President & CEO Letter
Ensuring a
S
bright future
outhwest Indiana is a great landscape for businesses to grow. From Toyota rolling out its 5 millionth vehicle, to Berry Global, an $8 billion Fortune 500 company, celebrating 51 years in business. Businesses start here and thrive here. Your Southwest Indiana Chamber is committed to leading and supporting this business environment by representing your interests with our local, state and national elected officials. Every year we survey you, our members. Your advice informs our Public Policy Agenda. Then, with the leadership of our A message from Board of Directors and your voice, we work closely with TARA BARNEY our elected partners to continue building the business President & CEO climate that is key for our region’s prosperity. Your feedback is loud and clear: • Complete I-69 by building the bridge that will both connect our region and make the corridor a vital addition to our logistics grid • Invest in our infrastructure including broadband, water and sewer, bridges and our waterways • Focus on the health of our population • Address our critical need for the talent business demands to thrive • Make Quality of Place a priority Some have asked me to define this last priority, Quality of Place. For me, it is the collection of experiences, marketplaces, neighborhoods, arts and cultural offerings, housing and institutions that make a community “sticky,” welcoming to all and “cool.” Our investments and focus on building “quality” is key to retaining and attracting the young talents our businesses need. We’re starting to see a glimpse of how quality of place projects are making Southwest Indiana a location for talent through the Regional Cities Initiative. Our plan covers 18 projects that include building the region’s core, Evansville, through projects like The Post House, a living laboratory where residents are part of the experiment; to the new downtown Evansville YMCA; and, the renovation of Evansville’s Regional Airport creating welcoming environments for the 21st century traveler. Equally critical for our region, projects throughout our Gateway Communities including Oakland City University’s Boulevard Commons student housing, Newburgh’s Warrick Trail Network, the Warrick Wellness Trail’s expanding medical footprint, and New Harmony’s historic bridge, are forging our unified future as never before. Investments are being generated throughout the region for quality of place projects. Already $926 million in public/private dollars has been committed, spurring additional related investments bringing the total over a billion dollars within our first three years. Collaboration has been a driver of Southwest Indiana’s success for Regional Cities. So, I am asking you to help spread the message that working together we can build on this momentum. Let’s bring additional “Quality” initiatives for the attraction of people to the state and specifically to Southwest Indiana. Here’s how you can help: • Share this video with other business and civic leaders: http://bit.ly/IndGreatSW • Continue the Regional Cities conversation with elected officials about the priority of cultivating high-quality communities • Celebrate our progress: Our region is starting to see and realize how vital quality of place is….not just to current residents, but to attract a sustainable workforce today. Join with us.

Be Happy Pie Company Let's welcome Be Happy Pie Company as a new member to the Southwest Indiana Chamber. Be Happy Pie Company is located at 2818 B Mt. Vernon Ave. in Evansville and can be reached at (812) 4497718 or online at www.behappypiecompany.com. Read on as Jenny Lamble, owner, tells us about Be Happy Pie Company!
Rick Lamble and Jenny Lamble, co-owners of Be Happy Pie Company, with their daughter, Emma Lamble
Tell us about Be Happy Pie Company and the services you offer. Be Happy Pie Company is a locally owned family bakery that specializes in homemade pies, cookies, scones and kuchens as well as our famous chicken pot pie and quiche. We got our start in 2015 at the Franklin Street Bazaar and then opened our storefront in October of 2017 on Evansville’s west side. Baking for others is our passion. We offer 10-inch, 3-three inch and 1-inch pies in a variety of flavors including our signature "Be Happy" Cherry Pie. We cater weddings, showers, corporate events and parties of all sizes as well as welcoming walk-ins to our little bakery. Be Happy Pie Company’s founding principles of freshness, quality and friendliness are evident when you visit our store. What inspires you to do this business? A passion for baking for others has carried me on a journey that led from a hobby to a profession. I was hooked with my very own Easy Bake Oven as a kid. Being part of people’s celebrations is exciting, and knowing that we’ve made something delicious that creates memories is very rewarding. I have very clear memories of celebrating special events, and they always seemed to center around dessert thanks to my mom and grandma. What career advice would you give the younger generation interested in this type of work? Follow your passion, but get a credential whether it be a college degree or a certificate. Be prepared for long hours and do not worry about what is not in your control. Smile and breathe! In your opinion, what are three ingredients for success? Determination, organization and persistence. Having an incredible support system has also helped tremendously. New Member Profile, continued inside back page

