Brief
Site 2 is located along Don Parade, incorporating the Swinburne Security building, moving through alongside the Glenferrie Train Station and down Columbia Street. One of the main gateways to the University, the space is currently severly lacking in visual amenity, and clearly under developed. A new space is to be developed to create a place for students and the community to gather and enjoy.

Precedent Studies
Our precedent choices are a carefully curated selection which best represent the main ideas through our design. With similarity in design complexity and a range of materiality, they have inspired the way which space has been developed within the security building, and how the design aims to accomodate for a range of different uses at different times of the day. Our precedents show: // The versatility of different spaces // Change in materiality across sites // Use of levels and vantage points as a way of manipulation of space

Design Proposal
Creating a new space on campus that interacts with the wider community must have a clear and cohesive design that works for a range of people, but can also transcend time and work in both night and day scenarios. The space must be accomodating for a quick transit through, provide engaging study options and also allow for space to meet and mingle. Our design has focused on: // Introduction and illusion of new spaces // Manipulation of shadow and light // Development of new gallery and cafe space
Included in a the new site design: // Redesigned Security building featuring new learning and study areas // New University gallery // Updated public space and outdoor lawn // Commercial arch opportunities

Materiality Selection
A range of new materials have been chosen for the new security building, as well as in the new gallery space and also to fit out the new public space. With the aim of creating a contemporary and effective space, the palette is simple while textural, and helps to create a sense of movement through site. The choice of materials helps to bring a sense of occasion to the public space design, and creates visual vectors throughout site with a nod to the train station - sitting parallel with the space. The introduction of lawn adds increased options for meeting spaces, and increases the flexibility of the exterior space. In terms of interior design, we wanted to create a clean and seamless look so that attention was focused on the intricate design elements. By using a seamless material finish, the lines of the balustrade and the handrail becoming defining features, with texture developed through the introduction of a green wall.
