’t forget that ‘success is a state of mind’.

Empowering the poorest and most vulnerable women to work their own way out of poverty is at the very heart of what charity MicroLoan Foundation does

enables these women to alleviate the pressures of living in poverty. MicroLoan’s Loan & Training Officers deliver regular business training sessions to these women, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge to run a successful business. All of the training sessions provided are taught through song, dance and role-play in local languages. This enables the charity to reach those who would ordinarily be excluded. The income generated from their businesses enables parents to send their children to school, provide them with regular, nutritious meals, and afford basic healthcare. MicroLoan is helping women to redefine their families’ futures.

M

icroLoan Foundation works in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe to help those living in poverty gain the opportunity to build better lives for themselves and their families. The charity provides women with financial literacy training, business support and small loans so they can start their own businesses.

Empowering women The women supported by MicroLoan Foundation live in some of the most rural and remote regions of sub-Saharan Africa, far from centres of economic activity and employment. Before joining MicroLoan, 83% of the women who the charity supports are forced to survive on just over ÂŁ1 per day, and struggle to provide the basic necessities for their families. MicroLoan works with women to have maximum social impact. Studies have proven that women are more likely to use their income to support their family. Creating a livelihood

8

#SWIBTRIBE | ISSUE 1

Since 2002, MicroLoan has reached more than 200,000 women, giving them the opportunity to change their own futures. On average, each woman the charity supports has four children. This means that more than 800,000 children are able to eat regular meals, visit the doctor if they fall ill, and get a chance to go to school.

Building brighter futures MicroLoan is committed to helping women create a lasting change in their lives. It is supporting families to build resilience against the unpredictability of their living conditions. In addition to the ongoing training and loans that the women receive, they are also taught the importance of savings. These women live hand to mouth, and it is often the first time in their lives that they have been able to save and look ambitiously towards their futures. Women are encouraged to make regular savings to provide them with a safety net, as insurance against future crop failure, family illness and other unexpected circumstances. This gives the women confidence in their abilities to navigate the unpredictability of their living conditions. It is MicroLoan’s ambition and goal to support as many women and their families as possible. To date, it has reached more than a million lives, but there are millions more who need their support. You can help reach them. To find out more about MicroLoan Foundation and its vital work, please visit www.microloanfoundation.org.uk.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome “I’m a fraud and will be found out…”“It’s just luck that I got that job/promotion/success…” Does this sound like you? Well you are not alone, as Kären Jamieson of Oyster Coaching and Consultancy explains

I

mposter Syndrome, or Imposter Experience, is a response that we have to situations or events. Typically it happens when we are pushed out of our comfort zone, triggering negative thoughts, feelings and fears. Almost 75% of us will encounter it at some point in our lives; in fact, highly successful people including Sheryl Sandberg, Tom Hanks, Maya Angelou and Michelle Obama have all said that they have experienced it. But what can you do about it? How can you overcome it? Follow these six simple steps, and you will soon start to notice a difference:

1.

Acknowledge your Imposter Beast. Call it out, give it a name. Mine is Nobut.

2.

Consider your accomplishments. List them (there are usually more than you think). Look at what you have achieved, and celebrate your successes.

3.

Think about the language you use about yourself. Do you ignore your successes and play down your achievements? Reframing your language can make a difference. Notice the thoughts that you have. Jot these down so you’re aware of them. Changing your language and noticing your thoughts is the start of making a difference to how you feel about yourself.

5.

Finally, be kind to yourself, and remember that when we are stressed or tired, we do tend to revert to our old behaviour, but keep practising and remember it can take 66 days of consistent action to start to form a new habit.

“Consider your accomplishments. Look at what you’ve achieved, and celebrate your successes” It’s a learning process and has to be worked on, but it is amazing what a difference all of these points can make with practice.

Think about your triggers – those things that flip you into Imposter Mode. What is your response to these – how do you behave and think? Note the physical and emotional effects, and think about how you can change your responses. Plan out some new responses, practise them, and have them in your toolkit to pull out when needed. Breathe! Standing up straight and taking a moment to breathe increases positive energy, and gives you the time to gather yourself and dig into your toolkit to respond to a situation differently. Afterwards, reflect on this and add the new response to your toolkit so that it becomes a new way of going forward.