Regional Cities
T
he Southwest Indiana area is one of three regions in Indiana that in 2015 was awarded $42 million in state-matching funds geared toward projects that are designed to retain and attract talent to the region. Known as the Indiana Regional Cities Initiative, the program is the driving force behind a huge undertaking that will help reshape the region for generations to come, say local officials. The $42 million will leverage a total of $975 million in investments within the region in combined public and private dollars. The Southwest Indiana Regional Development Authority manages the Regional Cities monies; oversees the progress of each project; and ensures the funds are distributed properly. When drawing up the initial proposal, Southwest Indiana officials had detailed specific goals for the initiative, including: • Grow region population by 70,000, going toward state’s goal of increasing overall Indiana population by 2 million by 2025 • Retain 80% of physician residents • Increase Evansville downtown population by 2,500 residents • Build the brand of Southwest Indiana • Become the Midwestern city of choice for people desiring mid-size city living Audrie Burkett, vice president and COO of the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana, said 14 projects have been approved to receive Regional Cities funding, three are pending approval and one is planned for submission. As of July 2018, three have already reached completion. As the scope of some projects changed, SWIRDA reallocated funds toward other projects in June, as is noted below. Following is a rundown showing where each of the remaining Regional Cities project stands, as of the most recent report in July 2018: POST HOUSE

THE
LIFESTYLE HEALTH
CHAMBER ASSOCIATION PROGRAM
The Southwest Indiana Chamber is pleased to introduce Lifestyle Health Plans as a unique health benefits program designed for Chamber members to address the underlying causes of the rise in healthcare costs - employee health behaviors. This program is made available through a partnership with NFP. WHAT MAKES LIFESTYLE HEALTH DIFFERENT? • Level-funded major medical plan designs • Underwritten by “A” rated carriers • Member savings averaging 5-15% in most cases • Integrated wellness incentives and cash-rewards • Up to a $500 deductible credit available to all wellness participants • Integrated concierge telemedicine, outpatient lab and diabetic supply benefits WHAT IS LEVEL FUNDED? Level-funded plans are essentially pre-packaged self-insured health plans, with low attachment stop-loss coverage. For many groups, level-funded plans reduce healthcare spend significantly versus a fully insured ACA small group plan. And because of their structure, levelfunded plans do not have the volatility in monthly cash flows, associated with self-insured plans, that can cripple a small business. HERE’S HOW A LEVEL-FUNDED PLAN WORKS: Level-funded plans are underwritten, health applications are required. For larger groups applications can be avoided if two years of claims history can be provided.

What has been one of the toughest challenges? The toughest challenge for me has been balancing the hours required to be successful with having quality time with my family. My family has been so supportive and understanding. My husband, Rick, and daughter, Emma, are always there to help me with whatever I need. I could not do this without them. What is your favorite thing about your work? There are so many favorites about my work! One of them is coming in early to my awesome kitchen and baking delicious desserts. The smells, Frank Sinatra playing on the radio, and the smiles and excitement from the customers are pretty cool, too! Knowing that our treats bring happiness to others is so satisfying. What do you like most about the community in which you live? Our customers are AMAZING! Not only are they our customers, but we are fortunate enough to call many our friends. They share their stories about who baked for them and what they like to bake. Many have even shared their own recipes with us. Baking for others has brought happiness, comfort and excitement not only to us, but for them in times of celebration and struggle. Our community is full of incredibly giving people, and it is a blessing to get to know so many new friends. Is there anything else you would like to share? We are taking orders for the holidays now, so stop by to place your order or call us at 812-449-7718.
