I could not contain my excitement as we were about to tee off from the 1st tee at Club de Golf Valderrama, located in Andalucía, Spain. This was the beginning of a long awaited, and indeed, a well-deserved opportunity in becoming a reality. PATIENCE AND PERSISTENCE is much owed to the sport of golf. Being an amateur golfer has taught me to persevere. The accomplishment of one of the anticipated major goals was to take place sometime in 2011- ACHIEVING RECIPROCITY AND PARTNERING WITH THE TWO OF THE LEADING GOLFING COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD, SPAIN AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. It has now been confirmed that Swingtime will participate in reciprocation with 4 Amateur Golf Events in Spain, 2 Amateur Golf events in Switzerland and 2 Amateur Golf events in Orange County, USA during 2011. Swingtime adopted golfers will now be afforded the opportunity to train at the Core Academy programmes at Orange County National. Indeed, this will afford our young amateur golfers a priceless opportunity for their golfing future. I extend my gratitude to Louis Foong (Founder and CEO of The AlEA Group Canada), Tom Jackson, (Owner of Core Academy), Alan W Findlay (General Manager of ChampionsGate Golf),and Jim McCarthy (Director of My Florida International Realtors) for receiving and affording me your time. In the coming months Swingtime Golf will be in a position to participate in conjunction with academies in Europe, North America and Central America to enable our adopted golfers to prepare for the 2016 Olympics, thus affording them to participate in tournaments in various countries around the world. The exposure for Mauritius and the surrounding Indian Ocean islands will be vast and certainly open to other golfing destinations. Now that Swingtime Golf has paved the way for Mauritian Golfers, I urge and invite all our loyal sponsors in Mauritius, to continue to participate and support our young golfing amateurs. For the sponsors, Swingtime Golf provides not only traditional sponsorship opportunities, but also a variety of unique and creative sponsorship models. These models will provide market saturation never seen before in the industry. In fact, companies that have previously found branding opportunities through sponsorships can now affordably add their expertise and products to the international golfing arena. What makes Swingtime Golf exceptionally different is an integrated approach to preparing the players and sponsors for success, thus creating a win-win situation for everyone involved. To our readers, sponsors and the Swingtime team, let us continue to SWING! Alan Duval Publisher

his year, Mauritius saw the debut of its premier Golf League. With the collaboration of three top-drawer golf courses (Golf du Château, Tamarina and Le Touessrok), the Swingtime Golf League is a monthly golf tournament that has brought excitement and value to golfers of Mauritius as well as golf tourists. Swingtime Golf League presents the next step in golf competition on the island. Golf directors Steven Shearer (Golf du Château), Alain Lenoir (Tamarina) and Russell Hannah (Le Touessrok) enthusiastically joined hands with Swingtime as we continue to promote the sport of golf and address the need for a dynamic and forward thinking vision for golf in Mauritius, with sponsorship by Swingtime, Market Info Direct Mtius Ltd, Skyprops Finance, Air Mauritius, Heritage Resorts and Le Touessrok Hotel. Swingtime Golf League thus showcased three premier golf courses demonstrating what the fraternity of golf is all about and hosted an outstanding golf event, which provided challenge, fun and value at three venues of varying terrain and thrills. The league was played over six rounds with a minimum of three scores to count over the six competition rounds. Players and teams had to play at least one round at each course to be eligible for the grand prize. The cumulative total of your three best scores was a team’s final total. The format of play was ‘Better Ball Stableford’ and players had a full handicap. Green fee was MUR 1,900 per player, per round, at all venues and included breakfast (excluding drinks), Lunch (excluding drinks) and shared buggy.

Prizes were awarded after the last round for the following: 1st Nett, 2nd Nett and 3rd Nett. A new take-off Welcome to the second edition of Swingtime Golf Travel, which has been a labour of love for us all at Swingtime, especially for the leader of this team, Alan Duval. Getting this magazine done has been tough but as is always true with hard work, the reward is sweet. In fact, it literally puts me on top of the world to have the honour not only to head Swingtime- the Business of Golf but also Swingtime Golf Travel. Having worked on one golf magazine and one travel magazine before, I fully understand the highs and lows of such massive projects. But joining Swingtime and working on these two magazines has been a dream-come-true experience for me. To our readers, we vow to improve on the quality of the magazine with every issue. We promise to bring you exciting new destinations and a different angle on the tried and tested. Our current issue covers the globe like few travel magazines can. We begin our journey in picturesque Mauritius, move on to South Africa, rocket through to Spain, stopover in Switzerland and finish off in North America.

If you know of a golfing destination worth our time, do tell us about it and I’ll personally try and experience it to share with the rest of the world. I also look forward to your comments and suggestions as always. Please don’t hesitate to write to me. I’ll let you get on with this issue of Swingtime Golf Travel and look forward to hearing from you. Enjoy, Tj.

