COMING TOGETHER

President & CEO Letter

SUMMER OFFERS MANY

WORKFORCE OPPORTUNITIES

I

t’s summer! Time for festivals, vacations, baseball and lazy days on the river. And for our youth, that time-honored tradition of a summer job. Always a right-of-passage, but today’s summer work experiences are more than a source of spending money, they are an essential part of our region’s talent pipeline. Internships, co-op experiences, job shadowing days...all are key to introducing our next generation to the jobs and careers A message from of tomorrow. They are equally important for our member businesses and regional TARA BARNEY President & CEO employers. These early opportunities for a constructive relationship between future employers and employees certainly provide great work opportunities, but for our employers they are a critical strategy to recruiting a future workforce. Our businesses get to know their potential future employees and the students get to know and evaluate the business and our community. And they do evaluate—much like those old lazy days on the river, the era of young talent saying yes to the first job offer to come along is nostalgia. A meaningful work opportunity is a winner if these NextGens can see them-selves living here. What’s our play this summer? Hundreds of our businesses are hosting and employing students as summer interns. Many of these students live and attend school elsewhere. We can increase the odds of fueling our talent pipeline by being great hosts. We all win if we partner with business to share the best of our vibrant and cool region, its special places and the fantastic array of music, art, sports and festivals. Join us, as together we can help close the hiring deal by seeking out these talented summer guests and making them welcome. The Chamber, the Indiana Small Business Development Center, the state of Indiana, and many aligned partners are here to support businesses contributing to our region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. We provide innovators with the resources, technical assistance and expert counseling needed to grow business in Southwest Indiana. We support the work of our elected officials to enable a forward-looking business climate and the infrastructure essential to robust business growth. The Chamber has its pulse on the priorities of business, small and large: a welcoming and high-quality, business-friendly location; access to capital and customers; and a pipeline to the well-prepared talent we will need to continue to thrive. If your business offers summer work experiences, thank you! Please tell us the details and we’ll get it posted under 'Member News' on our website to help get the word out. Just email the information to news@ swinchamber.com. At the Chamber, we value young talent and we are supporting initiatives to help your business recruit and grow the thriving talent pool we need for future success. Together we thrive!

Seton Harvest

New Member Profile

Julie Dietz - Community Outreach Manager and Joe Schalasky - Farm Manager

Let's welcome Seton Harvest as a new member to the Southwest Indiana Chamber. Seton Harvest is located in Evansville and can be reached at 812-963-7530 or online at www.setonharvest.org. Read on as Julie Dietz, community outreach manager, describes how their work is vital to our community. Tell us about Seton Harvest and the services you offer. Seton Harvest, a ministry of the Daughters of Charity Providence of St. Louise, is a community supported agriculture that provides fresh natural, locally grown produce to shareholders and to those in need. What inspires your group? Seton Harvest is inspired by the Daughters of Charity and their nature to help the less fortunate. Seton Harvest donates 20% of what is harvested to homeless shelters, food banks, church pantries and the elderly community. In 11 seasons, we have donated over 111,000 pounds to 12 different local facilities. What career advice would you give the younger generation interested in this type of work? The advice that I would give to the younger generation is to love the Earth, love where you live and take pride in it. Try to do your part, recycle, reuse and reduce and to educate yourself on growing your own food naturally. In your opinion, what are three ingredients for success? 1. Ownership - you must love what you do and own it, make everyone want to know more about what you do 2. Collaboration - working with others to make things happen for your community. If you don’t, who will. 3. Hard work - nothing easy is worth having, working hard and feeling the accomplishment at the end. Knowing all the work you put in is paying off. What has been one of the toughest challenges? There are many challenges to a farm, but the toughest challenge for our farm is the weather. This spring has to be one of the toughest for our farm as it has put us, and most farmers, about four weeks behind. Thankfully we have very understanding shareholders who know the risks and rewards they are in for when they sign up. New Member Profile, continued last page

