DON’T WAIT — Daryl L. Martin, Executive Director Research studies show that the satisfaction of living in a senior living community remains extremely high. Last year 89.3% of 57,900 respondents living in 265 different senior living communities in 36 different states expressed that their overall satisfaction experience was good or
excellent. That rate of approval makes a strong statement about the experience of living in a community like Swiss Village. Often new residents to Swiss Village express that they wished that they had moved in earlier. Over and over I hear them say, “Why didn’t I make this move years ago?” Deciding to move to a retirement community is never an easy decision. But waiting can be costly. Loss of spouse, declining health and growing isolation related to one’s shrinking world
can leave one vulnerable. Studies show that actively engaged mature adults achieve the greatest fulfillment and quality of life when they still have the ability to make new friends, learn new skills and pursue creative hobbies and activities. Swiss Village provides those opportunities along with a supportive community with a full range of optional life activities. Don’t wait and later regret. Making your decision before you have need will serve you well!

CHARITABLE GIVING NEWS — Jennifer Lehman Walking can be wonderful for you both physically and mentally. This summer we hope that you will be able to enjoy all the many benefits walking has to offer on the North Campus walking path. At Swiss Village we are planning on placing a walking path around the North Campus duplexes connecting to the Muselman Wellness Pavilion and Clark Street in Berne. The path will be ¾ of a mile long and have benches at each pond to enjoy the beautiful scenery. We see the walking path on South Campus being used from morning until evening by residents, staff members, and numerous community members. We know the north campus path will be used often as well and will offer added benefits to all who use it. In order for the walking path to be completed this summer we must raise $100,000 for the path, benches, and landscaping to be completed. To help meet this goal the Swiss Village Board of Directors have Cont. on page 8

Your brain is not a muscle, it is an organ, but recent research has shown that exercise is very good for your brain. Exercise helps keep our brain working smoothly. Benefits of physical exercise: -increases the heart rate, which pumps more oxygen to the brain.

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —
Jamie Kittle
In May, 8 Swiss Village residents participated in the Northeast Indiana Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (I.A.H.S.A.) Pool Tournament along with 3 o t h e r r e t i r e m e n t communities. Although we didn't bring home any trophies this year, the residents had a great time competing! During May, we also helped the Kinder Haus daycare kids make flower pots for their moms for Mother's Day. In honor of all the special ladies in our lives, we also hosted a Ladies Tea. The featured program was a surprise funny fashion show...the auditorium was filled with laughter! We remembered Memorial Day with an outing to Willshire, OH to see a veterans memorial display where a few of our Swiss Village veterans had their memorabilia on display and also enjoyed lunch at Becky's restaurant. A trip to the Tin Caps Baseball Game in Fort Wayne was a perfect way to end the month!
BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES —

We have been so thankful for the sunshine we have had lately. Many residents' have enjoyed sitting outside, taking strolls outside, watching the baby birds getting fed, and just observing the wonderful colors of spring! The garden has been planted with some corn, tomatoes, and a melon. Hopefully this fall we will be enjoying some of its produce. The evenings are enjoyable with board games, bingo with prizes and dominoes. We have enjoyed making some Frosted Spice cookies, Peanut Butter Fudge, and Homemade Banana Pudding on Thursday morning cooking and we enjoyed them during our Friday night movies. HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS & ALPENROSE — Karen Rowell What a busy time we had this month as we celebrated National Nursing Home Week! We kicked things off the day before Mothers’ Day as our residents and their guests enjoyed the annual Ladies’ Tea with special guest Todd Myers who entertained us with piano music. From there the week was a whirlwind of activity! On Monday our residents delighted in looking over, and reminiscing about, Fred Bixler’s classic car collection. Tuesday, Bill and Sally Reynolds brought a trailer load of animals, and the Kinder Haus kids joined us for a great time of getting to know them. Wednesday afternoon we dug into root beer floats over casual visiting. Thursday brought our annual Friendship Luncheon in the auditorium, with staff members and residents enjoying a delicious meal together. Carolyn Fletcher joined us in the afternoon with her accordion and gave us many styles of music on both piano and accordion. Friday was “change of plans” day. We had all been anticipating the Friendship Walk, and many volunteers were poised to come and push many wheelchairs on a circuitous route down to the Fire Station and back. However, Mother Nature intervened! Instead, we enjoyed participating in a hymn sing with our old friend, Anita Rediger, and then having picnic lunches indoors. Finally, in the afternoon we wrapped up the week with a come-and-go party, bidding farewell to another special week of celebration.

Children are like kites. You spend a lifetime trying to get them off the ground. You run with them until you’re both breathless – they crash – you add a longer tail – they hit the rooftop – you pluck them out of the spout – you patch and comfort, adjust and

teach. You watch them be lifted up by the wind and assure them that someday they’ll fly! Finally they are airborne, but they need more string and you keep letting it out and with each twist of the bale of twine, there is a sadness that goes with the joy because the kite
becomes more distant and somehow you know that it won’t be long before that beautiful creature will snap the life line that bound you together and sore as it was meant to soar, free and alone!!! Author - Unknown