T

he Hotel is located on the scenic western coast of the island and fuses luxury and simplicity in a distinctive and authentically Mauritian way. In the midst of the Tamarina Golf Estate, privacy, tranquility and peace exude. With only fifty rooms, Tamarina Beach, Golf & Spa Club offers a warm and tranquil atmosphere with a unique all-inclusive golf or spa concept that not only provides value for money but also a superlative hotel experience. Here, one is invited to relax and soak up the spectacular setting between sea and heaven, play golf, indulge in the Spa, enjoy the beach and discover the beauty of the endemic flora and fauna in an unhurried fashion. The fifty rooms of Tamarina Beach, Golf and Spa offer luxury matched only in the heavens. The senses are

welcomed into a space that is simple and beautiful, sober and warm; where ochre and nuances of reds and browns, beige and red clay are heightened by black basalt stone. The ambience impersonates perfect harmony with the fabrics, stone floors, walls and furniture distilling into a vivid harmony, and highlighted by hints of African culture. Stylistically, the hotel steps boldly into the future whilst casting a knowing glance to its African roots and is thus the epitome of a very modern Afro-Mauritian chic. The rooms are spacious and tastefully adorned. If you’re traveling with children, it would be essential to understand that the hotel does not accommodate additional beds for children over 3 years old in the parents’ room but a cradle may be added for toddlers. Children’s rates and mini club are not available at the hotel. The element of nature is all encompassing and immersive and it is downright soothing to while away your free time in one of the four pools of the hotel, and enjoy the quietness of the surrounding nature graciously

captured in the gardens that embellish the local flora and saturate the entire space with the scent of frangipani trees alongside flashes of the beauty of red hibiscus flowers. An evening walk along the beautiful beach of Tamarin Bay is a highly recommended way to enjoy the tropical sunset unfettered by worldly distractions. Beyond the sheer bliss of relaxation there is much to do for the adventurous. Activities in your package include the 18 hole Championship golf course excluding the golf cart, 2 tennis courts during the day, entrance at Casela Park where you will see 1,500 birds, giant tortoises, lemurs and other animals, and myriad activities (with supplement) like booking a walk with the lions, an occasion offered to you in only two places on the planet. You must take the opportunity to discover the African side of Mauritius

by quad, buggy or the eco-friendly Segway and watch the zebras too. The view from above Casela offers you the fun trek Rando Fun with hanging bridges 60m high and the longest zip line in the Indian Ocean region. For something serene, you can enjoy the glass-bottom boat rides (upon reservation and weather permitting), a 45-minute sojourn at the spa for golfers and non-golfers. You may go dolphin watching, cruising in a catamaran or dive with the diving school team. There is a plethora of activities near the hotel that include (but may not be limited to when you book your stay here) a surf school, kayak hiring, big game fishing and horse riding. However, the fun and frolic will soon fire up your appetite. Part of your all-inclusive package is a choice between La Madrague, the main restaurant, La Plage, a small restaurant at the beach specializing in seafood, Le Dix-Neuf, the restaurant at the Club House on the golf course and Casela Restaurant at Casela Nature & Leisure Park (with a stunning view over the west coast of Mauritius). To quench your thirst, Le Bar is open all day as from 9 a.m. as you admire the stunning magnificence of the Tamarin Bay.

The spa has a dedicated area with four massage rooms, two double rooms; 3 will soon have their own terrace with showers and one will be equipped with a Japanese bath. To relax after a trek on Rempart Mountain, after a round of golf or simply for pure pleasure, the Spa offers a wide range of massages to keep you guessing. Exclusivity is not a luxury at the spa. For facial treatment, you have a selected range of products from Germaine de Cappuccini including the organic Naturé derived from the concentrates of white tea. The warm and welcoming spa team is well versed in individual cosmetic treatments so feel free to ask for their professional advice. The Spa is open every day from 9 a.m. till 8 p.m. and thus presents the ideal way to start or end your day. Sitting by the pool, overlooking the ocean, we sat down with Hotel

manager Dominique Autrey who gave us more insight into the concept of Hotel Tamarina. “It was important for us to set ourselves apart in a hospitality industry dominated by resorts here in Mauritius. Golf resorts are all in the 5 star category, we have created a distinctive exception by being the first hotel with 50 rooms to have a golf course in the 4 star sector. Our location- on Tamarina estate in Tamarina Bay next to Casela Nature Park- presents a wealth and variety of activities that are distinctly unique for a 4 star hotel in Mauritius. “The philosophy of the Hotel- ‘Simple, yet elegant‘ is evident throughout the guest’s experience. We endeavour to present the guest with an authentic Mauritian experience that is characterized by flavours and textures that delight and calm the senses from a modern décor that invites serenity and peace, a locale indicative of the spirit of a tropical island, replete with an intimacy, mystique and charm, to a Mauritian atmosphere proposed by our 100% warm, friendly and talented Mauritian staff groomed to serve the guest. “With our all inclusive package topped with excellent service we have something unique to offer both in terms of experience and creating everlasting memories.”

or centuries, Africa has held a special place in the hearts and imaginations of the world traveller. From the often fanciful reports of the great explorers to the enthused recollections of today’s holiday makers, the magical call of the dark continent is a promise of adventure and incredible memories.

