Welcome on Liebe Fluggäste Wir freuen uns sehr, dass SWISS ab Frühjahr 2020 mit Osaka (Japan) und Washington, D.C. (USA) zwei neue Langstreckendestinationen nonstop ab Zürich anfliegen wird. Nach Osaka fliegen wir ab 1. März 2020 ­fünfmal wöchentlich und sind damit die einzige Airline, die diese Strecke bedient. Mit über 2,5 Millionen Einwohnern ist Osaka die drittgrösste Stadt Japans.

Sie ist ein wichtiges Wirtschaftszentrum und verfügt über einen grossen Handelshafen.

Nach Washington, D.C. wird SWISS zudem ab dem 29. März 2020 täglich nonstop fliegen. Die Hauptstadt der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika ist nicht nur eine wichtige Wirtschaftsmetropole, sondern auch eine bedeutende Tourismusdestination.

board Dear guests We are delighted to be adding two new destinations – Osaka in Japan and Washington, D.C. in the USA – to our SWISS intercontinental route network from next spring onwards.

Osaka will be served non-stop from Zurich five times a week from 1 March 2020, making SWISS the only airline to operate this route.

With more than 2.5 million in­­hab­­i­tants, Osaka is Japan’s thirdbiggest city. It is also a major centre of business and industry with a ­sizeable commercial port.

Washington, D.C. will receive daily non-stop SWISS service from Zurich from 29 March 2020.

The capital of the USA is not only an important business centre, but a popular tourist destination, too.

We will also be increasing our service capacities to Tokyo from February 2020 and to Miami from summer 2020, by switching our operations on both these routes to our largest aircraft, the Boeing 777.

As The Airline of Switzerland, we connect our home country with the world’s key business and tourist destinations via Geneva Airport and our Zurich hub.

Vor kurzem wurde ein toter junger Wal mit 40 Kilogramm Plastik im Magen an die Küste der Philippinen gespült. Es sind Nach­ richten wie diese, die den in Barcelona ­sesshaften Belgier François van den Abeele zum Handeln trieben. Mit seinem Unter­ nehmen Sea2See produziert er Brillen und Sonnenbrillen aus 100 Prozent recyceltem Plastik – aus dem Meer! In 36 Häfen in ­Spanien und Frankreich stehen seine Con­ tainer mittlerweile. Dort entsorgen die ­Fischer den Plastikmüll, der sich in ihren Netzen verfängt, sowie ihre ausgemusterten Fangnetze, die sonst oft im Meer landeten.

Jeden Tag wird so 1 Tonne Müll aus dem Meer geholt. Das Plastik wird sortiert, gewaschen und zu Chips aufbereitet, aus ­denen in Itali­ en hochwertige Brillen produziert werden – diese werden in Tausenden von Optiker­ geschäften in ganz Europa verkauft und von Stars wie Javier Bardem geschätzt!

Recently, a dead young whale washed up on the coast of the Philippines with 40 kilos of plastic in its stomach. It is news like this that made Barcelona-based ­Belgian François van den Abeele take action. With his company Sea2See, he produces glasses and sunglasses made from 100 per cent ­re­cycled plastic – fished out of the sea! His waste containers are now found in 36 ­harbours in Spain and France. Here, fishermen dispose of the plastic waste that gets caught in their nets as well as the fishing nets themselves that are no longer used and often end up in the ocean. In this way, an entire tonne of ­garbage is removed from the sea every day. The plastic is sorted, washed, and processed into chips that are then used to produce high-quality eyewear and sunglasses in Italy – which are sold in thousands of optical stores across Europe – and prised by stars like Javier Bardem! sea2see.org

Ganz genau weiss allerdings niemand mehr, wo und wann der Fisch und die Chips zusammengekommen sind. Sicher aber ist, dass sie Charles Dickens 1830 in seinem «Oliver Twist» erwähnt und dieses urenglische Gericht zu Zeiten der Weltkriege am beliebtesten war. The ­result is phenomenal: a resort for just 110 guests that exudes calm and tranquillity and bears any ­international comparison. The chef is one of ­Germany’s finest, too: Christian Scharrer, who holds 18 GaultMillau points and two Michelin stars and was formerly at the “Giardino” in Ascona.

Bordeaux-Grösse Bernard Magrez ­vinifiziert zusammen mit dem japanischen Koshu-Experten Yuji Aruga ­diesen rassigen Koshu-Wein. Delightfully fresh and juicy, this is a ­medium-heavy wine. A vigorous, robust Koshu which is perfect as a refreshing aperitif, but can also be enjoyed with fish and sushi.

Das erste Mal kam er wegen des Studiums nach Israel, das zweite Mal für eine Frau: Der Zürcher Micha Gross lebt seit fast 30 Jahren in Tel Aviv und hat dort das ­inzwischen international bekannte ­Bauhaus Center gegründet.

ur Eröffnung der Ausstellung über die Geschichte und Neugestaltung des Dizengoff-Platzes sind gut 50 Gäste gekommen – Architekturfreaks und ­-studenten, Urlauber und ältere Einheimische, die ihr Leben mit und im Bauhaus verbracht haben. Es gibt Reden, Salzmandeln und israelischen Chardonnay. Mittendrin: Micha Gross, Gründer und Leiter des Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv. Er scheint jeden zweiten Besucher zu kennen, begrüsst mal auf Hebräisch, mal auf Englisch oder Schweizerdeutsch.

«Nach langem Kampf wurde der Dizengoff Circle von späteren Bausünden befreit und in seine ursprüngliche Form zurückversetzt», erklärt er. «Das war wichtig, denn der Platz ist das Zentrum der Weissen Stadt und eine Ikone der Bauhausarchitektur.» Er muss es wissen, gilt er doch weltweit als Experte des Baustils.

he opening of the exhibition on the history and renovation of Dizengoff Square welcomes around 50 guests: architecture freaks and students, holidaymakers, and locals who had spent their lives with and in the Bauhaus. There are a few speeches, salted almonds and local Chardonnay are served. In the middle of it all is Micha Gross, the founder and director of the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv. He seems to know every second visitor, greets people sometimes in Heb­ rew, sometimes in English or in Swiss German.

