on’t miss the 23-day series on “All Things Manufacturing” that will be posted on the Southwest Indiana Chamber website during the month of October at swinchamber.com. October is Manufacturing Month so the Chamber’s website and social media will feature stories of our manufacturers, vendors, logistics partners and all the complex A message from intertwined facets of our region’s economy BARNEY that make us a center of gravity in “making TARA President & CEO things.” Indiana is the most manufacturing dependent state in the nation, while Kentucky and Illinois are close behind. While 30 percent of Indiana’s workforce is making something, another 20 percent of Hoosiers are supporting manufacturing through suppliers, IT, catering, industrial supplies and the infrastructure and logistics that connect our manufactured products to OEM and the world. It’s big stuff! So the Southwest Indiana Chamber will highlight our manufacturers; some you know well, others are well-kept secrets. They do business here for good reason: our favorable business climate. By that I mean low taxes and operating costs; nimble regulations; great logistics and connectivity; and a productive workforce. Some are here because they always have been, others have chosen our region for huge capital investments. However, all count on the region to continue to offer a great business climate in which to do business, and they count on us to appreciate their investment in Southwest Indiana. Our manufacturers have challenges – we share them. We need world-class infrastructure to move goods. That’s why the I-69 bridge is our top priority. With it, we gain easy interstate movement and become the crossroads of North America. We have to get the opioid epidemic under control: 1 in 4 are failing drug tests, costing our manufacturers millions in productivity and depriving Hoosiers of great careers. And above all, we face constant competition for readily available talent as workforce shortages continue. We are a special region. The members of the Southwest Indiana Chamber are committed to our manufacturing economy and our organization’s priorities line up: growing and attracting talent, investing in key infrastructure projects and joining our partners to put opioid misuse in the past. Join me in supporting our manufacturers, our “makers,” and all of our businesses that contribute and make this amazing region prosper. Together we thrive.

Let's welcome ColorMax Signs & Graphics as a new member to the Southwest Indiana Chamber. ColorMax Signs & Graphics is located at 626 Court St. in Evansville and can be reached at 812477-3805 or online at www. colormaxdigital.com. Read on as Kerry Dubuque tells us about ColorMax Signs & Graphics!

Tell us about ColorMax Signs & Graphics and the services you offer. We pride ourselves on that we are a local family-owned business in the thriving downtown community. We have a great team with decades of experience, and I have been doing this for over 25 years. We offer everything from banners and our patented CrossOver Pole Banner System, like you see on Riverside and Main Street, to vehicle wraps including airplanes and hydroplanes, like you see at Shriners fest and HydroFest. We provide an unbelievable amount of products to our customers all over the world, most of which can be ordered on our website, www.colormaxdigital.com, but we love to talk to customers about all the custom things that we can do too. We have the ability to offer same-day service on many products and free delivery in the Evansville area, and we can also ship or install anywhere in the world. What inspires you to do this business? I love the variety of custom projects that I get to work on and the customer appreciation that we get the first time they see their project. What career advice would you give the younger generation interested in this type of work? Get as much hands-on experience as you can and love what you do. In your opinion, what are three ingredients for success? Hard work, commitment and passion. What is your favorite thing about your work? Meeting new people and helping them create their first logo or sign for their business, but I also get a thrill out of heights. What do you like most about the community in which you live? The people. I love the recent “e is for everyone” campaign and what it’s doing for our city and its residents. Is there anything else you would like to share? I would just like to thank all of our customers, and I look forward to working with them for years to come.

NATIONAL MANUFACTURING MONTH

T

he landscape of manufacturing today is much different than it was 20, 10, even five years ago, but it’s importance to our regional economy – not to mention our everyday lives – remains unchanged.

That’s why National Manufacturing Month, celebrated every October to recognize the impact of manufacturing in local and global economies, takes on a special meaning in Southwest Indiana. Regional manufacturers make up a sizable portion of the area workforce, producing and supplying a wide range of essential products to all points of the globe while utilizing the region’s highly trained and skilled labor force. The Southwest Indiana region for a long time has had strong ties to manufacturing, said Chris Brack, chairman of the Tri-State Manufacturers’ Alliance steering committee and president of George Koch Sons, LLC.

ZESTO ON FRANKLIN Zesto On Franklin celebrated an expansion at 102 W. Franklin St. in Evansville with a ribboncutting. Zesto On Franklin has expanded their hours to include breakfast. Contact them at 812-550-7110 or online at www.zestoonfranklin.com.

