…and so it is with the wonderful game of golf.

This magazine is the pinnacle of achievements by Swingtime in the last 2 years. The Swingtime Golf Travel magazine will showcase to you the world. Many of the destinations featured in this issue I myself have travelled to, embarking on my own voyages of discovery. I can well vouch that each has been as individual and charismatic in their own right, weaving its special magic over my senses, and are still fondly recalled to this day. To have played golf in these countries has been an experience and journey of its own. From the UK to Spain to South Africa, Switzerland and Mauritius, each golf course was a challenge and a delight and for the golf traveller, places you without a doubt simply must visit. From my own travels upon my return people always ask, “How was the food?” and this too is also an integral part of one’s journey, so intimately wrapped up in your memories. Swingtime Golf Travel will not only introduce to you the best places to visit but also the very best in dining and restaurants. “Die Fischerzunft” by Andre Jeager and “Strauss” by Roland Häusermann in Switzerland have become firm favourites of Swingtime Golf Travel. To truly understand a city and its people is to delve into its culture and heritage. Walking the streets of St. Petersberg in Russia was like living through a dream surrounded by the splendour of breathtaking art and architecture. Sometimes a visit is not enough, and a destination must become a part of you. We shall endeavour to bring you interesting and exciting property and investment opportunities that will capture not only your desire for travel, but your imagination as well. Our regular features will bring you helpful and useful travel advice. In this issue we talk the practicalities of golf travel bags and Golf Travel Insurance, both one simply should not overlook on your journey to your dream golf holiday. We hope that our magazine will be enthusiastically embraced by golfers, holiday makers, families and everyone who has yearned to see the world. My deepest thanks go to the Swingtime Golf Travel Team, who laboured to realize my vision. To our readers, keep a look out for the Swingtime Golf Travel Team, visiting your corner of the globe.

Publisher’s letter

Welcome readers to the debut issue of “Swingtime Golf Travel”, a unique golf travel magazine that takes you with one swing on a journey to the world. This publication is very dear to my heart in that it is a combination of two of my great passions: Golf and Travel. Both have afforded me the uncountable blessings of seeing and discovering the world, and in so doing meeting the most amazing people with many who have become friends. Just on a recent trip from Singapore (where I experienced the F1 night race, a thrilling event) I happen to be seated next to Miss Russia and her agent, 2 very fascinating individuals who too have travelled widely. The immeasurable gift of travelling is that you never know whom you will meet on your journey and so it has been with Swingtime.

7

Years later I would have that same thought on a road trip through the Karoo with my best mate, only we added a good bottle of wine to the list. Our retinue of jokes, not that funny, would have us laughing for kilometres and hours on roads that seemed to stretch on forever. The sky is different there, an otherworldly blue, deeper and vital. As dusk would fall adding even more gravitas to a landscape that settles its easy silence onto shoulders, I would get that tingly feeling again as we pulled into a little town for the night. Hmmm…somewhere new. I have to say that I love it all. In the car, on a plane, by boat or train, going somewhere new is a moment of exhilaration multiplied on each other. I am enthralled by the very process of soaking up the essence of a place. Buildings, roads, new skies, oceans strange and familiar, tapestries of culture, and languages that tease with my lack of understanding, coy with the depth that the words hold, to new tastes and flavours locked into the personality of who a country or town is. I can never have enough. I have discovered that for those who play golf, travelling or going on holiday is an all together enhanced experience. It would seem that the best parts of the world are reserved for golfers. There is a drama and fierce joy of playing golf in the Swiss highlands, in the South African desert like region, along a Mediterranean coast in Spain or in an English country side. They are so different. I have seen golfers who are about to go on vacation close their eyes in breaths of anticipation. I recognize that moment. I have it every day. Somewhere out there is a place I have not yet been to and I’ll be sure to have a towel, a book, good company, a bottle of wine and a set of golf clubs! With a lust for travel Rob Greeff The Editor

T

hey say those born under the sign of Sagittarius (which I am) have a “lust for travel”. It makes me chuckle that “going anywhere new” has me positively tingling at the thought. I’m not sure if this th his is motivation was born out of a simple day out to the beach with my ffamily fa fami ami mi as a kid, filled to bursting with adventure and fun. My dad would have ha vee us in howling with laughter at jokes that weren’t really that funny, mom would hand out snacks along the way and the world would fly by in dizzying shapes and colours to the sounds of “cool jazz” emanating from the radio. I was having fun before I had even arrived. Standing on the shore as the salty ocean tickled my feet and trying to imagine what lay on the other side of the big blue; I decided at the age of 8, that a towel, a book and good company was all that one ever needed when you were going anywhere.

The Springs Hotel and Golf Club

THE SPRINGS Hotel and Golf Club N

estled deep within the Oxfordshire countryside and bordered by the banks of the River Thames, lies the Springs Hotel and Golf Course. Constructed in 1874, and named after the spring fed lake it overlooks, the Springs Hotel is a charming example of a Victorian Tudor-styled country house imbued with and retaining all the traditional values associated with the great Country Houses of England. In the oak panelled reception halls you will find crackling log fires in open hearths and beckoning comfortable upholstered chairs creating a uniquely English atmosphere.

Whilst enjoying a peaceful rural setting, The Springs is conveniently situated for sightseeing with excellent road and rail links giving easy accessibility to key tourist attractions; the Capital city of London with Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament is within 35 mins reach, Oxford with its world renowned University colleges and Thames punt trips is 15 mins away, Windsor with the Royal Castle and changing of the guard is within 40 mins, the picturesque town of Henley on Thames famed for the Royal Regatta is within 15 mins reach, to name but a few. Stately home tours, river cruises, wine tasting at the nearby vineyard and historical walk along the ancient Ridgeway path can all be arranged with ease. The hotel has a fascinating history which mantles it an indelible allure. It was once owned by the international pop star Ian Gillian of the rock band Deep Purple who eccentrically installed the distinctive guitar shaped pool. In addition, the hotel is said to be haunted by the famous English contralto Dame Clara Butt, who lived in the local village of North Stoke. In honour of her ghost, a room in the hotel is named after the opera singer.