“After a long struggle, Dizengoff Circle was freed from later architectural sins and restored to its original form,” he explains. “This was import­ ant because the square is the centre of the White City and an icon of Bauhaus architecture.” He should know – after all, Micha is regarded world­ wide as an expert on this style of architecture.

Gross hat in Zürich Psychologie studiert und mit einem Doktorat in seinem Spezialgebiet Schlaf- und Traum­ forschung am Technion in Haifa abgeschlossen. «Diese Disziplin wurde damals nur an wenigen Orten gelehrt. ­Haifa war einer davon», erklärt er. Dort lernt er seine zukünftige Frau Shlomit kennen. Das Paar heiratet, zieht nach Zürich. Micha wird wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Uni und eröffnet ein privates Schlaflabor. Aber Shlomit lebt sich nicht ein: Es ist ihr zu kalt, zu geordnet, zu wenig spontan. «Ich wollte immer zurück nach Israel», sagt sie. Dank seiner Kontakte aus der Unizeit kann Micha auch in Tel Aviv auf seinem Gebiet arbeiten.

Wobei die Stadt vor 25 Jahren noch nicht war, was sie heute ist: attraktiv, aufstrebend, kultiviert und teuer.

«Es gab kaum Kaffee, private Bäckereien waren unbekannt, man ass im ganzen Land das sogenannte Einheitsbrot. Es standen zwei Joghurt- und drei Käsesorten zu Wahl. Ich kam immer mit Koffern voller Esswaren aus der Schweiz zurück.»

Ein Hobby wird Beruf

Architektonisch interessant war Tel Aviv allerdings schon damals: «Hier stehen noch rund 4000 Bauhaushäuser», erzählt Micha Gross. «Es ist die weltweit grösste Ansammlung von Gebäuden dieser Stilrichtung. Ich habe mich immer für Architektur interessiert und fand das faszinierend.» Als 1998 seine Tochter auf die Welt kommt und seine als Fremdenführerin tätige Ehefrau in der Nähe des Babys bleiben möchte, erfindet er die Bauhausspaziergänge. «Wir haben ganz klein angefangen und nach und nach unser Angebot erweitert.»

Haifa was one of them,” he explains. There he meets his future wife Shlomit. The couple marries and moves to Zurich. Micha becomes a research assistant at the university and opens a private sleep laboratory. But Shlomit is unable to settle into the new city, finding it too cold, too orderly, too lacking in spontaneity. “I always wanted to go back to Israel,” she says. Thanks to his contacts from his days at the university, Micha finds an opportunity to work in his field in Tel Aviv. Though 25 years ago, the city was not what it is today, namely attractive, up-and-coming, sophisticated, and expensive. “There was hardly any coffee, private bakeries were unknown, people ate the socalled standard bread throughout the country. There were two yoghurts and three cheeses to choose from. I always came back from Switzerland with suitcases full of food.”

Passion becomes profession

However, even back then Tel Aviv was architecturally ­interesting: “There are still around 4,000 Bauhaus h ­ ouses here,” says Gross. “It is the world’s largest collection of buildings in this style. I have always been interested in architecture and found this fascinating.” When his daughter was born in 1998 and his wife, who was working as a tour guide, wanted to stay close to the baby, he invented the Bauhaus walks. “We started out very small and gradually expanded our offering.”

In Israel scherte sich früher keiner um Architektur, man wusste wenig darüber.

«Als wir im Jahr 2000 das Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv gründeten, hielten uns alle für verrückt», erinnert sich Micha Gross.

Trotzdem hat er mit seinen Führungen Erfolg – ganze drei Monate lang, dann kommt die Intifada und die Touristen bleiben weg. Die erste grosse Krise dauert knapp drei Jahre, weitere folgen: «Es gab immer wieder Kriege, den letzten vor vier Jahren – das war wieder ein grosser Einbruch.»

Das Bauhaus lebt

Heute läuft das Unternehmen gut, das Bauhaus Center beschäftigt sieben Mitarbeitende, Micha Gross ist weltweit ein gefragter Redner. Er fährt regelmässig nach Zürich, lebt aber gerne in Israel.

«Ich fühle mich hier freier als in der Schweiz», sagt er, «in diesem noch sehr jungen Land hat man mehr Möglichkeiten, das Leben ist offener – das gefällt mir.» Zwar fehlen ihm manchmal die Zuverlässigkeit und Beständigkeit der Schweizer, aber unter dem Strich fällt die Bilanz positiv aus – Micha ist in Israel angekommen. «Sein Hebräisch ist perfekt», bestätigt Shlomit, «nur mit den Kindern spricht er noch Schweizerdeutsch.»

Nevertheless, his tours were a success – for a full three months, then came the Inti­fada and the tourists stayed away. The first ­major crisis lasted nearly three years and was followed by others: “There were wars again and again, the last one four years ago – that was another significant setback.”

The Bauhaus is alive

Today, the company is doing well, the ­Bauhaus Center employs seven people, and Micha Gross is a sought-after speaker worldwide. He regularly travels to Zurich, but enjoys living in Israel. “I feel more free here than in Switzerland,” he says. “In this very young country, you have more opportunities, life is more open – I like that.”

A lthough he sometimes misses the ­ reliabil­ity and consistency of the Swiss, all things considered, the balance is positive overall – Micha has arrived in Israel. “His Hebrew is perfect,” confirms Shlomit.

“Nowadays my husband only speaks Swiss German with the children.”

Von seinen Bildern geht eine ehrfürchtige Ruhe aus – und doch sind sie voller Leben. Foto­ graf Bruno Augsburger erinnert sich an die ­Geschichte hinter jedem Motiv, wie es dort roch, wie der Wind wehte oder das Holz im lodern­ den Feuer knisterte. Und dieser Funke springt auf den Betrachter über.

Augsburger sagt von sich selbst, er sei ein Waldmensch. Dort fühlt er sich wohl, sei es in der Schweiz, in Island oder im kanadischen Yukon, den er mehrfach bereiste. Die Kamera ist dabei sein steter ­Begleiter. «Aber ich gehe nicht raus, um Bilder zu suchen. Sie entstehen einfach. Plötzlich ver­ dichtet sich etwas. Ein Moment. Ein Gefühl.»

