Welcome Welcome to the third issue of the Successful Women in Business magazine, where we celebrate and showcase the work and businesses of successful women across Devon, Dorset and Somerset
A
key event in the Successful Women in Business calendar is our annual conference, held every year in March to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) and to launch our Awards. You may even be reading this at our 2020 conference, as this edition is published in time to share at the conference and highlights the achievements of some of the amazing women (and men) in our local communities. This year’s IWD campaign is #EachforEqual, promoting that an equal world is an enabled world where we can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements. Who better to focus on the promotion of a genderequal world than Lynne Franks OBE, our keynote speaker, as she celebrates the 20th anniversary of the SEED Network. Read more on page 8. One of the best ways to showcase success is by being featured on our cover, and this edition’s cover girl is Awards sponsor Dawn of D52ltd: Business Toolkit™. Read more about Dawn’s passion for business growth on page 12. Since our Christmas edition was published, we have started 2020 focused on ensuring our members receive as much support as possible through business growth opportunities, and the support of everyone in the network. To make sure that each group has active support embedded in their community, I am thrilled to welcome three more Group Leaders, who join Sarah Mills, leader of the Weymouth group, in taking over their groups as part of their own businesses. Meet Julie, Julia and Nicholla from Bournemouth, Taunton and Exeter on page 30. I’m often reminded at network events how inspirational it can be to get to know more
about other women in business, highlighting the importance of having one-to-ones with your fellow members and visitors. I’ve learned some astonishing insights about women I have ‘known’ for years, but somehow not made the time to find out more about them as people; it certainly pays to be nosy! With this in mind, we will continue to bring you regular interviews with successful women from around the South West in the magazine. In this edition, we chat to Awards sponsors Hannah Jeffrey, Karen Bailey and Ros Nelmes. As our conference marks the launch of the Successful Women in Business Awards, you will find all the details about each award and its sponsor from page 36 onwards. The awards are open for entries from 5th March – 17th April 2020. Don’t forget, as much as our lovely magazine is great to hold and read in hard copy, it’s also available online, without those annoying ‘pop-up’ adverts. So do head over to the Issuu platform and search for the ‘Successful Women in Business Magazine’ to read. Enjoy!

An interview with Lynne Franks OBE Having positioned the UK as a world fashion leader by initiating London Fashion Week and the British Fashion Awards, highly successful PR expert Lynne Franks OBE became a champion of women’s empowerment, sustainable business practices and social justice issues. Gill Donnell chats to Lynne about the 20th anniversary of the SEED Network and her plans for the future Gill: Lynne, the SEED Network has now reached its 20th anniversary. What are your plans to mark this event? Lynne: We have a whole series of live events going
on across the country, launching on 11th March at Covent Garden’s hClub, when I am being interviewed by BBC journalist Brenda Emmanus. I am also planning workshops and panel talks with John Lewis and the Daily Telegraph across the country, and most excitingly of all I am putting on SEED Live! This is a major empowerment and wellbeing festival for women entrepreneurs at Wincanton Racecourse. There will also be a complete reset of the SEED Network, online forums, opportunities for collaboration, workshops and skills exchange, and the launch of my online Power of 7 programmes. There are lots of exciting new projects pollinating in the SEED Garden and SEED 20.20 is just the beginning.
“There are lots of exciting projects pollinating in the SEED Garden and SEED 20.20 is just the beginning”

Gill: You have now settled in Somerset. Can you tell us about the creation of the SEED Hub? Lynne: The SEED Hub in Wincanton came about
almost instinctively when I moved there about three years ago. I bought two beautiful old buildings in the middle of town and have converted one, previously an old pub, into a beautiful wellbeing hub, with bedrooms, a healthy vegan café, treatment rooms and a welcoming large workshop studio. We have been holding all kinds of events, such as live music, talks, workshops and healing sessions, with guests coming from all over the country

to be nurtured and inspired. It is the bricks and mortar to the SEED dream and I love it. I live next door, with a lovely shared garden that we use for summer events, and the SEED Store with our eclectic mix of sustainable natural beauty, fashion and lifestyle produces at the front.
Gill: What are your plans for the next five years? Lynne: I wish I knew. As the original SEEDSower
archetype from my Power of 7 programme, I am full of ideas that are focused on women collaborating and leading society from the grassroots to create a whole new world from communities outwards, based on love and not fear. We women have a lot to do together and I
am staying open to how this next big push will evolve. Now 71, it is important for me to stay healthy with all my energy full pelt for as long as I can – and I am so excited with all that is going on. I have seven grandchildren and want the world to be a safe and healthy place for them, and all children, to grow up in.