Business networking – why bother? With so many new businesses building their brands on social media, SWIB founder Gill Donnell is often asked: “Why should I bother with faceto-face networking, and why women-only events?”

joint ventures or collaborations. By networking regularly, pushing yourself to talk to different people, you can increase your confidence as well as your personal and business contacts. The life of a solopreneur can often be an isolated one, so surrounding yourself with a positive network can inspire and motivate, and help in those challenging times. Got an issue that you need help with? The chances are that someone in your group will have been there and found a way through that particular minefield. Networking is about growth and personal and professional development, surrounding yourself with positive influences, ensuring that you remain in love with your business, not frustrated.

T

The Successful Women in Business Network

hese days, having a good idea as well as a great business model is not enough to make you stand out from the crowd. One way to do that is to expand your business network, and yes, you can do that effectively online, but there are a host of other benefits to getting out of the office/home, and building business relationships with other business owners. Effective business networking means building trusting relationships with like-minded people; it is not necessarily about who is at the meeting, but what networks do those people have that you can also tap into? The best way to do that? Get to know them – build a relationship, even a friendship, and they are much more likely to introduce you to others who can help you or your business. Wikipedia defines business networking as ‘a socioeconomic business activity by which businesspeople and entrepreneurs meet to form business relationships and to recognise, create, or act upon business opportunities, share information and seek potential partners for ventures’. For me, the important parts of that paragraph are ‘form business relationships’ and ‘create business opportunities’, and those opportunities may not be merely business sales. They could be writing or speaking opportunities,

12

In the #swibtribe, building relationships and creating collaborations are key not just to members’ success, but also to what has become the success of the network itself. We do not ‘lock professional slots’, which means that there could be two or three solicitors, accountants or interior designers in one group. In fact, across our three Devon and Somerset groups, we have ten very different coaches, all of whom meet regularly, work together and have created great collaborations. To address the ‘why women-only events’ question, most of our members also attend mixed networking events, but most will say that through SWIB not only do they get business results, but also that our events create a relaxing environment, with no pressure to perform, plus the opportunity to have some fun whilst learning through our development sessions. So, why not come along and visit any of our six groups across Devon, Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset? Here’s a quick look at what goes on at each group.

Taunton

Dorchester

Up the M5 and two miles from junction 25, you will find the stunning Mount Somerset Hotel and Spa, a luxury 19-bedroom regency country house, part of the Eden Hotel Collection. Taunton is one of our founding groups and also the location for our twice-yearly Regional Afternoon Teas for our Devon and Somerset groups. Our Taunton members are involved in a diverse range of business areas, such as coaching, marketing, business support, horticulture and luxury fragrance, as well as legal and financial services. Visitors are very welcome to attend a network meeting; simply book online at: www.swibtribe.com/taunton.

Successful Women HQ is based just outside Dorchester, and the original SWIB network group first met in January 2017 in Dorset’s county town. As our largest group, with 28 members from across east Somerset and west Dorset, Dorchville (Dorchester and Yeovil) gets together every month at the George Albert Hotel and Spa, a private, family-owned hotel, situated on the A37 within easy reach of both Yeovil and Dorchester. The Successful Women Conferences and Awards Ceremony have also been held at this purpose-built spa hotel, as well as our twice yearly Afternoon Teas. Join us at Dorchville at: www.swibtribe.com/dorchester.

Tiverton Our newest group meets over breakfast at the awardwinning Hartnoll Hotel, which is nestled on the edge of Exmoor National Park in the delightful Exe Valley in Devon, yet only minutes from junction 27 of the M5. Susi Titchener chairs the group, and in less than three months, Susi has created a supportive group of members who all get involved in delivering development sessions based on their respective expertise. Find out more at: www.swibtribe.com/tiverton.

Exeter Just two junctions further south on the M5 is the exit for Exeter. Our group in this lovely city meets every month at the Buckerell Lodge Hotel, set within tree-lined gardens and grounds just one mile from the heart of Exeter. An established group with 18 core members, with businesses ranging from coaching, health and wellness, financial and legal to recruitment services, you will find me in the chair every month. The #swibtribe also regularly meets up for social events, and late in 2018 even held a private viewing of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again at a local cinema. Lots of singing, crying and Prosecco involved!