Und genau das fängt er dann ein. Seine Bilder sind stark und echt. Sie sprechen eine leise ­Sprache und leben von einer unaufdringlichen Eindringlichkeit.

His pictures exude a sense of reverent calm – and yet they are brimming with life.

Photog­rapher Bruno Augsburger remembers the story behind every composition: the odours, the wind, the wood crackling on the fire.

The spark he kindles communicates itself to the viewer. Augsburger ­describes himself as a person of the forest.

That’s where he feels most at home, be it in Switzerland, Iceland or the Canadian Yukon, which he has travelled several times. His ­camera goes with him on every occasion. “But I don’t set out to take pic­ tures. They just happen.

Suddenly, something condenses. An instant.

A feeling.” That elusive ­instant is exactly what he captures. His pictures are strong, genuine.

They speak softly and unobtrusively, but carry an urgent message.

Bruno Augsburger Der Schweizer Fotograf wurde 1968 in Thun ­geboren. Aufgewachsen im Berner Oberland, stu­ dierte Bruno Augsburger in Zürich und Leipzig ­Fotografie. Schon als Kind war er von Bergen, Seen und Wäldern fasziniert.

Diese Leidenschaft für die Natur führte ihn für seine Arbeiten immer wieder in die Wildnis Skandina­ viens und Kanadas.

Augsburger verglich ein­ mal das Fotografieren mit dem Angeln: «Du kannst die teuerste Angel kaufen, kannst den richtigen Köder wählen, die perfek­ te Stelle und Zeit, doch darauf, dass der Fisch an­ beisst, gibt es keine Ga­ rantie. Diese Ungewiss­ heit fasziniert mich. Das ist es, was ich mit meinen Bildern einfangen möch­ te, die Unzähmbarkeit.»

Bruno Augsburger was born in Thun, Switzerland, in 1968. He grew up in the Bernese Oberland and studied photography in Zur­ ich and Leipzig. Even as a young child, he has always been fascinated by moun­ tains, lakes and forests.

His love of nature took him deeper and deeper into the wilds of Scandinavia and Canada for his work.

Augsburger once compared photography with fishing: “You can buy the most ex­ pensive tackle and choose just the right bait, the ­perfect spot and the perfect time, but there’s still no guarantee that the fish will bite! Das Städtchen Montreux am Ufer des Genfersees hat schon viele bekannte Musiker angezogen, die dort in Ruhe ­ihrer Kunst nachgehen konnten.

Auch die britische Band Queen nahm in Montreux ­mehrere Alben auf.

Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva has attracted many ­well-known musicians, who came here to pursue their art in a peaceful setting. Among them was the British band Queen, who recorded several ­albums here.

reddie Mercury – Singer of Songs, Lover of Life. Diese Inschrift auf dem Sockel der Freddie-Mercury-Statue erinnert daran, dass der Sänger von Queen hier, am Ufer des Genfersees, die Ruhe und Inspiration gefunden hat, aus der einige der grössten Hits der britischen Rockband entstanden sind. Offenbar ist Montreux ein kreativer Ort, an dem Musikern aussergewöhnliche Songs zufliegen. So kamen schon früh Bands wie die Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin oder auch Nina Simone nach Montreux, um im Umfeld des 1967 von Claude Nobs gegründeten Jazz-Festivals Musik aufzunehmen. Als im Dezember 1971 Deep Purple ihre Zelte am Genfersee aufschlugen und im mobilen Studio der Rolling Stones ihre Stücke aufnahmen, kam es allerdings zu einem desaströsen Zwischenfall: Ein Zuschauer feuerte während des Konzerts von Frank Zappa eine Leuchtpistole ab, worauf das Casino in Brand geriet und bis auf die Grundmauern abbrannte. Deep Purple erzählen die Geschichte des Vorfalls in ihrem grössten Hit «Smoke on the Water» nach.

Das alte Casino war damit leider für immer verloren – aber im neuen Casino, das man an Stelle des alten Kurhauses baute, wurde ein topmodernes Aufnahmestudio eingerichtet, das Künstlerherzen höherschlagen liess: die legendären Mountain Studios. Hier sollten von­ AC/DC über Miles Davis und Michael Jackson bis hin zu Led Zeppelin die grössten Stars der Welt ihre Musik aufnehmen.

Auch Freddie Mercury, der 1946 als Farrokh Bulsara im Sultanat Sansibar geboren wurde, hatte eine besonders innige Beziehung zu Montreux. In der Idylle am See konnte er dem Rummel um seine Person entfliehen und zur Ruhe kommen. Er soll oft gesagt haben: «If you want peace of mind, come to Montreux.» Queen selber kamen 1978 zum ersten Mal an die Riviera, um weit weg vom Medienrummel ungestört an ihrem siebten Album «Jazz» zu arbeiten. Offenbar gefiel es ihnen. Im Folgejahr kauften sie die Mountain Studios und produzierten später noch fünf weitere Alben hier. Die Magie der äusserst erfolgreichen Studios gründete dabei auch auf der Nähe zum bekanntesten Jazzfestival der Welt und Claude Nobs, bei dem namhafte Künstler

This inscription on the pedestal of the Freddie Mercury statue recalls how it was here, on the shores of Lake Geneva, that the lead singer of Queen found the peace and inspiration that would give rise to some of the British rock band’s greatest hits.

Since Montreux is evidently a creative place where, to musicians, exceptional songs come ­effortlessly. Early on, bands such as the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, or singer Nina Simone came to Montreux to record music in connection with the jazz festival founded by Claude Nobs in 1967. However, in December 1971, when Deep Purple had pitched their tents on Lake Geneva and were recording their songs in the Rolling Stones’ mobile studio, a disastrous incident ­occurred: A spectator fired a flare gun during Frank Zap­ pa’s concert there, where­ upon the casino caught fire and burned to the ground.

Deep Purple retell the story of the accident in their biggest hit, “Smoke on the Water”.

The old casino was unfor­ tunately lost forever – but in the new casino, which was built on the site of the old one, a state-of-the-art recording studio was set up that proved to be the heart’s delight of many an artist: the now le­gendary Mountain Studios. From AC/DC to Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, and Led Zeppelin, some of the world’s biggest stars would all record their music here.