Whilst accessible by road, a scenic two and a half hour drive from Johannesburg, the resort is also serviced by the world class Pilanesburg International Airport that regularly accommodates private business jets and charters. Inspired by a mythical African tribe that was lost to the pages of history, the Palace of the Lost City is an unmissable landmark that stands proud on the wild landscape. The architecture is uniquely opulent and reminds one more of a biblical monument than a hotel. Adorned with intricate frescos and mosaics, the Palace is as much a visual feast as the surrounding hills and valleys. The two championship golf courses are amongst the most challenging and scenic in the world. The Lost City Golf Course and Gary Player Golf Course were both designed by South Africa’s very own golfing legend- Gary Player. Famously known as the home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, the Gary Player Golf Course is an expertly designed, 18-hole course that offers players a true challenge all year round. Sharing a border with the Pilanesburg National Park, players are often treated to a rare glimpse of wild elephant, zebra and even rhino as they graze on the hills overlooking the fairways. Fast greens and devilish bunkers are sure to keep golfers of all levels coming back time and time again as they try to beat the course’s elusive par of 72. The Lost City Golf Course is certainly one of the most breathtaking and scenic courses in the world. A multi-themed design, the course offers golfers the chance to play in various genres within a single round, including deserts, mountains and parklands. The water hazards are cunningly placed to lure many a wayward drive and some even carry a more unconventional hazard - the 13th hole features a team of enormous Nile crocodiles sure to provoke a few yips around the green! All in all, this par-72 championship course is an absolute necessity for any golfer to add to his or her repertoire. For those traveling as a family, the resort offers an incredible selection of activities to keep visitors of all ages amused for days on end. A shuttle traveling from

Stopover at Valderrama

S

wingtime Golf Travel embarked on a Global Golf Tour playing golf all around the world. The first leg, Spain brought us to Club de Golf Valderrama, a destination which has seen the drama and gravitas of the beautiful game of golf unfurl on its greens by so many of Golf’s Greats.

Valderrama is located in Andalucía, the largest and southern-most region of Spain. A few miles north of Gibraltar, it is approximately two hours’ drive from Cádiz and one and a half hours from Malaga. The climate is ideal for year-round golf. The Par 71 Championship Course measures 6356 meters from the professional tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course- nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot. The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course architects, and was originally known as Sotogrande New. In 1981 its name was changed to Las Aves. Its incarnation in its present form began in 1984, when Jaime Ortiz-Patiño was able to acquire it from the developers who a few years earlier had laid out the very extensive Sotogrande area so imaginatively and tastefully. Ortiz-Patiño had been one of the first to build a house, and for some years he had nursed the secret ambition to bring Las Aves to a greater potential.

Ortiz-Patiño renamed the course Valderrama, after the ancient estate on which the land is situated. The pair shared a common aim: to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike, and would bring out the best golf that is in him. Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989. No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved such recognition. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 1996.In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director. ‘I found everything perfect,’ he said. ‘It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition. Valderrama is a private Members’ club, but a limited number of starting times are offered for visitors most days of the year. The reservations page provides further information. In 1984 he was able to acquire, along with the golf course, certain additional parcels of land that would allow this. Robert Trent Jones willingly agreed to come back and redesign his original layout of ten years earlier. Together the two men spent many hours walking around the course and discussing where and how improvements should be made.

Set in beautiful natural surroundings, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, where playing golf becomes a unique experience, Flamingos Golf Club offers an exquisite atmosphere, the most advanced facilities and a personalized service that allows you to enjoy and appreciate every little detail. The second leg of the Swingtime Golf Tour took us to the spectacular Flamingos Golf course. The Flamingos Golf Resort has a spotless reputation for its immaculately maintained golf courses and top class amenities. Los Flamingos is one of three golf courses at Costa del Sol in Malaga and opened for play in July 2001. It is the older of the Flamingos Courses and a preferred one for several golfers, with its challenging layout and hazards. Flamingos is a par 72, 18-hole course spanning 5,906 meters designed by renowned architect Antonio Garcia Garrido and is characterized by numerous trees such as orange, cypress, pine, olive, chestnut and carob. A lake has been formed due to the Arroyo del Taraje stream on the course. The course is located amongst the hills on the western side of San Pedro de Alcáara with an eye-catching panorama across the Costa del Sol, over the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar and Africa. The greens on the course are generously sized whilst its fairways are somewhat narrower on the front nine, where more precision playing is required than on the back nine. The bunkers are filled with white marmolina sand. The fairways are sown with Bermuda, except on certain holes where grass has been used, whilst the greens and tees have been sown with Pencross. You will need to be cautious of the tricky sand bunkers and tapered fairways. This course is well established and there are several professional golfers who enjoy playing here. The vegetation is not very old but a lot of care is taken to provide golfers with an environment full of diverse plantation. The ‘Arroyo del taraje’ stream flows through the course, testing your accuracy from the tee on holes 1, 4, 9 and 10. In addition to the stream, 3 lakes also come into play at holes 1, 10, 15, 16, 17 and 18. The vegetation has been thought about very carefully as different trees characterize each hole. After a satisfying game of golf you can enjoy the chic and sophisticated venue of the café-bar, clubhouse or enjoy your drinks on the terrace taking in the natural vista around it, or in the outstanding 5 star hotel, with a more breathtaking panorama. The complex incorporates one of the best hotels in Andalucía with exceptional cuisine.

