Welcome Welcome to the fourth issue of the Successful Women In Business magazine, celebrating and showcasing the work and businesses of successful women across the south west and highlighting the amazing 2020 Successful Women Awards’ sponsors and category finalists.

A

key part of the Successful Women events calendar is the launch of our annual Awards, which takes place at our yearly Conference to celebrate International Women’s Day. Thankfully we were able to hold this year’s Conference back in March, two weeks before the first lockdown. What a wonderful event it was – you can see some of the photos on pages 16 and 17. As normal, our 2020 Awards were launched on Conference day and we made the decision to continue with the award’s judging and finalist selection while in lockdown. Our finalists have been waiting a long time for the awards ceremony and I’m excited that we’ll be holding this online in December. We would be unable to hold the Awards without the generous support of our sponsors. You can read about the remaining sponsors, not already featured in previous magazines, in the #swibawards sponsors section, starting on Page 12. It’s also great to be able to look back on our 2019 Awards winners – have a look at some of the previous winners from page 32. Each year our network supports a great charity and we’re thrilled to be continuing our support for School in a Bag (SIAB), who send school bags filled with educational resources to poor, orphaned, vulnerable, disadvantaged and disaster-affected children. At our Conference, we raised £200, which allowed us to buy 10 bags for children in the Congo. All bags bought through SIAB can be tracked, and we’ve shared the images of the 10 children we have supported across our social media accounts.

Find out how the charity is managing to support children in the pandemic on page 11. I’d like to say a personal thank you to members who supported our Christmas shopping event, as well as those members and finalists who purchased VIP tickets allowing us to donate even more much-needed funds to School in a Bag. See who purchased our VIP tickets on page 30. We’re making some changes to membership in 2021, with the launch of our Successful Women Members’ Club, alongside our already successful women’s business network – read all about the new club on page 18. I’m writing this while we’re still in the middle of the November lockdown, and I can’t finish without mentioning the #swibtribe members who form the heart of our network. There’s no doubt that this pandemic has disproportionately impacted on women, both here and across the world, and our celebrations honour those women, many of whom have homeschooled children, as well as looking after others in their families and communities and against all odds are still successfully running their businesses. You are our heroes!

Grow your inner strength Cover star Tracy Kimberg is an experienced counselling hypnotherapist and resilient mind coach, who helps make a difference to those who are in scary, lonely spaces of worthlessness

T

racy wants to inspire those around her, to show that even a therapist has to pay attention to their mental health and constantly train a resilient mind.

Tracy has experienced the pressures of wanting to perform perfectly in all aspects of her life. Tracy had to support her daughters financially after her divorce, so she pursued her dream of becoming a therapist. After qualifying, Tracy joined SWIB, where she found other strong women with similar stories to tell. It’s humbling to see that, no matter what your past is, it doesn’t define the end of your story. Never measure your value on how other people treat you and listen to alarm bells when they ring. If anybody feels like they’re living a lie, then you probably are, and you’re the only one who can change that.

Asking for help is the bravest, most kind thing you can do for yourself.

“My happiness comes from within now, and that makes me value the teachers from my past” Many of the tools and techniques that Tracy teaches her clients are ones she has used herself. The people who walk into the office are so broken, but when they leave, they aren’t anymore. She sees client’s lives transforming in front of her. The greatest reward for Tracy was becoming a finalist for two of our awards. Tracy feels empowered by her strength and looking back at her life, she says: “I’m an amazing woman. My happiness comes from within now, and that makes me value the teachers from my past.”

“It’s humbling to see that, no matter what your past is, it doesn’t define the end of your story”

Tracy’s top tips •

If you’re struggling with imposter syndrome, reach out and talk to someone. Let go of your inner critic and learn to be kinder to yourself.

If you’re reflecting on your past, focus on the successes. Don’t get caught up in the failures, as they are lessons.

If you have the pressures of juggling 150 things at once, the first thing to do is to drop the guilt. It’s impossible to juggle everything. Instead, make a list and prioritise your tasks, then do them accordingly.

Don’t forget it’s ok to say no; before you reach burnout, self-care is a priority. When you have taken care of yourself, the rest will become far more manageable.

Do you suffer with self-doubt? Or are you feeling down? Make notes about your life, in your head, or on paper each day. When you’re

in a good place, keep a reference of what you were thinking about, listening to, reading or who you were seeing. Then when you go back into that dark place, refer back to that reference so you know exactly what to do to feel better again. If something makes you happy, do more of that.

School in a Bag update Greetings from School in a Bag – we’re happy to report that we’re surviving!