Freddie Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara in the Sultanate of Zanzibar in 1946, also enjoyed a par­ ticularly close relationship with Montreux. In the idyll by the lake, he was able to get away from the hype surrounding his person and find some peace and quiet. He is reported to have often said, “If you want peace of mind, come to Montreux.”

Queen themselves came to the Riviera for the first time in 1978 to work undisturbed on their seventh album, “Jazz”, far away from the media frenzy surrounding them. They evidently liked it very much, since the following year they went on to purchase the Mountain Studios and later pro­ duced five more albums here. The magic of the highly successful studios also owed much to their proximity to the world’s most famous jazz festival and Claude Nobs, who was in contact with many of the leading artists of the day. Wenn die Band am Genfersee weilte, wohnte Freddie im Duck House, einer Villa direkt am See, inklusive Bootshaus und opulenten Gartens etwas ausserhalb von Montreux. Die ­Aussicht vom Haus auf See und Berge inspirierte den Musiker zum Beispiel zum Song «A Winter’s Tale», in dem er singt: «It’s all so beautiful.

Like a landscape painting in the sky.» Aber nicht nur die Landschaft inspirierte ihn; der Song «Bicycle Race» beispielsweise soll entstanden sein, als eine Etappe der Tour de France im ­Sommer 1978 an Montreux vorbeiführte. Erst zwei Wochen vor seinem Tod verliess Freddie Mercury Montreux und kehrte nach London zurück, wo er am 24. November 1991 verstarb.

When the band was staying on Lake Geneva, ­Freddie lived in the so-called Duck House, a villa on the lake that included a boathouse and an extra­vagant garden just outside Montreux. The view from the house onto the lake and the mountains inspired the musician time and again, for example for the song “A Winter’s Tale”, in which Freddie sings: “It's all so beautiful. Like a landscape painting in the sky.” But it wasn’t only the landscape that inspired him; the song “Bicycle Race”, for ­example, is said to have been written when a leg of the Tour de France passed by Montreux in summer 1978. Just two weeks before his death, Freddie Mercury left Montreux and returned to London, where he died on 24 November 1991.

Outfits und Songtexte

1993 verkauften die restlichen Band­ mitglieder die berühmten Tonstudios an den Produzenten David Richards, der sie bis 2002 weiterführte. Am 2. De­ zember 2013 wurde in den Räumlich­ keiten des ehemaligen Aufnahme­ studios die Ausstellung «Queen – The Studio Experience» eröffnet. Ausge­ stellt sind neben Bühnenoutfits und Schallplatten auch zahlreiche handge­ schriebene Notizzettel mit Songtexten und Akkordabfolgen. Herzstück der Ausstellung ist das originale Tonstudio.

Ein goldener Kreis am Boden markiert die Stelle, an der Freddie Mercury bis kurz vor seinem Tod die letzten Ge­ sangsaufnahmen gemacht hat. Trotz seines schlechten Zustands habe er da­ mals alles gegeben, um seinen Band­ kollegen so viel Material wie möglich zu hinterlassen, obwohl er sich manchmal kaum noch auf den Beinen hätte halten können. Zu hören sind die Aufnahmen auf dem Album «Made in Heaven», er­ schienen 1995, vier Jahre nach Freddies Tod. Es war das 15. und letzte Album der Band. Auf dem Cover ist der malerische Blick auf den Garten des Duck House zu sehen, im Hintergrund der See und die verschneiten Berge. Auf der einen Seite des Boothauses steht die Band, auf der anderen die Statue von Freddie Mer­ cury, wie sie heute an der Seepromena­ de in Montreux zu sehen ist. Zu ihren Füssen liegen das ganze Jahr über Blu­ men und Briefe von Fans aus aller Welt, die zu diesem einzigartigen Kraftort kommen, um mit Blick auf Statue und See die unsterbliche Musik von Queen zu erleben.

In 1993, the remaining band members sold the recording studios to producer David Richards, who maintained them until the summer of 2002. In December 2013, the exhibition “Queen – The Studio Experience” was opened in the premises of the studio, showcasing one of Queen’s most important creative periods. Apart from stage outfits and records, handwritten song lyrics and chord progressions are also on display. The heart of the exhibition are the original recording studios. A golden circle on the floor marks the spot where Freddie Mercury made his last vocal recordings until shortly before his death. Despite his poor health, he gave everything at the time in order to leave his bandmates as much material as possible, even though he was sometimes barely able to stand on his feet. These ­recordings can be heard on the album “Made in Heaven”, which was released in 1995, four years after Freddie’s death. It was the band’s 15th and final album. The cover features a picturesque view of the garden of the Duck House, with the lake and snow-covered mountains in the background. On one side of the boathouse stands the band, on the other the dynamic statue of Freddie Mercury, as it can be seen today on the lakeside promenade in Montreux. All year round, flowers and letters are placed at its feet by fans from throughout the world who come to this very special place to experience, with a view of the statue and the lake, the immortal music of Queen.

Sechseläuten Square, Zurich. A crowd of people clusters between the Opera House and the Corso cinema. The air crackles with suspense, and even the blue-and-white Zurich trams have to halt for a moment since there is no way through. The green carpet that marks the way from Sechseläuten Square to the cinema entrance is scarcely visible. Then suddenly: a flurry of camera flashes, screaming fans, and shouts from journalists hoping for an interview – with Judi Dench, Helen Hunt, Viggo Mortensen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Harrison Ford. These and many other stars have already been guests at the Zurich Film Festival. The event for film fans takes place every year in the heart of Zurich and offers not only big names, but also many cinematic discoveries: In 2018, the future Oscar winner “Green Book” celebrated its European premiere in Zurich – months before the official theatrical release.

The ZFF provides a platform for the most promising filmmakers from around the world. Wir sind eindeutig kurz ­davor: Hier muss es zum ­Läckerli Huus gehen.

Ein Haus voller Tradition, Liebe zum Detail und vor ­allem voller Leckereien.

W

em haben die Basler ihr Läckerli Huus zu verdanken?

Streng genommen Amerika.

