GIVING
WITH A
PURPOSE — Rod Mason, President/CEO
I have already shared with you the fact that I have been so impressed by the spirit of support and compassion that I have witnessed in my first six months in Berne by those who care for our residents and by the donor family who provide much-needed

financial assistance. Let me tell you of yet another “episode” of this support beyond comprehension. It has been a known fact that our maintenance department is rather limited in the types of facilities that it is able to utilize. For several years there has been a dream to construct a facility for their use – yet we really did not wish to hold a “campaign” for such a building, and we also did not wish to use money from operations for such a purpose. Several months prior to my arrival, our Board Chair, Kent, and former
Executive Director, Daryl, approached a potential donor about the possibility of their sponsorship of the project. The donor agreed to help – but issued a challenge. The donor would sponsor a major piece of the project if we would obtain similar support elsewhere. The Board discussed this possibility over several different meetings. A bi-product of those discussions yielded yet another major donor who expressed a willingness to step up and sponsor that project, realizing the importance Cont. on page 2

of this project and the benefit it would ultimately bring to the organization. With these two major donors now on board to the tune of $220,000, the Board made the decision to fully support the development of this project by getting behind it themselves individually. 100% of our Board members made a commitment to “fund the balance”, ultimately pledging nearly $140,000 from their own pockets! Wow!! Thanks to our cheerful givers this project will become a reality yet this spring! You can watch it grow to completion as it will be located northwest of the Wellness Pavilion. The morning after the original donor delivered their gracious gift by check, I found the following note in my mailbox: This poem by Edgar A. Guest is a huge part of my philosophy of life He has not lived who gathers gold, Nor has he lived whose life is told In selfish Battles he has won, Or deed of skill he may have done, But he has lived who now and then Has helped along his fellowman.

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —
Jamie Kittle
"To love is nothing. To be loved is something. But to love and be loved, that’s everything." — T. Tolis We enjoyed celebrating the month of February together with all the festivities that Valentine’s Day brings. Several residents made lots of tasty sweet treats which were sold at our Valentine’s candy sale. We enjoyed a Valentine party with musical entertainment from Mike Whitlcok, and chocolate swirl cheesecake. We watched sentimental videos and had ice cream sundaes, and were pampered with mini chair massages with Megan Dunlap. We finished out the month with an open house in the weaving room with demonstrations from our expert weavers, some even tried their hand at weaving on their own. Keep a lookout for the March calendar, Jamie will be offering her Gadget and Gizmos classes and we will be taking several shopping trips as we hope to enjoy the spring weather. We now offer daily announcements over the phone each day after 9 a.m. to hear the announcements for the day call 589-4424.

HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell
ALPENROSE —
February was cold, gray and blustery outside (how's that for an understatement?), but we kept wonderfully warm and busy inside. Of course, the highlight of the month was Valentine's Day, and our residents had a great time with a group of enthusiastic children from Kinder Haus as we shared a Valentine's party together. The kids loved the games and contests, and the residents loved their excitement! We also had our own celebration, complete with games and yummy treats. One evening we welcomed a group of fifteen young people from the Wabash 4-H Club who came to challenge us at Dominoes. We also enjoyed a great afternoon of music with Fred Walker.
We are UNDER CONSTRUCTION! Our Dining & Activity rooms are getting remodeled. The workers from Limberlost Construction are doing great. The new flooring goes in last, but should be all done by the end of the month or first part of March. Dave Bauman has done a great job with the paint work. We have had our activities in many different places due to construction. This month is volunteer month. I would like to say a special thank you to the volunteers that help out in Alpenrose. These ladies have helped out in many different ways. Thank You – Sonnie Litwiller, Gladys Mitchel, Kathy Liechty & Debbie Double. I appreciate all your help and the joy you bring to our residents.

The craft ladies came and helped us make some beautiful heart-shaped decorations for our doors. It may be cold outside but inside, our home is warmed with a lot of love! Sharon and Ruth always come up with great ideas. On Valentine's Day, we had ice cream sundaes and that was a great treat. There is always room for ice cream! It was an opportunity to reminisce about special Valentine's Days. We enjoyed some special Valentine's day music and even helped a dear friend celebrate her 102nd birthday! We have several craft projects coming up to help welcome in the spring season! Come visit us next month in Blumengarten and you will see all the wonderful projects displayed throughout our area. Guests are always welcome! We may even invite you to sit and play a game of dominoes or checkers or work the puzzle. There is always something going on!

The heart pumps nearly 1 million barrels of blood and beats more than 2.5 billion times in an average lifetime, it’s not surprising the heart is the most physically active muscle in our bodies. Many lifestyle choices we make play into our heart health, especially diet and exercise. Essential vitamins and minerals fuel our bodies to help us function properly. Studies suggest the following nutrients are especially helpful in maintaining good heart health: phytoestrogens, phytosterols, carotenoids, polyphenols, Omega-3 fatty acids, and B-comple vitamins. A good balance of cardiovascular and strengthening exercises can also help lower blood pressure, burn calories, lower LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and boost HDL (“good” cholesterol). Strength training helps to improve balance and slow natural muscle loss as we age. *Consult your doctor before starting any new diet or exercise regimen. March 2015

SOUTH CAMPUS WELLNESS — This month we will be finishing up our Winter Wellness journey... A Walk Through the Decades. For our halfway point party, we will have fellowship, food, and reminiscing for all those participating! The residents have enjoyed taking a stroll down memory lane, and also getting a
Emily Arnold & Rachel Rosswurm little more cardiovascular exercise. If you aren't sure of our class schedule, please feel free to pick one up from our bookshelf. This year we have added times to walk together from the South Campus Wellness Center. When it gets nice out, we may take some walks outside around our path.
ART & GLORIA MUSELMAN WELLNESS PAVILION — The Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion would like to invite any senior 55+ to join us for the beginning games of 2015 NCAA March Madness Basketball Tournament. The infants have been busy taking rides all around. The infants are starting to learn how to wave and smile. It is so much fun to watch them as they accomplish so many milestones during their first year of life! The toddlers had fun making Valentines to give to the residents. They have been painting the silhouette of Lincoln & Washington for President’s Day with red and blue paint. The 2’s enjoyed celebrating Valentines’ day with a classroom party. They also learned a

lot about taking care of themselves by washing their hands, eating healthy snacks, and brushing their teeth. They enjoyed watching the snowy weather and cannot wait for it to get warmer so they can go out and play! The 3’s have been learning about taking care of themselves as well. They washed away yucky germs and even did an experiment with bread. The 4 & 5’s enjoyed a field trip to Adams Central and went to the FFA Petting Zoo. They got to learn about where their food comes from and
then the best part was seeing animals such as an alpaca, llama, flipping pigeons, naked neck chickens, fainting goats, and baby chicks and ducks. Another highlight was also sitting in the John Deere tractor and skid loader. This was certainly a very educational and fun field trip!
