TWO GENERATION RETIREES — Daryl L. Martin, Executive Director It is happening more and more. Parent and child are experiencing retirement at the same time. Life expectancy keeps inching up. Today’s 65 year old will typically live another 20 years, some longer and some less. Not infrequently, that means that mom and/or dad will have a child arrive at their own retirement threshold sometime during the parent’s older years. Two generations both experiencing retirement at the same time is a rather new phenomena. Interestingly, some are turning the challenges
associated with this trend into opportunities that can benefit both generations. On several occasions Swiss Village has helped two generation retirees meet their retirement housing needs by providing shared living accommodations. This is not the norm, but when appropriate, shared housing accommodations can provide convenience and a mutually supportive living arrangement. Additionally, shared living accommodations can help curve the long term costs. Not only are the typical household costs shared,
but in most cases the younger generation retiree is still in good health and can assist with the needs of the aging parent. This additional assistance with necessary daily needs such as grocery shopping, doctor visits, meal preparation, etc., delays the need for assisted living. And in all likelihood, it is probable that the need for 24 hour nursing care is also delayed. Please let us know if there are ways in which we might be able to creatively help you with your retirement living options.
