MUCH MORE THAN A FILM FESTIVAL “The future is multi medial! That’s why CPH:DOX has initiated SWIM as a platform to prepare the film industry for new ways of thinking business as well as creative development.” Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival was founded in 2003 and today the festival is one of the biggest of its kind. During the festival in November more than 200 documentary films, representing the current and most interesting documentary scene are shown. But CPH:DOX is much more than a traditional film festival. All year around CPH:DOX makes innovative events and projects that push and expand the boundaries of what documentary can be and contain with e.g. industry initiatives as DOX:LAB and SWIM.

SUPPORTS TALENTS OF STORYTELLING “New ground is being explored through transmedia in terms of storytelling, ways of reaching an audience and financing. This makes it a very interesting field to follow and be part of right now.” Established in 2003, New Danish Screen is based on a partnership between The Danish Film Institute and two major Danish TV networks – Danish Broadcasting Corporation DR and TV2. The mission is to develop and support the newest talents on the Danish stage for storytelling, fiction and documentary films. This is done through support to both new talents on a professional level as well as less experienced filmmakers that are striving to push boundaries and create new experiences for the audience.

PROMOTING ALL ASPECTS OF FILM “For us to be part of SWIM is to work for the creation of new ways to make and consume film as digital content. Their regional work is run in three main fields: Film Education, Screening and Production. In 2009 Film i Skåne became a part of Business Region Skåne – a marketing initiative, which promotes the region for investments, tourism, events and film.

WHERE CREATORS, AUDIENCE AND BUSINESS MEET “Transmedia enables us to reach our audience early, knowing who they are and what gets them involved. This paves ways for a new kind of storytelling, unexpected creative collaborations, and whole new financing methods.” Based in Helsingborg and supported by the City of Helsingborg and Region Skåne, BoostHbg is a regional hub focusing on new story and business development in innovative media and film. The mission is to develop new storytelling methods and combine powerful stories with deep and authentic audience engagement that has real business potential. PAUL TYLER FOUNDER OF HANDLING IDEAS Paul Tyler believes success comes when you visualize, map and prototype your ideas out on the table. Choosing an object to represent your thoughts exposes justification. Touching and placing an object makes your ideas, concepts and projects more tangible. After a twenty-year career spanning television, crossmedia and theatre he set up HANDLING IDEAS, to make companies more effective at responding to the ever-growing need for deeper user engagement and consistent user experience across multiple devices and activities. Starting at the bottom of the production ladder, Paul worked his way up through BBC apprenticeship to Producer and multi-camera studio Director. A flirtation with online in the late nineties took him to cross-media production. With one of BBC’s first innovative crossmedia productions under his belt, he found himself supporting others within the industry across Europe, as they wrestled with how to interact with their audiences. In the past two years, he has applied his method to over three hundred and thirty projects in fifteen different countries. He will apply his methods with the SWIM LAB participants, as well as give an Open Lecture on ‘Creative Business Modelling – Framing content from context’. handlingideas@paultyler.dk

Climate changes and never-ending gridlocks frustrate people more than ever. Instead of whining, people in cities around the world take on the bicycle as a ‘Do It Yourself’solution. Road rage and poor city planning creates daily deaths amongst the bicyclists. And now they demand safe lanes. It is an uneven fight. Activists and politicians that work for change are facing a multi-billion dollar car, oil and construction industry using all their means to keep society car dependent. We know that the world needs radical changes to save the climate and the environment, but the car industry is selling more
From bike activists in Sao Paulo and Los Angeles fighting for safe bike lanes, to the City of Copenhagen where forty percent commute by bike daily, BIKES VS CARS will look at both the struggle for bicyclists in a society dominated by cars, and the revolutionary changes that could take place if more cities moved away from car-centric models. BIKES VS CARS is a documentary film and will use media platforms - a website as well as an app-based game - to create a community that can interact and share knowledge about the subject. 33

SWIM LAB PROJECTS
A MAGIC FICTIONAL WORLD ABOUT DEATH FILLED WITH HOPE, BELIEF AND LOVE.
How about creating a magic fictional world about death that is filled with hope, belief and love? A world that can lift up the taboo of death and the deep existential thoughts we sometimes feel? That is what the project GABRIEL KLINT intends to do. Through a fictional story, unfolding on different platforms the project wants to help people who are afraid of death or have thoughts about existential questions. The story is about the angel named GABRIEL KLINT who lives in Sweden and saves people who try to commit suicide.
However, the angel is drawn more and more into life on earth – and it all culminates when he meets Abby, his soulmate who is human. The fictional story is used to reach the targetgroup – young people aged 13-18 years – since fiction is considered a more accessible entrance to such subjects. The story unfolds in a magic fictional world created through a web TV series with 10 episodes, a book and an online portal where the audience can communicate and interact, and by that help each other to find hope and zest of life.