“As women, we know that the best and most efficient way to get things done is to work together” Lynne’s Vision and Values Statement
My vision is for a world based on cooperation between male and female. As women, we know that the best and most efficient way to get things done is to work together, and that means living and working with men in harmonious coexistence, valuing the perspectives and strengths of both sexes and creating a higher quality of life for all. It must also be a world of cooperation between business and community, human beings and the planet, national governments and non-governmental organisations, young and old, spirituality and science, and our inner and outer selves. The opportunity to create this world does exist now. It is possible to create a society where we can bring people together and heal our families, our communities and our world. To do so would take a new breed of leaders, ones who aren’t tied to the old way of doing things. Rather than money or power, these leaders must have spiritual values to guide them. And since spiritual values are at our core, it is vitally important for women to step up and take the lead in this transformation of society. A cooperative society is an organic, evolutionary step away from the world we presently live in. When the power of national governments diminish, that power will naturally transfer into specific small and large networks that transcend national boundaries and link with one another. Consequently, a new economic order could be created that truly rewards effort, including the caring of others. Distribution of land and natural resources would be fairly shared among the people who live on it, and the need to conquer and repress others in the name of power would not be a consideration. Lynne Franks OBE, The GROW Handbook, 2004

Introducing the D52 Business Toolkit™ Our cover girl, Dawn, tells us about the many tools in her Business Toolkit
I
founded the D52ltd Business Toolkit™ seven years ago, having spent 35 years in a variety of businesses employed in operational management, general management or business development roles. I saw the need for business owners to have an empathetic ear, combined with business know-how, and so created that safe space for them to talk confidentially about barriers to growth and vision for business, while offering one-toone support together with strategic business advice and guidance.
“I saw the need for business owners to have an empathetic ear, combined with business know-how” The D52ltd Business Toolkit™ was then developed as a set of solutions focused on overcoming those perceived barriers to growth and development. In 2018, I won national acclaim as the UK’s Business Advisor of the Year, the next year winning Dorset Business Consultancy of the Year. It is thrilling when business owners decide to commit to attending a masterclass, or develop a business plan or

growth strategy. It really is a privilege to share the burden with those experiencing coercion, financial worries, leadership concerns, gaps in business acumen, or even the development of a new idea. The Business Toolkit’s internal motto is ‘You Are Not Alone’ and this is the message we want to disseminate to our potential clients.

On being an SWIB member I have been a member of the Successful Women in Business network for four years, starting at the original group in Dorchester, when there were just 10 of us at the first meeting. Having seen the explosion of the #swibtribe throughout the South West, I can testify to how great it is to be part of a membership network, where the emphasis is on support and collaboration.
My online courses, workshops and free tasters have been well received by SWIB members and I have appreciated the personal development sessions, camaraderie, as well as referrals from other members in areas where I specialise. In fact, I have met some of my closest friends through networking within SWIB. Having previously been lead judge for the SWIB Awards, I am now the sponsor of the High Business Growth category and am excited for what 2020 has in store both for myself and for the #swibtribe as a whole. Now for the next five years! My plans are to develop my online masterclasses to make the generics of running a business available to everyone regardless of business size, longevity or location. I so am excited that price, location or business acumen will not preclude anyone from accessing my support. As much as I love running workshops and one-to-one work in the areas of troubleshooting or diagnostic support, I know that by delivering masterclasses I can attend more networking events and spend time supporting more of my soul clients.

“Delight comes from plants and springs and gardens and gentle winds and flowers and the song of birds” Libanios, 314 – c.393 AD
In search of paradise Melanie Horsey, of John Horsey Horticulture, brings you the history of gardens as a topic of wonder in our human story The word ‘paradise’ comes from the old Persian ‘pairidaeza’ meaning an enclosure, and was used to describe the hunting park of the Persian king. The word was then used in Old Testament Hebrew as ‘pardes’, meaning simply a garden or park, and into Greek as ‘paradeisos’. But there’s no doubt the first gardens were discovered, not made. Maybe a natural clearing in a forest, a valley opening up, or an island in a lake surrounded by trees – full of flowers, fragrant and bearing fruit. Garden history and garden art have always been closely linked as a cultural reflection of a period or area. The gardens of the East reflected Zen Buddhism and Taoism, while the Islamic gardens were constructed in earthly praise of the Mohammedan paradise.