Los Flamingos hosted the 2003 Senior PGA Matchplay Championships. There is no doubt that the course has been designed in perhaps the most spectacular enclaves of the Costa del Sol. It can be quite a test of accuracy for an experienced golfer as well as a beginner. There is also a short par 3 course on the practice range. Playing golf at Los Flamingos is a unique experience, with its lively ambiance, state-of-the-art facilities and personalized, professional service. In a short period of time, the Golf Club has already attained international repute. It is true that Los Flamingos is a taxing course with its tight fairways, but you are sure to enjoy the course maintained at the very highest level. The club is also a trendy venue for weddings with the classic Roman decor on the course as well as the hotel. De’ Medici Restaurant, a taste of Spain. De’ Medici Restaurant is named after and inspired by the famous family that profoundly influenced Florentine, Italian and European political, cultural and intellectual life for several centuries. As such, De’ Medici has become an institution in the Marbella area- and a reference point for quality Italian cuisine. Since 1990, Brigitte and Gianni Pigani have been highlighting the riches of the Florentine kitchen with a dedication to perfection that would have made the great Medici of the Renaissance proud. The private parking, beautiful dining terrace and quality food have made De’ Medici a favourite with many a regular customer and Gianni is always welcoming back familiar faces. Yet, even as he does so, he is firmly in command of his ship, making sure that everything is done to his exacting standards. Upon reviewing the menu, you will find two standout precursors to an excellent dining experience. Firstly the wide range of choices available to suit every taste and mood, and an introductory page that briefly recounts the story of the Medici and the philosophy behind the restaurant. The Medici are an inspiration to Gianni, for whom quality is a focal issue. De’ Medici has an extensive menu and all the food is cooked with the freshest ingredients and more importantly prepared right there and then. While this may take a little longer it results in very exceptional quality Italian food, and the dedication and commitment in preparing your meal is well worth the wait. The following presents but a glance into the allencompassing vision of De’ Medici’s epicurean flair. Be seduced by a deliciously smooth and creamy fresh goat’s cheese on herb salad and thinly sliced apple with a honey and balsamic vinegar sauce. Equally fresh and full of flavour, a razor thin carpaccio with rucola and shavings

of Parmesan cheese, topped off with a refreshing dash of lemon. Allow the house white, a Mantel Blanco Cosecha 2004 from Rueda, to accompany these Mediterranean delicacies beautifully, balancing floral tones with a crisp, dry finish. Your desire for something light on a warm evening can easily be accommodated and welcomed. Gianni will swiftly have his kitchen prepare your dishes to follow. The Sardinian speciality- fricassee of fish in a white wine sauce with fresh vegetables- is a summer delight being well prepared and not leaving you over satiated. As an evening of delicious dining with superb service unfurls, indulge in the magnificent choice of fresh delights available on the impressive dessert cart that will arrive to tempt a sweet morsel or two. D’ Medici is a popular venue with many a regular customers, it receives many English families who are staying in properties near the restaurant and certainly a restaurant to visit on your holiday should you wish to discover something special. Bad Ragaz Switzerland B

ad Ragaz in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley at the foot of the Pizol has a long tradition as a health spa. Today it is a wellness resort with top-class hotels, thermal baths and golf courses. The warm (37°C) healing waters bubble up from inside the mountain in the deep, mysterious Tamina Gorge in nearby Pfäfers.

below the Benedictine Monastery in Pfäfers. From 1840 the thermal water was piped down to the more easily accessible village of Ragaz, 4km away; so Ragaz quickly became a renowned health resort. Luxury hotels were built to accommodate wealthy travelers, including Russian nobility, and like the traditional Grand Hotel in Bad Ragaz, they still attract guests from all over the world. Today Bad Ragaz with its Tamina Thermal Spa, offers a broad range of medicinal and wellness packages.

From the middle of the 13th century, pilgrims journeyed to the Abbey of Pfäfers near Bad Ragaz, where the Tamina opens into the Rhine Valley to bathe in the thermal waters. In 1535 the doctor and philosopher, Paracelsus, became the first doctor in Bad Pfäfers to testify the healing powers of the thermal springs. Thus began the age of spa tourism.

What to do during winter The Pizol ski region stretches between 1600m and 2220m. Winter sports enthusiasts will find 12 railways and lifts, more than 40km of Piste- a free-ride paradise, a winter sports school, cross-country trails and interesting ski tour routes. Toboggan fans will rave about the 7 km toboggan run, and there are marked trails for snowshoe hikers. The attractive mountain footpath affords panoramic views.

There is a popular cycling and inline skating route on the nearby Rhine Dam and marked Nordic walking trails are also to be found on the Pizol. there is a May bear rambling through the alleyways. The boys of Ragaz band together to catch the beast and throw it into the gurgling Tamina brook, thus definitely ousting winter and celebrating the advancement of spring. The custom may also be interpreted as a fertility rite.

From Bad Ragaz there are rewarding excursions into Heidi country, to which Bad Ragaz belongs, to the nearby Principality of Liechtenstein, to Chur, the castle at Sargans, St. Gallen and Lake Constance.

Ancient Bad Pfäfers: beautiful walk from Bad Ragaz through the thermal ravine to Bad Pfäfers where kings and princesses once bathed, and where there are now two museums and a Paracelsus memorial.

If you visit Bad Ragaz on the first Sunday in May, you will be in for a surprise:

Must visit spots The natural spectacle of the Tamina Gorge: a wild, mysterious, narrow gorge near Pfäfers with cliffs up to 70 meters high, where the most prolific radioactive thermal water (pure, warm spring) in Europe gushes from a chamber deep in the mountain at 36.5°C.

Tamina Thermal Springs: the thermal spa centre near the Grand Hotel has two indoor pools and one open-air bath with whirlpool, water chute, waterfall, spa bath and spa grotto with massage jets.