Future plans

Bournemouth & Poole Further east along the Dorset coast, the combined Bournemouth and Poole group meets every month at the Hotel Royale in Bournemouth. As the Royale is part of the Oceana Hotels Bournemouth, we have the opportunity to hold our Dorset and Hampshire Regional Afternoon Teas at the group’s gorgeous Cumberland Hotel on Bournemouth’s famous East Cliff. With 20 regular members and many frequent visitors, this group is chaired by the dynamic Caroline Swaine, a phenomenal networker who regularly brokers collaborations between her loyal members. Book online at: www.swibtribe.com/bournemouth.

We have now started planning a Charity Challenge with a 7/8-day trek to Malawi in May 2020, in support of SWIB charity MicroLoan Foundation. SWIB member Eva James of Not Just Travel – Impress is organising the trip, which will see 100% of the monies raised go to the local women in Malawi. Another exciting venture will be the launch of the #swibtribe community app via the Ugenie platform. This will enable members to interact with each other, see at-a-glance the latest meetings, list their services and offers, as well as enable SWIB HQ to share content and (coming soon) an online membership. So what other reasons do you need to come and meet us? Non-members can visit any of our meetings on two occasions; come and experience the support and great collaborative environment that we create within our groups. We realise that attending any sort of event can be daunting, but guarantee you a warm welcome, as well as an opportunity to increase your business skills and develop your personal qualities.

I hope to see you at a meeting very soon.

Learning from the future

It’s an attention-grabbing phrase: ‘learning from the future’. A statement of the impossible, of course. You can’t learn from the future, because it hasn’t happened yet. Or can you? Mary Hykel Hunt might just change your mind!

M

y experience, and that of many people with whom I’ve worked in my role as an intuitive business coach and researcher in the field of human consciousness, demonstrates that we can learn from the future, quite literally. I’m not talking about just anticipating the future or second-guessing it. Nor am I suggesting you have to turn into Madame Arcati at the end of the pier. Accessing the future is based on good, demonstrable science – a fact that surprises many. Much of this scientific research is being carried out in the fields of consciousness studies and quantum mechanics. Don’t worry, I’m not about to drown you in references to scientific papers! However, if you’re interested to learn a bit more about it in layman’s terms, you can find readable write-ups about some of the astonishing findings this research has uncovered in books such as Lynne McTaggart’s The Field and Dean Radin’s Entangled Minds, as well as my own book, Learning from the Future.

our non-logical, holistic, intuitive mind – the mind that’s dismissed as woo-woo and irrational. At best, it’s seen as entertaining; at worst, valueless. Yet nothing could be further from the truth, because extraordinary things begin to happen when we get our two minds to co-operate, in our businesses as well as in our personal lives. And there are techniques and approaches that help us do just that. Coaching clients of mine have indeed learned from their Future Selves, through something we call ‘future feedback’. They’ve created more successful businesses and more contented lives as a result, because they’ve started to access extraordinary resources that they didn’t know they had. So, yes, it is possible to learn from the future. Because your mind holds more than it knows.

About Mary

“Extraordinary things happen when our two minds co-operate” What this research suggests is that we have one brain but two minds. Mind 1 is our logical, analytical mind – the one we’re used to using on an everyday basis. Mind 2 is

Inside Domestic Angels & Paxan

The brand icon that led to a global tech start-up

I

f you ever visit the ‘shed with a chandelier’, HQ to Domestic Angels Franchise and tech start-up Paxan, you will witness creative and philosophical business in action. Surrounding the usual office necessities, colourful handwritten reminders on the walls make the visions and objectives for the next three years and the company culture very clear. The success of the Dorset-based businesses is no mistake – the people behind them are driven by an infectious passion for business and the commitment to give business people control of their time, lives and money. We asked © Sasfi Hope-Ross head honcho

22

Sam Acton “How’s business?” Sam’s reply came with the energy of a child with a new toy: “Brilliant fun! I love seeing people succeed, and my franchisees delight me with their achievements every day. It’s just incredible to see that my Domestic Angels cleaning business, converted into a management franchise, enables budding entrepreneurs to have their own, home-based enterprises, and be able to do the school run and all the family stuff that is important to them, whilst growing as business leaders. These guys and gals are becoming powerhouses in their own rights, which is amazing for me to see as their franchisor and mentor.” And the excitement doesn’t end there: “Even more fun, we’re launching the software we built for the franchise on the open market this spring,” Sam explains. Paxan, short for pax animi, which means ‘peace of mind’ in Latin, delivers a simple, effective business operational solution into small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). “We’re a tech start-up! Now there’s something I never imagined myself saying a couple of years ago.”