Denn dahin wollte der Confiseur André Klein auswandern, als er sich 1903 von Meiringen auf den Weg machte. Er kam nur knapp 150 Kilometer weit, bis nach Basel. Dort stieg er in eine Confiserie ein, übernahm diese nach einem Jahr und blieb in der Rheinstadt. 1904 gründete er das bis heute erfolgreiche Läckerli Huus. Seit Beginn werden hier die berühmten «Original Basler ­Läckerli» produziert, ein Produkt mit weit ­zurückreichender Tradition, vermutlich bis ins 11. Jahrhundert. Zu jener Zeit blühte in Basel der Handel. Aufgrund der Lage am Rhein und der guten Anbindung an die Schifffahrt war Basel ein Umschlagplatz für orientalische Produkte wie Gewürze, Orangen oder Mandeln. Erst würzten die Geistlichen in den Klöstern ihre ­Gerichte mit diesen Zutaten, dann die Adligen.

Um 1400 entstand schliesslich das Lebkuchengewerbe in der Schweiz. Eine Leckerei, die bis heute die ganze Welt begeistert.

Genusswelt

Das Läckerli Huus hat mit seinen 150 Mitarbeitenden das Gebäck zur Perfektion gebracht.

Mittlerweile sind auch verschiedene Geschmacksrichtungen auf dem Markt: Zitrone, Apfel oder ganz neu Birne. Das Sortiment umfasst bis zu 300 verschiedene Produkte und Produktvariationen. «Die Basler Läckerli machen 50 Prozent unseres Umsatzes aus», erklärt uns Inhaberin und Geschäftsführerin Miriam Baumann, die 2007 das Läckerli Huus übernommen

T

o whom do the good people of Basel owe their beloved Läckerli Huus?

America, strictly speaking, as that’s where confectioner André Klein was heading when he set out from Meirin­ gen in 1903. He only made it 150 kilometres to Basel, however, where he stopped. There, he joined a confectionery business which he took over a year later, having made a new home for himself in this town on the Rhine. He founded the Läckerli Huus in 1904, and it has gone from strength to strength ever since. The famous “Ori­ ginal Basler Läckerli” have been produced here from the very earliest days. It is a product which goes back a long way, probably all the way to the 11th century. Basel was a flourishing centre of trade at that time. Due to its location on the Rhine and its good shipping connections, Basel estab­ lished itself as a central handling point for Orien­ tal products such as spices, oranges and almonds.

The religious populations in the monasteries were the first to cook with these products, the no­ bility followed suit later on. The gingerbread (Lebkuchen) business first started in Switzerland around 1400. It is a treat which is still enjoyed around the world, even today.

World of Indulgence

With its staff of 150, the Läckerli Huus has per­ fected the art of Läckerli baking and now also offers the biscuits in a choice of different flavours: lemon, apple and, most recently, pear. The Läckerli Huus sells up to 300 different products and product variations. “Basler Läckerli make up 50 per cent of our sales,” says owner and Man­ aging Director Miriam Baumann, who took over

hat. «Wir produzieren jährlich bis zu 1000 Tonnen. Sie sind sozusagen unser Verkaufsschlager, dicht gefolgt von den Rahmtäfeli.»

Diese und andere Produkte können in der Genusswelt vor Ort probiert werden. Eine Führung gespickt mit Köstlichkeiten: Auf schwarz-weis­ sen Wänden wird die Geschichte des Hauses dargestellt. An verschiedenen Stationen kann man Original Basler Läckerli kosten, entlang einer Spirale sind Rahmtäfeli aufgereiht und auf einer Säule stehen Rutschbahnen voll mit Gelee, an deren Ende man zugreifen kann. Alles in ­Miniatur. «Nicht, dass unseren Gästen bei so viel Süssem schlecht wird», so die Geschäftsführerin. «Obwohl: Von den Basler Läckerli hat man nie genug. Die kann ich den ganzen Tag essen», fügt sie mit einem Augenzwinkern hinzu.

Seit 2015 gehört auch Schokolade zum Sortiment. «Die Schweiz ist ein Schoggiland und das Läckerli Huus steht für Süsses. Für uns ist es daher die ideale Ergänzung zu den bisherigen Produkten», erklärt Miriam Baumann den Schritt. «Natürlich ist es nicht unser ursprüngliches Kerngeschäft. Wir haben uns daher auf ausgewählte Spezialitäten im Schokoladensegment konzentriert.» Ein gutes Beispiel sind die Kreationen mit Ruby-Schokolade, deren cremige Textur und fruchtiger Geschmack die Herzen von Schokoladenliebhabern höherschlagen lässt. Die rosa Farbe stammt aus der speziellen Ruby-Kakaobohne.

Hinter den Kulissen

Nach der Genusswelt geht es in die Produktion.

Hygiene wird hier grossgeschrieben: Schmuck muss abgelegt und Schutzkleidung angezogen werden. Noch die Hände waschen, desinfizieren und wir dürfen durch die Schleuse treten. Hin-

Customers are encouraged to try these and other products in the store, where visitors can enjoy the treat-studded World of Indulgence exhib­ition. Fascinating facts about the history of the Läckerli House are presented on black-andwhite boards. There are various stops along the way, e.g. to taste Original Basler Läckerli, cream caramels and sweet fruits, or gelées. All in mini­ ature, of course. “We don’t want our guests to eat themselves ill, after all!” says the manager. “Although I have to say I can never get enough of our Basler Läckerli. I could eat them all day long!” she adds with a wink.

Chocolate products were added to the range in 2015. “Switzerland is renowned for its chocolate, and the Läckerli Huus stands for all sweet treats.

We felt chocolate was the perfect addition to our existing products,” explains Miriam Baumann.

“But, chocolate not being part of our original core business, we’ve concentrated on selected specialities in the chocolate sector.” The ruby chocolate creations are a good example – their creamy ­texture and fruity flavour are a delight for all chocolate fans. The pinkish colour comes from the special ruby cocoa bean.

Behind the scenes

After the World of Indulgence tour we head for the production area, where hygiene is all-important.