9 The Springs Hotel and Golf Club Hospitality

The hotel has 32 well-equipped en-suite bedrooms, all of which are double or twin. Many have balconies with exceptional views of the spring-fed lake. Dining at the Springs is an epicurean delight, where cuisine of the finest quality can be enjoyed in the AA Rosette Lakeside Restaurant, a captivating venue with views of swans gliding majestically on the lake in the most mesmerising light so very indicative of the magic of the countryside. For less formal gatherings the Golf clubhouse provides a relaxed atmosphere and incorporates an extensive and varied menu. The elegant function rooms including the oak-panelled Lord Nelson Suite and Green Suite lend themselves to more private celebrations. They are ideally located adjacent to the Lakeside Restaurant and have spectacular views of the well-kept gardens, swimming pool and the spring-fed lake. The hotel offers wedding, banqueting and conference facilities, with various options available at the Hotel itself or alternatively in the Golf Clubhouse. The Springs specializes in corporate events where unobtrusive service and attention to detail are prerequisites for successful meetings, and encompass a selection of services tailored to meet exact requirements applicable to conferences, training days and business dinners. The conference room and meeting space can accommodate groups of all sizes and can seat from 20 to 150 in comfort. The location of the hotel with accessibility to the M4 and M40 motorways, in conjunction with the serene rural environment creates the ideal setting conducive to important discussions away from the distractions of a busy office.

11 Strauss Hospitality

T

he world of contemporary lifestyle, design and cuisine all comes together in the heart of the charming town of Winterthur in Zurich Switzerland. Strauss, by restaurateur and chef Roland Häusermann, takes modern dining to new heights with innovation, passion and a deft attention to detail. Strauss is a serendipitous find. Swingtime Golf Travel made its way along a cobbled street walkway past boutiques and sidewalk cafes to discover something all together new, exciting and confirming the cutting edge of culinary urbanity, set amongst enchanting buildings that showcase the very best old world Swiss architecture.

by Rob Greeff

With the first step into the establishment, it is very clear that Strauss is not just about having a good meal, but rather noticeably creates an “experience”. This multifaceted venue taps directly into the modern diner’s lifestyle from grabbing a quick snack, enjoying a cocktail or glass of wine, relishing some fine dining, to a leisurely lunch in the courtyard garden. Every space has been designed to enhance the sociability that surrounds good food and imbue the meal with a definitive character of its own. These meeting and eating spaces, nuanced by their very own ambiance and design are however very much part of a philosophical whole. Roland Häusermann refers to Strauss as being cheeky, cheerful, contemporary and multicultural, with tradition at its finest employing only the freshest ingredients and at all times being courageous and daring. The tongue in cheek humour elicits a grin on my part as I am shown the “Pool-Bar”, a visually striking space in the front entrance

of the restaurant. Engaging the fine weather is an alfresco dining venue peppered with very modern black rattan furniture and bold white table linen. The afternoon light catches the glass and silverware laid on tables and reflects the green manicured potted shrubs. It is an airy and sleek space, and a firm favourite with those of a stylish persuasion in Winterthur. The bar inside presents the perfect gathering space for a drink or light meal. The interior décor is design heaven, a seamless profusion of minimal cubist bar furniture finished with steel and dashes of industrial orange leather in high contrast with glossy black lamp shades suspended from the ceiling. Black and white vintage posters of jazz greats hang on the egg shell walls in homage and acknowledgement of the lively music evenings hosted here. The piano in the in the corner is very often the focus of performers and musicians and entertainment at Strauss has garnered quite the following. An impressive wine display becomes an art installation behind the marble bar counter. A dramatic relief wall with a minimalist steel fixture showcases a international wine list with vintages form all major wine regions ranging from the inexpensive to the exclusive, and creates a daring contrast with the rest of the space. It must be said that although trend setting, the bar is very welcoming and exudes warmth and personality. I particularly enjoyed the “live-camera” feed into the kitchen. Coming into Strauss just for a drink is impossible with the mouth-watering food being

prepared. I loved how the senses are fully engaged. Strauss creates a banquet of sight, sound and taste. Leading off from the bar is an intimate little Bistro area. Again, a very stylised space evoking the cutting edge in Asian and Italian design with a definitive Swiss approach. It is comfortable and modern and plays with light. A mirrored wall makes the space go on forever and the huge bay windows are changing panoramas alive with the essence of Winterthur. The Bistro is a continuation of the bar, and transition from one area to other is well thought out as an evening out comes to fruition with a meal. It is summer in Switzerland, and everyone is taking full advantage of the fantastic weather, the pull of laughter brings me to the “garden”. Everywhere is smiling faces, fresh salads and pastas and the flow of chilled wine. The garden is the venue of choice today for families and friends. It is Zen, chic, comfortable and easy going. I sat down with some

13 Strauss Hospitality

regular diners and spoke to them about Strauss. All heaped praise for the food, wine, excellent service, the ambiance and very importantly, the attention to detail. “We always feel at home here”, “It is always a wonderful experience”; “Quality and authenticity in abundance” are just a few of the descriptions they happily volunteered. It certainly is a place to while away an afternoon. Brigitte Häusermann, Roland’s wife shows me to the dining room. On our way we pass the boutique on site. Her sense of style and taste is evident, and all the little details positioned p all over Strauss come into full focus. Her design touch and flair is keenly evident throughout. “Here Here in the boutique we sell things that I love love, a things that are beautiful and express ex love for art and craftsmanship. anship Many guests often enquire ire where we source our décor or objects ects de art and so we created this littlee studio stu boutique. Our guests get to take home a little Pieces bit of Strauss with them”. th wrought in pewter, glass; cast iron

and porcelain captivate the eye and have become sought after collector’s items. The dining room is exquisite. Effortlessly chic and understated sophistication sets the stage for a memorable meal uplifted by the delicious cuisine. It is a flexible space ideal for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, weddings or Christmas parties or even a stylish corporate event. A lavish banquet of Italian delicacies awaits to tempt and delight from antipasti, pasta, delicious main courses and a beguiling g g dessert buffet. Roland and Brigitte Häusermann have most definitely succeeded in positioning Strauss at the forefront of contemporary lifestyle cuisine. The restaurant like them exudes a celebration for life, the joy of great food and attention to detail, all distilled into a relaxed dining experience that is sure to delight a visitor. Not content tto rest on his laurels, Roland intimates:”Our secret is to constantly innovate; our guests are the most important component of the excellence we strive for and so ou our love for people, good food, wine and life is realised in this is space”.

15 The Fischerzunft Hospitality

by Rob Greeff

“D

ie Fischerzunft” in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, is celebrated for its visionary cuisine, which not only transcends Grand French Cuisine and shatters the notions of westernised Chinese food, but lovingly crafts a unique blend of the highlights of ancient eastern and modern western cooking. The synthesis of two cultures sees the inspiration taken from Asian cuisine with regards to aesthetic, tastes and textures, meeting the high standards set by nouvelle cuisine for the freshest products, of the very best quality and lightness and transparency in cooking them.