Switzerland - An info snapshot

50

Switzerland An info snapshot Climate: Tends to be moderate for the most part but summers are known to be very hot and dry. Temperatures soar up to as high as 34°C and lakes in Switzerland tend to make it humid. The lower mountains around Lake Geneva can be a relief; so go up a couple thousand feet and enjoy cooler temperatures. Summer lasts from June to September. Winters are harsh as they bring snow, though they make the Alps a great place to ski with many outdoor sports in full swing from November to March. Culture: Switzerland showcases some of Europe’s most distinct cultures. To the northeast is the beer-drinking, sausageeating German-speaking Switzerland; to the south-west the wine drinking and shopping spills effortlessly into France; in the south-east the sun warms cappuccino sippers loitering in Italian-style plazas; and in the center: classic Swiss flugelhorns and mountain landscapes. Binding it all together is a distinct Swiss mentality. Language: Depending on where you are in the country the locals might speak Swiss-German (Schwyzerdütsch), French, Italian, or, in the hidden valleys of Graubünden, Romansch, an ancient language related to Latin. All four are considered official languages. Some cities such as Biel/Bienne and Fribourg are officially bilingual, English, German and French being the most widely spoken second languages. In any of the larger German-speaking cities you will have no trouble finding people who speak English. In the countryside, it is less common but hardly rare. Visa & entry requirements: Everyone needs a valid passport. Visas are required for a continuous stay of more than 3 months. This applies to citizens of the American Continent (except Belize, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Peru), Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Remember that Switzerland is not a member of the EU. Therefore, travelers entering Switzerland are subject to customs controls even if there are no immigration controls, and persons travelling elsewhere in the Schengen Area will also have to clear customs. Currency: Prices in Switzerland are in Swiss Francs (Schweizer Franken, francs suisses or franchi svizzeri). The most common abbreviation is Fr. but you may also see fr, sFr, Sfr, SF, FS or the official bank abbreviation CHF. Each franc is divided into 100 units called Rappen (Rp.) in German- speaking areas, centimes (c) in Francophone areas and centisimi (also c) in Italianspeaking areas. There are coins of 5 c, 10 c, 20 c, 50 c, Fr. 1, Fr. 2 and Fr. 5, and notes of Fr. 10, Fr. 20, Fr. 50, Fr. 100, Fr. 200 and Fr. 1000. However, many places such as supermarkets, restaurants, sightseeing’ box offices, hotels and railways or ticket machines accept Euro and will give you change in Swiss Francs or in Euro if they have it in cash. Price-labels usually contain prices both in Francs and Euros. Changing some money to Swiss Francs (CHF) is essential. Money can be exchanged at all train stations and most banks throughout the country.

Banking Hours: Banks are usually open Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and are closed on weekends and public holidays. Driving: To use the motorways (known as Autobahnen, Autoroutes, or Autostrade, depending on where you are), vehicles under 3500 kg weight need to buy a “Vignette”, a sticker which costs 40 CHF that allows you to use the motorway as much as you like for the entire year. Rentals will have the vignette paid for that vehicle, but ask. Speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h on normal roads and inside tunnels, and 50 km/h inside villages. Vehicles unable to travel at 80 km/h are not permitted on the motorways. Speed Fines are hefty and traffic rules are strictly enforced. If stopped by Police, expect to pay your fine on the spot. Train: Without a doubt, transport is fast and convenient. To make it cheaper, get hold of a Swiss Card, which will give you unlimited train travel, a free transfer from any Swiss airport or border town to any city or town in Switzerland

plus 1 free transfer from any Swiss city or town to any Swiss airport or border town plus 50% off all other rail, steamboat, bus and mountain excursions. Medical services: Free public medical facilities are widely available. Private clinics provide medical services for a fee. Electricity:: The standard current used in Switzerland is 230 volts (AC) 50 cycles. Power sockets are designed for 3 pin plugs. The Continental plug with 2 pins can easily be used. All Hotels have adaptor plugs so guests can use their electrical appliances. Health: Generally there is no problem with food and water in Switzerland. Restaurants are controlled by strict rules. Water is drinkable everywhere, even out of public fountains unless specially marked. There are many organic food stores and restaurants and it’s currently illegal to sell any genetically modified food. Shopping: Swiss employment law bans working on Sundays, so shops stay closed. An exception is selected businesses in railway stations.

Switzerland - An info snapshot

Credit Cards: Switzerland is more cash-oriented than most other European countries. It is not unusual to see bills being paid in cash, even Fr. 200 and Fr. 1000 notes. Some establishments do not accept credit cards; so check first. For credit card payments, carefully review the information printed on the receipt (details on this can be found in the “Stay Safe” section below). All ATMs accept foreign cards. Therefore, getting cash should not be a problem.

EElsewhere, give bathroom attendants 1 SF and hotel maids 2 SF. Theater and opera-house ushers get 2 SF. m Hotel porters and doormen should get about 2 SF per H bag in an upscale hotel, 1 SF elsewhere. Airport porters b 5 SF per bag. rreceive e Cuisine: C LLike the languages spoken here, Swiss food is strikingly diverse and rich with flavour. Most local delicacies are d in dairy products- cheese, milk, cream and butter rrooted o being the main ingredients. Vegetarian options are far b aand few. Vegans need to inquire about the veg recipes tthat h they find- the tomato soup can have bacon and fresh salads can be layered with salami. There are also Turkish, Arabic and East Asian eateries and of course the much renowned quality gourmet international cooking in Geneva, Zurich and Bern. Swiss cafés open at breakfast time and often sell alcohol too. They might also be called bars although the latter tend to open their doors for late afternoon and evening business. Places for tea and cakes are known as ‘Tearooms’. Both tea and coffee come in myriad styles some local and others international.

