I-69 Bridgelink Update

New Member Profile

C

oming soon will be the biggest single infrastructure investment in our region— ever—the I-69 Bridge Project. More than just the bridge, this project will modernize existing interchanges, solve safety and congestion issues, open our options for moving about the region, and spur economic development. Our region is the largest in the United States with only one cross-river access over a major river. We have all learned to live with the congestion and the interruptions that come with the US 41 A message from Ohio River crossing, but change is coming. The Southwest Indiana Chamber has been a long- TARA BARNEY time advocate for the construction of I-69, the President & CEO Interstate Corridor that will ultimately connect the Michigan Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico by way of our region, Memphis and then across Texas. With Gov. Eric Holcomb’s Next Level funding commitment, completion of I-69 through Indiana is certain. Now we need to ensure that our region does not become the cul-de-sac that forces interstate traffic onto our aging bridges that are already congested with our local traffic. Both the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet have been working with the Federal Highway Administration to complete a joint recommendation (the DEIS) for the I-69 Bridge we’ve anticipated for decades. They released the recommended route (details available at www. i69ohiorivercrossing.com) which will cross the Ohio River about 1.5 miles east of U.S. 41 The recommendation also proposes keeping the northbound span of the existing bridges only. Finally, the DIES proposes tolling the new bridge crossing and leaves open the question of tolling our existing bridge. Over the past month hundreds of you attended the public hearings and community conversations hosted by the bridge project team. Many hundreds more provided opinions or asked questions about the recommended route, the proposal to take down half of the existing bridge pair and about where and how much tolling is acceptable. Thank you if you participated. Your input will all be incorporated in the next important step of the process, making a final decision on the project route corridor and sorting out how the project is paid for. Here’s what the Project Team heard: • Broad support for the recommended corridor. It will be the least expensive, require the least interference with businesses operating along the 41 corridor, require taking the fewest homes, and have the least impact on the environment. • Lots of support for keeping both existing bridges that comprise the U.S. 41 crossing. • Broad concern with tolling the U.S. 41 bridges because of the impact on our local workforce traveling between home and work, getting to medical services, and having the opportunity to do business back and forth without added cost. The Southwest Indiana Chamber has long supported the interests we heard expressed during January and will continue working to make this project a reality as soon as possible because with this new bridge, we will prove that “Together we Thrive.”

Let's welcome VIV as a new member to the Southwest Indiana Chamber. VIV is located at 10999 Stahl Road in Newburgh and can be reached at (812) 618-9498 or online at www.vivabove.com. Read on as Austin Hoffman tells us about VIV! Tell us about VIV and the services you offer. VIV has been providing integrated digital marketing solutions since 2015. We bring cutting-edge thinking, creative execution and professional excellence to every project, and invest our full attention to understanding your needs to the fullest. We believe digital marketing needs to ignite emotion in order to spark action, and that’s why we strive to make every campaign completely human, regardless of the digital means that we use to promote it. What inspires you to do this business? A website design company quoted me $135,000 for my website; I thought, there’s gotta be an easier way to do this. I decided to teach myself how to design a website, which led me, a business major, to pursue website design as a business. My friend Logan Schroering and myself started our fledgling company by specializing in creating custom websites with more competitive pricing than what I had experienced. We perfected a pricing model and made sure our sites weren’t cookie-cutter like a lot of our competition. Every build we launch starts with a dream – our client’s dream. And the first thing we do to discover that dream is listen to our clients. We want to hear about our client’s company, your goals and your expectations. Once we understand what their goals are, we select the team that’s most suitable to make it happen. We choose every member of our client’s team with our client’s goal in mind, and get them on board at the beginning of the process, so there is no doubt about where it’s all going to lead. What career advice would you give the younger generation interested in this type of work? Just go for it. Being as young as we were we had a vision and stuck to it. Find a great mentor like we did as well. You’re going to have hiccups but that’s part of being a business owner. Push through and keep winning. In your opinion, what are three ingredients for success? Have a good mentor, create a great team and have driven goals. What has been one of the toughest challenges? One of our toughest challenges has been our youth, starting a business at age 20, and building the company while going to school. What is your favorite thing about your work? Building this business with long-time friend Logan Schroering and watching it grow. Thank you, Austin Hoffman, VIV, for taking the time to share with us!