Visitors are asked to remove all jewellery and put on special protective clothing. We wash and disinfect our hands carefully and then pass through the gated entrance. Mouth-watering odours waft towards us from behind every door: caramel, chocolate and Läckerli – a paradise for anyone Ob klassisch verpackt oder in einer originellen Dose – die Basler Läckerli überzeugen in Optik und Geschmack.

ter jeder Tür wehen uns verschiedene Gerüche entgegen: Karamell, Schokolade und Läckerli – es ist ein Paradies für die süssen Sinne. In der Kreativabteilung wird ge­ rade experimentiert. Es geht um die Figuren für das Weihnachtsgeschäft 2019. In der Endauswahl stehen ein rosafarbener Teddybär aus der eben erwähnten RubySchokolade und ein Pinguin aus dunkler Schokolade – welcher wird es wohl werden? Das erfahren wir dann, wenn im Oktober das Weihnachtsgeschäft startet und die Regale der zehn Verkaufsläden in der Schweiz mit den Weihnachtsprodukten des Läckerli Huus gefüllt werden.

Für alle süssen Sinne

Es geht weiter, vorbei an den aus Milch und Zucker kara­ mellisierten Rahmtäfeli. Diese kristallisieren bis zu vier Wochen in Klimaräumen, um ihre mürbe und weiche Konsistenz zu erhalten. «Die Rahmtäfeli produzieren wir auch in Kleinformaten für Eiscreme, zum Beispiel für Mövenpick», erklärt uns Miriam Baumann. Durch die nächste Tür gelangen wir zur Läckerli-Produktion.

«Die Herstellung der Original Basler Läckerli ist auf­ wendig», so Baumann. Wir laufen an einem grossen Teigbehälter vorbei. «Der Teig ist sehr fest. We’ll have to wait until October to find out, when the Christmas business starts and the shelves in the ten stores across Switzerland fill up with Läckerli Huus Christmas products.

We carry on, past the cream caramels made with caramelised milk and sugar. They are left to crystallise in air-conditioned rooms for up to four weeks, to acquire their soft, tender consistency. “We produce our cream caramels in mini format too, for use in ice cream – for Mövenpick, for example,” explains Miriam Baumann. Through the next door we come to the Läckerli production area at last!

“The production process for the Original Basler Läckerli is complicated and time-consuming,” says Baumann. We walk past a huge vat full of dough. “The dough is very firm.

The standard production equipment isn’t up to this sort of dough – they can do sponge dough, but not this. We had to reinforce them for the job of kneading and rolling out our Läckerli dough.” From there, the dough goes into the ovens. The huge sheets of dough are then glazed and cut.

A high-pressure water jet is used to cut out special shapes, e.g. clover leaves. The products then go for decoration, which is done by hand at the Läckerli Huus.

The final stop is the packaging unit. This is where Läcker­li & Co. are sorted into different boxes and tins for distribution to the stores or direct dispatch to Internet

Unsere Freunde sind fast enttäuscht, wenn sie keine Läckerli ­bekommen, obwohl meine Kuchen wirklich nicht schlecht sind.»

Our friends are actually disappointed if they don’t get any Läckerli, even though my cakes are really not bad at all!”

He is a big name in the international opera scene: The Swiss-born Aviel Cahn takes on new challenges in Geneva.

Now he plans to conquer new ground at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. We ­talked to him at the laboriously renovated Geneva Opera House.

Peking, Helsinki, Bern, Zürich, Antwerpen – und nun Genf. Warum haben Sie sich für das Grand Théâtre de Genève entschieden?

Will man sich künstlerisch weiterentwickeln, muss man gelegentlich Neues wagen. Es ist spannend, eine neue Region kennenzulernen – ich habe noch nie im frankophonen Raum gearbeitet. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Kultur und der Mentalität reizt mich.

Zudem ist das Grand Théâtre de Genève das grösste Opernhaus der Schweiz – ein solches Haus leiten zu dürfen, ist eine wunderbare Aufgabe und eine Ehre.

Beijing, Helsinki, Bern, Zurich, Antwerp – and now Geneva. Why did you choose the Grand Théâtre de Genève as your new place of work?

To go on developing as an artist, one has to be willing to try something new from time to time. It’s exciting to get to know a new region – I’ve never worked in a French-speaking region before. I’m fascinated by this opportunity to rub shoulders with new cultures and mentalities. And the Grand Théâtre de Genève is Switz­ erland’s largest opera house – being at the helm of an establishment like that is a privilege, an honour and a welcome responsibility.

Welche Ziele verfolgen Sie mit Ihrer Arbeit?

Ich möchte das Publikum verjüngen, diversifizieren und Menschen aus verschiedensten Bevölkerungsschichten ansprechen, damit sie den Weg in die Oper finden. Ich will, dass man vom Grand Théâtre spricht, und international Impulse setzen.

Sie pflegen die Avantgarde, viele Opernfans sind allerdings eher konservativ eingestellt.

Ist das für Sie manchmal ein Dilemma?

Es ist herausfordernd. Man muss den Leuten klarmachen, warum es langweilig ist, eine «Traviata» zum hundertsten Mal in der gleichen Art zu sehen, und weshalb es spannend ist, neue Facetten zu entwickeln. Warum muss ein Werk, das vor 100 oder 200 Jahren geschrieben wurde, heute noch gespielt werden? Diese Frage steht für mich immer im Vordergrund. Wenn ich weiss, warum ich etwas spiele, weiss ich auch, wie ich es spielen will. Neue Wege zu ­suchen bedeutet immer einen Extra­effort für alle.

I’d like to attract a younger, more diverse audience to include people from all walks of life. I want them to find their way to the opera in order to give new relevance to the v­ enue.

I want people to talk about the Grand Théâtre and I want to provide new im­petus at an international level.

You have a preference for the avant-garde whereas many opera fans tend to be more conservative.

Does that pose a problem for you at times?

It’s a challenge, yes. One has to make people understand why it’s boring to see a “Traviata” performed in the same way for the hundredth time in a row and why it’s exciting to go in new directions here.

Why does a work which was written 100 or even 200 years ago still deserve to be played today? That’s the question that’s always uppermost in my mind. When I know why it is that I’m playing something, then I also know how I want to play it. Treading new paths always takes an extra effort for everyone involved. Routine tends to take hold quickly in all large institutions.