Orlando,Orlando

For the vacation of a lifetime Who said dreams don’t come true? Well, if you ever believed that cliché, it’s time to wake up, pack up and take off to the destination everyone’s talking about- Orlando (Florida), the heartbeat of the northern hemisphere. So, where do you begin? Simple, begin by going on-line and searching for an itinerary planner if you don’t already have family or friends there. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of tour operators, travel agents and itinerary planners available at your fingertips 24/7. Let’s imagine that you’re going to plan your own itinerary. Let us help you build your itinerary. So, the first step on your journey is to decide how many days you wish to

party. Once you’ve decided on that get your pen and paper (slash tablet PC slash MS Excel slash MS Word slash PDA slash one of a dozen other technologies.) Personally, I prefer to be immaculately organised so I’d draw a table with columns for mornings, afternoons and evenings for each day of my trip. Therefore, if I were going away for 10 days, I’d have ten boxes containing three columns each where I’d fill in my plans. Next- book tickets, car rentals There’s really no rocket science to booking tickets and wheels. All you have to do is pick up the phone and dial a few numbers or shoot out a few email enquiries and the rest will be taken care of by one of many businesses competing for your dollars. And of course, if one doesn’t work out, you’ll always have ready options. Choosing the perfect fit for your needs can be challenge. Once again, there’s an infinite number of people willing to help you out every step of the way for negligible fee. I would highly recommend finding a professional service, especially if you’re a first-timer.

There are many other popular public beaches just an hour or two away from any point in the city. The west coast favourites include St Pete Beach, Clearwater and Tarpon Springs.

When considering the hotel, do remember to explore their restaurants and menus so that you’re not disappointed after your vacation kicks off. As with airline booking, always inform the establishment you’re staying at about any special needs and medical conditions you or those travelling with you may have. This simple, common sense step will help them provide better service and save you a headache or two in a foreign land, where such headaches can make a serious dent in your wallet. Sightseeing & daytime partying Some of the action attractions in Orlando include the Kennedy Space Centre Visitors’ Complex. The exciting venue is easily accessible by car if you’re driving or you can choose one of numerous shuttle services that make the trip during the day. This one should be a great learning experience for the little ones and a welcome break for parents wishing to spend some quality time with their kids. Orlando also offers theme parks like very few cities around the world. Visits to the city cannot possibly be complete without a crazy day at one of many theme parks, the best of which is without doubt Disney World. Then, when the child inside you craves for more, go to Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld. Both are highly recommended. Cocoa Beach, Canaveral National Seashore and Daytona Beach are the hotspots in the city. As usual, you can drive with the top down or in an air conditioned car or take the hotel’s transportation if you’re not confident driving on that side of the road.

When you’ve had enough of beaching and still have an appetite for water, the options at waterparks are incredible. Wet ‘n Wild, Aquatica, SeaWorld’s Waterpark, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Blizzard Beach are very popular with visitors. And the best part is that these waterparks are open all year round thanks to the sunshine. The choice of restaurants and eateries is simply mind-boggling, and since we can only afford limited space in this article, I’m going to side step this one and let you make your own choices. Personally, I prefer cuisines from South East Asia, especially Pakistani food, which is rarely found easily. But then again, if I was on vacation, I’d spoil myself rotten with burgers, fries, pizzas, tacos and all things that define American eating. As they say, when on Planet US, do as the Americans do! Choosing the right hotel This is one of the most important, make or break factors of any trip away from home. A great experience is what you’re paying for, dreaming of and expecting, and you have every right to do so. However, not everyone stays at fivestar hotels and even those that do occasionally have an experience worth forgetting quickly. There’s no counting the number of dreams that have turned into nightmares and these are generally unavoidable in any part of the world at any given time. However, more often than not, we do make the right choices or compromise just a bit and live with the choices we have made. Flexibility is key, remember!

If you are a perfectionist and prefer doing everything with your own hands, there are many short-term rental options. You can find 1 bedroom to 5 bedroom villas scattered all over the city. In addition to giving you a more homely feeling, these are lighter on your pocket and provide great services. People who enjoy nature and love the outdoors can also camp a few nights. The health benefits and adventure is something I will not attempt to put into words. And as far as your budget goes, it couldn’t possibly get better than this! Transportation options are as varied as your choices in all other areas of life. The factors are two- what you’re willing to spend and the way you enjoy travelling. I love travelling in buses not only because it’s therapeutic for me but also because it’s a sightseeing opportunity. Take your pick and enjoy, or perhaps try everything you can! Start discovering Orlando right now Of course, the most convenient onestop place for global exploration today has to be the comfort of your armchair, if that’s what you use to surf the worldwide web. No vacation could go full circle without shopping and enjoying the nightlife. Once again, from the upscale to the down-and-dirty, your options are as infinite as the stars in that diamondstudded Orlando sky. On your next trip to Orlando, there’s just one point to remember- no holds barred!

United States - Orlando

When you’re away from home, it’s better to be down-to-earth and expect a few hiccups regardless of all other factors. Like a good boy/girl, if you laughed at the unexpected trashtasting taco or under-par service and forgave the erroneous human beings that caused the chaos, you will walk away with a great memory. Losing your temper will only make the bad worse.