“Die Fischerzunft” takes its rightful place among the best restaurants in Switzerland. In accordance with the very influential Gourmet food guide “Gault Millau”, where recognition is highly prized, it has been awarded 19 points out of 20 for ground breaking and outstanding cuisine. The maximum of 20 points has never been awarded. The restaurant is also recognized by “Relais & Château”, with Mr. Jaeger being one of their 160 Grand Chefs on five continents. The accolades flow with “Les Grandes Tables Du Monde” – Traditions et Qualité (the Traditions & Qualité association was created in 1954 by a group of Parisian restaurateurs with the aim of promoting gastronomy and a specific Art de Vivre). It is composed of 144 restaurants in 23 countries and three continents. The name “Fischerzunft” echoes from the days when the fishermen’s guild met in this historic building. Today the restaurant is awash in sophistication. It is all at once homely and yet so very stylish and refined. The elegant décor and exquisite floral arrangements are the foundations of the Fischerzunft’s fabled devotion to every detail as far as the eye can see, while the finest food and drink await to delight your taste buds and transport you to the very heights of gourmet transcendence. Here you will discover “La Cuisine du Bonheur”, which means creating a special treat for the eyes and

The Fischerzunft

16

palate. It also means passionate commitment to the smallest, most trivial detail. André Jaeger’s Fischerzunft takes pleasure in the art of creative cuisine and eloquently speaks the language of grandiose hospitality. It is a vocabulary that is composed of gastronomic delights that go far beyond the rim of your plate. Mr. Jaeger’s menu reads as if it was plucked out of dreams of angels and what arrives in front of you is a salubrious realization of Art, incandescent with flavour and exuberance. It is indeed a moment of sheer poetry coloured in by the senses. Sumptuous feasts of culinary specialties finely tuned to the seasons are journeys of enlightenment through fish buffets in spring and autumn, gourmand revelations of wine and dine all year, and leaps into wonderment with

wine tastings. Initiation into the “language” of Jaeger which expresses pleasure without bounds is born out of his discovery of the “East” as a young man. – To discover Chinese Cuisine in Hong Kong was indeed something special. It was a fundamental paradigm shift for a farm boy like me, and an extraordinary experience. My first Japanese meal was an experience that I will never forget. It carved my senses of presenting food in a very simple and clear but very distinct way. This was a very visceral moment that was truly fantastic and affected me very deeply to this day. The entirety of this process can be seen as a tripod. There are the basics of the very best in

17 The Fischerzunft Hospitality

fresh produce from Switzerland, the tastes and textures from Chinese food and my fascination with the aesthetics and presentation of Japanese food. With these 3 elements you have the explanation of what my way of thinking, my liking and my motivation towards food is all about, and this continues to today.

of cuisine. Many great chefs have trained so many young people and those young chefs hop from place to place soaking up as many impressions as possible, but only a few have a clear concept of what really good food is. They endeavour to impress their colleagues and their chefs and you may end up with food that looks astonishing, but does not taste very good. This is something which reassures me. If you know what is really good and you have the courage to stick to it and do it in the very best way, you can never fail.

Delving further, I asked Mr. Jaeger if a particular set of values defines who a chef becomes and the cuisine he represents.

We enquired further: Does the contemporary focus of health and wellbeing come into play with your cuisine? André Jaeger’s eyes lit up.

– Absolutely, was the straightforward reply. You see a particular approach to food is built on the foundation of their values which has become even more important with the evolution

– Indeed it does, particularly with the influence from Asia. There, food is not just for pleasure or sustaining existence, you also eat to enhance your health. And this was something which very much impressed me. It was interesting to observe how the Chinese use and eat their

produce when the weather is hot or cold, what they consume to cleanse their systems. For example, drinking ginger tea with rock sugar after eating crab rolls which are high in cholesterol. These things got completely lost or missed in Europe. In Asia it is absolutely present. This notion has helped me to construct a cuisine which is really light, enhancing and over all contributes to well being. When you eat at certain places, after two or three courses you are completely full and exhausted. It may very well taste fantastic, but if it tires your digestive system and makes you lethargic, to me this no longer constitutes pleasure. I personally like to nibble on a lot of things and also feel good and enhanced after. This is one part of my philosophy of what good cuisine should be. Grandiose style is often found in small rooms and vice versa. In the same way, your precious time can be turned into luxurious and relaxing moments in the “VinOpium” lounge and vinotek, a meeting place for gourmets and connoisseurs offering a pleasant and equally rewarding alternative to the restaurant. The gourmet and connoisseur lounge with wine bar and bistro is open daily with specially created dishes at affordable prices and noble wines also served by the glass. Style and grace are not out of place here with ambiance par excellence day and night, both before and after dinner, for coffee or tea, a snack or cocktail. Beautiful weather during the day or evening can be enjoyed on the terrace as the fabled river Rhine flows calmly and coolly past your table and tantalizing culinary delights make your mouth water with anticipation. And after all the sensory indulgence, round off your evening at the Fischerzunft by staying the night. Simply let go of any concerns of driving home and enjoy a pleasant evening. Take some time for yourself and be treated to the comfort of 10 beautifully appointed rooms, bespoke with refinement and sophistication, some with a view over the sparkling river Rhine. The Fischerzunft’s dedication to elegance and devotion to detail will make any celebration unforgettable. Your needs for promotions, cooking courses, wine seminars, golfing arrangements and dream weekends are gladly catered to. Here the concept of grand gastronomy down to the smallest detail, such as a limousine service, ensures that

you can relax and enjoy seasonally inspired creativity that simply creates an experience of pleasure in every detail.

There are places in this world that seem to relate wonderful memories of a rich past still today: Bel Ombre is such place. Already in the early 18th century, the famous writer Bernardin de SaintPierre recorded the birth of magnificent sugar estates across the wild South overlooking the emerald waters of the Bel Ombre lagoon. The reputation of the Domaine de Bel Ombre is attributed to an exceptional man, Charles Telfair, who from 1816 to 1833 substantially enhanced the region with his social, botanical and engineering innovations. “In the small Eden

of Bel Ombre” as he used to call it, Charles Telfair nurtured new species of cane and botanical plants. As a humanist and a progressive he introduced many new social and mechanised concepts that reformed Mauritius. As one of his contemporaries once wrote “the Telfair residence is a gathering place where the hospitality

is generous, unrestrained and frank. Where receptions are joyful and all amenities are offered to you. This history is still true for golfers who visit Golf du Château. Peter Matkovich, the golf course designer describes it as a place where they will find the right balance and variation in length of holes, width of fairways and green sizes, all designed with passion, love and attention to detail.” Peter Matkovich has to drawn upon 25 years of experience as a golfing professional, and 15 years of designing and building golf courses. This source of knowledge and experience combined with his intense love and

understanding of the game, enabled him in his almost instinctive quest to create balance in a golf course. These qualities and approach has been distilled into a spectacular golf course set in the unique and beautiful south part of Mauritius.

A snapshot brief of the 1st hole advises a good warm up, a good clean strike is necessary. The hole plays uphill with a prevailing wind into and off the right. There are 3 bunkers up on the right, the last of which are not visible from the tee. Regular players

describe the 8th hole as exciting. The longest of the par 3s is a good test of your ability without demanding too much. The difficulty lies in its length, judging the breeze and getting around the bunker in the front right corner.