Danach war er Castingverant­ wortlicher an der Oper Helsinki. Bevor er die Opera Vlaanderen ­(Antwerpen/Gent) als ­Intendant zu grossen Erfolgen ­führte, war er ­Leiter der Berner Oper und des Zürcher Kammer­ orchesters. Seit 2019 ist Cahn Intendant am Grand Théâtre de Genève.

Aviel Cahn first stepped onto the world stage in 1974. He studied singing, piano and law at the University of Zurich before deciding that he preferred the fine arts to jurisprudence and was appointed to manage the international relations of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra at just 26 years old. He then became Head of Casting at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki. He was Head of the Berner Oper and the Zürcher Kammerorchester prior to leading the Opera Vlaanderen (Antwerp / Ghent) to notable success as its General Director.

Cahn was named General Director of the Grand Théâtre de Genève in 2019.

pfadeten Wege. Da will ich dagegenhal­ ten. Es ist wichtig, dass man der Oper als Kunstform eine Wirkung zu verlei­ hen versucht, die über das Vergnügen hinausgeht, schöne Musik in einem netten Dekor zu geniessen.

Was ist das Spannende daran, Intendant zu sein?

Sicher der Kreativitätsfaktor. Gemein­ sam mit Künstlern, Dirigenten, Regis­ seuren und Sängern ein Werk zu kreie­ ren. Der schönste Moment sind jeweils jene Proben, in denen alles auf der Büh­ ne zusammenkommt – Visuelles, Thea­ tralisches, Musikalisches. Oper ist die Kunstform, die alle anderen Künste zusammenbringt. Theater, Design, Mu­ sik, Tanz, bildende Kunst und immer mehr auch Technologisches – die Oper vereint all dies zu einem Gesamtkunst­ werk. Daher versuche ich immer wie­ der, andere Kunstformen wie Kino, Mode oder zeitgenössische Kunst in die Oper zu integrieren und so Brücken zu bauen – zu anderen Kunstformen, aber auch zu neuen Publikumssegmenten.

Die Opera Vlaanderen wurde unter Ihrer Leitung mehrfach für wichtige Auszeichnungen nominiert und hat viele namhafte Preise gewonnen. 2019

wurde Ihr ­Engagement mit dem Inter­ national Opera Award gekrönt. Wie wichtig sind Auszeichnungen für Sie? Sie sind in mehrfacher Hinsicht wichtig.

Einerseits für die Mitarbeitenden, die so erfahren, dass ihre Arbeit geschätzt wird. Andererseits sind Awards auf lo­ kalpolitischer Ebene von Bedeutung.

Politiker und Subventionsgeber sehen so, dass das Geld gut investiert ist. Und für das Publikum sind Auszeichnungen eine ­zusätzliche Attraktion. Persönlich sind sie eine Befriedigung, ändern aber nichts an meiner Arbeitshaltung.

Was schätzen Sie an Genf besonders?

Die Internationalität, die kulturelle Vielfalt, die Schönheit der Natur rings­ um, die privilegierte Lage. Jetzt kann ich als begeisterter Bergsteiger wieder in kürzester Zeit in die Berge fahren.

Das hat mir in Belgien gefehlt.

Reisen Sie gerne?

Ja. Ich reise beruflich viel in Städte.

Ferienhalber zieht es mich an ferne Orte, wo ich abschalten kann und mei­ ne Ruhe habe. An Orte, an denen auch das Handy nicht funktioniert. Das sind gewisse afrikanische Länder, aber auch Sibirien oder kleine Inseln rund um Madagaskar.

follow well-trodden paths. I’m determined not to fall into that rut. I feel it’s important to try to give opera, as an art form, an impact that goes beyond the mere pleasure of enjoying beautiful m ­ usic in agreeable surroundings.

What’s so exciting about your role as opera director?

The creativity factor, definitely. The privilege of working together with artists, conductors, produ­ cers and singers to create a work of art. The most rewarding moment comes during rehearsals when everything comes together on stage – the visuals, the theatricals, the music. As an art form, opera unites all other arts – ­theatre, design, music, dance, visual arts and, to a growing degree, technology, and brings all these together in one overall work. Which is why I never stop trying to incorporate other art forms in opera, be it cinema, fashion or contempor­ ary art. It’s an approach that can also be useful in building bridges: to reach other art forms and different audiences.

What do you like about Geneva in particular?

Its international character, the cultural variety, the beautiful countryside, the wonderful location. I’m an enthusiastic mountaineer and now I have the mountains on my doorstep again. I missed that in Belgium.

The Opera Vlaanderen was nominated for major awards on several occasions under your directorship and won many prestigious accolades.

In 2019, your dedication was rewarded with the Inter­national Opera Award. How important are these prices?

They’re important in many ways. To motivate employees, for example. It’s a way of showing them that their work is acknowledged and appreciated.

Awards are also import­ant on the local political scene – they reassure politicians and providers of funding that their money has been put to good use.

In the eye of the public, awards are an added attraction. As for myself, it’s always satisfying to win an award, but they don’t change my approach to work.

Do you enjoy travelling?

Yes. I travel frequently on a professional basis, mainly to cities. For my own holidays, I prefer somewhere far away where I can really switch off and have some peace. My fa­v­ourite places are the ones where there’s no mobile connection. Certain African countries, or Siberia, or some of the smaller islands off Madagascar.

Hikers on the four-hour wine trail from Biel to La Neuveville enjoy a gentle stroll through pretty wine-­growing villages with uninterrupted vistas of the ­Three-Lakes Region. There is an educational trail between Twann and the Winegrowing Museum in Ligerz.

This is the point of ­departure for a 45-minute panoramic hike through the Tenuta Castello di Morcote estate up to Alp Vicania, where the Ristorante Vicania awaits with its delicious risottos! For those who would like to stay forever, the­ ­delightful Relais Castello di Morcote is the perfect address.

In the Lavaux, the vineyard terraces tumble into Lake Geneva as if on a Dionysian stairway to heaven. The Terrasses de Lavaux trail runs from Saint-­ Saphorin to Lutry, right across this UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site with its picturesque villages and sunny slopes: 11 kilometres, 3 hours – marked with signposts. Take a train or a steam­boat back to your point of departure.