If the calendar says February, then it’s time once again for the Athena Award® Luncheon. The Southwest Indiana Chamber has proudly hosted the annual event, which acknowledges and honors outstanding women leaders in the community, since the 1990s. Representatives as well as nominees of the Athena Award act as guiding lights for others by actively and generously assisting those who seek to attain professional excellence and leadership skills. This year’s award presentation will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the Old National Events Plaza in downtown Evansville. Tara Barney, president and CEO of the Chamber, said the Athena Award Luncheon provides a great opportunity to reflect on the critical importance of women in the community. “Without these strong, outgoing individuals accomplishing all that they have and inspiring so many others to follow in their footsteps, our community would not be able to have reached the heights and pulled off all the successes it has over the past several decades,” Barney said. Chicago-based Athena International is a nonprofit organization founded in 1982 by Martha Mertz. In addition to supporting, developing and honoring women leaders, the organization seeks to create balance in leadership worldwide and inspire women to achieve their full potential. Since the program’s inception, nearly 6,000 leaders in more than 500 communities have received the Athena Award. In all, 26 women have represented Evansville’s Athena Award since Roxy Baas was named the inaugural representative in 1990. Last year’s representative was Chris Ryan, CEO of Deaconess Women’s Hospital. FOLLOWING ARE THE 2019 ATHENAS:

• Gina Gibson – Executive Director at Evansville Christian Life Center • Mary Kessler – Dean of Education and Health Sciences at University of Evansville • Deena Laska Lewis – Founder and Choreographer at Children’s Center for Dance Education • Millie Marshall – President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana • Susan Parsons – CFO at Koch Enterprises • Carrie Roelle – Partner at Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn, LLP Kathy Schoettlin, EVP, chief community relations and social responsibility officer at Old National Bank, said representing the 2010 Athena Award means as much to her today as it did back then. “No words can describe how very honored and touched I was to be the representative of the 2010 Athena Award,” said Schoettlin. “I attribute the recognition to the tremendous group of people who have surrounded me throughout my career — personally and professionally. I’m still humbled to be a representative and to be listed alongside such amazing community leaders, many who I consider as personal role models.” Schoettlin said with so many strong and influential women leaders in

Old National Bancorp announced that Bob Jones will retire as chief executive officer after over 14 years of service with the company and almost 40 years in banking. During Jones’s tenure, Old National was recognized seven times (2012-2018) as one of the Ethisphere Institute’s World’s Most Ethical Companies, and American Banker magazine has recognized the company twice as a “Great Place to Work.” Jones serves on numerous boards, including Vectren, the University of Evansville, the Evansville Regional Business Committee, Inc. THE

LIFESTYLE HEALTH

CHAMBER ASSOCIATION PROGRAM

The Southwest Indiana Chamber is pleased to introduce Lifestyle Health Plans as a unique health benefits program designed for Chamber members to address the underlying causes of the rise in healthcare costs - employee health behaviors. This program is made available through a partnership with NFP. WHAT MAKES LIFESTYLE HEALTH DIFFERENT? • Level-funded major medical plan designs • Underwritten by “A” rated carriers • Member savings averaging 5-15% in most cases • Integrated wellness incentives and cash-rewards • Up to a $500 deductible credit available to all wellness participants • Integrated concierge telemedicine, outpatient lab and diabetic supply benefits WHAT IS LEVEL FUNDED? Level-funded plans are essentially pre-packaged self-insured health plans, with low attachment stop-loss coverage. For many groups, level-funded plans reduce healthcare spend significantly versus a fully insured ACA small group plan. And because of their structure, levelfunded plans do not have the volatility in monthly cash flows, associated with self-insured plans, that can cripple a small business. HERE’S HOW A LEVEL-FUNDED PLAN WORKS: Level-funded plans are underwritten, health applications are required. For larger groups applications can be avoided if two years of claims history can be provided.