COMING TOGETHER F

MEETING THE NEEDS OF LOCAL FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESSES

amily-owned businesses are quite prevalent throughout the region, but they come with their own set of unique problems and situations. That’s why in early 2015 the Southwest Indiana Chamber established the Family Business Alliance as a means for those companies to come together, compare notes and learn from each other what does and does not work in operating a business alongside relatives. Bill Theby, current chairman of the FBA Steering Committee, said the time seemed right to put together an entity that would allow family-owned businesses to be of benefit to one another. “Our thought when forming the steering committee was, how do we pull these businesses together to share their stories,” Theby said, noting that they are a big part of the regional workforce. “You generally create more jobs through these companies than some of the other big businesses.” Kim Howard, another member of the steering committee, said the Alliance provides resources to support and encourage family enterprises through educational events, networking with like-minded companies and access to industry experts. “They face challenging issues and hurdles, so we strive to find professionals in areas like succession planning to help them navigate these challenges,” Howard said. She said in that first year they hosted three events with close to 400 attendees, underscoring the great need for and high level of interest in the Alliance. “We know that family-based companies are a major contributor to the U.S. economy,”

CARVER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION Carver Community Organization celebrated with a ribbon-cutting at 400 S.E. Eighth Street. Carver Community Organization's mission is to provide unique services within a safe environment that teaches respect for self, others and the community. Contact them at 812-423-2612 or online at www.carverorg.org.

– Kim Howard, regional director Southwest ISBDC Howard said. She said these businesses account for 50% of the national gross domestic product and are responsible for 60% of the nation’s employment and 78% of new jobs created. Howard said the steering committee drives the FBA’s mission and agenda by identifying and presenting resources that are key to assisting family-owned businesses. “The committee determines programming based on input from these businesses and stakeholders,” Howard said. “The committee then executes the initiatives in the business plan that was developed, following a SWOT analysis.” The committee’s next big event for family-owned businesses will be August 16, when it hosts its Summer Panel at Evansville Country Club. Presentations will be given by Peter Fehrenbacher of Fehrenbacher Cabinets Inc. and Kyle Brinker of Brinker’s Jewelers. Both are third-generation, locally owned, family businesses. Topics that generally come up are, how did you get started, what has been your most challenging problem, and how has running this type of business affected your family. Past presenters have included Azzip Pizza, Goldman’s Pawn Shop and Romain Buick. “We’re hoping that everyone who attends an event or participates in a peer group has the chance to make new connections and be exposed to best practices in the business community that will assist them in growing a healthy family business,” Howard said. Added Theby: “People understand your set of problems because they’re also going through them at the same time. But to be able to pass these things on and keep it in the family for many generations, it’s a really neat deal.” Past events have proven to be a hit with those affiliated with the Family Business Alliance. Following is a comment from Craig Seibert of Harding, Shymanski after he attended an FBA presentation: “‘Developing a Plan for Your Family Enterprise’ with Greg McCann was an awesome event! The thing I liked most about the event, was it was like going to a marriage counselor prior to the big day. It gave us a chance to talk to each other about the transition phase of the business and how we need to handle it. For two people who do not typically like to talk about ‘feelings,’ this gave us the perfect atmosphere to get things going in the right direction. In seven days we plan on sitting down with my two younger brothers and speaking to them about their current and future interest into the company. Thanks again for giving us the opportunity to attend the Family Business Alliance event!”

What is your favorite thing about your work? There are so many things that are my favorites… I am fortunate to love my job, and love my coworkers, but our mission has to be the top of the list... Providing and educating the less fortunate on fresh, natural local produce. Knowing that we are providing the best produce to them where they may not be able to afford it. Teaching the best way to get the most out of what they are receiving. When you hear and see the excitement from the clients of the facilities that we donate to, it warms my heart and it makes me want to strive to continue to do the best you can for them and to work to be able to provide more. What do you like most about the community in which you serve? That our community is very accepting of new things and that they love local business. I love how our local businesses also support other local businesses. Is there anything else you would like to share? Our farm is not only about providing fresh naturally and locally grown produce to our community, it is about building a community. From our shareholders to the facilities that we donate to, to the less fortunate, we are all interested in sustainable agriculture and healthy lifestyles and creating a better world for all of us. Thank you, Julie Dietz, community outreach manager, and Joe Schalasky, farm manager, of Seton Harvest, for taking the time to share with us!