#SWIBTRIBE | ISSUE 1

Sam has clearly surrounded herself with talented, like-minded individuals over the years, who have become her business family. Her right-hand lady, Lisa Cooper, fondly known as ‘Coops’, has worked her way up the business, and will be a director of tech start-up Paxan. We asked Lisa about her role in the businesses. “I never think to break this down; I just do what I do. I like to make everyone feel valued and looked after, offer what knowledge I have, and keep on top of the dayto-day running of the company,” Lisa tells us. “I just get in there and do it, from day-to-day housekeeping to strategy-related work. I want our franchisee partners and customers to be happy. I’m looking forward to the new challenge of Paxan, getting it out there, promoting it, watching it grow, experiencing all sorts of learning curves, and being part of something new and intuitive.”

“We’re a tech start-up! There’s something I never imagined myself saying a couple of years ago” Among the phrases and plans on the walls of this business HQ, we found ‘It’s not what we do, it’s how we make people feel’. Lisa, Sam and the shed with a chandelier made us feel energised, fascinated and quite certain that their customers, from Domestic Angels franchisees to Paxan people, are all benefitting from a truly genuine and successful formula. Social Media Hacks Social-media guru Trudy Ritsema shares three essential tricks for making sure you are definitely getting the most out of your social-media platforms

Make sure people know where to find you If you want to be found online, you need to tell people where you are! Share your profile name (for example, mine is @TrudyRitsema) with people whenever you

24

get the chance, so they can easily find you. Add it to your business cards, compliments slips, and all of your marketing material. Put up a sign in any venue you use saying ‘Follow me on social media’, and then add the social-media platforms you use. Add social-media icons or even the newsfeed from your social media on your website. Finally, pop it on the end of your emails too.

#SWIBTRIBE | ISSUE 1

Be great at one rather than okay at many It is better to be great at one social-media platform than just mediocre at all of them, plus it will save you time! Choose a platform that you are comfortable using. Then, and most importantly, choose one that your target audience is using. If you are not sure what they use, remember each social-media platform has its own ‘insights’, which will tell you what type of demographic are looking at your posts. Another simple strategy is to ask your customers what platform(s) they are using. So, check your insights, ask your customers where they hang out, find a platform you love, and then choose wisely!

“What would get my followers chatting if we were all in a room together?”

Post for comments, comments and more comments Unfortunately, when you post something it will not be seen by all of your followers. However, if your post gets comments, the social-media platform will think it’s worth showing to more people. So, rather than posting something just because you feel like it, try to post something that will encourage your followers to comment. Ask them a question, solve a problem for them, or write about something topical. Think: what would get my followers chatting if we were all in a room together? Then create a post about it!

“Choose a platform that you are comfortable using. Then, and most importantly, choose one that your target audience is using”

The Ageless Generation Elaine Miller brings creativity and design to how you think and feel about your image, with beautifully tailored British fashion

A

s an award-winning fashion designer and creative, I have had nearly 40 years’ experience advising and dressing a great number of women, helping them to look and feel their best and, importantly, present the image of their choosing to the world. I specialise in tailoring, and aim to design and create exclusive pieces for my clients. Every woman is unique, and so it stands to reason that the advice I give, her clothing choices and how she wants to dress, will be as individual as she is. Something that unites these wonderful women is that they all share a desire for their age to not be identified by a number. We can now start a business in our 50s or take up marathon running in our 60s, and we are the first generation to have so much more choice in how we want to live our lives. The Ageless Generation (www.agelessgen.co.uk) has developed over many years, bringing my knowledge of design, colour and image to a wider audience. As women of the Ageless Generation, especially in business, we have experienced a lot. There have been triumphs and setbacks, but we now know our minds, and we are stronger, more assured versions of our younger selves. My vision for the Ageless Generation is to empower women to own who they are now. Your image and your identity is your brand; it communicates so much, before you have had the chance to speak. With over 80% of your impact in any situation being visual, I aim to show you how to reflect your brand by enhancing this ageless, timeless and unique identity we have become. What you have to say is important, if not vital to your business, so help yourself by ensuring that your image reflects your message.