Travel Tips - Tips on booking Tee Times Maximizing a golf holiday in an exotic destination with the pick of amazing courses to play can certainly be achieved if you keep in mind the following: Preference to Resort Guests When booking tee times, be aware that many resort courses give preference, or even exclusive access, to resort guests. This may affect your accommodation plans, since you may decide it’s worth staying at the resort to play a particular course, or courses.

Course(s) First, Accommodations Second As a general rule, resorts and especially those with quality golf courses are expensive. But if golf is a highlight of your trip, decide where you want to play first, and then decide on accommodations. A good idea is to stay at a hotel to gain access to a course or courses and then move to a less expensive hotel a day or two later. It is an inconvenience to have to repack and move during the trip, but can be well worth it in order to play top courses while not spending the entire vacation at expensive resort prices.

Book Tee Times As Far Ahead As Possible Even if you are staying at a resort hotel, which gives you access to its courses, find out how far ahead of your arrival date you should book tee times. All courses have specific rules for when they will make tee times, which you should take note of and follow carefully. Some courses even have specific times you must call to reserve your time (e.g., between 7 and 9 a.m. on the Thursday eight days before the weekend you wish to play), though most guidelines are usually more general (e.g., a week before you wish to play or up to sixty days ahead). Book as far ahead as possible, especially for high demand courses. Even as a resort guest, if the course is popular, you may be out of luck if you wait until a few days before arrival or check-in time to get a tee time.

Tee Times for Singles Tee times for singles are generally somewhat easier to get than those for two or more players, since many courses will work singles in with parties of fewer than four golfers. A few places will actually give singles a set tee time– you can be told when to arrive but not exactly when you’ll go out (though it usually doesn’t take too long to get worked in). This means, too, that you may find a single added to your party on occasion when you play a popular course.

Booking Winter Tee Times During the winter months (which mean shorter days), keep in mind that it’s tough to get tee times after 1p.m. since courses want players to allow plenty of time to play through before dark. The shortened days mean fewer available tee times, even in the relatively warmer climes, so remember to plan ahead. of

agebrush is an exceptional destination where something special occurs for every golfer lucky enough to have the privilege of playing a round here. At the helm is an exceptional gentleman leading the way in ensuring an extraordinary golf moment is had. Swingtime Golf Travel was fortunate to have Richard Zokol share with us the extraordinary journey of his career in golf and a new concept in the golf experience. “I was introduced to the game of golf by my father, Joseph, who immigrated to Canada from Slovenia as a young boy and grew up in a tough neighborhood in Vancouver, BC. After WWII my father went to Dental School and learned to play golf. As a young boy I was connected to my father’s passion for the game and when he asked me to caddie for him at about age 10, I fell in love with the game.

Value your journey

“We lived across the street from the Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver and I became a member in 1970, when I was 12-years old. In an effort to make some pocket money, I started to caddie every weekend for a member of the MDGC. “At 15, I played and excelled in soccer, baseball as well as golf. At the same time I was asked to caddie in a tournament by a local professional Jack Westover, who later became my first golf instructor. After that day, I never played baseball. “Stan Leonard also asked me to caddie for him in a few Canadian Tour events. Stan is a Canadian Hall of Fame professional who won a few time on the PGA Tour and contended and almost won the Masters on a couple occasions. “I am most proud of being a ‘walk on’ to Brigham Young University’s Golf Team in 1977 (a ‘walk on’ is a player given an opportunity to try and make the team and who has not been specifically recruited to play on the team). In my 4th and final year at BYU I was the Captain of BYU’s golf team and we won the NCAA Team Championship at Stanford University in 1981.

“Later in the summer of 1981, I won the Canadian Amateur Championship. In the fall of 1981, I entered the PGA Tour’s Qualifying School and earned my PGA Tour card for 1982 and began playing on the PGA Tour. I won two events on the PGA Tour in 1992 the Greater Milwaukee Open and the Deposit Guarantee Classic. “I believe that golf is a wonderful metaphor of life. Players learn about themselves and improve if they are truly open-minded. The golf course is also the best place to learn about others and conducting interviews. It shows you how other people deal with both adversity and success in practice. “It forces people to make decisions in every kind of situation and inevitably shapes who they become in life. Like golf, in life you need to play the ball as it lies and the course as you found it. “In 1982, on the PGA Tour, in an effort to quiet my hyperactive logical mind in competition, I began to listen to music using a Sony Walkman. The PGA Tour had to call the USGA to see if this was permitted under the rules of golf after I shot an opening round of 65 and held the lead of the 1982 Greater Milwaukee Open. “Because this was such a radical action the media labeled me “Disco Dick”. At that moment it became very clear that psychology of golf is likely far more important in the game than the leading experts think it is. From that point, I became a student of the psychology of golf as a professional player and am currently writing a book on the matter. “There is a significant difference in playing golf for pleasure and playing golf for a living. When you play golf for a living, I choose to not play golf for pure enjoyment. In fact, I find nothing pleasurable at all in playing leisure golf. Professional golfers become addicted to competition like a drug. Succeeding under pressure is very exhilarating and addictive and once you get used to playing at that level simply playing golf isn’t as appealing. “As an example, I went to the 2008 Masters as part of the Royal Canadian Golf Association. I had not been to Augusta National since I played in the Masters in 1993. I couldn’t stand being a spectator. I had no interest in watching the Masters from the sidelines. “I believe that the essence of the game in North America has not been effectively protected over the past 3 decades. The North American culture has developed an ‘overindulgent entitlement’ in the game that has pulled the game away from its core values. “Sagebrush was designed after watching the tremendous impact and industry trend to move toward courses like Sand Hills in Nebraska; Bandon Dunes in

setting shop in emerging markets in Asia like China, Vietnam and India. The North American golf model will need to be restructured. Golf course designers like Coore & Crenshaw, Tom Doak, Gill Hanse and Rod Whitman will continue to make positive impact in the industry and be the new benchmark.