“From my conversations with the generation before mine, manufacturing was critical to the growth and prosperity of Evansville,” he said. “Today’s manufacturers must innovate to survive and need people skilled to handle the manufacturing process. Local educational institutions, along with organizations like WorkOne, are vital to the future of manufacturing in the Tri-State.” At least one event locally will commemorate National Manufacturing Month. Ivy Tech Community College will host a National Manufacturing Day event Oct. 5 at its campus on

changes due to the fast and continual evolution of technology. “Technology continues to move at breakneck speed,” said Brack. “I have been in the industry for 30 years now and can remember when the fax machine was ‘new’ technology. Since that time, we have seen the emergence of laptop computers to cell phones and now smartphones. At GKS, we have evolved from drafting on paper with pencil to Autocad 2D to now using 3D software used to develop and model systems prior to being manufactured.”

First Avenue. A presentation with several guest speakers, including Southwest Indiana Chamber President and CEO Tara Barney, will kick off the day. Tours of the labs and other parts of the school will be available for the general public. Dr. Michael Szakaly, dean of Ivy Tech’s School of Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering and Applied Technology, said the areas that will be open for tours include Advanced Automation and Robotics; Advanced Manufacturing; Pre-Engineering; Welding; Electric Line and Power Plant; Automotive; HVAC; and Machine Tooling. Barney said during October the Chamber’s website and social media platforms will showcase regional manufacturers, as well as their vendors and logistics partners. “We want to spotlight all the complex intertwined facets of our region’s economy that make us a center of gravity in ‘making things,’” Barney said. According to the website mfgday.com, the old stereotype of manufacturing jobs being low-paid and undesirable no longer exists. Manufacturers have the highest job tenure in the private sector, plus the annual average salary is more than $77,000 and nearly 90% of workers have medical benefits. Brack said the manufacturing field constantly

There are at least 20 businesses in the region classified as “manufacturers” that employ 100 or more workers, according to the most recent figures provided by the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana. The top 10 are Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (Gibson County, SUVs and vans, 5,400); Berry Global (Vanderburgh County, injection-molded plastics, 2,699 employees); Koch Enterprises, Inc. (Vanderburgh, industrial and auto parts manufacturing, 1,800); Alcoa Warrick Operations (Warrick County, aluminum sheet and ingot, 1,575); Sabic (Posey County, engineering thermoplastics, 1,100); Toyota Boshoku of Indiana (Gibson, automotive seating, 1,051); Mead Johnson Nutrition (Posey and Vanderburgh, pediatric nutrition, 900); AstraZeneca (Posey, pharmaceutical manufacturing, 680); Vuteq Corporation (Gibson, automotive interior parts, 632); and AmeriQual Group (Vanderburgh, meals ready-to-eat, 550). According to the EDC, many companies over the decades have decided to locate in Southwest Indiana primarily due to the region’s prime location: It is within a day’s drive of 75% of both U.S. and Canadian populations, according to the group’s website. Southwest Indiana is near all major freight outlets – major interstates, airports, rail lines and seaports – making it easy to ship goods throughout the country. Brack said area manufacturers not only have an impact globally, but locally as well. “Many products manufactured locally are used in the community,” he said. “From plastic cups to autos, all people in the community are directly impacted by manufacturing.”

THE

LIFESTYLE HEALTH

CHAMBER ASSOCIATION PROGRAM

The Southwest Indiana Chamber is pleased to introduce Lifestyle Health Plans as a unique health benefits program designed for Chamber members to address the underlying causes of the rise in healthcare costs - employee health behaviors. This program is made available through a partnership with NFP. WHAT MAKES LIFESTYLE HEALTH DIFFERENT? • Level-funded major medical plan designs • Underwritten by “A” rated carriers • Member savings averaging 5-15% in most cases • Integrated wellness incentives and cash-rewards • Up to a $500 deductible credit available to all wellness participants • Integrated concierge telemedicine, outpatient lab and diabetic supply benefits WHAT IS LEVEL FUNDED? Level-funded plans are essentially pre-packaged self-insured health plans, with low attachment stop-loss coverage. For many groups, level-funded plans reduce healthcare spend significantly versus a fully insured ACA small group plan. And because of their structure, levelfunded plans do not have the volatility in monthly cash flows, associated with self-insured plans, that can cripple a small business. HERE’S HOW A LEVEL-FUNDED PLAN WORKS: Level-funded plans are underwritten, health applications are required. For larger groups applications can be avoided if two years of claims history can be provided.