T

o our good fortune, we have excellent reserves, but have undergone a few changes due to the global coronavirus pandemic. Sadly, the team of four has halved and, in light of lockdowns, we have created more digital and virtual platforms to embrace the new way of living, working and, of course fundraising. Much of this is centred around a new website, which includes a shop (now Christmas themed!) and we’re hopeful for a busy few months where people fund SchoolBags for Christmas. During the first lockdown, our 3 Peaks and Everest Staircase Challenges raised funds to support our international partners’ homeschooling efforts and now

we are delighted to be funding SchoolBag projects again with recent distributions in Tanzania, Nepal and Guinea Bissau (see picture). Congratulations to all of the finalists in this year’s awards, and thank you to the members of the #swibtribe for your wonderful, continued support.

Market your business effectively Louise founded Perceptions Marketing Solutions having spent 20 years in senior marketing roles across Europe handling PR and communications for the likes of Sun Life, Nestlé and IBM. Her experience is in both internal and external communications. Having run her own successful businesses, she knows what works and what doesn’t work. Here she shares her top tips

“Your marketing plan will always be in need of revision and constant updating”

Why is marketing important? Marketing is an enabler. However, the purpose of marketing is not only to facilitate sales, or to sell at all for that matter. It is a critical business function and essential if you’re to meet your business goals and objectives.

Define your identity Your brand is more than just your logo and speaks volumes about your company, therefore you should take your time to research the individual elements and manage its use. Each brand is unique, due to its identity, which stems from your company’s core values. Before designing your logo, you should define your value proposition – what sets you apart from your competitors and what value do you bring to your customers? This, in turn, will inform your core brand message.

“Your brand is more than just your logo and speaks volumes about your company” 12

#SWIBTRIBE | ISSUE 4

Know your audience Take time to identify and study your audience:

Who do you want to speak to?

Where are they?

What do you want to say to them?

When is the best time to speak to them?

Why should they do what you want?

“Take time to identify and study your audience”

Write a plan Before deciding on writing your plan you need to understand why you’re doing this. What are your goals, your business objectives? Your marketing plan will always be in need of revision and constant updating in order to reflect your current business objectives and, as such, is an ongoing business activity. Having your plan up to date can keep you focused on where you are heading and ensure you are ready when you need it again.

How can Perceptions Marketing Solutions help you?

Perceptions Marketing Solutions is sponsoring our Business Mother Award. Louise says: “I’m very proud to be sponsoring the SWIB Business Mother Award for the second year running – it’s one that is close to my heart with my experience of running my own business alongside what is the most important role, that of being a mum. It’s something I have been doing for nearly 30 years and it’s something I am very proud of.”

Who runs the world? Girls! Leading Dorset and Somerset law firm Humphries Kirk LLP demonstrates why women play such an important role in shaping their firm

A

ccording to official figures, only 1 in 5 businesses in the UK is currently run by a woman. Despite this, we should all be encouraged by the rapidly growing number of women who are powering through traditional barriers to success, to now run their own companies or excel in directorial roles.

Many talented women are now fulfilling their potential due to the step-change taking place in leading boardrooms and businesses, along with the various awards, dedicated networking events and support groups for women.

New Year, New Beginnings Like so many businesses this year, the Successful Women in Business Network has had to adapt to our changing times…

O

ur live events have always thrived on the energy created by the wonderful women in the room, showcased particularly well at our annual Conference this March. Differing circumstances, for both us and our members, bring different opportunities. As a women’s business network, we’re now looking to make the most of the strengths of our Tribe leaders. In the last edition of our magazine, we featured our four Group Leaders, then running our Somerset, Devon, Weymouth and Bournemouth groups, while I ran Dorchester and SWIB online. Since that time, changes in circumstances have meant that Julia Ngapo has left the Somerset group to concentrate on her exciting new business, and Nicholla Henderson-Hall will be leaving the Devon group in December, having finally managed to arrange the flight necessary to reunite her and her daughter with her

husband in Colombia. We wish them both the very best, and particularly hope that Nicholla will still be able to connect with us from Medellin! From January 2021, we will be merging our groups into two larger groups, led by the inspirational Julie Jackson and Sarah Mills, with a reduced cost membership fee. They will each run their normal monthly meeting, focused on getting the very best for members in terms of business growth and personal development. I know they’re both keen to bring back face-to-face networking as soon as it is safe to do so. At the same time, I’ll be forming the Successful Women Members’ Club; the focus there will be on personal growth and support, using a bespoke training platform from the Aspire 4 Business Academy. New courses and workshops will be added every month, supported by

We look forward to continuing to support our members through posts on our social media platforms and use of our new hashtag #swibnet for the Network, as well as #swibtribe for the Club. Preparing for the unexpected Fiona Bolt, director of Cameron Jones Financial Management, talks to us about supporting businesses in difficult times

