YOUR HELP IS APPRECIATED! — Daryl L. Martin, Executive Director The Indiana Family & Social Services Administration’s Division of Aging in collaboration with the Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning will again be conducting a satisfaction survey of all certified nursing facilities in the state,

including Swiss Village. As a part of this effort they will be reaching out for input from residents, resident families/friends and employees of Swiss Village. The information received from the survey will be used by the State to help determine M e d i c a i d reimbursement rate setting. Nursing facilities that score higher will receive incr eased reimbursement. This is part of the State’s effort to move towards a valued based reimbursement system.

In other words the State wants to pay more when more services and staffing are given and less when less is given. Swiss Village encourages you to participate in the survey process. Your input is critical to getting a valid sampling. Organizationally, Swiss Village works hard to provide quality care. Our staffing patterns are significantly higher than the average Indiana nursing provider and at the same time the skill level of our staffing personnel exceeds the norm. SWISS VILLAGE DONATES BIRDHOUSES TO CITY —

Michelle McIntosh

Recently Swiss Village Resident George Buhler made several birdhouses for the City of Berne. Berne is in the process of applying to be recognized as a bird town through the Indiana Audubon Society. The birdhouses made by George will be placed around town including Lehman Park. Pictured presenting the birdhouses with George Buhler to the Berne Chamber of Commerce are Swiss Village Staff members Michelle McIntosh and Jamie Kittle.

Kinder Haus —

Heidi Schoeneman

The infants have been really growing and changing each day! They love the buggy rides, enjoy painting with cotton balls, and clapping and singing. The toddlers have enjoyed playing outside on the playground making sandcastles and riding their bikes. They decorated father’s day cards. They have been entertained by the antics of the squirrels outside the fence. The 2 year olds have been learning about food we eat during the summer. They have enjoyed making ice-cold lemonade and ice cream sundaes. Making

tissue paper watermelons with the residents was also a highlight. The 3 year olds have been learning about team work. They have worked together to draw pictures, run a three legged race and to lead one another around blindfolded. They are learning important life skills and building friendships. The 4 & 5 year olds have been learning about frogs and also fishing. Since school is out, we are blessed to have our school age children with us for the summer. Several of the children have been with us

since they were infants and it is always great to have them return for the summer. They have been enjoying watering flowers, swimming at the wellness pavilion and fishing out in the pond.

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —

Jamie Kittle

During June, we enjoyed celebrating Father's Day by hosting a Men's Mini Car Show and s e r v e d rootbeer floats. During Saturday Night at the Village, we were entertained by the cheer camp from the Wellness Pavilion, as well as Still Blessed, a women's gospel trio from Ohio. We also enjoyed making, and of course eating, strawberry sturm with the expertise of Shirley Neuenschwander in carrying on this tradition! We also enjoyed being out and about enjoying the beautiful weather with golf cart rides and drives to places, such as the Dunkirk Glass Museum, Peebles, and of course to Willshire for ice cream! The Dunnemans performing their gospel music was another huge hit on a rainy day! We also enjoyed hearing from missionary Elizabeth Smith and her experiences in Vietnam.

HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell This month we've been enjoying getting into the swing of the summer season. Our courtyard is getting more beautiful by the day, and we have spent time sitting and visiting out there, as well as going on golf cart rides and bus rides. We also celebrated Fathers' Day with an afternoon of music and root beer floats. Our residents have had a great time each week playing games with a number of student volunteers. We also really appreciated having John Hebine entertain at our birthday party with his repertoire of easy listening classics. Finally, we again enjoyed one of our favorite activities of the year – the annual 4-H Dog Show!

BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES —

As we approach Independence Day we have a lot to be thankful for. We all enjoy the fireworks, food, and time with family and friends, but most of all we are grateful to the many service men and women who have fought for our freedom. Recently Swiss Village resident Bonnie Habegger attended the May 28th Honor Flight to Washington D.C. with her daughter Cynthia. When they arrived in Washington D.C., they were greeted by hundreds of flags and supporters. They toured the World War II Monument, the Lincoln and Korean War Memorial, the Arlington National Cemetery, saw the Pentagon, and toured the Women’s Memorial. “It was a wonderful privilege to go on this trip and to be honored in so many ways,” said Bonnie. We thank all of our residents' who have served our country in so many places around the globe! You are a blessing to all of us!! Happy 4th of July!

