President & CEO Letter

LET'S MOVE THE NEEDLE
im Clifton, the CEO of Gallup, regularly takes the pulse of the world’s 6 billion citizens in his work. That hasn’t always been the case. For decades Gallup was well-known as a U.S.-based company. How did Gallup become a worldwide organization? More customers. The guru of polling has long known "the secret to creating jobs is to create customers." America has about six million active businesses. A message from Ninety-nine percent of them are small businesses. TARA BARNEY The same is true of the Southwest Indiana Chamber; President & CEO we are an association of small and medium size businesses; we succeed when your businesses grow customers. And our region thrives as we create the economic energy that feeds existing companies and fosters start-ups. These past two months our region has rightfully enjoyed an injection of economic energy into our local economy we often overlook: graduation day. As thousands of area high school graduates join thousands of newly minted degree recipients from the University of Southern Indiana, the University of Evansville, Ivy Tech and others, the opportunity for our employers is huge. How well we as a region succeed in retaining this array of talent – future entrepreneurs, scientists, business people – matters. About 70% of these graduates will decide on their first job based on where they want to live. Yes, they want a good job and they look for those jobs in cool places. Winning their attention and interest is the highest priority of the Southwest Indiana Chamber. Where can the Chamber move the needle? With our partner WorkOne, we are piloting the “SITI Network” to convene manufacturing employers, academic institutions, non-profits and others to identify gaps in the path through high school to a good job. We are starting with manufacturers and expect to expand to other key industry sectors. We are encouraging businesses to welcome interns, apprentices and “work-experience” opportunities for students. The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation's Opt-IN program is an exciting example. The program connects students’ passion and interests with open positions in our community by focusing on both education and transferrable skills early in their high school careers. There is no better way for employers to identify and hire talent and for young talent to become career savvy. Our policy team is working with our legislators to reduce regulatory roadblocks that challenge small business growth and diversification. Remember, as small business earns customers, their growth requires jobs. We are championing Quality of Place investments that build our region’s brand and capture the interest of our new graduates as well as our residents and guests. Our success as a region is in our hands: The Southwest Indiana Chamber is your partner in creating economic energy and adding new customers for our businesses – small, medium and large – and for start-ups as well as longstanding existing companies. What’s our secret sauce? Our colleges and universities, our great K-12 options, and most importantly our graduates. Congratulations to the classes of 2018. We hope you find your dream career here in Southwest Indiana. Together we thrive!

Video Productions Let's welcome River City Video Productions as a new member to the Southwest Indiana Chamber. River City Video Productions is located in Evansville and can be reached at 812-604-1285 or email rivercityvid@gmail.com. Read on as Jake Hicks, owner/manager, describes what River City Video has to offer. Tell us about River City Video Productions and the services you offer. We offer several video products: Jake Hicks - owner/manager, Legacy Videos – a 30-minute River City Video Productions interview video with someone about their life with their pictures mixed in. Reply Videos – 15- to 30-second textable video for salespeople and marketers to text prospects and customers. Social Media Commercials – 2 to 10 minute promotional videos for businesses to use as advertising. Holiday Video Cards – 1-minute video in front of a green screen that allows people to give a personal message using their pictures or home video as a background. Presentation Videos – up to 10-minute presentation videos for people who understand the value of giving live presentations but do not want to speak live in front of people. Event Videos – from plays to weddings to important ball games. What inspires you to do this business? After producing “Test Drive Evansville” for a year, I decided that there was a market for affordable videos for the business community. Most video production companies want to charge an arm and a leg for a couple hours of work. My goal is to make videos affordable to the people on the front lines of business. What career advice would you give the younger generation interested in this type of work? Always try to think outside the box. Try to find a way to offer what no one else has thought of yet. In your opinion, what are three ingredients for success? Hard work, creative thinking and a good network What has been one of the toughest challenges? Getting the word out for products that people don’t realize are available. What is your favorite thing about your work? The look on a client's face when they see the finished product. The feeling of creating something unique just for them. What do you like most about the community in which you serve? There is not much I don’t love about our community. The Chamber has been one of my most important tools for many years. Most of my closest friends I met at Chamber events. Everyone is willing to help one another; there is a real feeling that we are all in this together. Thank you, Jake Hicks, owner/manager, of River City Video Productions, for taking the time to share with us!

oday’s young professionals are tomorrow’s leaders, and the Southwest Indiana Chamber has organized a group to help guide these YPs into the future. The Young Professionals Alliance engages, develops, connects and empowers young professionals to actively shape the future of Southwest Indiana. A 13-member executive committee works alongside Chamber team members to develop programs and events targeted to YPs in the region. Events provide unique opportunities for the region’s young professionals to meet new people, connect with like-minded peers outside the office, develop and enhance skills, and make a lasting impact on the future of our community. A “young professional” is generally identified as someone age 21-40 who is looking for ways to become successful in his or her chosen field, whether it be business, manufacturing, academia, nonprofit or any other endeavor. The Alliance was set up to help people in their 20s and 30s trying to work their way up in their chosen profession, said Young Professionals Alliance Director Abby Maravich. To help toward that mission, the YPA hosts lunch-and-learns, guest speakers and other social events. “The opportunities we are trying to present for our region’s young professionals include

networking, getting to know other people in the region.” – Ali Raben, Hafer PSC, YPA committee member
networking with senior executives, almost in a mentor capacity, and other important aspects in furthering their career such as building a better resume,” Maravich said. For instance, Maravich said during tax season, an accountant gave a presentation that, among other things, explained how to run TurboTax to the young professionals in attendance. At another event, a representative from a nonprofit talked about how to serve on a board for a nonprofit. Ali Raben, who leads the YPA executive committee’s marketing and communications efforts, said she attended one event where a financial planner talked about how to invest your money and starting to plan for your financial future at an early age. “The goal of these functions is to get young professionals engaging in activities that will help them in their professional lives and beyond,” Raben said. Raben said a mix of large corporations, small businesses and nonprofit organizations are involved with the Alliance, whether they help sponsor and direct an event, have employees serving on the executive committee or employ YPs who can benefit from the Alliance’s events. “The most important thing I get from the Alliance is networking, getting to know other people in the region,” Raben said. “It’s nice to form relationships with people from different companies while gaining a lot of knowledge in areas outside our own fields.” The Alliance in partnership with the Multicultural Professionals Network will hold its inaugural conference later this month. The YP Conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 20 in Carter Hall on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana. Some of the TriState’s best and brightest YPs will be in attendance for a powerful morning of professional and personal development, along with networking. The keynote speaker will be Denise Thomas, president and owner of The Effective Communication Coach, LLC (who can be found online at www.realcommcoach.com). Other business and personal topics to be discussed at the conference include management skills, branding, finding your strengths and much more. The conference will also include an amazing opportunity at the Executive Luncheon, where attendees are matched with many different executives for career and business mentoring and success stories. Sponsors include D-Patrick Motors, German American Bank, USI, Berry Global and 98.5 WEOA.