We all probably have too much stuff, clothes included, so my intention is to encourage you to think differently about what you already have, rather than accumulate more. Think subtle tweaks rather than a total transformation, unless this is what you want, of course. You have developed your sense of style over many years, and my aim is to show you how to polish it for the Ageless Generation, rather than create an image that will be almost impossible to maintain. Would you benefit from some friendly, impartial and certainly non-prescriptive advice? I offer individual coaching sessions or group workshops. All are collaborative and interactive, and done in a way that enables you to think about what you want to achieve. This is all about you!

In business, it’s all about the message Award-winning speaker and coach Bev Hepting, aka The Message Maestro, is showing women in business how to create and deliver their perfect business message

About Bev

W

hen you decide to go into business, there is always a ‘why’ in terms of the decision you made to go into business. Sometimes the reason is because you wanted to escape the pressures of corporate organisations; sometimes it’s because you want to work around the kids; and sometimes it’s because you simply wanted to. But there is always a why. Understanding the why sets you apart from other business owners; it gives them the ‘why should I work with you’ answer they need. We all want to work with people with whom we feel safe, and if your why aligns with their why, they are more likely to work with you. Yet so many times I talk to women and they don’t understand the why. They talk a lot about their prior career, their previous relationships, their past illnesses and so on, and compartmentalise those aspects of their lives. Life is not like that. All of our experiences and knowledge make up one big road that we travel down. Understanding what you really do and how to communicate that to people is like having your cake and putting a great big shiny cherry on the top. It unites everything into a single story that demonstrates to people that you can solve their problem. And ultimately, we only buy solutions to problems. The Active Speakers club offers you the opportunity to put a signature speech together, understand who you are talking to, and find out where to find those people.

“In short, Bev was amazing.

Honest, understanding and straight to the point! Bev managed to pull out of me what I have been trying to do for years. Brilliant service and I would recommend her expertise to anyone thinking of wanting to speak and be heard. Gail Reynolds The 6 Million Pound Avon Lady

For the speaker wanting to take their speaking to the next level, there is the opportunity to be part of the Speakers Directory and get access to global speaking opportunities (free and paid-for). If you want to know more about Bev Hepting, The Message Maestro, or the Active Speakers club, contact Bev on 07942 908166 or email bev@bevhepting.com. Successfully scale up your business Rosie Stevens, director of Mployable, offers expert advice on successfully scaling up your business and hiring for growth

R

ecruitment today isn’t about picking candidates – it’s about candidates picking you. According to 2019 research conducted by MRINetwork, the current recruitment marketplace is 90% candidate driven. Why? The primary reason for job openings is newly created positions, rather than organic movement. Currently, 50% of all job openings are newly created positions, and only 26% of job openings are due to resignations. Add to that, LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com) research shows that 75% of candidates will research a company's online presence and employer brand before making the decision to apply for the job in question. So how can you successfully scale up your business to ensure you have the right people in the right place at the right time? There are so many creative ways you can engage with the best talent in your industry, but these three things undoubtedly work:

30

1.

An engaging and authentic employer brand, to organically build talent pipelines.

2.

Forecasting your recruitment to stay one step ahead of your growing business’s needs.

3.

Treating your candidates like customers.

Recruitment is often treated as an afterthought, but if you are growing a business, it needs to be a priority. To engage with the top talent today, it isn’t about hoping that someone will find your advert and apply; it’s about sticking your head above the parapet and becoming an employer of choice. Mployable (www.Mployable.co.uk) offers employers a different solution to the traditional recruitment agency or DIY routes. It partners with businesses to identify their growth and hiring needs, enabling them to scale

#SWIBTRIBE | ISSUE 1

“It’s about sticking your head above the parapet and becoming an employer of choice” successfully and sustainably in line with their wider business goals. The team at Mployable then works with the individual businesses to execute the processes and strategies that attract top talent. Ultimately, Mployable is an outsourced ‘in house’ recruitment team. It could be that the right option for your business is outsourcing or temporary workers. This can provide a whole host of advantages, not to mention offer the sort of flexibility your business might need. So if you are not ready to sign up for a payroll, here are some practical tips for a scale-up plan that supports the growth of your business:

OUTSOURCE

TEMPORARY STAFF

SYSTEMS, PROCESSES AND AUTOMATION

If there is an area of your business that requires in-house support on a regular basis, and it’s a skilled role, pull in a virtual worker.

If the role is low-skill or entry-level work, consider using a reputable recruitment agency to provide temporary or fixed-term cover.