ALPENROSE —

Donna Stout

The weather has not cooperated with us for golf cart rides lately, but we made due with many other activities. We had our special luncheon with the children from the daycare. We heard the Dunnemans sing many gospel songs that the residents know. We have been studying the parable of the prodigal son and no matter how badly we act it’s never too late to turn our lives around. Mike is so good about teaching us about the foundation of Christ. After Bible Study the Daycare children and Chaplain Mike built a tower taller than him.

SOUTH CAMPUS WELLNESS —

Emily Arnold & Rachel Rosswurm

We did our annual assessments on residents and senior class participants in May. Most of our residents on South Campus are 90 years or older. They still participate two to three times per week in exercise class and/or on machines. One such resident is Evelyn Beitler. She is 94 years old and has been participating for ten years! She is in the above normal range for upper body strength (measured by the arm curl test) and endurance (measure by the two minute step test). She was also above normal for lower body strength (measured by the chair stand test). Evelyn says “After a session with Rachel and Emily, I feel better. Even if I don't want to go, I will because I know it is good for me!”

important warning signs that should alert you: 1. Pain: pain from arthritis can be constant or it may come and go. It may occur when at rest or while moving. Pain may be in one part of the body or in many different parts. 2. Swelling: some types of arthritis cause the skin over the affected joints to become red and swollen, feeling warm to the touch. 3.

Stiffness: especially when waking up in the morning, after sitting at a desk or riding in a car for a long time. 4. Difficulty moving a joint. Therapy can help address the pain, swelling, teach you how to exercise without further damaging the joint, and teach compensatory strategies to assist with activities of daily living.

Tara Farlow

Over 50 million people are diagnosed with arthritis by a doctor. So its not surprising that arthritis is the number one cause of disability and the second most frequently reported chronic condition in the United States. How do you know if you have arthritis? Only a health care professional can tell you for sure if it is arthritis, but here are four

FROM THE DESK OF MARGIE —

HAPPY BIRTHDAY STAFF

Margie Dougherty

Have you ever wondered how Swiss Village’s staffing statistics compare to other long-term care facilities? The University of Indianapolis asked long-term care facilities in Indiana to provide turnover data. The university did a comprehensive comparison of facilities based on size of the facility, region of the state, and forprofit versus not-for-profit organizations. For the last 4 years: Swiss Village’s turnover of healthcare staff has been: RNs and LPNs – between 5.5% - 12.8% CNAs - between 22.6% - 29.5%. State-wide average turnover is: RNs – 74.1% LPNs – 67.0% CNAs – 98.1% For-Profit facilities: RNs – 78.2% LPNs – 67.1% CNAs – 111.0% Not-for-profit facilities: RNs - 71.0% LPNs – 64.1% CNAs – 84.6% Swiss Village compares well to our peers!

CHARITABLE GIVING NEWS — Jennifer Lehman

As I was thinking about what to write this month I found myself humming songs from UPCOMING EVENTS church camp. I particularly noticed when I got to the song Jul. Event “God Loves a Cheerful Giver” DeBrand’s Fine Chocolate based on 2 Corinthians 9:7. So 11 Tour-9 am I looked a little deeper into Saturday Night at the Biblically cheerful giving. I was 12 Village - Family Ties 7 pm amazed, but shouldn’t have been surprised, that according Swiss Days Activities 25-26 to the National Christian (See page 2) Foundation the word “give” is mentioned 921 times in the Bible. A small four letter word that contains so much hope Be sure to check the Swiss Village and love, which those words Website at www.swissvillage.org added together, are only for the complete listing of this mentioned 706 times in the months Residential and Healthcare Activities. Bible. At Swiss Village we have been blessed by many cheerful givers who have helped us to live out our Christian faith in many ways, but especially through the Samaritan’s Endowment Fund. This fund ensures that individuals will

receive the high quality care they need regardless of their ability to pay. We see individuals who saved their whole lives but have outlived their funds or those who have experienced circumstance beyond their control are now needing assistance to cover medical costs. Thanks to everyone who has supported the Samaritan’s Endowment we have been able to give almost $5 million in charitable care over the past 41 years. Almost $3 million of that has been paid out over the past 10 years. On average it costs $19 per day or $7,000 per year to provide one resident with needed care through the Samaritan’s Endowment. Your support of this Endowment helps us to live out our Christian faith on a daily basis. Thank you to all of our cheerful givers!
