LIFESTYLE HEALTH

CHAMBER ASSOCIATION PROGRAM

The Southwest Indiana Chamber is pleased to introduce Lifestyle Health Plans as a unique health benefits program designed for Chamber members to address the underlying causes of the rise in healthcare costs - employee health behaviors. This program is made available through a partnership with NFP. WHAT MAKES LIFESTYLE HEALTH DIFFERENT? • Level-funded major medical plan designs • Underwritten by “A” rated carriers • Member savings averaging 5-15% in most cases • Integrated wellness incentives and cash-rewards • Up to a $500 deductible credit available to all wellness participants • Integrated concierge telemedicine, outpatient lab and diabetic supply benefits WHAT IS LEVEL FUNDED? Level-funded plans are essentially pre-packaged self-insured health plans, with low attachment stop-loss coverage. For many groups, level-funded plans reduce healthcare spend significantly versus a fully insured ACA small group plan. And because of their structure, levelfunded plans do not have the volatility in monthly cash flows, associated with self-insured plans, that can cripple a small business. HERE’S HOW A LEVEL-FUNDED PLAN WORKS: Level-funded plans are underwritten, health applications are required. For larger groups applications can be avoided if two years of claims history can be provided.

Lean in on young talent

L

ast month we had reason to celebrate. I shared this with many: ". . . 2,000+ newly credentialed young adults are our newest community asset. We've been investing in them — as a community, as a family and as a state — since they were newborns. That's a lot of investment! Now that we’ve got them... what do we do with them? More than 2000 high school graduates, many with A message from career and college plans, some with an eye TARA BARNEY on the military, all with hope and energy President & CEO to “commence,” to begin their next steps in life. Are those next steps here with us, or are they elsewhere? They have choices. So do we. We can nod congratulations and go on with our day, or we can show some collective pride in our accomplishment. Their success is this community’s success. We’ve had a hand; they’ve done the work and earned their degree; we’ve nurtured, supported, coached and encouraged along the way. Let’s make sure our most valued community asset, the High School Graduating Class of 2019, knows that Southwest Indiana is proud of their accomplishments and that we look forward to them joining us in growing the future we all want!" Add the thousands of credentialed graduates of our region’s colleges and universities, and we can agree that we have a rich pool of talent that we either watch leave or invite to stay in our community. Greater Evansville and Southwest Indiana need to grow. In particular, we need this young adult population. Why? They inject energy, new thinking and long career horizons into our local economy. They can contribute to filling our critical employment shortage, start families and strengthen our community. This opportunity is all of ours. Every one of us. Are we going to hire them, mentor them, listen to them? Or let them migrate to the 10 biggest US cities and hope some find their way back — eventually. Let’s play to our strengths: our region stacks up well against our peers in the percentage of young adults already living and working here. That matters; we know that young adults attract more young adults. And we have a very competitive cost of living. What can each of us do to lean in to this young talent pool? Congratulate their success and offer a hand as they make choices that matter for all. Together we can and will thrive!

Let's welcome Wild Bird Center of Evansville as a new member to the Southwest Indiana Chamber. Wild Bird Center is located at 3521 N. Green River Rd. and can be reached at (812) 303-3400 or online at www.wildbird.com/ evansville/. Owners Darvin & Becky Wil and Greg & Mary Miller have always been avid bird enthusiasts and are pleased to be able to provide top-of-the-line, quality products as well as expert advice and personal service to their Wild Bird Center customers. Read on to learn more about Wild Bird Center! Tell us about Wild Bird Center of Evansville and the services you offer. We are dedicated to providing high-quality, long-lasting products that make backyard bird feeding an enjoyable and relaxing hobby for our customers in the Evansville and surrounding communities. We provide expert advice and products that perform – and we stand behind what we sell. Our customers are treated as friends, sharing a common interest and passion for nature. We offer a wide variety of backyard bird feeding products, including houses, feeders, seed, suet and seed cylinders. In addition to these items, we also offer bird baths, hummingbird feeders and accessories, wind chimes, “Down Under” flower pots, bird books, Charlie Harper artwork paper products and more. We also have several customer loyalty programs to enhance your shopping experience. What inspired you to invest your time and resources in this business? Both couples who own and operate the business are backyard bird watching and nature enthusiasts. Additionally, we had all talked in the past about going into business for ourselves. Quite simply, all of the pieces aligned for us about a year ago to pursue this venture and make it happen. What career advice would you give the younger generation interested in this type of work? We learned so much about small business and retail sales in a short amount of time. Our advice would be to do your homework. Research, talk to people, engage friends and family who can share expertise. But above all else, be sure that you are passionate about what you are pursuing and have fun doing it. In your opinion, what are three ingredients for success? This is so simple, but so very true – be nice to people and treat everyone with respect. Be passionate about your business, strive to make a difference and have fun. New Member Profile, continued