By Robert Greeff he world today is a demanding place. Technology has effectively created a 24-hour office wherever you are, keeping you in contact with everyone at the touch of your fingertips. But, there exists a place providing a balm, when the toils and unceasing daily administration of your life is weighing down your shoulders, a place where busy minds find refuge from storms of thoughts and an infinity of “to do” lists. If you need serenity in your life, it is waiting for you on a beautiful stretch of coastline in the North West of the island of Mauritius. Welcome to the Grand Mauritian: A Luxury Collection Resort and Spa.

T

At its heart, The Grand Mauritian embraces the spirit of Mauritius, very much present in the design and architecture. Expansive spaces become vessels for natural light and the romance and simplicity of the island, evoking a laid-back tropical yet sophisticated atmosphere. Much of the Grand Mauritian has been built with a traditional hardwood timber called Balau and natural volcanic rock, a beautiful contrast of colours and textures which resonate the natural surrounds and is carried through by the “sugar cane fronds” of the thatched roof coverings. The interior design is clearly inspired by the ocean and its waves with blue hues and the beach, with naturals and taupes. German silver and chrome accents represent the moon and starlight reflection on the sea and all together creates a permeating sense of

The Luxury Collection® is a selection of hotels and resorts offering unique and authentic experiences that evoke lasting and treasured memories. Each hotel and resort is a distinct and cherished expression of its location, a portal to the destination’s indigenous charms and treasures. So went the marketing blurb. The Grand Mauritian not only lives up to the said concept, but puts its own stamp on it by articulating every pre-requisite nuance so necessary to the perfect getaway with an easy going sophisticated charm.

My experience of the hotel began on a tropical sunny afternoon. Booking into a hotel sets the tone for the rest of the stay for a guest. I was greeted by a delightful lady at reception and shown to a deck overlooking the most tranquil view of the Indian Ocean. Here I met a guest who was just about to depart. He had a smile on his face, indicative of a well rested soul with not a care in the world. His parting words were, “I wish I never had to leave”. As I sipped on my welcome cocktail, gazing out at the diamonds glittering on the turquoise sea, it was easy to understand why. This, unequivocally was paradise, a realisation that opened up my senses fully to the sun on my face, the arresting beauty of the view before me and the sound of the waves gently lapping at the shore.

cool, calm and freshness. The Bottichino marble tiles, objects du art and the mixed media paintings on the walls defines a new contemporary Mauritius speaking volumes of classic refinement and erudition. The resort consists of 193 rooms, offering a varied room mix which includes Deluxe rooms and a few suites in which large private outdoor terraces are common. All ground floor Courtyard junior suites have tropical outdoor showers. I stayed in a Deluxe terrace suite. The room was equipped with the latest amenities including: flat screen television, high-speed broadband internet plug-in, Ipod-docking station, “Video on Demand” service and Video Telephone system. My room was an expression of supreme comfort enhancing a state of relaxation with soft muted tones of taupe, ivory, duck egg blue and a fresh minty green. The airiness of the room is anchored by dark wood furniture in a nod to authentic island living. I loved the contemporary abstract art on the walls and vivid colours of the blown glass vases and bowls, stylish compliments to the textures and shades of the linens and window furnishings. The large open plan marble bathroom and dressing area opened up onto the bedroom in a smooth transition of isometric space. The bathroom itself takes the form of a modern minimal design denoting luxury and wellbeing with chrome, frosted glass and hidden light features. The bathroom was also provided with Elemis scent, perfumes and products. Of course the most important feature in any hotel is the bed. The beds in the Grand Mauritian are simply an ergonomic staircase to heaven with the assurance of waking refreshed and completely rested. It may be difficult to pry yourself away from your room to enjoy the many attractions of the hotel and spa. The room had an exceptional view from the balcony of the main pool area, adjacent water feature, the stylish designed “Brezza” restaurant and the beach with palm trees as well as the ocean. Reclining on the rattan furniture and taking in the panoramic scene was perfect for unwinding. A very spacious private terrace with deck beds set the stage for relaxed intimate and romantic meals and another superb venue for relaxation. A private breakfast nook on an additional balcony space with a view of the large water feature also provided an additional alfresco dining area. Overall, the architectural design of the suite maximises choice for the guest tailoring your holiday experience.

Dining and entertainment is imbued with the same sense of choice. The Hotel has 3 restaurants. A main restaurant called “Season”, a speciality restaurant “Brezza” and a pool-side restaurant and bar called “Reflections”. The hotel also features a wine-cellar and an extensive inventory of fine cigars. There are 3 bars including 2 pool-side bars and “Bar 68” a contemporary lounge bar, located in the main building which is the perfect rendezvous venue for a before and after dinner drink. At night the venue presents exciting live entertainment to the backdrop of the Indian Ocean under a canopy of stars.

Executive Chef Stephane Brallet

Island flair

I met with Executive Chef Stephane Brallet who has over 20 years of experience working for 5-Star luxury hotels and Michelin starred restaurants in France. His recent history includes a 6-year stay in the Caribbean and together with his formative training and experience in Canada, South America and France creates a unique epicurean dining experience. He garners his inspiration from the freshest ingredients Mauritius has to offer creating dishes to delight and beguile visitors at the 3 restaurants he oversees including the “Season by Stephane” named after him.

The Grand Mauritian

I dined at “Season by Stephane”. The restaurant is the main showcase for celebrated award-winning chef Stephane Brallet. With its “open kitchen”, the guest is treated to an interactive food experience and offered an “A la carte” menu presenting internationally famous styles of cuisine including Thai, North African, Indian and Mauritian dishes. The buffet area serves a plethora of European cuisine. The restaurant itself presents a gorgeous view of the internal tropical gardens and expansive cascading water features overlooking the beach and Indian Ocean. The setting is an immersive sensory experience intrinsic to your dining. With 250 references, the Season Wine Room features a wide range of French Grand Cru’s, South African and New world wines and caters to personal cheese and wine tastings with the chef and sommelier. My meal at Season was a superlative extravagance of delicate flavours which was surprising and indeed, an experience to relish. I thoroughly revelled in the starter: an Asian styled cucumber lobster roll with pickled ginger mayonnaise, masala and mustard and snow peas salad. This was followed by a citronella steamed Babonne fish, crab bouillabaisse, pipenoch Creole soute of bredre soufflette. I basked in the dessert, an entrancing finish of Cinnamon and chocolate parfait with mango sherbet and raspberry coulis.