In the Middle Ages, the ecclesiastical and knightly divisions of society were shown in the ordered and practical cloister gardens and the flowery, fantasy gardens of the poets. During the Renaissance, gardens showed the reawakened Classical scholarship, as well as the bawdy enjoyment of life, while the gardens of Versailles were the symbol of the supreme power of The Sun King. The garden designer of Versailles, Le Nôtre, thought ‘flowers were for nursemaids’, so maybe would have appreciated Zen Buddhism where the Japanese pretty much stopped growing flowers in their gardens. Garden history is a fascinating subject – once you start looking into it, there is no end in sight. Even the choice of
plants reflect the spirit of an age, and garden designers and philosophers from Mollet, Brown, Jekyll and many others, bring to life the gardens of the past. Garden history continues with old plans and neglected plants being rediscovered. New styles, new attitudes and new interests serve to increase garden themes. Montacute currently has a 10-year project to reinstate the gardens as close to the Elizabethan original as can be done. The University of Dusseldorf has a botanic garden incorporating modern and Renaissance ideas serving both new and old. Not bad for a discipline dating back 3,000 years with its origins in Greek myth!

top tips to improve your professional profile
Bring a selection of different outfits, different colours, light and dark; afterwards you can see the ones that worked best for you on the day.
Sasfi Hope-Ross shares her advice for creating a professional profile that stands out from the crowd I have been a professional photographer for many years working in many different areas, but one of my favourite areas of photography to work in is portraiture. I love working with people, helping them to relax and getting that perfect image. Adding a proper image to your profile will increase your level of professionalism and improve your marketability. Virtually no one likes getting their photograph taken, but the difference when you have it done professionally, in a relaxed and fun manner, is incredible. Working closely with my clients, I ensure you get the best professional image possible. The three top tips I always give beforehand are:

Wear clothes that you are sure suit you and that you like yourself in. Try to keep your diary free for an hour before your shoot, so you don’t arrive late and stressed.

Sustainability award sponsor Karen Bailey of Willow Tree Life tells us about her journey to this point in her life and business, and how she can help you find peace and clarity
I
am a single mother with four gorgeous children, aged 15-25, and a beautiful granddaughter aged 5. I’ve had the pleasure of bringing up these wonderful human beings on my own for the last 13 years. At times it’s not been easy – such as being told you’re not good enough and getting beaten up on a daily basis because your autistic son doesn’t know how to control his emotions! I had to leave my job, which I loved, but never gave up on my dreams. I built my own business as a beauty and holistic therapist, and later qualified as a Reiki Master. This changed my life for the better, helping me let go of the guilt and the anger; I taught myself to love me again, for who I truly am inside. Now I’m known as ‘Willow Tree Life’, which is all about YOU and how you can live the life you truly desire by
22
being your true authentic self. This is achieved through love, gratitude and letting go of what no longer serves you – realising the greatness that’s been inside you since you were created. Everything we feel and do relates to our wellbeing and directly affects our actions and emotions. I can help people reduce stress, pain and anxiety; help increase your confidence, self-esteem and smile; achieve your full potential; and live life with passion and purpose. My aim is to make you feel uplifted, empowered and validated, and realise on a daily basis that you are enough. Sometimes we put too much pressure on ourselves trying to be like the person next to us, always comparing ourselves to others, when we should be focusing on the only one that matters. Who do you think that is?