“Sagebrush was created to provide a ‘value innovation’ in both golf and real estate. It is absolutely unique with only 37 estate lots on the 400 acres. Our estate lots range up to 6 acres in size in a 400 acres property and our whole development sits inside a 100,000-acre historic cattle ranch with a remarkable lake view.

“Sagebrush is very proud to have been awarded the 2009 Best New Course in Canada by Golf Digest in the US and SCOREgolf in Canada. “I believe that big budget, big brand golf course design and development have left North America and are

Nic Huddy- Media Manager Nic is pure joy personified. There’s never a dull moment when this entertainer, bush pilot, musician, videographer, theatre producer and writer is around. Nic effortlessly radiates his positive energy and gusto for life, helping everyone along the way. The Zim from SA has been in Mauritius for the last 3 years but rarely spends an entire month on the island as his work takes him across continents, which also puts him in the enviable position to play golf around the world. Little wonder his game has been making quantum leaps recently. Nic is most excited about taking the Swingtime media spread into new media such as podcasts, live streaming, e-book integration with some of the biggest names in the industry, etc.

Luke Clement Born in Belfast, Maine, Luke’s parents decided to head down to Orlando when he was about 8 months old. He was a bar manager and life insurance salesman before joining Swingtime. His passion is to sell and believes that if the product one’s selling is the best on the market, the rest falls into place. Luke was keen to join Swingtime after seeing the passion that the company has for helping people and developing the sport of golf as well as showing people how to have a good time! His aim is to help Swingtime set up a base shop in Orlando, then expand into the rest of Florida and after that, start on the rest of the States! Luke finds golfing very therapeutic and a great opportunity to network on the course and get his name out.

Reuben Cruz This New Yorker moved from Brooklyn to Orlando at the age of eight. When he experienced the fun in the sun he fell in love with the place. “New York was pretty sheltered and I never really got out much, so coming to Florida and being able to get into the woods, get dirty and get into trouble was a great change!” He’s loves playing pranks. He fell in love with the Golf Travel Magazine after he met Alan and just knew he had to be a part of it. He doesn’t believe that opportunity comes knocking but this kind of fell from the sky right into his lap! Reuben believes that the opportunities in Florida are huge and he’s a very ambitious person. There are 52 states in the US, so the opportunity for expansion is incredible. He looks forward to being with Swingtime for many years! ub Re

He has done everything from writing music to acting. “I love sports, so I skate, snowboard, play basketball and soccer. I’m a thrill seeker too; so anything that gets the blood pumping! I’ve always wanted to go diving with a Great White, so let’s see how that goes!”

Jose De Leon “I moved from New Jersey to Florida in 2002. My parents didn’t feel very comfortable in the north after 9/11, so my parents, brother and sister all came down to Orlando and set up shop here. “I was working in the residential real estate industry in Orlando handling everything from investments, services, relocations, renovations- the works! I started working straight out of High School. I got my real estate license as soon as I turned 18. My parents showed me the path and I didn’t look back. I always think big but take things one step at a time. Florida has a lot of potential and I’d like to get the most out of being here. “My Filipino friends introduced me to golf a few years ago so I started taking lessons and playing a few courses. Real estate also comes hand-in-hand with golf. You start a lot of deals on the course, networking and having a bit of fun. I don’t consider myself a good golfer and I’ll take advice from anybody who can help me out! “I’d love to play with a few CEOs of the top companies, just to be able to talk business with them and try and get inside their heads. I follow Formula 1 very closely! I went to watch the Grand Prix in Montreal, Canada, a couple of years ago and it was the best time of my life!”

Swingtime 2011 77 Switzerland - Swingtime Corporate Challenge 2011

T

he countdown has begun. Swingtime Corporate Challenge 2011 is a matter of days away and our Agent in Europe, Franco Cavegn, is leaving nothing to chance. With 16 years as a top-flight skiing professional, Franco represented his country in three Winter Olympics, seven Alpine World Ski Championships and several downhill World Cups. He made the cover of Swingtime’s 13 th issue.

Presently, Franky is working on two prestigious fronts, Franco Cavegn Events and Swingtime Switzerland. The former organizes skiing events around the world while the latter keeps him engaged with the promotion of golf. As always, he is associated with mega brands only. “This year”, he explains, “I have organized and managed 23 golf events for Birdie Open in Switzerland. Here I learnt a lot more about golf. Top of my priority list for Swingtime Switzerland, and Europe, is the third Swingtime Corporate Golf Challenge 2011 on September 15th in GamsWerdenberg. This will be a huge triumph I’m sure.” The success of this tournament will serve as a stepping-stone for the flourishing followup events for years to come. He is also optimistic of taking Swingtime Corporate Challenge to each European country soon. Another idea Franco is pursuing keenly is a combo event – Golf and Ski – in Zermatt. He has already firmed his footing in the region and is working industriously to make things happen there. Swingtime Corporate Golf Challenge will be a memorable event. See you all there!
