THERAPY —
Tara Farlow
The knee is the largest and most complex joint in the body. The number of moving parts in the knee that make it so useful also render it vulnerable to injury. Incidence of knee pain increases with age and is a very common occurrence in older adults. Home remedies to treat knee pain include: rest, ice, heat, antiinflammatory medications, weight loss and low impact exercise. The goal of
Page 4
therapy is to reduce pain and inflammation, while increasing strength and flexibility in the affected areas. A physical therapist can teach you how to work out stiffness without further damaging your joint. An Occupational therapist will work with you to reduce strain on your joints during daily activities. Participating in a therapy program you will learn therapeutic methods to relieve
discomfort and improve performance through various physical techniques and activity modifications. During therapy you will receive exercises that help your knees without increasing the risk for injury or further damage. Talk with your physician about your treatment plan and ask if Occupational or Physical Therapy can help. For more information, please contact our therapy department.

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —

BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES —
Cole Rupp
Warm weather and sunny days are here, and we have been taking advantage of them with a variety of outings and activities! We enjoyed reminiscing during a picnic at Ouabache State Park, enjoyed foods of the season including our popular ice cream sundae bar as well as a strawberry sturm social. The men enjoyed a fishing derby and cookout in honor of Father's Day, and our golf cart rides through the community have been enjoyed by many. We also ate lunch at Mrs. Wick's Pies Restaurant and visited Silver Towne in Winchester, IN.
It is so nice to be getting outside again! The residents have really enjoyed the fishing time, the golf cart rides, and just sitting in the swing by the fountain! The garden has been planted and it is coming along nicely since we have received all this rain! The Kinder Haus kids came over and we made butterflies out of cereal and we had a great time with Sharon and making flowers. With the strawberries in season, we enjoyed dipping them in chocolate! Can life get any better than this?
HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell
ALPENROSE —
Summer has arrived, and many of our activities this month have centered around being outdoors and enjoying the w o n d e r f u l weather, including bus rides and golf cart rides. One of our bus rides took us to Schwartz’s Horse Boarding, where we got to see horses that are being trained for racing. Our residents especially enjoyed seeing the new foals. All month on Tuesday afternoons we have enjoyed relaxing times sitting and visiting in our beautiful courtyard. On the last Tuesday, a group of children from Kinder Haus joined us out there for a fun picnic! Also that week, the local 4-H Dog Club came, bringing their beautiful dogs to do a show for us.
We have enjoyed many nice golf cart rides lately. The residents have been enjoying the beautiful days outside, the breeze against their faces. We have seen many types of flowers and rose bushes. The residents then talk about their flowers and what they had in their gardens. And if you ask some, they think they should be driving. So if you see us driving around, make sure you wave to us. We would love to wave back! We had our special luncheon with the children from the daycare. It is always such a different atmosphere when they come up. The children and residents talk about all kinds of different things. Most of the residents either helped teach a Sunday school class or might have been a teacher and having the children here always bring those memories back. Sometimes we even wear the kids out.

Art & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion — Andrea Miller The Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion will be hosting a pool tournament for any senior 55+ on Friday, July 12 at 9:00 a.m. at the Wellness Pavilion. Snacks will be provided. Members and Non-Members are welcome. Please sign up by noon, Thursday, July 11 at the Wellness Pavilion Front Desk or call 260.589.4496.
SOUTH CAMPUS WELLNESS — Emily Arnold & Rachel Rosswurm Each year, measured by our fitness assessments, we have many wellness program participants with great percentages of improvement. The following is just one of the positive stories. Darryle Pharr is a North Campus Duplex resident. He participates faithfully in the 1:00 strength and balance class on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the South Campus. He had a 375% improvement in balance, a 30% increase in upper body flexibility, 50% improvement in upper body strength and a 10% improvement in lower body strength. He also lowered his diastolic blood pressure. “I know that the exercise classes and riding the stationary bike has helped. If I didn't exercise, I would be stiff and feel worse. My wife and I ride the bike together and the doctor told her that her numbers have improved as well.”

The infant room is very busy and active right now! The children are mostly all mobile and getting all around the room. It is amazing to watch the many different forms of “crawling” that goes on in the infant room. They are all beginning to jabber and talk and even shake their heads ‘NO!” The toddlers have been enjoying their walks outside and playing in the sandbox is one of their favorite activities. The 2 year olds have enjoyed learning about the sun and talking about summer. The children loved making a sunshine painting and a tissue paper sun. The 4 & 5 year olds have enjoyed talking about frogs and how they grow from a tadpole to a frog. They also had fun talking about gardens and all the different vegetables that grow in them. The school age children have been busy swimming, watering flowers and working on their “performances” for the much anticipated “talent show” coming up in August. They were so excited to have a special workshop on writing and illustrating a book by local author Holly Mishler and local illustrator, Karen Flesch. Before the day was over, one of the boys in the group had already written his very own book which he said he was going to copy and sell for $ 1.00 per copy! It sure is great to always dream big isn’t it!

CHARITABLE GIVING NEWS — Jennifer Lehman Are you 70 ½ years of age? Do you have an IRA? If you answered yes to these questions a Charitable IRA Rollover might be a good option for you. At the beginning of this year congress passed the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA) allowing Charitable IRA Rollovers for 2013. This allows you to donate anywhere from $100 to $100,000 as an individual or $200,000 as a couple, to help residents at Swiss Village get needed care. A Charitable IRA Rollover can be a great option because it allows you to transfer money from your IRA directly to Swiss Village without having to recognize the transfer as income. If you are required to take a distribution from your IRA that you don’t need at this time and want to help make a difference in many lives this is
a great option for you, as the gift will count towards your mandatory annual withdrawal. If you are someone who makes charitable deductions but you don’t itemize deductions on your taxes this is also a great option for you since the transaction is not recorded as income. A Charitable IRA Rollover gift can also be useful to you if you are subject to the limitations on your itemized deductions. Only IRA and Roth IRA accounts are available for this wonderful giving opportunity. 401(k) and 403(b) plans are not eligible. If you have any questions please contact Jennifer Lehman and she would be happy to discuss this with you further. This option can present many benefits to you, but most importantly you will be helping out those in need at Swiss Village.