Interview with Hannah Jeffrey Gill: First, tell us about you and your business.
Gill: How have they made a difference to you and your business?
Hannah: I set up HJ Accounts Management just over four years ago, to offer a friendly, approachable accounting solution for small business owners. My husband, Mike, has since joined the business, and together we work with our clients to help them keep on top of their business finances.
Hannah: Sponsoring the SWIB Awards for the last
three years has given us the opportunity to find out more about local businesses. Reading the applications has given us insight into how hard business owners work to build their businesses, and how success cannot always be measured in pounds and pence.
Gill: You are now sponsoring the Awards for the third year; why do these Awards mean so much to you? Hannah: The SWIB Awards are a fantastic celebration of women’s achievements in business. It’s not often that we have the time to take stock of how far we have come, or how much we have achieved. Even the process of filling in the application for a SWIB Award is a way of doing so.
26
#SWIBTRIBE | ISSUE 3
Gill: What is your vision for your business in the next five years? Hannah: We plan to continue to grow our business,
while maintaining our approachable, family-run business ethos. We really enjoy working with small business owners and being part of their journey, and look forward to continuing to collaborate with other SWIB members to offer clients additional benefits.
Gill: Tell us three things you think our readers should consider when setting up a new business. Hannah: Finding a business mentor or support person you can bounce ideas around with and seek guidance from is really important when starting a new business. Preferably not a family member, but someone who is able to give honest, impartial advice. Also, having a solid, well-researched business plan to work from is a good starting point. Having measurable goals and budgets will keep you on track and allow you to identify which areas are working well. Photo ŠSasfi Hope-Ross
Finally, I think finding your ‘tribe’ of like-minded, small business owners for support is essential. Running your own business can be lonely, but having a safe environment to be able to talk through issues you are facing (and also celebrate your successes!) is invaluable.

An interview with Alison Edgar Gill Donnell talks to Alison Edgar aka ‘The Entrepreneur’s Godmother’
“Blending sales and psychology, I share my methodology developed over 25 years as an awardwinning salesperson and helping some of the UK’s most promising entrepreneurs develop their businesses” Alison Edgar
Gill: What made you want to start your own business working with entrepreneurs?
About Alison Edgar
Alison: To be honest, I didn’t. I always thought I would have been an employee. It was only when the company I worked for and I had different opinions on how things should be done, I looked for a new path in my life. I had always been a top sales performer in Blue Chip organisations, and I knew from my time working with small businesses and start-ups that selling was their downfall. So after a phone call with my friend Loraine, I

decided I was going to do something to help them, and my company was born.
Gill: Do you think women always understand their worth in business? Alison: Some do and some don’t. When I reflect on my journey, it was riddled with imposter syndrome and selfdoubt. It was only when I complained to my husband that he was not supporting me and his response was that I was only playing at it, I realised that I was! That gave me the shockwave I needed to take things seriously, and since then I’ve known my value and can price accordingly.
Gill: Based on your experience, what’s the one thing entrepreneurs could do differently to create a better chance of success? Alison: Learn to sell! Of course I’m biased, but sooooo many entrepreneurs get it wrong! They don’t know sales processes and they don’t make money in their business. Additionally, it’s all about having a strong plan, knowing how to price goods and very importantly knowing your numbers. You only have to watch Dragon’s Den to see how many people fall down at that hurdle.

Excellence, not perfection What is about women that makes it so difficult for us to ask for help? Gill Donnell gives her opinion
S
ometimes, I think hearing a woman asking for help is about as uncommon as hearing a man ask for directions! No one is going to reward us at the Pearly Gates because we did one more chore, cooked one more meal or finished one more load of washing. I say, delegate as much as you can and don’t get into the no-win position of playing the martyr. Please, stop trying to be the perfect mother, wife, daughter or lover – trust me, excellence is far
“No one is going to reward us at the Pearly Gates because we did one more chore, cooked one more meal or finished one more load of washing” easier to achieve than perfection. I frequently hear women bemoaning the amount of time it takes to do all those essential chores after their full day working, yet many seem genuinely astonished when I suggest they might invest some of that hardearned cash in a cleaner, gardener or ironing fairy. The same happens in the world of business, where many female solopreneurs wait until they are almost at breaking point before they accept that help from a virtual assistant, bookkeeper or social media assistant might actually free them up to do what they’re really, really good at. But at home, in particular, there seems to be all manner of reasons why these ‘pink’ jobs can’t be franchised out. The most common, often unspoken, reason is that it won’t be done as well as they would do it themselves. (This applies in business too.) That may well be true, but is the rest of the family really going to be aghast if the shower screen has a few smudges? Will they even notice
32
if the vacuum cleaner isn’t pushed around as regularly? Interestingly, in my experience, the belief of many women that they must personally fulfill their responsibilities in terms of these so-called ‘female’ household chores doesn’t necessarily extend to their busy male partners. Their responsibilities might typically extend to mending cars, plumbing, decorating, cutting grass and hedges. Certainly in our house, and in many others, a number of the ‘boy’ jobs are contracted out to others with no guilt at all. Of course, if you do invest in help and give up on that perfectionist gene, don’t fall into the trap of cleaning up before the cleaner comes! So why do some of us set ourselves standards that Mother Theresa would struggle to reach? Our upbringing can have a great impact on in-built personal expectations and unrealistic standard setting, often passed from generation to generation. Although some inherited traits will be of great benefit to us in our professional lives, such as ‘strong work ethic’ or an ‘ability to work well under pressure’. As with anything, it’s the extremes that can lead to an unhealthy outcome, such as
“Many female solopreneurs wait until they are almost at breaking point before they accept that help from a virtual assistant, bookkeeper or social media assistant might actually free them up to do what they’re really, really good at”