RECHO
CREATE A SOUND AND MAKE IT AUDIBLY AVAILABLE EXACTLY WHERE IT IS RECORDED. THAT IS WHAT RECHO IS ABOUT.
RECHO – or Recording Echoes – wants to create an app that is based on one simple dogma: The sounds you record stay where they are recorded. You and others with the app are able to hear them again if you are standing on this exact location. The app will have two main functions: The first is LISTEN. This is the app’s default mode when it is opened. Here you can, like a compass, see the nearest recordings in walking distance. There is no map, just directions and indications of distance. When you get closer to a recording, which is called a recho, a sample of the
dropped sound plays with increased intensity in your earphones. Moving your body to the centre of a recho, allows the sound to play in full volume. On the display of your smartphone you are now able to see information such as: date, author, tags and genre. The second function of the app is RECORD. This is done with a big button in the centre of the compassscreen. Press and hold to record, let go to pause. Click OK, give it a title and some tags, a genre and the sound is published!

AN INTERACTIVE VENTURE INTO THE CREATION OF ART AND MUSIC, WHERE YOU TAKE PART IN THE CREATION.
A son of the Faroe Islands returns after many years - Teitur, who was born and grew up on the islands, records his 5th international album here by the help and hands of local people, their traditions and talents and the sounds of the islands. He lets certain core value principles guide him and by gathering people and bringing them into the music Teitur shares his knowledge. STORY MUSIC is an interactive venture into the creation of art and music, where the viewer is asked to take part in the creation. We follow the waves of inspiration, we see it happening and we join the movement by choosing ourselves intuitively what pattern to follow.
The film brings us close to the transformational process it is to make an album, to manifest something, to make choices and follow them by actions in a daily drama with obstacles and constant struggle. With practical implementation and consequences of choices and with awareness, first of all, of the situation, of yourself and your possibilities. Overcoming is the value you gain. What you give is what you get. STORY MUSIC is a 20 minutes experience that you can return to over and over and never ever see the same film more than once. There are in fact close to 1.000.000.000 different films to watch. 45

THE JADE EMPEROR VS THE FIFTH GRADERS What if you were a ninja? What if you could do the flying-kicks and had the martial arts powers of your fantasysuperheroes?
THE JADE EMPEROR VS THE FIFTH GRADERS aims to create a narrative experience that addresses the secret dream of many young boys: To feel the thrill of being a ninja in the environment of their own lives among dry, aloof or strange schoolteachers and older bullies. Through this narrative experience they address the anger, aggression and wildness of boys and investigate the thrills, pitfalls and joys of fighting – on a boy’s own terms. An experience that deals with the moral dilemmas in an anarchistic, provoking and fun way clashing the ninja-fantasy genre with the social realism of normal school life.
By creating a narrative crossmedia experience for boys in the age of 6-10 years, the project will explore and tap into young boys’ almost biological fascination of fighting and competing between one another. The mission is to embrace the joy and fun of fighting and see it as a positive and natural release of energy rather than simplify it to a violent and domineering behavior that needs to be suppressed.

food hacking in japan will inspire people to participate in shaping an alternative, brighter culinary future.
The global collective of businesses that make up the modern food industry has led to overfished seas, clear-cut forests and pesticidebased monoculture. We are killing our eco-systems and we taste it in the food we eat. Through a documentary and TV series on food hacking in Japan the mission of Yabai! is to inspire people to participate in shaping an alternative, brighter culinary future. By zooming in on Japanese food innovators and the subversive cuisine at the intersection of ecology and technology, Yabai! looks at how robot chefs, biohackers, permaculture designers,
urban farmers and disruptive foodies prototype new ways of cooking more fun, bio-diverse and tasty food. The audience – people interested in food, technologists, ecological communities, hackers, makers or japan-enthusiasts – will be connected directly with contextual information that are shown on their smartphones by LinkLib – an app that help filmmakers to connect smartphones to footnotes in films.