What can you automate? What technology can you use to streamline and save you time to focus on the important stuff?

As with everything in business, it’s all about what is right for you, and timing of course. Taking on a member of staff is a big commitment, but it might be the most cost-effective and time-effective way of scaling. Assess the options carefully, crunch the numbers, and look at the long-term and short-term implications of each solution. What’s the right solution to help you grow your business?

About Rosie Rosie Stevens is the director of Mployable, a consultancy business that works with growing businesses to bring their recruitment in-house through planning, strategy and execution. © Jason Holt Rosie mastered her recruitment expertise through a mix of agency, executive search and inhouse HR and recruitment roles in a varied career.

Alexia Browning Creative Business Award

A

lexia Browning of Made By Me Craft Parties won the Creative Business Award, sponsored by HJ Accounts Management. Lexy provides personalised craft parties for children, teens and adults for any occasion, such as birthday parties, wedding entertainment for children, hen parties, corporate events and team building. She is based in West Moors, Dorset, but covers the entire south coast. “It felt amazing to be nominated for the Creative Business Award,” Lexy tells us. “When the email arrived, I was so thrilled that someone had noticed me and my business!” We ask whether winning the award has made a difference, and she says that: “Winning the award has given me a massive confidence boost. I’ve been working away on Made By Me Craft Parties for nearly five years, and to have my work recognised and commended really made © Joanne Dewberry my year.”

Angela Piromalli Mentor Award

A

ngela Piromalli founded RISE. in Westbourne, Bournemouth, more than ten years ago – a recruitment agency that works across the south coast, UK and Europe specialising in IT, creative and commercial work. Nominated for a SWIB Award in ©Felix Cohen the Mentor Award category meant a lot to Angela: “I felt honoured, especially as it is a new awards ceremony. It feels great to know that other people in your close community think about you in such a positive way and believe in you,” she tells us. “Personally, winning this was a surprise, and I was delighted to receive the Mentor Award. It’s really given me a boost of confidence, and I had a lot of people congratulating me and getting in touch. Thank you for letting me be part of this exciting journey!”

Kate Worden New Business Award

Zoe Wathen Teaching Award

Z

oe Wathen has been a teacher at Parkstone Grammar School in Poole, Dorset, since 2006, and was nominated in the Teaching Award category of the SWIB Awards. It was especially poignant for Zoe, as she explains: “To receive the email from Gill to say that I had been nominated was a real boost for ©Felix Cohen me. At the time, I was recovering from a minor surgery, so it was perfect timing to a) give my self-esteem a lift, and b) actually make me focus my thoughts on all those things I do right and the parts of my job that I execute well, instead of lingering around the elements of the work I undertake that have not been as successful as I would have hoped.” Zoe feels the whole SWIB Awards experience was positive from start to finish. Though unnerving to begin with, she found the push for self-reflection around her professional practice – and the subsequent need to translate that into something vaguely comprehensible on paper – both liberating and fulfilling, and says she left the awards ceremony with “a spring in my step!” Zoe valued meeting like-minded women who have followed their instinct, supported one another and created a living from something that was once just a seed of an idea. She says: “Gill has clearly worked thoughtfully and tirelessly towards creating this platform in which to recognise women in business, and has in turn built up her own respected network of support. What a superb event! Thank you, Gill.”

K

ate Worden set up IzzyBee, a gifting service, in Wellington, Somerset, nearly three years ago. The team creates care packages using beautiful and delicious artisan products from multiple small businesses around the UK. From new-mum to get-well-soon packages, or packages made just ©Felix Cohen because you’re thinking of someone going through a hard time, there is a gift for everyone. Kate admits that she was “gobsmacked” when she found out she had been nominated for a SWIB award in the New Business Award category last year. She continues: “I was also thrilled that my small business idea had been picked up and thought of as worthy to be considered side by side with other amazing businesses. It was a marvellous boost to me personally,” Kate says. “The award doesn’t change the day-to-day running of the business, but when packing orders in the wee hours of the morning, or dealing with the inevitable problems that crop up running a small business, seeing the award gives me a boost and motivation to keep going! When confidence is waning, the award gives me a figurative pat on the back and encouragement to believe in myself.” Kate also says that “having the backing and approval of a sponsor such as Mercedes Benz gave me extra confidence in my company and ideas.”