feeling that it’s necessary to work a 60-70-hour week to be successful. There are many things we can do to help achieve a healthy balanced outlook and to develop, learn and succeed without putting ourselves under too much pressure. Many of these are outlined in my book Celebr8 Success, which this article is extracted from, but my favourite tip is probably to learn to ‘fail brilliantly’. There is no shame in failure, if we take the opportunity to learn and embrace the process. So embrace excellence, don’t push yourselves to achieve excessively high standards, whether set by yourself or others around you. To quote Winston Churchill: “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”
“Why do some of us set ourselves standards that Mother Theresa would struggle to reach?”
Celebr8 Success – How to be a Successful Working Mum without the Guilt was written by Gill Donnell MBE and can be found on Amazon in Kindle or paperback format.
About Gill Donnell MBE Gill is an experienced leader, motivational speaker and personal development coach, who has spent much of her working life promoting the role of women in the workplace and supporting individuals to achieve their full potential. Having worked in a variety of different sectors, Gill is able to draw on an extensive knowledge base to promote personal and organisational learning and development. www.swibtribe.com

chool in a Bag will later this year become the SWIB charity, so we decided to find out more about its founder and CEO Luke Simon. Following a six-and-half-year career designing gardens around the world, Luke took a year out in 2004 visiting 10 countries and secured a position as the Athletic Director in an international school in northern Thailand. During the Christmas break on the Thai island of Koh Phi Phi, Luke was caught up in the Indian Ocean Tsunami, where his brother Piers was tragically killed. The Piers Simon Appeal (PSA) was officially launched at Piers’ memorial service to help disaster victims around the world and, to date, victims in 13 countries have been financially supported by the PSA, including funding 131 Shelterboxes. In 2009, the PSA created School in a Bag (SIAB), an initiative that distributes rucksacks filled with stationery, learning resources and eating utensils to disadvantaged
34
children around the world, giving them an opportunity to a better education, which could be their lifeline to a future free from hardship and poverty. The cost to sponsor a numbered and traceable SchoolBag is £20 and, to date, SIAB have delivered over 117,767 SchoolBags to children in 45 countries. In late 2019, School in a Bag became a standalone charity. In early 2020, School in a Bag Trading Ltd was registered to run the numerous fundraising events it carries out, including Home Farm Fest, the charity’s annual three-day music festival, which since 2006 has raised £475,700.

SWIB Awards 2020 The business world is full of hugely talented and successful women who not only run businesses, or work in demanding roles, but they often also juggle caring responsibilities at the same time
W
e understand the positive impact on women of recognising and celebrating their successes, so what better than to create awards to demonstrate this to the wider community. The Successful Women in Business Awards were born in 2018!
As we celebrate the Awards’ third birthday in 2020, we have 11 individual category awards launching at our Annual Conference on 5th March 2020. A huge thank you to our sponsors, many of whom are sponsoring for the second and third time. As third-time sponsor Hannah Jeffrey of HJ Accounts Management says in her interview on page 26: “Sponsoring the SWIB awards for the last three years has given us the opportunity to find out more about local businesses. Reading the applications has given us insight into how hard business owners work to build their businesses, and how success cannot always be measured in pounds and pence.” So, have a look at the criteria for each award and decide which one (or two) you are going to apply for. It is very straightforward: visit the awards website www.swibawards.com and complete the online form now!
What are you waiting for?