T

TOMORROW’S LEADERS

he talent pool of 20- and 30-something business professionals in the region has grown over the past several years, and many have benefited from initiatives started by the Young Professionals Alliance of the Southwest Indiana Chamber. The only qualifications to be a member of YPA is to be under 40 and work for a business that is a Chamber member. “I’ve always thought of YPA as a hub for young professionals,” said Nate Hahn, executive director at Evansville Regional Airport who has had a longtime affiliation with the organization. “It is the go-to place for young people in Evansville who want to grow friendships, grow their knowledge, grow their business network and just develop themselves and their professional career.” Hahn, who joined the organization shortly after moving to Evansville in 2011, said YPA also opens up many avenues for members to learn more about the city and how to be better community partners. “Over the last several years of my involvement there was more of a focus on collaboration among members, access to business executives and variety of meeting topics,” he said. One of the best ways for members to network, however, is at the annual YP Conference.

YP CONFERENCE

This year’s YP Conference will be held Friday, Aug. 2, at Ridgway Center on the University of Evansville campus. Keynote speaker is John Henry, one of Forbes magazine’s “30 Under 30” who is also listed on Ebony magazine’s Power 100. The goal of the conference is to provide professional and personal development, along with presenting an amazing opportunity to network with a variety of local executives at the CEO luncheon. “Last year was our first year for the conference, and we had such a great turnout and positive feedback, we’re hoping to invest in this long-term,” said Josey Roth, chair of the YPA Steering

Participants in the YPA Engage program kicked off the summer internship program by attending the YPA event Shaping Evansville - 3 Mayors Perspective on the History of Evansville on May 16, 2019.

Committee and the director of strategic planning and organizational development at Evansville Christian Life Center. “I knew several young professionals at last year’s conference who made a connection with someone that led to a new job opportunity. That is the type of connection we want these young professionals to have access to.” The YP Conference is partnered by YPA, Multicultural Professionals Network, Young Leaders United and Rotaract of Evansville. Roth said another goal of the conference is for attendees to feel like they received personal and professional development and learn something new that they could apply in their workplace or in making a big career decision. “If the community gives young professionals the opportunity to invest in both themselves and their career, they are twice as likely to want to stick around here, which then leads to an increase in talent retention for companies,” Roth said. “Talent retention drives the long-term success of a business, and the long-term success of business drives long-term sustainability for a city. Therefore, we believe initiatives like this are a win for everyone.”

YPA ENGAGE

Another initiative created by the YPA is YPA Engage. The recently formed program connects local interns from Chamber businesses to activities and networking opportunities in the Region. “YPA members serve in a mentor role and help connect and engage interns with each other and the region,” Roth said. She added that the Chamber connects with representatives who are in charge of interns within their company to recruit interns into the program. “I think it is a great idea and I hope more community members and companies support both YPA Engage and the YP Conference,” Hahn said. “We talk a lot about making sure YPs are happy in Evansville and want to live here, work here, play here and grow our community.”

PROREHAB POSEYVILLE ProRehab celebrated a grand opening at 7 W. Main St. in Poseyville with a ribboncutting. 'TOMORROW’S LEADERS'

One of YPA’s taglines is “Today’s young professionals are tomorrow’s leaders,” and Hahn said the group’s main focus of seeking out and bringing in talented 20- and 30-year-olds to Southwest Indiana is even more important in today’s competitive business circles. “It takes all of us to realize young professionals are a hot commodity in the current business market,” Hahn said. “If we want to attract new and retain current top-tier talent, then we need to start investing time, money and energy in those YPs who are coming here as interns, at their first jobs or after their first promotions to help them connect with one another, the business world and our community. “Because once you fall in love with our community, you won’t want to leave.”

New Member Profile, continued Use your knowledge to help educate your customers. What has been one of your toughest challenges? None of us really had any small business retail experience when we started down this path. We worried a lot about whether or not we were doing the right things; checking all the boxes. We questioned ourselves every day about the decisions we were making. Fortunately, we are all quick learners! Why is the Evansville region a great place to operate a business? This area is home to all of us. We very much support the “Buy Local” and “e is for everyone” themes. We all love this area and the people here. We truly think there is a large market in our community for what we offer – and we are ready to help educate and provide the tools needed to enhance the backyard birding experience. What do you like most about the community in which you live? There is a small town feel here, but yet the town is not so small. We have invested a fair amount of capital in marketing to get our business name out there. But what we have learned is that our best advertising is “word of mouth” in the community. It is also amazing to consider how many great people we have met and the connections made in the short amount of time we have been open. SWIN Chamber has certainly been a huge part of that. We would wholeheartedly recommend Chamber membership to any area business owners like ourselves! Is there anything else you would like to share? We are truly passionate about our business venture and very much want to pass along our enthusiasm to our customers. Whether you know nothing at all about the birds in your yard or are a lifetime birding expert, we believe we have something to offer from one end of the hobby scale to the other. Thank you, Wild Bird Centers of Evansville, for taking time to share with us!