The hotel also encompasses the Babonne Ballroom, a very popular venue for weddings and the Cabot Boardroom, a space catering to business functions. Both venues are fully equipped with audio visual amenities and events of any persuasion are gladly customised as per your needs. The hotel is located on a protected natural reef and provides for a variety of water sports including glass boat rides and chartered boats. I went on the glass boat ride early after breakfast and was treated to spectacular sights of natural coral formations and a dazzling array of colourful tropical fish. Also on offer are 2 “savannah” grass floodlit tennis courts, a fitness Centre, 2 outdoor pools, babysitting services, the “Explorers Club” for children, car rentals and limousines and beautiful boutiques and shops. The Mandara Spa provides exceptional relaxation and restorative spa treatments in a stunning venue. The hotel takes the ultimate state of relaxation a step further with the Spa suites, which includes a private adjoining spa treatment room as well as a dedicated 24-hour Butler service. The Grand Mauritian seeks to provide its guests with a complete indigenous holiday experience and arranges trips to the capital of Port Louis with its daily markets and shopping districts. The Botanical gardens are a short 20 minute drive away and the Marine Park is located immediately next to the hotel. The small but lively town of Grand Baie is 15 km to the north and is a very popular with its restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shopping centres and fashion outlets. I found the Grand Mauritian distilled all the aspects of an ideal vacation in a seamless and effortless fashion. The atmosphere is fantastic. An unpretentious, friendly and unobtrusive mood is constant, and efficiently maintained by a very personable staff. It is a resort that delivers the very best of Mauritian hospitality and character with 5-Star sophistication. I have no doubt that you would never want to leave.

Hunting

Known mainly for its economic activity, hunting has developed through the years into an esteemed sport for the tourists as well as the Mauritians in quest of new sensation. The authorised quarries are mainly deer, cochonglier (a mixture of wild boar and domestic pig) and hare. Famous for its tender flesh, the deer is consumed by the whole population while deer breeding contributes to the diversification of conventional meat production. From June to November; the authorised hunting period, numerous game’s hunting are organised whereby more than fifty foxhounds and a number of thirty beaters are gathered. The Rusa Deer is native to Java Islands. It has been brought on the island during the 17th century by the navigator Van Der Stel. One century later, Rusa Deer could be found on every part of the island. Big and strong, the Rusa Deer is characterised by its large and powerful shook and horns having three edges. It can reach a weight of 180 kg and its horns can go until 101 cm (Mauritian record). Le Domaine de Saint Denis offers three types of hunting schedule:

Beat Hunt - half day hunting, allowed during the month of June until September

Deerstalking – half day until nightfall (June to November)

Note that the rules and regulations are on leash and those who want take part in whatever game hunting should possess a valid hunting licence, recognised by the local authorities. Instructions and security norms are repeated before each game round. In addition, amateurs are surrounded by Professional hunters. Le Domaine de Saint Denis proposes other activities else than hunting games. Some of them are Drive, photo safari, hiking, Quad Bike ride and ATV ride.

A

s a holiday destination, the island of Mauritius is already a landmark on the world’s tourism map. The impressive beauty of its long, sandy beaches and turquoise seas stir up feelings of tranquility, exoticism and dolce vita. So it comes as no surprise that water-sports are a big trend on the island. Big game fishing, also called deep sea fishing, is a favorite among many visitors as it does not necessarily involve any previous experience. Mauritius has nothing to envy to any other country as far as big game fishing is concerned. Game fishing is practiced all year round although the most prolific season for big fishes is during the summer, between November and March. It is during these months the chances of catching fishes such as marlin and tuna are the highest. However game fishing can also be enjoyed during the mild winter months when smaller fishes such as Bonito and Dorado can be caught. Even if fishing is no hobby of yours, you will find that big game fishing is

not only tremendous fun, but has also an addictive feel to it. According to Mario Annoua of Sportfisher in GrandBay, a fishing village in the north which boasts some of the nicest beaches of the island, the majority of his customers are repeaters, i.e. those who, year in and year out, come to Mauritius to go out fishing on one of the boats the agency has to offer. 4 categories of boats are offered for hire namely 34-foot, 42-foot, 47-foot and 50-foot, and each one comes fully loaded with fishing equipment, safety equipment as well as bunks and bathrooms. The crew consists of a skipper and 2 members at hand to help the beginners. For obvious reasons, the catch cannot be guaranteed, but game fishing in the Mauritian waters is a great activity for both you and your family. Boats can be hired on a full-day, 7am to 4pm, or half-day basis, 7am to 1pm or 1.15pm to 6.30 pm, for your own purpose or can be shared with other anglers. Non-anglers will experience a great outing just off the coral reefs in the magnificent Indian Ocean. Prices depend on the boat chosen and whether you want to go out for half or full day. At Sportfisher the prices range from EUR 250 to 775 approximately. You don’t have to have ever dreamt of catching a huge marlin to be thrilled by the big game fishing experience. The sun, the superb Mauritian seas, the sleek boat and the excitement of a probable catch are all factors that will shape the serious angler like the beginner’s experience into an unforgettable adventure.

Golf Travel Bags

Golf Traval Bags

Y

our ultimate dream “golf holiday” has been booked and you are going to knock off a few points off your handicap and take in some sun, maybe even attain that elusive hole in one. With the impending excitement it is important to remember that golf bags that travel well are an absolute essential today for airline travel. When taking your golf clubs on a plane make sure that you check in with approved airline golf bags, not just for the protection of your golf clubs, but so that your clubs are in fact accepted on the airlines.

Trip advice

Travelling anywhere can create an additional logistical nightmare when you factor in lugging about a golf bag, 14 clubs and 30 golf balls. You may not necessarily need your full set of clubs and taking a half set along can make a whole range of things go so much smoother from carrying clubs around the airport, weight allowance on the plane, to having more room in the car, and of course a lighter bag makes all the difference when you’ll be playing somewhere especially warm. What to look for in making your golf bag purchase? Well, aside from your clubs, determine if you want space for your tees, golf balls, markers, gloves and shoes. Taking your golf bag on flights can end up saving you valuable space in your suit case or carryon luggage. Golf travel bags come in 3 options. Hard cases, which provide the most protection on a plane, are important to consider as Airlines accept no responsibility for the condition of your clubs when you arrive (think about those baggage handlers). For car travel, a padded soft case will be adequate and take up less space than a hard

case. They are easier to store and are much lighter and provide more pockets and organizational storage options. Hybrids are a combination of the 2, with a hard top to protect the clubs. Hybrids can also function as a cart bag when you remove the club helmet. It is best to try carrying and manoeuvring various cases in store in person, as this will help you to determine what you are most comfortable with, especially when it comes to different shoulder straps and carrying handles. There are many options to suit your needs and pocket, but ideally you want impact resistant tops and sides, wide shoulder straps and handles, full length zippers, reinforced lower panels with rails for extra protection on stairs, and extra wide wheels for rolling golf bags from tee to tarmac. On the matter of wheels, negotiating your way through a busy airport can be tricky, and you will thank yourself later. Your golf travel bag is more than an accessory. It is a factor that can set the tone for your golfing holiday before you even arrive. Choose smart.