You can quite literally hike your way through the wines of canton ­Valais. From Leuk to Martigny in the lower Rhone Valley, a magnificent wine trail meanders through the area in gentle ups and downs. The total ­distance of 65 kilometres takes four days on foot, but any of the individual legs, for instance the one which runs from Sierre to Sion in just under four hours, is also very enjoyable.

Gotthard Tunnel

Incredible what the railway pioneers of yesteryear achieved! With barely any technical equipment, they built the Gotthard Tunnel (15 kilo­ metres) in 1882, thereby connecting the north of the country with the south. When it opened, it was the longest tunnel in the world. The Gotthard Base Tunnel (57 kilometres) was inaugurated over a century later, and is the world’s longest railway tunnel.

Auch im Cockpit wird weit­gehend auf Papier verzichtet: Das so­genannte Electronic Flight Bag enthält alle für den Flug notwendigen Informationen digital.

Crew tablets Equipping all its cabin crew members with tablet devices was a milestone on SWISS’s journey to a digital future and a paperless workplace. The new devices simplify the crews’ daily working lives in a variety of ways, giving them more time to devote to their inflight guests. In addition to details of their rosters and all the manuals they need in their work, the tablets give their owners the information they require for their flight prepar­ ations like the meals to be served, the service processes planned and passenger data submitted, along with notifications of any irregularity.

Paper has largely been eliminated from the cockpit, too: Their electronic flight bag contains all the information the pilots require to perform the flight concerned.

Chatbots und Sprachassistenten Automatisches Check-in, mobile Bordkarten, digitale Gepäcketiketten und Internet über den Wolken: für die Gäste von SWISS schon heute eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Neu hilft Chatbot Nelly über den Facebook Messenger bei der Suche nach günstigen Flügen zum Traumziel oder bei Umbuchungen im Falle von Unregel­ mässigkeiten. Zudem macht SWISS via Google Assistant schon bald das Einchecken über ­Sprache möglich. Es reicht ein Sprachbefehl, um den ganzen Check-in-Prozess durchzuspielen, ohne selbst in die Tasten greifen zu müssen.

And travellers now have Chatbot Nelly on Facebook Messenger, too, to help them find the most inexpensive flights to their dream destination or rebook in the event of an irregularity. SWISS is also working on a new voice-based check-in option via Google Assistant. All it will take is a simple voice command to complete the entire check-in process, with no need to tap around on that keyboard.

Wartung Früher gab es Wartungsanleitungen für Flug­ zeuge nur in Papierform – Tausende Seiten für einen einzigen Flugzeugtyp. Heute sind diese Dokumente digitalisiert und die Flugzeuge mit modernster Technik ausgestattet, sodass die Informationen über die Teile in Echtzeit an das System Aviatar, einen digitalen Doppelgänger, ge­­sendet werden können. Computerprogramme erkennen dabei Zusammenhänge, die den ­Wartungsteams helfen, Probleme schneller zu identifizieren und zu lösen. Mit dem System können Wartungsbedarfe auch erkannt werden, bevor sie tatsächlich auftreten.

Maintenance Aircraft maintenance manuals used to be in paper form: thousands of pages for each aircraft type. Today these documents have been digitalised. The aircraft themselves have also been equipped with state-of-the-art technology which sends information on the current status of their systems and components in real time to the Aviatar platform on the ground, where it is assessed using computer programmes to help the airline’s maintenance teams swiftly identify any problems and take appropriate action.

Aviatar enables maintenance needs to be pre­ dicted before they occur.

For over 15 years, SWISS has ­collected coins and notes in all currencies on board its longhaul flights for the SOS Children’s ­Villages development organ­­­­ isation. The donations from ­pas­sengers are currently used to support aid in ­Lesotho, an enclave ­within South Africa.

Ein gutes B ­ eispiel ist die Erfolgs­ geschichte Atangs, einer jungen Frau aus Quthing in Lesotho, die bald ihr eigenes Schneideratelier eröffnen wird.

Unterstützung bei der Berufswahl Atang verbrachte nach dem Tod ihrer Eltern ihre ersten Lebensjahre in ­Süd­afrika bei ihrer Tante. Nach dem Schulabschluss kehrte sie zurück nach ­Lesotho, um bei ihrer Grossmutter zu sein. Ihre Schulzertifikate aus Südafrika wurden jedoch in Lesotho nicht aner­ kannt. Der Traum einer Zukunft in Unabhängigkeit mit einem guten Beruf und eigenem Geld schien unmöglich.

Doch mit SOS-Kinderdorf ergaben sich neue Perspektiven. Dank der engen Zusammenarbeit der Hilfsorganisation mit staatlichen Institutionen erwirkten die Helfer vor Ort die Anerkennung der schulischen Bildung Atangs. So konnte sie eine Berufslehre als Schneiderin beginnen. Anlässlich einer Reise von SWISS und SOS-Kinderdorf nach Leso­ tho wurden im Frühjahr 2019 auch Geschenke überreicht, die für die Kinder und Jugendlichen eine Hilfe zur Selbst­ hilfe und Selbständigkeit darstellen.

Darunter auch eine Nähmaschine, die inzwischen im Einsatz und Grundlage für Atangs eigenes Business ist. So blicken immer mehr Kinder und Jugend­ liche positiv in die Zukunft – die Spenden von SWISS machen dies möglich!

With the aid of small local businesses, the youngsters can acquire vocational certificates and find training places. Atang, a young woman from Quthing on the point of opening her own tailoring workshop, is a good example of a success story.

Help with career choices After her parents died, Atang spent the first years of her life with her aunt in South Africa. Once her schooling was finished, she returned to Lesotho to be with her grandmother. But her school certificates from South Africa were not recognised in Lesotho. Atang saw her dream of an independent future with a good job and her own money slip away.

Luckily, SOS Children’s Villages opened up new perspectives. The organisation worked in close consultation with the national institutions to have Atang’s schooling recognised and she was finally able to embark on an apprenticeship as a tailor. A visit to Lesotho by SWISS and SOS Children’s Villages in 2019 was an opportunity to hand over gifts to help the children and youngsters in their quest for independence. They included a sewing machine, which Atang will put to good use in her new workshop.

And so it is that more and more children and youngsters look towards a positive future – the donations collected on board SWISS flights help to make it possible!