T

he financial services sector has found itself busy during the pandemic, with accountants and financial advisors in particular providing muchneeded support to their business and private clients. Fiona Bolt, sponsor of the 2020 Successful Women Reinvention Award, and her team worked hard throughout lockdown to make sure their clients and local community in Exmouth had all the advice they needed. Fiona says: “I think this experience has shown us how important it is to create a plan, which can be reviewed and adapted, if necessary, to protect our financial situation. Life does sometimes throw up lemons and being prepared financially can reduce stress when facing times like this. I am so pleased that I’ve been able to support so many clients during such an unprecedented time.”

“I think this experience has shown us how important it is to create a plan... to protect our financial situation” Fiona is a member of the Society of Later Life Advisors and she specialises in advising people during the later stages of their life journey. This could be the transition into retirement where Cash Flow modelling can be used to show monies will never run out, or helping elderly clients and their families explore options for paying for care. She says: “I’m all about working with my clients to help them find their financial freedom. Helping them to make choices to bring their goals and dreams to reality is immensely satisfying. It’s why I love what I do. Financial

management can be a stress point for so many people, and can be intertwined into numerous life events such as death, divorce, children leaving home and retirement. My aim is to be a guide and to simplify complex matters for my clients.”

Pensions are one of Fiona’s main passions and her presentation is very popular at #swibtribe events across the south west. On her sponsorship of the Reinvention Award, Fiona says: “Changing tack in our work journeys later in life is a daunting prospect. I’ve been so impressed with the stories of all the nominees in this award. They show remarkable drive, resilience and inspiration to others. There is no stopping women on a mission to make the best of their careers, regardless of age!”

AnYes van Rhijn knows a thing or two about reinvention; every time life has thrown up challenges, she’s shown resilience in bouncing back and changing her outcome. Now, as The Reinvention Mentor, AnYes helps female business owners live the life they want, as she explains in this interview

© Andreea Tufescu Photography

How to reinvent yourself Gill:

You’ve reinvented yourself multiple times; which one are you most proud of?

AnYes:

Seven years ago, I left a toxic relationship, despite knowing I would lose absolutely everything in the process and had to move in with my sister and her family. Instead of stepping into victimhood, I decided it was an amazing opportunity to reconsider all my choices in life and business. I decided I no longer wanted to work as an Executive Coach, but instead focus on working with female entrepreneurs and business owners. I moved to London at 58, with just two suitcases and no income or savings. Less than three months later I bought the

“It is never too late to reinvent yourself. If I did it, you can do it too!” Central London region of The Athena Network, the UK’s leading female business network. I didn’t have the first cent to pay for it, but found a creative solution to make it work. After four years of very hard work and a lot of sleepless nights, I am now running two successful businesses and the rest is history as they say!

Gill:

AnYes:

I work with overwhelmed female business owners and entrepreneurs who don’t have a life anymore because their business is ruling it. They’ve had enough of it and are determined to do what it takes to step into the driver’s seat and take back control of their life. I help them create, on their own terms, the business that will sustain the reinvented life they desire.

Gill:

What tips do you have for anyone who is thinking about reinventing themselves?

AnYes:

Take stock of where you are in your life, then ask yourself what you like, don’t like and what is missing. Next, clarify what you want your personal and professional life to look like and start turning it into action by creating a plan. What do you need to achieve in 3 years, 1 year, 90 days, etc… so that you can stay intentional and focused every day? The most challenging part is to build the confidence and mindset that will help you succeed. Fear will creep in, of course, but it is key to know how to leverage it as a fuel rather than let it paralyse you. There is much more to reinventing yourself of course, but these are some tips to get going. All of it starts with courage, a firm intention and the determination to make it happen.

Gill:

Where do you see yourselves in five years’ time?

AnYes:

My objective is to reach as many women as possible with my work. I truly believe that women should be financially and emotionally independent, enabling them to become role models for more women to do the same. My transformational Write It, See It, Do It – Turning your Vision into Action, five-week online intensive course, is open again for enrolment. Next to one-to-one mentoring, my Step Into Your Brilliance programme will soon also be accessible as home studies as well as a group programme and a mastermind. Last but not least, my intention is to create a ripple effect of my work by teaching my 4C framework (Clarify, Clear, Create, Consolidate) through a certification programme for coaches. It is never too late to reinvent yourself. If I did it, you can do it too!

AnYes van Rhijn offers a range of services to suit your needs and your budget, from 90-minute focused power sessions to longer-term 1-2-1 mentoring. She also has a five-week online course called Write It, See It, Do It, with the next block starting in January 2021.