39 Golf Travel Insurance

GOLF TRAVEL INSURANCE the infuriation when you discover that your travel insurance does not cover you for your loss. There are specialist insurance packages that not only cover you for your loss but even arrange for a replacement set of clubs ensuring that your dream golf holiday does not descend into a nightmare.

Avoid the tears when your clubs are stolen or lost and more importantly

Everyone is familiar with the fact that golf, no matter what your playing ability is, can shock you with a completely unexpected wayward tee shot. We have all seen it happen, and we have all gritted our teeth when it’s happened to us. Damaging someone’s property by hitting a house, a car or some other breakable object is no fun at all, but it is always a possibility. It is important to be fully insured against accidental damage. You should not have to pay forever for one golf holiday mishap. The same goes for injury to a third party, however unlikely the occurrence. You could be in a foreign country, and that is a headache best avoided. One of the really important aspects to take note of is that you can even get insurance for loss of green fees. This means that you will be covered for any pre-paid green fees you have arranged before travelling and may have to cancel due to medical reasons. Many golf holiday packages have pre-paid green fees upfront in the costs. We do spend the an inordinate amount of time researching the best options available out there for the perfect golf holiday, by spending a few extra minutes considering your “golf insurance”, you protect yourself from any unexpected inconveniences. Remember, your holiday should be about relaxation and bringing home an excellent golf story !

Trip advice

Travelling to another country certainly entails its own inherent risks which we are all well aware of. Frequent holiday makers know that travel insurance is a non-negotiable necessity. Playing golf on holiday is a whole other insurance ball game so to speak. It is important to make sure that your travel insurance includes golf holiday cover. In fact, standard insurance may not cover you for any loss or damage to your clubs in transit, or for any injuries sustained while playing a round. Getting that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach as you imagine your golf clubs being lost or stolen, on what is supposed to be the best holiday ever? Well there is no need for the ensuing anxiety. Many companies do offer a range of specialist golf holiday insurance packages to suit every budget.

The Richard Jackson Golf Academy at the Empordà Golf Resort

W

been a PGA qualified instructor since 1976, a qualified “A” Professional with the PGA of Denmark since 1980 and achieved Head Professional Status in 1986, together with being a Category 3 training professional. He speaks English, Danish, Swedish, German and Spanish. The Richard Jackson Golf Academy was established in 1986 and has been situated in different locations including Demark, Austria and Spain. It is presently located at the Empordà Golf Resort.

hy shouldn’t you have it all? The sun, the beach, excellent wine, fantastic food, music celebrating life, natural scenic beauty and, above all, outstanding golf! These are certainly the makings of a superb holiday. Ticking off the Swingtime Golf Travel holiday wish list is no easy task, but perennial holiday maker favourite Spain rose up to the challenge and we were not disappointed. The Empordà Golf Resort is located half an hour from Girona-Costa Brava, an hour from Barcelona and five minutes from the most beautiful beaches Costa Brava has to offer. The resort is surrounded by expansive gardens and visually arresting views over a golf course including the massif of Montgri and the medieval town of Pals. Whilst taking in a top notch round of golf, completely immersed in the privileged location, and wholeheartedly meeting the challenge of the 36 holes divided into the two separate 18-hole courses of the Links and Forest, Swingtime Golf Travel met with golf pro Richard Jackson, founder of the Richard Jackson Golf Academy. Richard Jackson is a gentleman who displays the true ethics of golf, as well as extols a passion for the sport that has become his life’s work. He has

RG: What is the philosophy behind the Richard Jackson Golf Academy? RJ: My ideas on the golf swing are not revolutionary at all. I just believe in making the game as simple and enjoyable as possible for the individual. It does not give any meaning for me in trying to baffle the student with science. The academy professional has all the knowledge of the swing technique, but only gives this knowledge to the student on a need-to-know basis. This avoids confusion and creates a better focus for the player. It’s important to remember it’s only a game! RG: What modus operandi do you employ with your training process? RJ: We use video analysis on all pupils at some time or other. This enables the pupil to match up sensations with pictures. The GASP (Golf Analysis System for Professionals) also gives us the possibility to work much more precisely, and provide the correct information the first time. The camera does not lie.

We also try to make the student independent of the instructor. By this I mean that the student will be able to play equally well with or without the trainer, and know exactly what he or she is doing. Structured training and practice is imperative to create a good performer. This allows the player’s natural ability to come to the forefront, while creating good habits at the same time. Patience is very much a virtue to be used by the instructor. We ensure the completion of a training module or section knowing that the student is happy and understands before moving on to the next step.

RG: Golf is a sport overwhelmingly governed by technique. What is your perspective? RJ: In my opinion the pre-shot principles of grip, aim and setup are the most important. The one thing all top professional players have in common is the way they set up to the golf ball. This is the one area where it is impossible to make compensation, because of the differing length of the golf clubs. Many pupils ask why. It may

RG: Who and how do you teach? RJ: Junior training, including a summer camp, Baby training with kids from as young as three years, Beginner training, Training for hotel guests, Elite training, Touring professionals, Pol Bech (Spain), Joacim Hultmann (Sweden), Lars Johansen (Denmark), On course training (course management), Instructional golfing holidays, Company days with anything up to 150 guests.

The design integrates a links-style course with two large lakes, dunes and rolling bunkers into a classic Mediterranean landscape replete with dense, manicured pine stands and spacious fairways. The courses were opened in 1990, and have since become famous all over the world. In the year 2000 they were part of the destination named as the best new golf destination in the world by IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators). Both courses have staged the qualifying school for the Men’s European Tour eight times. The Peugeot Open has twice been played on the Links course. The Ladies European Tour on the Links course and the Spanish Amateur Championships have been played on both courses. Empordà Links Course As the name suggests this is a course set in dunes and with very few trees to give relief from the wind (we are just three kilometres from the sea). The characteristics are the enormous greens, the many lakes and tight bunkering. This is the longer of the courses, and is the preferred course of the pro´s. Empordà Forest Course This is one of the most beautiful forest courses you could wish to play. It winds through well established Mediterranean pines, and demands straight hitting. But don’t worry, if you go into the trees you can always find your ball and play it. This is the preferred course of club golfers, thanks to pure beauty. A visit to the Empordà Golf Resort truly captures the very best of what a golf holiday should be. And yes, you can have it all. a

RG: Golf is just as much played in the mind as on the course. What is your take on the psychology of the sport? RJ: Very simple: make the student be aware of his thoughts. By doing this you give the possibility of pressing the correct psychological buttons before each shot. Creating good pre-shot routines also puts the player in a good place mentally (he feels reassured and confident). The 5 P’: “Poor Preparation Produces Poor Performance” is thus integral to the training process.

be thus explained: if the posture is wrong, in that case the alignment of the big muscle groups is not in balance. The shaft of the club will then have a different angle in relation to the spine depending on which club you take. This is why when people talk about having a favourite club, you can almost be certain that they have a poor posture.

