Vice President & COO Letter

I

2018: Shared Vision and Collaboration

n any region of the country there are a number of economic drivers that can be observed to demonstrate the social and economic health of a region, directionally. Success in these wideranging indicators such as population growth, poverty levels, health indexes, graduation rates, employment growth, wage rates, etc., are often motivating factors for individuals and businesses looking for a place to start or continue a career and start or expand a business enterprise. In Southwest Indiana, we continue to make great progress in many of these areas and key for our region is to not A message from be shy about promoting our successes nor be shy TIM HAYDEN about exploring opportunities for improvement. Vice-President & COO In 2018, the Southwest Indiana Chamber celebrated a number of successes including legislative wins that supported workforce development efforts, a regional development tax credit to encourage continued investment in our region, and legislation aimed at curbing opioid substance abuse for the health of our region. A new bridge connecting Indiana and Kentucky along I-69 would provide opportunities for significant economic expansion on both sides of the Ohio River, and Bridgelink committee advocacy efforts continue to support the completion of the bridge with the draft Environmental Impact Statement completed at the end of 2018. In addition, we celebrated the realization of the vision that so many community and business leaders have shared for our region with the opening of the Stone Family Center for Health Sciences, construction starts of the new downtown Evansville YMCA, the Post House mixed-use development, and the new downtown Evansville Hyatt Place hotel, all in our region’s vital core. And the completion of renovation and modernization efforts to Evansville Regional Airport now provides a beautiful front door to our region. We also celebrated exciting regional projects throughout our Gateway Communities. These projects include: the Warrick Trail Network and the Warrick Wellness Trail; Newburgh’s new hotel, TownePlace Suites; as well as continued revitalization efforts in Posey County including the Southwest Indiana Chamber Posey County Office and Posey County Economic Development Partnership relocating their offices to downtown Mt. Vernon. These successes clearly support so many of the vitally important economic drivers mentioned in the beginning of this letter. Successes like these would not have been possible without the strong leadership, vision, and collaborations of so many outstanding leaders in local government, local business, and numerous community focused organizations across the region. Chamber President and CEO Tara Barney and I look forward with anticipation to the great opportunities awaiting us in the coming year. Progress often takes time to manifest the benefits we hope to achieve, and it can be challenging to move regions toward shared goals. Southwest Indiana is no exception to these challenges but the momentum that we have gained in recent years, as evidenced by the projects and initiatives mentioned here, can take our region to even greater heights. With initiatives like “E is for Everyone” providing a platform to rightly tout our successes and serve as a regional engagement and attraction tool, we are well on our way to position Southwest Indiana as a premier region for people, jobs, and investment. I hope you will join us in 2019 and collaborate with the Chamber, the “E is for Everyone” initiative, or other community organizations and share your vision for the future of our region because “together we thrive!”

ach January, the Indiana General Assembly – the Legislature – convenes for a new Legislative Session. In odd numbered years like 2019, they craft a 2-year state budget during the process in addition to considering and passing more than 100 other individual bills that impact the daily lives of Hoosiers.

MILESTONES As we have been for so many years, your Southwest Indiana Chamber will be actively working inside the Statehouse and with our area legislators and other leaders to advocate for legislative initiatives that impact our member-businesses and the region. They convened early in January and hope to complete their work by April 26 (the Legislature is required to pass a budget and complete their work by midnight on April 29). Many of you have helped to shape our agenda for 2019 by completing the member survey earlier this fall or by participating in one of the Chamber’s many committees. We look forward to keeping you informed throughout the Session and getting you engaged with our legislators to ensure they understand how your businesses are impacted by their decisions. Based on member input, we have identified five leading priorities for the upcoming year. These include:

3 CHICKS FUDGERY 3 Chicks Fudgery celebrated a five-year anniversary and new location at 305 Main St. in Mt. REGIONAL CITIES 2.0: Support policies and projects that yield public and

private investment as a tactic to grow our available workforce by making our communities even more livable and attractive.

INFRASTRUCTURE: Support investments that enable the movement of people, products and information around our region; from expanded services at Evansville Regional Airport (EVV) to water and sewer piping to increased broadband capacity and all the investments that make the economy flow. The Glam Bar's goal is to provide a world-class experience for their customers and employees. Contact them at (812) 204-1736 or online at www.theglambar.com.

Some of these initiatives are familiar as we have seen significant progress on I-69 in recent years and continue to celebrate the projects made possible by the establishment of the Regional Cities program in 2015, including the improvement at Evansville Regional Airport. Now, we look to the future possibilities for each of these priorities. Our legislative activities kicked off December 6, 2018 with our Legislative Preview event and will continue throughout the Legislative Session. We have engaged former Chamber VP of Government Affairs, Sally Rideout of Rideout Public Affairs, Inc. to lead our legislative efforts and be our daily voice inside the Statehouse. THE

LIFESTYLE HEALTH

CHAMBER ASSOCIATION PROGRAM

The Southwest Indiana Chamber is pleased to introduce Lifestyle Health Plans as a unique health benefits program designed for Chamber members to address the underlying causes of the rise in healthcare costs - employee health behaviors. This program is made available through a partnership with NFP. WHAT MAKES LIFESTYLE HEALTH DIFFERENT? • Level-funded major medical plan designs • Underwritten by “A” rated carriers • Member savings averaging 5-15% in most cases • Integrated wellness incentives and cash-rewards • Up to a $500 deductible credit available to all wellness participants • Integrated concierge telemedicine, outpatient lab and diabetic supply benefits WHAT IS LEVEL FUNDED? Level-funded plans are essentially pre-packaged self-insured health plans, with low attachment stop-loss coverage. For many groups, level-funded plans reduce healthcare spend significantly versus a fully insured ACA small group plan. And because of their structure, levelfunded plans do not have the volatility in monthly cash flows, associated with self-insured plans, that can cripple a small business. HERE’S HOW A LEVEL-FUNDED PLAN WORKS: Level-funded plans are underwritten, health applications are required. For larger groups applications can be avoided if two years of claims history can be provided.

never replace hard work; it only supplements it. What has been one of the toughest challenges? One of our toughest challenges has been getting this wash up and running. As most West Siders will tell you, it has been a long time coming. Now that we are finally open, it is such a relief. What is your favorite thing about your work? Personally, speaking as a director of operations – coming into work every day and seeing the smiling faces that we employ as well as the smiling faces of those that use our services. The people within our organization are the ones who make this company so great. Coming to work is enjoyable and the environment is fun while we all have important jobs to do. What do you like most about the community in which you live? The Evansville Community is absolutely the best. We, as a business, love being locally owned and operated here in Evansville. If we had to narrow down what we like most it would be that everyone comes together when someone is in need. Businesses, citizens, and community leaders always lend a helping hand when needed. We love that about Evansville. Is there anything else you would like to share? We want to thank our loyal customers who have stayed with us as we continue to grow as a business here in Evansville. We could not do it without YOUR support! Thank you, Trenton Harker, director of operations, of Shine On Carwash West, for taking the time to share with us!
