THANKS VOLUNTEERS! — Daryl L. Martin, Executive Director “The greatness of a man can nearly always be measured by his willingness to be kind.” G. Young Kindness is at the center of all worthy volunteer work. It is no different here at Swiss Village. There are 100s of persons who routinely take time out of their

busy schedule to help someone else. Through their unselfishness they help to spread around kindness and brighten the day of the persons they serve. Every April, this country celebrates the contribution that volunteers make to our society. We at Swiss Village join that celebration and express our gratitude to all of those who volunteer. You do make a difference. It may seem that your task is minor and of little consequence. Please be assured that what you do is important and does add to the quality of life’s experience for those

who receive your kindness. The opportunities to do volunteer service at Swiss Village are numerous. Greeters at the front receptionist desk, mail sorters, serving on boards and committees, delivering packages, bingo callers, wheel chair pushers, and reading to the children in Kinder Haus are some of the popular ways that people volunteer at Swiss Village. If you are not a volunteer, please consider becoming involved. And, if you cannot volunteer at Swiss Village, then consider serving your church or community in Cont. on Page 7

ALPENROSE —

Donna Stout

Spring is officially here by the calendar, but there were some snowflakes falling as I write this. The snow has been nice to look at, but we are ready to get outside and enjoy bus and golf cart rides. As the weather will be changing and the birds looking for food to eat, we are starting to work on some different kind of feeders for the birds. Hopefully soon we should be able to hang them outside for the birds to enjoy. We enjoyed our luncheon with the Kinder Haus children at the beginning of the month. We enjoyed hamburgers from McDonald’s and French Fries, fruit and jell-o squares from the kitchen.

HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell We are all anxiously awaiting – so far to no avail – the warmer weather, green grass and flowers of spring! In the meantime we spent much of the month of March focusing on music and munchies. Carolyn Fletcher, Don Smithey, and Chester Longenberger all shared their wonderful and diverse musical talents with us, and our residents enjoyed a “tape delayed” performance of Saturday Night at the Village by the Jubilees. For St. Patrick’s Day we shared trivia and treats. We also learned all about (and sampled) Oreos and M&M’s, and held a cookie auction along with several yummy “Cooking Corners.” Our special luncheon capped off the month with Philly Steak Sandwiches!

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —

Jamie Kittle

We are certainly happy that during the past month our view has turned from white snow to green grass, just in time for Saint Patrick's Day! Mike Whitlock, an entertainer from Fort Wayne, was a familiar face to a few of our residents, and got everyone singing Irish songs at our Saint Patrick's Day Party. Resident Don Gerig and Mike also performed a special impromptu duet. The two previously sang together in a presentation of "The Messiah" in Fort Wayne! During Cooking with Esther Ray, we learned how to make broccoli balls. We also enjoyed going to The Galley in Decatur for some of their well-known fish! We are ready for signs of spring, which was quite evident from a full house at the spring door arrangement class and Easter craft classes! Also, with March Madness underway, brackets have been filled out by residents and staff, everyone has been anxiously awaiting the results of who is the top scorers for our own Swiss Village tournament. Best of luck to all participants!

Last week, I asked one of our resident's Mr. Richard Beitler what he thought about the approaching Springtime. He wrote a little response and this is what he said. "After an unusually harsh winter with record amounts of snow which lasted so long it seems, now we see signs of spring around us. The very thick ice is melting off lakes, ponds, and rivers and wildlife is returning. Yesterday, I saw several mallard ducks on the pond outside my window here at Swiss Village and a couple Canadian geese. Now I will watch for a blue heron as it comes looking to catch a tasty little fish. For many people, this has been an unusually harsh winter and we are ALL thankful for the signs of Spring! With springtime we think of newness and the season of Lent, Holy week, Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter! How blessed we are to experience again these times pointing us again to the new life in Christ and a look of hope to life with our Savior in endless ages to come!" So enjoy and continue to watch for the new signs of spring in our community and "little place in the world!" Our residents' have been making some little reminders of the newness of spring!

The infant room has so many mobile children. They explore every inch of the room. They have painted with Shamrocks and clapped their hands and watched it snow! Buggy rides and big room playing rank at the top! The toddlers have been enjoying “indoor” activities for so long due to the snow. They are wishing for warmer and sunnier weather so they can go outside. They celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by making leprechaun masks and learning about the color green. The toddlers have also had fun during our activities with

to attend. Please look on your activity boards for more information about this!

the residents where our little ones love to show off! The 2 year olds have also been learning about St. Patrick’s day. The children have enjoyed making rainbows, a pot of gold and eating green pudding the past couple of weeks. The 3 year olds have had fun making pinecone birdfeeders for the birds. They spread peanut butter on the pinecones and then rolled them in birdseed. The pinecones were hung out on the tree in the pl aygr ou n d. S qu eal s of excitement could be heard as the children saw squirrels hanging upside down from the branches

eating all the bird seed! The 4 & 5’s have had fun learning a b o u t community helpers and what they do for us and our community. They have also had fun talking about Dr. Seuss and reading all his different books like “Cat in the Hat” and Fox in Socks. Their favorite was “Hop on Pop!”