The Richard Jackson Golf Academy

The Gary Player Country Club Course

is tree-lined and presents itself as a challenging and demanding course testing the mettle of the experienced and professional golfer as well as providing endless hours of enjoyment to the novice. The course is immaculately presented with Kikuyu fairways and bent grass that creates a dynamic contrast with the more barren thorn-scrub and integrates aloecovered hillsides leisurely meandering through the big layout. Players of different calibres enjoy the many sets of trees and the generally wide fairways boarded by untended bush. The most challenging water feature is on the par-5, 9th, with an island green surrounded by waterfalls and artificial rocks. Be on the lookout for crafty positioned bunkers, swales and mounds protecting the greens.

Complex and is duly characterized by the semi-desert North-West region of South Africa. Defining aspects bill it as being long (covering more than 100 hectares) and difficult and consequently takes its place as part of the best in the world. The course has many water features (hazards) including a lake. Of course the most dangerous is at the 13th hole which is filled with 38 crocodiles. This distinctive element is unusual and sets it apart from the rest of the golf resorts around the world; you won’t be going to fish your wayward ball here! The course itself is carved out of the undulating rocky terrain and encompasses wide fairways and receptive greens with characteristic desert style 18-hole. Playing the back-9 is akin to going on a golf safari and your game becomes very exciting when played downhill. A swift pace ensures a robust round.

T

he Golf Course is situated on 133 acres of parkland and has been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. This sets the stage for endless hours of superb rounds of scenic golf, providing a challenge for golfers at all levels. Stimulating play is enhanced by a striking environment of mature trees, lakes, sleeper edged bunkers and areas of wetland. It is an immersive experience taking full advantage of the beautiful countryside. The course was opened in 1998 and designed by former Ryder Cup Captain Brian Huggett MBE and measures 6470 yards from the back tees with a par of 72. American and British influences are fused into the golf course architectural design as evidenced by the huge double green at the 1st which is shared with the 6th hole.

PGA CITY GOLF describes the signature 184 yard Par 3 8th Hole as testing. The green is surrounded by water and bunkers and so only an accurate tee shot will do. The start of the back nine is equally challenging with water and bunkers standing watch over another long par 3. You are rewarded with the dazzling par 5 15th which runs along the banks of the River Thames. The short Par 4 17th is noted as a classic risk and reward hole giving long hitters a chance to truly drive the green. Caution should always be at the fore with the lake and wetlands lurking nearby. Completing your round of golf in the most memorable fashion is the 18th hole. At just over 400 yards, this par 4 is framed by mature oaks and a listed copse of trees that splits the fairway in two, providing many options for tactical, strategic and creative shot making. The Club House, designed and built to match the Tudor style of the hotel dominates the area behind the 18th green.

oossee Golf Park in Bern Switzerland stands at the forefront of the Migros Group philosophy, by very clearly illustrating through its construction and operation, the realisation of the goal of making golf, a highly elitist and expensive sport accessible to everyone. By encouraging young and old to explore the fulcrum of the body and mind, through the conduits the sport of golf extols like; concentration, co-ordination, discipline and endurance, the promotion of a healthy and balanced lifestyle can be achieved. “Golf for all!”, as the Migros motto goes is clearly evident by the exciting and bustling atmosphere at Moossee Golf Park. The parking lot is full, the club house brimming with activity and the courses ablaze with golf played and enjoyed by everyone. This is what the “future” of golf looks like. The very dynamic Moossee Golf Park is built and operated according to the “M-Code”, undoubtedly a winning formula. A quick scan around Moossee Golf

Park and you see this very clear ideological integration into all aspects of the facility. The course is available to the entire population; it is planned in a partnership relationship with the landowners; it is integrated into the landscape of the region, respecting the existing habitats for plants and animals and further enhancing it by creating new ones; a pre-emptive approach to the deterioration of ground and surface water is in place; the course is designed to the latest technical expertise and maintained according to sustainable principles, and offers golfers the best in playing techniques and interesting and varied activities, as well as providing recreational facilities to non-golfers.

Architecturally, Kurt Ross has certainly challenged golfers by the construction of the course on hilly terrain. Course management is non-negotiable, with play demanding the very best of technique taking in the varied course. You will be playing up and down hills, avoiding bunkers next to landing zones with runaway slopes that are beguiling. Water hazards, in

the form of ponds, add a magic to the environment but can be lethal. Fairways are long and narrow with trees always lurking nearby. Good shots are rewarded and bad shots punished, necessitating a sound strategy and a cool and calm approach. You will want to balance a defensiveaggressive play as your main tactic, working towards those birdies which are well worth the satisfaction of play on this course.

he most northern city in the world bursts at the seams with cultural, architectural and artistic treasures. St. Petersburg swirls with palaces, museums, art galleries, broad avenues and winding canals to the rhythm of a beating heart redolent with gravitas and history. Many who have influenced Russia and for that matter the world by redefining Politics, Art and Literature have walked its streets. The names of the greats like Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Lenin, Chekhov, Gogol, Tchaikovsky, Lermontov, Aivazovsky, Turgenev, and Rasputin together with world famous landmarks such as the Hermitage, St. Isaacs Cathedral and the Mariinsky Theatre showcase both the pomp and extravagance of St. Petersburg’s political and Imperial past, as well as the mysterious, romantic and very often tragic genius which had its sway over so many of the city’s artists and writers. The best way to discover the magic of the city is to walk in the places where these characters walked and allow the spirit of history to unfurl around you. St. Petersburg can be enjoyed all year round, but a visit during the “White Nights” is simply an unforgettable experience. “Beliye Nochi , or the White Night phenomenon, when darkness hardly touches St. Petersburg due to its northerly geographical location, is not exclusively unique to the city, but none other than St. Petersburg can lay claim to how it has been immortalized, receiving such poetic and literary acclaim. The White Nights without fail beckons thousands of tourists in their droves, with many residents staying out all night, especially during the last days of June.