About AnYes

Planning your new year goals Make 2021 your best year yet with some good planning. But don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to do your goals for next year. Our very own Gill Donnell explains why…

P

lanning – you either love it or hate it, but as we approach another year, many of us are making plans for how 2021 is going to be so very different from this year. Given what has happened across the globe in 2020, I’m guessing more than ever before we’ll be wishing for better things! Of course, 31st December is a very typical time to set big goals, but I’m not actually a fan of decision making on or around New Year’s Eve. Here are some of my reasons why New Year’s Resolutions don’t make for good goals, and how to set achievable plans.

On NYE you’re much more likely to focus on resolutions relating to what’s on your mind at the time. (Giving up drinking and eating usually tops the list, although obviously not to the point of dehydration and starvation.) In reality, you’re more likely to be successful in goal setting by planning ahead.

Giving yourself decent planning time allows you to properly reflect on what you want to achieve in the coming weeks/months/year and not knee-jerk into what seemed a good idea at the time and probably requires loads of disposable income/free time/willpower to succeed.

26

#SWIBTRIBE | ISSUE 4

The happy (drunken) fog of New Year resoluting (Or is it resolutioning? Where is Stephen Fry when you need him?) usually results in multiple promises to yourself to start over, but one resolution or goal brings a greater chance of success. Channeling your energy and determination into changing just one aspect of your behaviour makes success far more achievable.

Tell the world – according to research, this is especially effective for women. Not actually the world, but friends and family can offer support and hold you accountable. An accountability buddy is proven to help significantly keep you on the straight and narrow.

Have sub-goals, small interim steps that you can reach, achieve and reward yourself for. Celebrate those successes, but within your goal – no bottles of Prosecco for resisting alcohol!

Keep a record of your plans, as well as your progress. I love beautiful notebooks and journals for this, but a goal tracker/workbook specifically designed for this is great.

Try to avoid re-hashing previous resolutions that have ended in failure. Use different words to express what you want and especially keep away from huge unrealistic challenges like losing three stone in three months.

Accept that you’ll have setbacks; creating new behaviours takes time (about 90 days is the suggested optimum), but don’t use them as an excuse to give up. It happens to all of us; just get back on the horse and carry on – swiftly followed by a reward for not giving up! We will be starting a 30-day and 90-day challenge in the new year, so make sure you’re following our social media @swibtribe, to join us in making 2021 your best year yet. ©jessbaileydesign

Erin Thomas Wong started her first business 12 years ago when her son was born. Since then she has built five businesses while bringing up her two sons, and now mentors and supports hundreds of women as they grow and scale their own businesses around family life. Erin’s built her community online as she recognised that many women didn’t have access to in-person networking and business support, so she wanted to create a space where women could log in from anywhere around the world and feel connected, heard and understood. In winning the Digital Communication Award, Erin said: “I was absolutely thrilled to be recognised by SWIB and Em-Power for the work I do online. I’ve always believed that it’s possible to create real relationships in an online setting and I work hard to create a safe space to nurture those connections. Who knew that in 2020 this would be more important than ever. Winning the award was huge in terms of my visibility and a great opportunity for me to shout about what I do and how I can help.”

Introducing the 2020 Successful Women Awards Finalists

T

he business world is full of hugely talented and successful women who not only run businesses, or work in demanding roles, but often also juggle caring responsibilities at the same time. This year, more than ever, has seen many women working heroically to support their families as well as running their businesses. We understand the positive impact on women of recognising and celebrating their successes, so what better than to create awards to demonstrate this to the wider community. The Successful Women Awards were born in 2018, which makes this year our third of celebrating the success of so many. Having launched this year’s awards at our Conference in March, we took the decision to go ahead with the nomination and application process, in the knowledge we were unlikely to be able to hold our ceremony on 5th June, due to the pandemic gripping the world. Despite my desire to hold out for a ‘real life’ event, it’s really important that we celebrate the fabulous finalists’ achievements while still in 2020. You’re likely to be reading this just ahead of our virtual award ceremony on 9th December. I’m really excited that we can celebrate so many wonderful finalists, all of whom are winners in our eyes. A huge thank you to all of our lovely sponsors and marketing partners for making the awards such a success for the third year running. It’s great to have Hannah and Mike Jeffrey of HJ Accounts Management and Louise Matthews back to sponsor for the third time, as well as Humphries Kirk Solicitors and Margo & Mya who are sponsoring again this year. I should also like to thank RT Promotions for stepping in to support our Sustainability category for the ceremony. So turn the page and discover all about our lovely 2020 finalists…
