ANNUAL REPORT #Together WeThrive

A MESSAGE FROM CHRISTINE KECK & CURT BEGLE September 30, 2018, marked the close of a very successful year for the Southwest Indiana Chamber. Your Chamber staff and board of directors worked extremely hard as a collaborative force to continue to mold programs, shape perceptions and influence policy that will keep our region moving forward together. We scored many legislative wins for our business community; saw strong programming from the Chamber, supporting many areas of focus within our Alliances; and welcomed a new Chamber president and CEO in Tara Barney to help take our region to the next level. Here are a few of the milestones and achievements to remember and build upon: LEGISLATIVE ACHIEVEMENTS

CHRISTINE KECK CHAIR

The goal of our Advocacy & Public Policy strategic focus is to “be the voice on local, state and national issues that positively or adversely affect our members and the region.” Our areas of focus are based on feedback from our membership. Our 2018 successes were the result of significant strategic advocacy efforts and partnerships. Wins include: House Bill 1002: Reorganization of Workforce Funding and Programs; Senate Bill 50: Governor’s Workforce Cabinet; Senate Bill 221: INSPECT Program, to help fight opioid prescription abuse; Support for Senate Bill 353: Tax Credit Matters, a supported bill that was sent to summer study looking for ways to continue to fund regional development efforts. Bridgelink advocacy efforts drove progress on the draft Environmental Impact Statement completed at the end of 2018 with initial route recommendation coming soon for new bridge connecting Indiana and Kentucky along I-69. DOWNTOWN ALLIANCE – ECONOMIC IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT LAUNCH

CURT BEGLE CHAIR-ELECT

The Chamber’s Downtown Alliance proudly spent the better part of the last four years supporting and advancing the formation of the Economic Improvement District (EID) with the official creation happening in November 2017 by a unanimously passed ordinance of the Evansville City Council. That vote followed a petition process in which a majority of property owners within the EID indicated their support for formation.

The district was created as a means of funding projects ranging from landscape enhancements and holiday decorating to events and marketing programs that will help make downtown Evansville more attractive to developers, businesses and residents. With downtown Evansville as the hub of our region’s core, the EID will serve as another important piece of our region’s growth. ‘E IS FOR EVERYONE’ INITIATIVE

The Chamber continues to lead in support of “E is for Everyone” in year two of the initiative along with other community organizations. This initiative was created to support Evansville’s incredible energy and growth, exciting opportunities and diverse population of citizens. The Chamber will continue to serve in a leading role as this initiative is vital to “telling our region’s story” and helping move our regional economy forward. LAUNCH OF SITI NETWORK

In September the Chamber launched the Southwest Indiana Talent Infusion Network (SITI Network) aimed at helping our manufacturers map current career pathways for high school students and adult workers. The purpose of the network is to better connect potential workers with our manufacturers and to highlight best practices in order to meet our employers’ workforce needs in the coming years. The Network is made up primarily of Tri-State Manufacturers Alliance members and local non-profit and education partners.

Your Southwest Indiana Chamber is proud to be leading collaborative efforts to position our region as “THE PLACE” to live, work and grow a business in the Midwest, the U.S. and beyond. Collaboration is the key, and at the Chamber we know “Together We Thrive.”