With sunsets that fall too late and sunrises that come too early, everything looks new and a little bit otherworldly in the strange milky light bathing the cities many monuments, palaces, statues and sculptures with no shadows. It is the perfect time to take photographs and capture the genius and craftsmanship worked into them. It is also the time when most of the open air music concerts, theatre and festivals are staged. The White Nights creates a cultural smorgasbord of artistic performance by bringing musicians, orchestras and ballet companies from all over the world. There are a plethora of events and art happenings around the city to delight in from the St. Petersburg Jazz Festival of White Night’s Swing, The Theatre International Art Festival of White Nights Stars, and The White Nights Tango to regattas, marathons, Orienteering Festival and White Nights Motor Rally. The annual White Nights Festival, a truly remarkable event, is organised by the St. Petersburg City Administration and begins in May with the “Stars of the White Nights” performances in the city’s Mariinsky Theatre, and concludes in July with the superlative “Scarlet Sails Celebration”. A variety of concert programs feature both contemporary and classical composers including symphonic

Petersburg and vocal-symphonic pieces and are presented inside venues as well as open-air in awe inspiring natural settings. A very popular series of carnivals are also staged around the city. The largest and most well known takes place in the Peterhof suburb of St. Petersburg and features actors garbed in period costumes from the times of Peter the Great and Catherine the Great, performing authentic reproductions of historic events. There are so many that occur at all times, but artistic ones to take note of happen at Catherine Palace and in Pavlovsk suburb.

Your journey to St. Petersburg cannot be completed without at least one visit to one of the world renowned Imperial palaces in the city’s suburbs. They present a gala of sumptuous palaces, expansive landscaped gardens and treasure chests of art and history. Should you remain culturally unsatiated, St. Petersburg boasts over 200 museums with many in historic buildings. The Hermitage, the largest, features interiors of the former imperial residence and a vast collection of art, and the Russian museum houses Russian fine art specifically. St. Petersburg is extraordinary in that to visit the city is a continuous discovery of something unique. To get the most out your trip it is advisable to seek out an English speaking professional guide. This ensures that your visits are informative and fun and never short of fascinating anecdotes and stories. Seeing the city by walk tours, bike tours or boat tours during White Nights is incredibly memorable with a mixture of the three really getting you under the skin of the city. It pays to be prepared with water-proof clothing winter or summer and don’t be surprised by the year-round high humidity. All in all, St. Petersburg will linger in your mind and heart for many years to come.

The original notion of Peter the Great, the city’s founder was to recreate and capture the ambiance of Venice an Amsterdam, hence St. Petersburg has been built on numerous islands connected by hundreds of bridges. A boat trip is the best way to gain and enhance a different perspective of the city from water-level. It is a fun and all together informative fashion to discover the city’s bridges, rivers, canals and the splendour of its palaces, gardens and cathedrals along the embankments. Many of the bridges are masterpieces of engineering and architecture, and you should definitely see the “Palace Bridge” which connects Palace Square with the Strelka on Vasilevsky Island and which spans the historic centre of St.

Petersburg. When raised at night it provides one of the most arresting views in the city. “Ainchkov Bridge” is particularly famous for the 4 equestrian statues “The Horse tamers” at each corner. “Lomonosov Bridge” is one of the few bridges from the 1780’s to have survived unaltered. The “Bank Bridge” has 4 strikingly beautiful golden griffons and the “Trinity Bridge” is a magnificent Art Nouveau structure with panoramic views from the centre. The raising of the bridges happens at night and the White Nights provide a wonderful opportunity see their glory in full detail.

wingtime Mauritius takes you every month on a journey around the globe with our partner Worldgolf.com to help you discover Golf courses you may never have heard about. This month we’re taking you to Hawaï… Puakea Golf Course is located in the heart of Lihue, Kauai’s biggest town of about 10,000 people and just minutes from the airport. The story how Puakea came to be is an interesting one. During construction of the golf course in 1992, Hurricane Iniki came through and wreaked havoc on the island. Only 10 holes were completed, and because of economic problems on the island, the remaining holes were never finished.

That is until 2003, when new ownership came in and brought local architect Robin Nelson to finish the job. The result is two generations of holes, the first of which is featured on the most scenic property at the foot of the mountains. The latter half, consisting mostly of the front nine, plays closer to town. Don’t let the double wide and first couple holes set just off the street fool you, Puakea gets better and better as the round progresses. Puakea Golf Course is located just a few minutes from the Kauai Lagoons Resort & Beach Club and serves as a worthy and convenient second option.

auritius gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1968. It is a socially and politically stable island in the Indian Ocean with a population of approximately 1.3 million (2008). Mauritius has a skilled workforce with one of the highest literacy rates in Africa, many of whom are bi-lingual. Industry in Mauritius was traditionally based around sugar and textiles, however, the services industry now provides around 70% of the GDP and the tourism sector is growing rapidly.

The Mauritian Board of Investment has backed the Integrated Resort

There exists a second scheme, the Real Estate Scheme (RES), which allows foreigners to purchase property. The Mauritian government has simplified the operational framework for doing business in Mauritius and implemented a legal framework that promotes best practices in terms of transparency, good governance and ethics. Mauritian company law reflects the islands history being a combination of UK Company Law and the French Code Napoleon.

Growth and Development in Mauritius With the introduction of the IRS and RES schemes and the favourable tax structure on the island, foreign investment has soared. Along the luxury residential developments, there is a growing demand for leisure and recreational facilities such as golf courses, marinas, wellness centres and shopping malls. Incoming business facilitates the development of office buildings, business parks, industrial parks and up market business hotels. The government is targeting to bring 2 million tourists per annum to the island by 2015, opening up the development potential for hotels and increasing the requirement for hospitality, leisure and recreational facilities.

Scheme (IRS), which attracts international buyers for high-end residential property (minimum price US$500.000). This scheme provides the purchaser with the opportunity of obtaining Mauritian residency.

Investment Approach

Mauritius Capital Fund

he Fund will evaluate data appropriate to the opportunity for which the investment is being considered. For example, this due diligence will include reviews such as:

T

Commissioning an independent valuation of the site along with an analysis of the planning permissions, environmental and geological surveys. Making a market assessment of the project by discussing its salability with local real estate agents and property professionals. Undertaking a detailed evaluation of the financial forecasts and checking on the reasonableness of any assumptions. Any investment proposal will then be prepared and submitted to the investment board for approval. Assuming the investment is approved, the Fund’s lawyers will prepare the investment documents. These will include provision for representation of the Fund on any company boards and management committees to ensure the Fund’s investment can be adequately

monitored and, if appropriate, being a co-signatory on bank accounts. The General Partner will regularly review the investments to see if they could be realized and will seek to realize them at the earliest opportunity, having due regard for the likelihood of any further increase in the value of the investment should it be retrained for a longer period. Any proposal to dispose of an investment will be submitted for approval to the Investment Board. Further to the above, and to provide further protection for the investors, Acorn Fund Management will levy a Euro 20.000 annual governance charge on the General Partner. This is to enable Acorn to pay for any independent assessment of the progress of a project, as it sees fit, in order to ensure that the Fund’s investment is secure or to assess any proposed course of action.
